OIL FIELD NOTES
Oil field operations reported for the week ending January 6, show 27 new wells started in the state, compared with 17 the neck ending January 7, 1922. Tests for water shut off were 32, compared with 19 for the first week in 1922. Deepening and redrilling jobs 11, the same as the first week last year. One notice of abandonment was received, compared with four for the first week of 1922.
While Santa Fe Springs did not bring in any big gushers, the last week netted two nice wells for the field, and there were other developments that were more important than increasing the production. Anxiety about the west side of the field has been relieved considerably by the finding of the Meyer sand in the Elliott Petroleum company's No. 1. At 4336 feet showings were noted that puts the Elliott well in the clear for Meyer sand production.
On the south side of the field a sand has been found at a depth deeper than the Meyer sand and the discovery may be the salvation of the extreme southern section. The discovery of the deep sand is being kept in great secrecy and the details will probably not be disclosed for some time, not until the company making the discovery has secured all the lands it wishes, and is ready to make the showing public.
In connection with the development of the south side of the Santa Fe Springs field, the Hamilton No. 4 well made the field and it is not generally known that the name of the man who had faith in Hamilton 4 and was really responsible for the well coming into well at Fowler No. 5. The Amalgamated Oil company's new producer is another deep success, being completed at 4600 feet. On the Pearce property the Amalgamated has what looks like another world record well. The Pearce well was finished at 4942 feet, the same depth as Miley-Keck No. 19, the world's greatest deep producer, and the well looks equally as good.
The Catalina View Oil company, one of the Jameson group, was completed at 4440 feet, and started off at a little better than a 1000 barrel well. It is understood that the Catalina well is a gift to the employees of the Jameson oil company. Mr. Jameson is one of southern California's most successful operators and it seems he is willing to share his success with those who helped him make it.
The fact that the Huntington Central No. 2 is now a producer will be glad news for a lot of people all over southern California. This well has had, perhaps, one of the most checked careers of any of the field, and has at last come into commercial production. The well has changed management several times, but was lucky recently to fall into the hands of one Ben E. Lamb, an oil operator of 25 years' experience in a half dozen or more of the leading fields both in the east and the west. Mr. Lamb took the Huntington Central well over on a contract to put it on production for 30 per cent of the production. Mr. Lamb succeeded in shutting the water off, and the well is making a 150 barrels of 22 gravity oil free from sand and water.
One of the most talked of completions at Huntington Beach for weeks is the Shell Oil company's Ashton 4-A. This new producer was redrilled and locate in the Crown other 5000 barrel w output. In connection with the development of the south side of the Santa Fe Springs field, the Hamilton No. 4 well made the field and it is not generally known that the name of the man who had faith in Hamilton 4 and was really responsible for the well coming into production has never been mentioned. That man is Vernon M. King.. Mr. King has been doing the field geological work for the McKeon Drilling company and it was on his strong recommendations and earnest persuasion that the McKeon Drilling company kept on and finished the well. At one time the McKeon' Drilling company had moved part of the equipment away and was preparing to abandon the well. Mr. King begged that the equipment be replaced and the drilling continue another 100 feet. King won his point, proved his assertion, and Hamilton No. 4, a 200 barrel well, became a realization.
The Doelke-Thomas syndicate is making some splendid progress on its Fullerton well. It will be remembered that the Federal Drilling company drilled two holes for the Doelke-Thomas company, neither one getting below 2200 feet. The Doelke-Thomas syndicate took the well over to drill as a private venture and now has some 2500 feet of hole. Some of the hardest drilling that has ever been experienced in the Brea-Fullerton field is being found now at 2500 feet, two and three feet a day is the best the drill can make.
At 4960 feet, the Pomona Oil company is getting some showings that may yet make an oil well. The formation shows a hard coarse sand that carries oil colors and considerable gas. The Pomona well has been in the course of drilling for almost three years and if any company is entitled to a producer the Pomona Oil company is.
At La Mirada the Nevada-Ventura Oil company is getting some splendid oil showings at 3600 feet and on. On showing at 3628.3632 feet revealed four feet of oil sand. The Nevada-Ventura company well is being drilled by the McKeon Drilling company, a company that has earned a reputation
One of the most talked of completions at Huntington Beach for weeks is the Shell Oil company's Ashton 4-A. This new producer was redrilled and put on production at a depth of 4924 feet and came in a 2500 barrel well. The Ashton lease is one of the most famous in the field, as it was on this property that the Shell Oil company brought in the first big well of any importance in the northeast section of the field. The Shell Oil company's work in developing deep production on the Ashton lease is one of the most notable achievements of the new year and puts a new and particularly high value on this section of Huntington Beach. A year ago it is understood property could have been bought for $350 dollars an acre, the same property is now being refused at seven and eight thousand dollars an acre.
The Standard Oil company came in for a share of the production last week, when the biggest well the beach field has yet produced was completed by the Standard Oil company on the B.14 lease at 4448 feet. This well is now rated at 4100 barrels daily and producing consistently. The Standard Oil company's second producer resulted in a 1750 barrel per day well at Huntington B-12, and was completed at 4580 feet. Drilling on the Talbert well, now one of the deepest test wells at Huntington Beach, is nearing 5000 feet. Pacific 1-A, at a little over 3900 feet, has the ear marks of a producer.
The Texas Holding company has redrilled and deepened its No. 1 to 4500 feet and got for this work a 2000 barrel well. The big producer is making 29 gravity oil and will undoubtedly be one of the long lived producers of Huntington Beach.
Seven new wells put on production at Long Beach last week added 20,000 barrels. A month ago it was thought that the peak of production had been reached at Long Beach, but now the condition has changed radically. The northwest section of the field has acquired the habit of ushering in three and four thousand barrel wells, and make a satisfactory foot and is drilling a leum Midway enjoys being the second land of the Long Beach district's blgwell, Ryding its 4200 barrels work regularity, and most consistent proBeach territory has

At La Mirada the Nevada-Ventura Oil company is getting some splendid oil showings at 3600 feet and on. On showing at 3628.3632 feet revealed four feet of oil sand. The Nevada-Ventura company well is being drilled by the McKeon Drilling company, a company that has earned a reputation for difficult completions.
In the Puente hills the Chino-Corona United Oil company is making preparations to drill to the 4600 foot level before considering any ideas of abandonment. At 4455 feet the formations has been showing a hard grey sand that looks like a water sand, but carries no water.
In the last couple of weeks there has been noticeable revival of activity in the San Joaquin hills district. A number of wells that have been standing suspended or idle, have resumed drilling. The companies who have resumed operations are the H. T. & K. syndicate, the Laguna Oil association and the New Santa Oil association. It is thought that the recent good showings the Wurcherer-Gray Oil company had in its No. 2, may be responsible for the revival of activity.
Huntington Beach completed five big wells last week, added 10,000 barrels new production and raised the daily output to better than 88,000 barrels. The field's well average has gone over 400 barrels, and some of the production is running as high as 31 gravity.
The Amalgamated Oil company started the big campaign at Huntington Beach by bringing in a 200 barrel
Seven new wells put on production at Long Beach last week added 20,000 barrels. A month ago it was thought that the peak of production had been reached at Long Beach, but now the condition has changed radically. The northwest section of the field has acquired the habit of ushering in three and four thousand barrel wells, and the limit of the productive area does not seem to have been marked by any means as yet.
Keck syndicate 4 headed the list of new producers with a well at No. 1 that started off at 5000 barrels daily. The big Keck syndicate well was completed at a little over 3800 feet, and is flowing through a 4-3-4 inch oil string.
The Acme Oil company, another of the "Blue Tank" Vern Dumas organizations, came through with a 1500 barrel well on the Dameron property. Vern Dumas had a hard time getting people interested in the northwest side of the field and fought a great battle getting his companies financed and "over." The Dumas companies are now making good one by one, and half of his organizations now have paying productions.
Joseph Dabney, one of the pioneer operators of the Long Beach district, was credited with a 2800 barrel well when he put his No. 5 on production. Mr. Dabney has developed a nice production for his syndicate in less than a year and his work is pointed to with some pride.

locate in the Crown City, added another 5000 barrel well to the field's output. Jergins Trust No. 2 represents a Federal Drilling company completion at 2797 feet and almost 1000
feet of oil sand was drilled through
before putting the well on production.
Judging from the big showing, the
well made on initial production, there
is every reason to believe the well
will increase its output and make a
six or seven thousand barrel well.
The Shell Oil company's completion
for the week at Long Beach netted 6,
500 barrels daily. The Shell Oil company's big well is Pickler No. 4, a
completion at 4200 feet, making 4000
barrels daily. On the Shaver lease
the Shell Oil company finished No. 1
at 4270 feet and realized a 2500 barrel well. In addition to the two new
wells just put on production, the Shell
Oil company has three more about
ready, all of which will make big producers.
The United Oil company redrilled,
and deepened its Jones No. 1, and put
it back on production a 2500 barrel
well. The Jones well was redrilled to
4125 feet.
The Petroleum Midway's Fields No.
1, the well that really opened up the
northwest side of the field, failed to
make a satisfactory producer at 3560
feet and is drilling ahead. The Petroleum Midway enjoys the distinction of
being the second largest producer in
the Long Beach district. The company's blgwell, Ryder No. 1, is making its 4200 barrels daily, with clock
work regularity, and is one of the most consistent producers the Long Beach territory has yielded.

The company's bi gwell, Ryder No. 1, is making its 4200 barrels daily, with clock work regularity, and is one of the most consistent producers the Long Beach territory has yielded.
Drilling with hole in good condition at 6700 feet is what the Standard Oil company has accomplished at Torrance Estate No. 1. The well becomes a record for southern California deep drilling and will be a very conclusive proof of the existence of oil in the intervening territory between Huntington Beach and Signal Hill. Drilling a hole a mile and a quarter deep with the rotary is a rare accomplishment, and the Standard Oil company has already made a rotary record that would be difficult to surpass.
POSTERITY'S BURDEN
When we hear on all sides of us arguments for and against the cancellation of the war debt, it seems that we are unthinkingly selfish.
There are many open hearted and open handed people that have a very friendly feeling toward our European brethren, and would like to help them on their way to security and peace, but who utterly lack the foresight to see two inches past their own nose. They seem to entirely forget that the effects of their colossal open handedness will not only be borne by the present generation, but the brunt will fall upon those that are yet to come.
Others like to thrust the "whole pesky business" behind them and hide behind a bromide "the war is over."
Well! So it is. But suppose we have another war, what then?
War time brings its own extravagances—in money, life and peace of mind. War time is no time to count the cost—yet is it necessary to add more burdens to the already overladen shoulders of a growing country?
It was necessary to equip an army for a great war, but ttoally unnecessary to countenance the frightful waste that helped to yoke a seemingly unending debt upon the people.
An idea of the cost of the appalling waste of the recent war should be sufficient—without the additional cancellation of the war debt.
Was it necessary?

It was necessary to equip an army for a great war, but tooly unnecessary to countenance the frightful waste that helped to yoke a seemingly unending debt upon the people.
An idea of the cost of the appalling waste of the recent war should be sufficient—without the additional cancellation of the war debt.
Was it necessary?
Was it necessary to spend nearly $4,000,000,000, to obtain 72 cannon?
Was it necessary to spend $116,194,000 on nitrate plants which produced no nitrate.
Was it necessary to spend $1,$51,511,000 for airplanes that never reached the battle front in France.
Was it necessary to spend over $100,000,000 for docks and terminals at which no ship ever tied up?
Was it necessary to contract for 41,000,000 pairs of shoes for $3,500,000 men?
Was it necessary to buy 945,000 saddles for 86,000 cavalry horses.
Was it necessary to buy five nose bags for each four-footed animal owned by the government?
Was it necessary to purchase 36 sets aplice for spur straps for each officer entitled to use them?
Was it necessary to buy $21,000,000 worth of ambulance harness for an ambulance service that had been entirely motorized.
These figures will help the public to understand how war profiters grew rich. The tarpayers of this generation will have to pay them. The war is over. War taxation is a heritage left of the country by thoughtless and greedy people who are blessed—or cursed—with only one eye, and that in the middle of their own forehead, to see only their own reflection.
