BRYAN LECTURES TO CROWDED HOUSE SILVER-TONGUED ORATOR OF THE PLATTE WELL RECEIVED HERE Science vs. Evolution is Subject of His Eloquent Talk in Which He Confutes the Darwinian Theory, and Proves That God Made Man in His Own Image—Christianity Defended and the Doctrine of Evolution refuted. "Science vs. Evolution or Did God Make Man in His Own Image?" William Jennings Bryan delivered the above entitled lecture to a crowded house at the Anahefin high school auditorium Thursday afternoon. He opened his address by stating that on the occasion of his first lecture beyond the limits of his native state, a man had commented afterwards that Bryan "was not as eloquent a man as he had expected to hear" (and Bryan has always been glad he was not struck dead at that point) for he ended with "But you made the subject clearer than I supposed it could be made." With this end in view Bryan stated that he did not entitle his argument "Bible vs. Evolution," because when one gets so far gone that he can swallow evolution he no longer cares what the Bible says, so he would approach the subject from the standpoint of science. Now science is classified kuowledge. All truth is self-evident. Nothing is scientific that is not true. We do not commit moral change, we would now find changes everywhere, but in over a million species no one has ever found a single change. So science is against evolution. Chemistry gives us an inimitable acquaintance with nature. It is the business of chemistry to take things apart. There are 92 original elements. If it existed, chemistry would have found evidence of evolution. Slauson in his work on creative chemistry says: "All force in nature is destructive. Uranium breaks down and we get radium. Radium decomposes and we get lead. All shows the law of decay and death." No new species (old one extinct). Water was here before plant and animal life, but it has remained everywhere constant unchanging H. 20. It always has been, it always will be that. Chemistry stands across the path and denies the truth of evolution. Ackley in the Worlds' Work, tries to prove the South American gorilla to be the admittedly missing link by arguing from resemblance. In a murder the guilty man wore a hat that resembled the one worn by the defendant, but if he could prove he was 1000 miles away at the time—one fact spoils all the resemblance. When one discards truth he must make the best guess he can. Man is superior to woman in intelligence (says Darwin) gained in the struggle for the best woman. Man lost his hair because the least hairy was preferred by the female. Which did the choosing? If this persisted bald-headed men would have the advantage now. The person who accepts the truth that God made man as he is—an intelligent design is not bolstered, but the evolutionists thus account for the marvelous eye of man: "The sun's rays converged on a freckle and an eye came out and developed. Sound came, then out came the ear to hear it." But why are they so placed? With this end in view Bryan stated that he did not entitle his argument "Bible vs. Evolution," because when one gets so far gone that he can swallow evolution he no longer cares what the Bible says, so he would approach the subject from the standpoint of science. Now science is classified knowledge. All truth is self-evident. Nothing is scientific that is not true. We do not combat nor are we afraid of any scientific truth. All truth's from God, so no two truths can be in conflict. We are not attacking science. But science must have a truth to work with. Science has taught us how to carry power. Science showed us how to convert falling water into electrical energy. As lightning it has always been in the clouds, but science showed us how to make it useful. The doctor who gave us an anesthetic rendered a service. He dealt with the facts. Those who support evolution confuse guesses with facts. Doctors guess, lawyers guess, but the judge has the last guess. A guess is proper, but it is not science. The water witch says water is indicated in this spot, but there is no well until it is completed and water is found. So-called evolution of a plant from the seed is wrongly so called. This is only growth. Whatever is sown is reaped and proves immutability of species directly contrary to evolution. The egg and the chicken is in the same class. If you want another chicken you must have another chicken egg. Another misuse of this term is the evolution of the automotile. They overlook the power of man's superior intelligence. Man's intelligence is also responsible for improved plants and animals. But he cannot change an onion to a lily of the valley, as evolution claims to have done. If evolution is true, man is related to every plant, animal, insect or reptile and Darwin has guessed just such a relationship. He took two laws now discarded—natural and sexual selection. Whenever an individual developed a characteristic advantage, as the stronger, he killed off the weaker. Survival of the fittest. Savages kill off the weak. Never a more cruel Moctrine than this, for it would make vaccination and hospitals for the ferred by the female. God showed good taste in placing the eye where He did. If it was the result of chance why not an eye on the bac kof the head? One cannot believe in Christianity and evolution. So Darwin lost his Christianity. Christians pay school teachers out of our taxes. They teach "That belief in God and immortality is dying out." "Christianity is a state of mind." "No thinking man can believe in God and the Bible." "The Bible is a collection of myths." Why are men who teach such rot allowed to draw their living from Christian tax-payers, while they poison the minds of the Christian's child and rob that child of faith in his father's God. I believe in equality, in free speech. I the atheist wants to spread his lies he should be put on an equality with the Christian and maintain his own separate school to promote his teaching. This, the Catholic and protestant does now in Christian colleges, so why not eject him from the public schools and tax supported colleges and compel him to do the same. The school is not the only offender. Ministers deny the virgin birth of the Christ. That he died to redeem the world from sin and rose again. That He was the son of God. No such man has any business retaining his pulpit. If he does not believe the Bible he should get out. How can be a true representative of a church if he does not believe what it teaches and stands for. Will education prevent war? The best educated caused the great war. Will science prevent Scientists made the awful gases that maimed our boys for life. Give a burglar an education, it only increases his efficiency as such. He took two laws now discarded—natural and sexual selection. Whenever an individual developed a characteristic advantage, as the stronger, he killed off the weaker. Survival of the fittest. Savages kill off the weak. Never a more cruel Doctrine than this, for it would make vaccination and hospitals for the weak wrong, and justified the great world war. Though science has abandoned his premise many still accept his conclusions. Darwin did say in his descent of man that man came from monkeys. He says "the first man probably first appeared in Africa, but why speculate?" If he had asked this question sooner he need not have given utterance to his guess. Prof. Houghton, of Dublin, says of it: "All that was new was false and what was true was old." Now to speak our thought clear, remember that hypothesis is actually a synonym for guess. Darwin confessed himself an agnostic and this in its Latin synonym is ignoramus. Remember the model husband whose vanity was reduced when he found that a "model is a small imitation of the real thing." When Darwin was a Christian he said God put the original germ here. When he lost his faith he worded his guess. Millions of years ago, one or a few invisible germs of life appeared and reproduced by resident interior forces and became the source of all life on earth. If all species are the result of Will education prevent war? The best educated caused the great war. Will science prevent. Scientists made the awful gases that maimed our boys for life. Give a burglar an education, it only increases his efficiency as such. Only the Prince of Peace, Christ Jesus, son of God, can prevent war through a change of heart in man, that will make him love his brother. The one who was raised in the carpenter shop at Nazareth is the only hope of the world. Evolution would rob Christ of the glory of the virgin birth. He whose blood has colored the stream of time. I call on all Christians to rise in defense of the faith to purge our schools and churches of the wolf in sheep's clothes, who would live off the Christian, while they plunder his child. JOSEPH R. ANDERSON, 1131 West Broadway, Anaheim, Cali. WAHLBERG PROPHESIES "Only ten years hence, in 1833., this will be a nation of 125,000,000 people," said H. E. Wahilberg, farm adviser. "Ten years ago, in 1913, we had 96,000,000 people. Everyone interested in the progress of economic affairs should hang this fact up where it will not be lost sight of. "It is not improbable that in ten years we shall have over 70,000,000 actual urban dwellers and fully 90,-000,000 non-farming population. Which is a way of saying that one of the two greatest consuming markets in the world is located within the borders of this country. Each time we tear a month from the calendar more than one hundred and sixteen thousand human beings have added themselves to America—the equiva- lent of a new Nevada annexed every twenty days, year in and year out! Here is a generating force that can reshape the machinery of both produc- tion and distribution under the very eyes of the men who now guide that machinery. "Production does not adjust itself exactly and steadily to demand. Such adjustment moves rather like the waves of the sea; a rise, a crest, a forward sweep, then a pause, or perhap recession, followed by rise, crest and so on. If the demand were constant and could be immediately satisfied, there would be no business cycle. "Agriculture is now in the trough of the wave. Between its crest of 1919, and the next crest lie an unknown number of years—perhaps ten, perhaps fifteen. But if any man questions whether the force exists that can drive it again into one of those long forward sweeps, let him consult the population statistics of the United States. "One main reason why agriculture has not been enjoyig a boom comparable to the urban industrial boom is because demand for foodstuffs is not cumulative. If the normal demand for new houses, automobiles or railway equipment is not met in a given year it is keener than ever the next year. The country has lately been making up some of seven years' unsatisfied demand for the aforementioned basic equipment. "The demand for textiles is cumulative. A family may go a year or two or more without buying much cloth, but eventually it comes into the market again and buys to replenish stocks as well as for immediate consumption. Textiles, in consequence, have custodian that he had "bummed' a freight ride here from Los Angeles. He was told to come to work at noon. According to Pendleton's confession he has spent more than 25 years in jail. Police are puzzled how he manages to commit any crimes as he is behind the bars most of the time. According to his confession to Inspector Smithwick, Pendleton has the following record: 1. Three years in state reformary of Rhode Island for burglary. 2. Seventeen months at Providence Rhode Island, state farm for vagrancy. 3. One year in state prison at Providence for burglary. 4. Two years in state prison at Providence for burglary. 5. Two years in state prison at Providence for burglary. 6. Three years in Parkest prison, Isle of Wight, England, for arson. 7. Seven years in Manchester prison for arson: 8. Three years in Dartmore prison, England. 9. September 16, 1916, expelled from England as an undesirable citizen. 10. Caught in act of arson near Los Angeles city. Was committed to Los Angeles county farm September 19, 1922. 11. Escaped from Los Angeles county farm October, 1922: Pendleton went to Grant's Pass Oregon where he posed as Robert Burton. From there he is said to have returned to Los Angeles. JOPLIN ARRESTED FOR VIOLATING GAME LAW County Treasurer Wants a Test Case in the Court Complaint was filed Thursday against J. C. Joplin, county treasurer, charging him with the violation of the state fish and game laws on twoope. Mr. Fall played an important part in the negotiations that led up to the recognition of Mexico by the United States. He is generally recognized as one of the best posted men in the country on Mexican internal affairs. If this national election in Mexico next July returns to office a man of sufficient caliber to follow the successful administration of Obregon, Mexico is in for an era of intensive development, in the opinion of Mr. Fall. Speaking of the west coast, or that part of Mexico for which Los Angeles will be the natural trade center, he said: "The west coast of Mexico is a veritable empire of undeveloped natural resources. It has harbors, mineral deposits, wonderful agricultural land and water available for irrigation in many places. The climate is healthful and delightful. The agricultural possibilities, to my mind, are greater on the west coast than on the east coast. No oil has yet been discovered on the west coast, so that its first big development, due to outside capital, must be in other lines. Several active candidates are in the field for the presidency. Obregon will be deterred from holding office owing to a constitutional provision of holding an additional term. Several of the candidates are able, intelligent men who give every indication of having the capacity to conduct the government successfully." "The west coast of Mexico will rapidly respond to outside capital and initiative. Already in many communities plans are under way for new roads and other local improvements. That section of Mexico is in about the same position that California was 50 years ago, and I look to see rapid colonization and its agricultural lands put under cultivation." It is keener than ever the next year. Textiles, in consequence, have shared in boom of this tpring. That has had a great deal to do with the relative strength of cotton and wool prices." REMARKABLE JAIL RECORD Expelled from England as an undesirable citizen after having served several jail terms there for arson and burglary, Oscar Pendleton, alias Robert Burton, was Thursday committed to the county jail on an investigation charge. Pendleton confessed to having served more than ten jail terms and also said that he escaped from the Los Angeles county farm according to Inspector Smithwick. Pendleton is said to be a pyromaniac and delights in firing buildings. He told the officers that after setting fire to a structure he would climb a tree and watch the dames. When the fire had a good start Pendleton would come down from his perch and help the fireman extinguish the blaze. The prisoner has served jail terms in Parkest jail, Isle of Wight, England, Manchester jail England, Dartmore jail, England, Providence, Rhode Island jail and in the Los Angeles jail he is said to have told the officers. Pendleton was taken into custody at Birch park, Santa Ana. The park custodian took the man to the police station, where he later made a confession. He is 41 years old and was born in Providence, Rhode Island, he told the Jolice. Pendleton went to the park custodian and asked for a job. He told the County Treasurer wants a Test Case in the Court Complaint was filed Thursday against J. C. Joplin, county treasurer, charging him with the violation of the state fish and game laws on two counts, hunting doves within a game refuge and carrying a gun without a permit in a game refuge. Joplin was arrested on his own property at the head of Bell canyon by Undersheriff French, of Santa Ana. The complaint is understood to precipitate a court battle between the state and game officials and J. C. Joplin, who attacks the validity of a law which includes private property within a state game refuge without the owner's consent. Joplin refused to plead guilty or not guilty when he was brought before Judge Cox, and the arraignment of the case was postmoned until September 28. The grounds of the attack on the state laws which provide for a game refuge designated as four "C" that takes in his private property by Joplin, that the private property is contained within the refuge without the consent of the owner. Old inhabitants remember when the game refuge under question was established back in 1913. State fish and game laws specifically refer to it as four "C." In 1915. At the time of the establishment of the game refuge, those opposing Joplin's action, claim that the consent of every property holder within the game refuge was obtained. LAND OF OPPORTUNITY A. B.
