IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Items of Local Interest Culled from the Files of Former Issues of This Paper From Gazette of March 22, 1873. W. M. McFadden, county superintendent of schools, has apportioned the sum of $13,025 among 6173 children, allowing $2.11 to each common child. This gives the Anaheim district $654.10; Fairview, $107.61; Richland, $139.26; Santa Ana, $963.09; Spring, $174.02; San Juan, $371.36. We have taken these figures from the Star, but they are evidently incorrect. Judge Davis is in San Juan Capistrano. George Fischer is the busiest man in town. Mr. C. Tustin paid us a visit on Tuesday. George and Robert Kuchel have returned to Anaheim. Fischer is building a sidewalk in front of the Planters' hotel. Additions are being made to the peanut palace on Los Angeles street. Stappenback is building a dwelling house for Mrs. Metz on the lot recently vacated by George Horn. Anaheim would like to see and hear Vivian. We'll be glad to see you, Boy. Our devil—who is given to flattery—propounds the following connundrum: Why are the hitching posts in front of the Planters' hotel like John Fischer? Answer: Because they are perfectly upright. Notice—There will be a meeting of the citizens of the southeastern portion of Los Angeles county—without regard to political parties, held at Anaheim, on Saturday, the 12th day of April next, to consult and adopt such measures as may be deemed proper to be pursued in relation to the division of the county; also to select one candidate to be supported for the next legislature, if thought best by said meeting when convened. All interested in county division are invited to attend. —A. Langenberger, John Fischer, F. A. Korn, J. W. Clark, Wm. R. Olden, Wm. M. Higgins, Helman & George, Theodore Rimpau, G. H. Spargeon, M. Calisher, A. L. Bush, A. Travis, J. J. Johnson, M. L. Goodman, R. Leake and others. Deeds Filed—H. Boege to E. F. Caillot. 26 acres of vineyard land in Anaheim for $300. Born—On March 15th, to the wife of R. Menzel, a son. Los Angeles Star please copy. Anaheim's first theatrical entertainment—The Wilton dramatic troupe gave last night the first theatrical performance ever attempted in our town. Our critic does not assert himself an unerring judge of merit and demerit in the theatrical profession, but he must say that in the absence of all the paraphernalia, which usually lend additional enchantment to the stage, the rendering of "Don Caesar de Bazan" was not only creditably but exceedingly well done. The star of the evening was the piquant, ravishing Gipsey queen, Mrs. Georgie Wilton. "Ten Nights in a Bar-Room" will be given tonight. JUST A TRIFLE JEALOUS Business men of high standing come from the eastern coast to southern California every year. Season by season they note the extraordinary growth, and the future of this region is clear to them. But the east as a whole does not realize the stride at which the Pacific side of the continent is going ahead, nor that prosperity is more manifest in this region than in any other part of the country. Only recently a great merchant with interests in many places said "You an actual rivalry has begun. There is every prospect that Los Angeles, now fifth in population among American cities, will in a short time be third. Prophets are not lacking who say that ultimately the western giant is destined to lead all. The reasons are plain enough for all who desire to investigate. Southern California is one of the few sections in which the climate is an actual asset. While by its suavity it invites, the opportunity it offers is not for the pleasure seeker alone. The land is productive. Season by season they note the extraordinary growth, and the future of this region is clear to them. But the east as a whole does not realize the stride at which the Pacific side of the continent is going ahead, nor that prosperity is more manifest in this region than in any other part of the country. Only recently a great merchant with interests in many places said "You people out here do not know what you have. Right in this place is to be the future London of America." He had in mind the community that would be embraced in a circle drawn about Los Angeles. Such a circle would take in a dozen thriving cities, each now wholly independent. It would include a stretch of the most beautiful beach. Within it would be a great harbor to which more and more is being drawn the commerce of the seven seas. Big men, practical and successful men, understand all this, for they know what they see. To the vast majority of New Yorkers or Philadelphiaans the western half of the continent is terra incognita. Chicago they regard as balanced at the outer rim of civilization, and Denver lost in the wilderness. As to southern California it is a land of dreams. New York trade papers are chary about making record of facts easily obtainable. They hate to say that Los Angeles has more automobiles per capita than the metropolis. They fight shy of admitting that the average income tax paid in this district is higher than that of any other district in the United States. They are a little timid about setting forth the figures showing increase in manufacturing, in import, export, and returns to the customs office. In a dim fashion they are beginning to understand that PARTY LOYALTY UNDERLIES OUR FORM OF GOVERNMENT In the course of an address at Bridgeport, Connecticut, Admiral Sims said the greatest curse in America today is party loyalty. The obvious foolishness of this statement does not need controverting. It is its accord to a certain degree with like talk frequently heard from public speakers nowadays that merits a passing reference. Very many perhaps most, of our ANAHEIM GAZETTE uplifters speak disparagingly of party loyalty. They treat it as fit were one of the seven deadly sins. If some of them have not anticipated Admiral Sims in designating it as our greatest curse, they have made statements approaching this in foolishness. Party loyalty is not our greatest curse. It is not by any means a curse. It is rather an asset to the country. Where it goes wrong is when it becomes so blind and unswerving that no consideration will move those professing it. Even then, only circumstances make it a danger to the country. If there were no parties, our federal and other governments would be in a state of chaos. We should have one set of officials pulling one way and others pulling in a different direction. Reformers of government, as well as those who aspire to reform other things, are not generally of a nature that allows them to compromise. They see only their own way as the right, and any attempt to make them deviate from that which they have set up for themselves as a standard of right is looked upon by them as a temptation of the evil one, to be resisted unto death. The usual experience of cities and other municipalities with reform administrations is that they cost more than crooked ring rule and get the city nothing and nowhere. Parties give better government than do scattered groups of so-called reformers. Party loyalty is a good thing, provided it is not carried too far. When a party attempts to work rank injustice or any form of crookedness, it is not disloyalty to it, to fight those leaders who would lead it astray. But if it were not for parties, we should not have our government today. It is hardly too much to say that if the nation had been torn by contending factions, instead of having been governed for most of its history, for some sheep lie a good share of the time, have been nibbled considerably on the lower branches. Some orange men declare that they are spoiled on this account, but Mr. Sheets has learned that by keeping the sheep in the corrals during the season when the new growth comes and the young fruit forms, these limbs will bear as heavily as any other part of the tree. It is only a few trees directly around the corrals which are affected, as the sheep do not make a practice of eating the shade. Since the only ill effect is in the looks of the trees and since the grove is a permanent investment and is not for sale, the owner does not think that this counts a great deal against it. The crop this year is far larger than even before and greatly exceeds that of any of his neighbors. The equipment of the sheep department is of the cheapest possible construction, but provides ample shade and shelter at all times. It is Mr. Sheets' intention to replace all of this with substantial but inexpensive buildings during the next few months, as he feels that his sheep are no longer an experiment. The grove is not fenced, but because his adjoining neighbors are not the kind who favor cover crops, the sheep do not leave the place. As it is more or less out of the way he has never been troubled with dogs, which are often times the bane of the sheep men. HOT CROSS BUNS IN HISTORY Originated as Part of the Spring Festival in Honor of Goddess Eostre Hot cross buns, the eating of which is one of the ceremonies of Good Friday, were first baked as part of the spring festival for the goddess Eostre, whose pagan name has clung to the season. The heaten cakes have never been dropped from the regular routine of the feasting, either. Dozens of early clergy tried to stop the more or less ceremonial indulgence in them. They prohibited them. But nothing happened about it. So they had them marked with the cross and took them over. The delights of children, and of most grown-ups—eating cakes and kindling bonfires—are actually the two oldest methods of celebrating in the world. They go back to the time that the regular set of gods and goddesses were just in the process of being established. Most every group seems to have started off with a sun-god who was worshipped by fires and lights and with a kind of goddess of plenty, or earth diety, or queen of... Party loyalty is a good thing, provided it is not carried too far. When a party attempts to work rank injustice or any form of crookedness, it is not disloyalty to it, to fight those leaders who would lead it astray. But if it were not for parties, we should not have our government today. It is hardly too much to say that if the nation had been torn by contending factions, instead of having been governed for most of its history, for some very important parts, too, by one of two big parties, it would have collapsed. Such loose statements as that of Admiral Sims could be disregarded, had they come from someone less distinguished. His name and reputation give them a weight which they do not in themselves merit. SHEEP IN ORANGE GROVE The orange growers said it could not be done because the sheep would damage the trees and the sheep men said the same thing because it would be impossible to keep enough sheep on a small acreage to do any good without having them get sick and die, as sheep are rovers and cannot be kept in confinement all of the time. In the face of these arguments and many others, L. E. Sheets, of Pomona, has a nice flock of sheep in his grove and they are doing well. The question of fertilizer is a great one with him as his grove is situated north and east of the city of Pomona on land which has been more or less of a wash and is very loose and sandy and had little if any humus when he first began to develop it. He has always been an advocate of heavy fertilization and has spent a lot of money on his grove in this way. He much preferred animal manure for the bulk of his fertilizer, but it is hard to get in the Pomona district so he wanted to engage in the livestock business in some form in order to get it. Since he is in business in Pomona he could not care for cows or hogs or chickens himself and did not have the room to put in large enough herds to pay him to employ a man to look after them. The idea of keeping sheep came to him, and about 5 years ago he began his experiment with a few head of grade ewes from New Mexico. These were very largely of Navaho blood and not very good ones at that. He has kept strict track of all of his operations and is highly delighted with his BAD NEWS FOR MOTORISTS Tin cans, paper bags, cracker crumbs and solled paper napkins are responsible for some bad news which effects every auto owner in the western part of the United States, but particularly in the southern counties of California, according to officials of the Automobile Club of Southern California. Official word is just received by the auto club that motoring parties will no longer be allowed to camp in Palm, Andres and Murray canyons. This step has been made necessary, according to the United States field service report, because of the rubbish, pollution of water and fire hazards occasioned by careless auto parties who have previously camped in these beautiful canyons of southern California. This indicates that strenuous measures are going to be taken by the government in forest reserve canyons to preserve the beauty of nature unadorned by festoons of sardine tins, orange peels and cast-off papers. Motorists who take their lunches in the canyons of southern California and throw what remains to the four winds, thus cluttering up the face of nature, are going to be responsible, says the auto club, for the restriction on camping in many places unless they are careful from now on. With the closing of Palm canyon, which is one of the most beautiful spots in the west, an important step has been taken toward the preservation of the natural wonders of this part of America. Louis Denni, Treas. Dr. A. H. Domann, Director O. A. Ingram, Director Dr. C. S. O'Toole, Director Mr., Sheets has considerable sentiment in his make-up, as is shown by the fact that near the center of his grove is a large five oak tree which he treasures very highly, though his more practical neighbors scoff at him for refusing to sacrifice it in favor of the vife orange trees which could be planted in its place. Around this tree he has built the corrals and shelters for his sheep so that the room it takes up is not necessarily lost. For the first two years the sheep did not touch the orange trees, but gradually they began to acquire a taste for the young leaves and the trees around the corrals, under which the DODGE BROTHERS MOTOR CAR Few days are too cold for comfortable driving in this sturdy car.
