OIL FIELD NOTES All records for the Santa Fe Springs field were broken Saturday evening when a well being drilled by the Petroleum Midway on the Baldwin lease "blew in." In 24 hours the well flowed 9300 barrels of 36.4 gravity oil. The three-inch pipe was drilled to 4212 feet and pulled back 15 feet. Although the well was under control, the Petroleum Midway forces on the Baldwin and Stanklee lease adjoinning, suspended other operations temporarily 1 more to take care of the enormous flow from the gusher. Much credit for the successful handling of the well was given to Park Little, field superintendent for the Petroleum Midway. The Baldwin lease is just west of the Norwalk and Puente Mills road and just north of Telegraph road. Oil field operations reported week ending January 27, show 32 news wells started, compared with 28 the previous week. The total new wells this year is 127, compared with 112 same date last year. Tests for water shut-off 25, compared with 34 previous week. Yearly total to date 124; total to same date last year 112. Deepening or drilling jobs 25, compared with 14 the preceding week. Total to date this year 69; total to same date last year 60. Abandonments 5, compared with 7 the preceding week. Total to date this year 16, total to same date last year 42. Santa Fe Springs production has passed the 95,000 mark and is on a steady increase. Fortunately, this new field is the most favored in that the recent price cut did not hit the high gravity production a shard as the lower grades. The average production of the field runs close to 33 the north and east, and if this had dip-north line is practically fixed now. On the Matter property the Petroleum Midway brought in its first producer, a 1300 barrel well. Matter 2-1 as it is designated, shut oo water with the 8 1-4 inch pipe at 4383 feet. The cement was drilled out and the well started to flow. The well made such a nice flow that it was decided to allow it to continue. The well is flowing through the tubing and is making 29 gravity oil. Huntington Beach is becoming just one wonder after another in way of oil producers. When the Amalgamated Oil company a few weeks ago brought in the world's record deep producer at 4949 feet, it was thought that would hold the field for a while. Now the Shell Oil company come alongith a well that showed 6000 barrels daily. Huntington Beach's biggest producer was drilled on the Ashton property, an old producer was redrilled and land deepened. In the early history of the Huntington Beach territory, Ashton 1 became famous as a producer in the upper zone. Deepened to 4750 feet, the well started off with the modest output of 2500 barrels per day. The production started climbing and it was only a few days until the well was flowing at the rate of 6000 barrels a day. The great well has over 1300 feet of oil sand back of it and will undoubtedly make a record for a long life producer. On account of the shortage of storage and pipe line facilities the producer had to be cut back to 3800 barrels. The Moore Oil syndicate is now listed with the Huntington Beach producers. The syndicate after a checkered career, all the hard luck that is known to the oil business and other troubles of no less degree has emerged with a 1600 barrel well. The Moore Oil syndicate completed its well in the deep boosted the big output day. Coming in unceremonies the company's Buller well barrels and will no production. Within finishing point they twisted off and left feet in the hole. Fortunately, this new field is the most favored in that the recent price cut did not hit the high gravity production a shard as the lower grades. The average production of the field runs close to 31 gravity, and this oil brings better than a dollar a barrel. The feature of the Springs field is the feverish haste to get wells into the deep Meyer sand, get the big high gravity production and get as much as possible of it now. The Bell View Oil company is now a producer at Santa Fe Springs. Just exactly a year ago this company spudded in and drilling what at that time was the fourth fell in the field. The rapid progress of the Bell View was halted by a bad fishing job that compelled the loss of the hole. No. 1-A was started about four months ago, and completed late last week a 2000 barrel producer. The Bell View company's well was completed at 3910 feet, and is making the usual 31 gravity oil. It is the intention of the Bell View Oil company to put a deep sand Meyer well on the Grohn's 1-A property, letting the first well take care of the Bell sand production. Approximately a 1000 acres is what the Elliott Petroleum company has proved up for the west side of the Santa Fe Springs field and relieved a lot of anxiety. At 4336 feet the Elliott stopped drilling, came back and set a string at 4316 feet. This well, really only a few feet in the sand, is flowing through a 6-1-4 water string and making 800 barrels of oil that is running very close to 36 gravity. At the time the Elliott ePtroleum company started drilling, its location was regarded as of a rather wild cat nature and the drilling and development was watched with interest. It is believed that the Elliott core drill is responsible for the well, as there were no showings of any importance in the ditch as the drilling proceeded. The core revealed the sand. George F. Getty was Santa Fe Springs' largest individual producer for the past week. Mr. Getty completed a 4000 barrel well at No. 5 Drill. The Moore Oil syndicate is now listed with the Huntington Beach producers. The syndicate after a checkered career, all the hard luck that is known to the oil business and other troubles of no less degree has emerged with a 1600 barrel well. The Mopre Oil syndicate completed its well in the deep sand, finishing it at 4600 feet, and getting a 26 gravity producer. Two companies at Montebello are not satisfied with their wells and will make better one out of them. The Pan-American Petroleum company completed well on the Pasadena lease recently at 4100 feet and put it on production. Water prevented the well from making anything like a satisfactory showing. The Pan-American Petroleum company will shut off the water and return the well to commercial production by cementing a string of 4 3-4 inch pipe at 3960 feet. The Standard Oil company's deep test west line well, Howard & Smith, made a nice showing at 4385 feet, developed water and efforts are being made to free the well from this trouble and put it under the best possible production conditions. The spectacular feature of the development well at Bellflower has subsided and the Cal-Petro Oil Producers' syndicate, pioneers of the field, have settled down to straight line drilling in a very hard formation at 2800 feet and making slow progress. No. 2 spudded in last week and has been making 100 feet a day. The log of No. 1 is checking up about 300 feet shallower than No. 1. The Union Oil company's Community test well at Downey has passed the 4800 foot without finding any very encouraging oil showing. The drilling is going nicely in hard sand. Most of the operators are getting a little discouraged when a well passed the 5100 foot mark and no oil in sight. Such is not the case of the Pomona Oil company, now drilling the deepest test well ever drilled in San Bernardino county. The Pomona Oil company's well at the close of the week showed a depth of 5110 feet, the formation being a hard sandy shale that carried producer. On account of the shortage of storage and pipe line facilities the producer had to be cut back to 3800 barrels. 5. Drilling his record well to 4610 feet and completing it in the Meyer sand a 33 gravity clean oil producer was the result. C. C. Julian will have something to show for its work at Santa Fe Springs in a few days. Two wells, Nos. 1 and 4, have set pipe preparatory to going into the deep sand. No. 1 set 614 at 4283 feet, and No. 4, the 814 at 4460 feet. Both wells look good and there seems to obe little doubt as to their making nice wells as soon as the cement plugs are drilled out and the sand opened up. Julian No. 2 is a steady and consistent producer at 1,200 barrels per day. The Shaff-Noble Oil syndicate failed to get a commercial producer in the Bell sand in its No. 1-A at 2538 feet, and will go deeper. The Schaff-Noble well shows that in one part of the field at least the Bell sand has been pretty well exhausted. That the north line of the field is dipping sharply is revealed by the Standard Oil company's Brownrigg-Kellar No. 2, which has passed the 5050 foot mark and has not found the production indications that made No. 1 a nice well at 4762 feet. Brownrigg-Kellar No. 2 is only a location away to very encouraging oil showing. The drilling is going nicely in hard sand. Most of the operators are getting a little discouraged when a well passed the 5100 foot mark and no oil in sight. Such is not the case of the Pomona Oil company, now drilling the deepest test well ever drilled in San Bernardino county. The Pomona Oil company's well at the close of the week showed a depth of 5110 feet, the formation being a hard sandy shale that carried just enough gas and oil colors to make the management want to continue drilling. The Pomona Oil company, it is understood, intends to carry the drilling on to 5500 feet and make an exhaustive test well. The Crittenden well in the San Jose Hills did not materialize last week as scheduled. On drilling out the cement it was found that a complete water shut off had not been effected. At 1950 to 2055 a nice showing of oil sand was struck some time ago, the drilling, however, was continued to 2700 feet in search of a deeper sand. Bottom water developed and decision was reached to go back and test out upper showings. In the San Joaquin Hills some interesting developments are taking place. The Wucherer-Gray Oil company at 4425 feet in its second well is finding gas in such quantities that it is attracting attention. The Irvine Hills regions has been condemned by geologists for a number of years. Long Beach and Signal Hills new production record of 140,000 barrels was substantially increased by the Anchor Oil company, Joseph B. Dabney and the Leonard Interests. The arrival of these three companies wells LINCOLN'S KEEN OF HUMOR This is a tribute coln's sense of humor was a great American or his memory each ing his birthday as cause he was one of dents, the country name and his famous posing memorial in tal. Undation or excitement strain of his nerve his irresistible s boosted the big output 6000 barrels per day. Coming in under rather difficult circumstances the Anchor Oil company’s Butler well started off at 1200 barrels and will no doubt increase its production. Within a few feew of the finishing point the drill pipe stuck, twisted off and left several hundred feet in the hole. The well was put on production with the lost drill pipe in the hole, and considering the obstruction and the production condition, the well is making splendid showing. It is the intention of the Anchor Oil company to drill another well on the property, hoping to get it down and get it completed in the deep sand. The Anchor Oil company’s Butler No. 1 was put on production at a depth of 3682 feet. Joseph B. Dabney's No. 11, drilled to 3800 feet started off with a nice run of oil and a gas output variously estimated from 12 to 20 million feel. The well is as valuable for its gas output as the oil and will probably be made a commercial gas well. At No. 10 Mr. Dabney recently completed at 3848 feet a well that is making several hundred barrels. On the White property the Leonard interests have just completed a 2000 barrel well. Teh new producer was finished at 3930 feet, and is making 28 gravity oil. The Fischer Oil company’s well is to go ahead again. The Agee Drilling company yand the Miller company, both of Los Angeles, have entered into an agreement to underwrite the stockholders of the Fischer Oil company on the Hill which leads to the belief that four hundred feet more of hole will put the well on production. The well stopped drilling at 4420 feet about a year ago, when things on the souht slope of the Hill did not look very encouraging. The Miller company have taking some funny storys. When he was waiting for the returns from the Republican convention in Chicago in 1860, he was under great nervous tension, but he amused himself and entertained the staff of the Springfield Journal by telling one good one after another, until he received the telegram announcing his nomination. There was never a time, his biographers claim, when Abe Lincoln was too grave or too melancholy to fail to see the humor of a situation. Even at times when he seemed most careworn and weighed down by the great problems and responsibilities with which he was struggling, he would suddenly chuckle to himself, a twinkle would come into his eyes, and he was “reminded’'of some anecdote that applied to the case in question. On one occasion it is told of how a very sad and solemn member of congress paid a visit to President Lincoln at the white house during one of the darkest periods of the civil war. The member seemed deeply depressed. So did the president, who nevertheless found his sense of humor sufficiently active to think of a funny story. He began to tell it when he was interrupted by the member, who said he was there on important national business and not to hear funny stories. Mr. Lincoln, it is recorded, looked hurt, the twinkle departed from his eye, but he motioned the member to a chair, and said, "Sit down, sit down, and let me explain. I have the very highest respect for you, and a regard not much less than your own, I guess, for the nation at large; but if I didn’t get a chance to laugh sometimes I'd die in my tracks. I can be as serious as you are, but not all the time. Which reminds me——," and he concluded with the story he had begun. There were others, too, who did not seem to understand that Lincoln's sense of humor was not only a strong The Fischer Oil company’s well is to go ahead again. The Agee Drilling company and the Miller company, both of Los Angeles, have entered in to an agreement to underwrite the stockholders of the Fischer Oil company on the Hill which leads to the belief that four hundred feet more of hole will put the well on production. The well stopped drilling at 4420 feet about a year ago, when things on the souht slope of the Hill did not look very encouraging. The Miller company have taken over the Fischer Oil company’s interests at Culver City also, and plan to start drilling there soon. After having about all the troubles a company can have, the Republic Petroleum company has decided to abandon its first Long Beach venture. The Republic Petroleum company got No. 1 down to 3100 feet, where complicated mechanical troubles and fishing jobs developed that made further progress impossible. That the Shell Oil company will develop to the fullest extent the deep sands on the Hill top section of the Long Beach field is signified by the intention to redrill and deepen four wells scheduled for immediate re-drilling and deepening are Dobbins 2., 3., 4 and Foster No. 1. The Shell Oil company’s big Nicholson well continues to be the pride of the field. Nicholson No. 1 was finished about ten days ago at a little over 3600 feet and is holding steadily at five thousand five hundreds barrels daily. After several attempts to shut off water, the Wiley well at Tobin No. 1, succeeded and a few days ago brought in a 300 barrel producer. The well was finished at close to 3800 feet. On account of sand trouble and the small production it is quite possible that the well will be deepened. The Wiley well is located on what appears now to be the most promising section of the northwest portion of the field. Indeed Lincoln could tell good jokes, and he seemed to have an inexhaustible supply at his command. There are volumes of them now published which prove amusing and profitable reading matter. But Lincoln's "jokes" consisted of more than mere comedy. They were generally told for some purpose—to cinch an argument, prove a statement, or point out a moral.
