OIL FIELD NOTES The week's biggest success at Santa Fe Springs fell to the Union Oil company. Completing Howard No. 2 at 3808 feet the Union Oil company well started off at 3450 barrels and in a few days increased its output to 3800 barrels daily. The Union Oil company has started a lot of new work on the Santa Fe Spirings discovery property, the Meyers lease. In addition to hav-Meyers 4, 5, 6 and 8 drilling, the Union Oil company has lumber on the groun for No. 7, has made locations for Nos. 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and has lumber on the location for No. 17. Meyer 4 at 4650 feet is showing some oil and gas and is looking rather good. On the Bell property No. 1 the old standby, continues to produce better than 2100 barrels of 27 gravity oil daily. In addition to having eight wells drilling the Union Oil company has made four new locations. Flood No. 1, the west side outpost well, reached 5245 feet and met with a rather bad fishing job. To date this well has not shown any indications of oil and theer is a chance of it being abandoned soon if the tools are not recovered. The Elliott Petroleum company and the Federal Drilling company are to be congratulated on the splendid success they are having with the Elliott well. Little or no trouble was experienced in getting out the oil string, and drilling is going ahead nicely at 4400 feet. It is the intention of the Elliott Petroleum company to find and produce from the Meyer sand. Elliott has talked all the chance work out of deep drilling with his core barrel, so there is little or no chance of the Meyer being passed up in this company. The Fairview Oil company has plenty of money to go ahead with its work and will continue the drilling of its No. 2 well. W. S. Smulling, formerly head of the Standard Oil company's production department and manage rof the Fairview Oil company, has tendered his resignation to the Fairview company and will devote his time and attention of the York-Smulling Drilling company, of which he is senior member. An impression was gained not long ago that the wells and holdings of the McIntyre Bros. have become the property of the Roseburg Petroleum company. The impression is without foundation, as the McIntyre Bros. still hold their Huntington Beach leases and properties and intend to hold them. Many of the leases of the McIntyre Bros. seem to be in line for the new deep production development in the beach field. Already the McIntyre Bros. have made preparations for the redrilling and deepening of one of the wells. Again and again the Long Beach field has proved to be one of the greatest fields in the west for the small operator to get into. Company after company has gone into Long Beach, secured small holdings, and brought in big wells in a few months. The latest small company to score a big success in this way is the L. H. Mitchell and Sons Oil company. The little company started drilling three months ago, and a few days ago completed at 3815 feet, a 3800 barrel wel. A barerll o foil for every foot drilled is splendid results. The Acme Oil company, one of the Vern Dumas "blue tank group," has another nice producer. Acme No. 1 was completed at 3490 feet and the foot mark, where they struck in the first wwMcKeon is doing the far a splendid record. At Downey the Umpany's community tested the 4700 foot ma showing an yoil ind months ago the opinion was divided, but no who believe that she a chance for coming The Union Oil company good test hole, and work. Interest increases inings the Pomona Oil ting at 4880 feet shows a fine sand, trying a lot of gas, and is of lenough to paint. The U not need to become the Federal Drilling company are to be congratulated on the splendid success they are having with the Elliott well. Little or no trouble was experienced in getting out the oil string, and drilling is going ahead nicely at 4400 feet. It is the intention of the Elliott Petroleum company to find and produce from the Meyer sand. Elliott has taken all the chance work out of deep drilling with his core barrel, so there is little or no chance of the Meyer sand being passed up in this test well. Through the use of the Elliott core barrel a 4700 barrel well was completed a few weeks ago at Long Beach. The Standard Oil company "copied" the productions honors at Huntington Beach by bringing in a 3650 barrel well. The Standard Oil company completed the big well in the deep sand at a depth of 4446 feet and brought in a 27 gravity producer. This new well is now the largest producer in the Huntington Beach field. This record well was brought in at No. 14 on the Huntington Beach lease. Farms worth No. 1 the well that has been watched perhaps more closely at Huntington Beach for month or more is not ready for a production try out yet. Drilled to 4860 it was found necessary to make a second cementin. Talbert No. 1, one of the deepest test wells now drilling in the beach field, is getting close to the 5000 foot mark. Many new producers completed in the deep sand will be tried out for production before the end of the week. The Catalina View Oil company has completed its No. 1 at 4440 feet and landed a 4 3-4 oil string with the expectation of bringing in a big well. The Catalina View Oil company's well was drilled by Jameson and it is understood he gave the well to his employees. The Texas Holding company has complete the redrilling and deepening of its No. 1, a former producer, at 4500 feet and the well is ready to go on production. Indications are strong for the biggest well the Huntington Beach field has yet produced for the Texas Holding's No. 1. The Kiseau Oil syndicate has attained a depth of 4450 feet and is beginning to show rather strong. The Moore syndicate is another well that is looking exceedingly good. The The Acme Oil company, one of the Vern Dumas "blue tank group," has another nice producer. Acme No. 1 was completed at 3490 feet and the big well coming in with an initial production of 2500 barrels per day, is flowing through a six and a quarter inch oil string. Vern Dumas and the companies he organized at Long Beach seem to have come to the turning point in the road and have been getting a number of big wells. Dumas attracted considerabel attention more than a year ago when he went out on the northwest front and located the Cal-Mex well. Jack Doyle has something pretty nice on tap at the Clune-Doyle No. 1, redrilled and deepened to 4200 feet. Some four hundred feet of new oil sand was opened up in the deep zone and a good well is expected. 3563 feet of 6 1-4 was set and the well will produce through a 4 1-4 oil string. The Henderson Petroleum syndicate found the Fischer Oil company's abandoned well in such shape that it did not warrant the going ahead and spending a large amount of money to put it in condition to continue drilling. Recent developments on the south slope of the hill led the Henderson Petroleum syndicate to believe there might be a chance to develop deep production. The Fischer well has been standing idle for about a year and during that time the hole filled up several hundred feet. A. T. Jergins is making preparations to bring in a new type of oil well at Long Beach. Municipal No. 2 at 3900 feet and some 800 feet in the oil sand looks like the biggest well the Long Beach field has ever produced. It is Jergins' intention to continue drilling until a thousand feet of oil sand has been opened up. With a thousand feet of sand to pll on a six eight thousand barrel well will be easy. The Federal Drilling company is doing the work for the Jergins Trust and much of the success of the big well when it comes in will have other countries piled up their own bickering over Turkish concession selves, but the American been accepted by G doubtless will be adference. About 200 hours a day, in an certain portion before the annual Tennessee river complete the redrilling and deepening of its No. 1, a former producer, at 4500 feet and the well is ready to go on production. Indications are strong for the biggest well the Huntington Beach field has yet produced for the Texas Holding's No. 1. The Kiseau Oil syndicate has at, tained a depth of 4450 feet and is beginning to show rather strong. The Moore syndicate is another well that is looking exceedingly good. The drilling in the Moore is now at 4500 feet and the gas is so lively that drilling is going ahead under some difficulty. The Huntington Central No. 2, a well that will stand out in the history of the development of Huntington Beach as long as oil is associated with the field, has been put on production. The well has had one of the most checkered careers of any well at Huntington Beach. It was started soon after the field opened, has changed hands a number of times and has had about all the drilling difficulties known. Huntington Central No. 2 is now pumping a little oil and some water. It is not known as yet whether it will make a commercial producer or not. Another rumor that has gained considerable headway, so much that many are believing it to be a fact, is the taking over of the Fairview Oil company by W. M. Keck and the Keck Drilling company. Mr. Keck nor the Keck Drilling company have no connection whatever with the redrilling and placing of the well on production. Mr. Keck takes the Fairview No. 1 on the Goldsmith property at 4088 feet to complete for a stated amount. In consideration of the fact that Keck has interests in the Fairview field many have taken it for granted that he has taken over the Fairview Oil The McGregor syndicate is going to endeavor to prove that E. J. Miley was wrong when he quit the Pacific Petroleum Irvine well at 3027 feet. The well is located on the south side of the Hil land at the time Miley discontinued drilling at that depth the outlook was not very promising. The McGregor syndicate is a local Long Beach concern and has taken hold of the abandoned well with good intentions. The Metropolitan Petroleum comig well stratled the Long Beach operators with an initial flow of 2500 barrels early last week. The new producer, competed at 3671 feet, has settled down to 1450 barrels daily and is making a 25 gravity product. Southern California's deepest wild cat test well is now being drilled by the Standard Oil company on the Torrance estate tract. Drilling is now at 6600 feet and the outlook cannot be said to be very promising. The drilling of a hole 6600 feet deep with the rotary is a masterpiece of the drilling art. At La Mirada the Nevada-Ventura Oil company's No. 1A is beginning to take on the appearances of a real oil well. Drilling is now nearing the 3600 foot mark, where the big showing was struck in the first well drilled. Jack McKeon is doing the drilling and so far a splendid record has been made. At Downey the Union Oil company’s community test well has passed the 4700 foot mark and is not showing an oil indications. A few months ago the opinion of the experts was divided, but now there are few who believe that the Downey field has a chance for coming into production. The Union Oil company is making a good test hole, and doing careful work. Interest increases with the showings the Pomona Oil company is getting at 4880 feet. The information shows a fine sand, this fine sand carrying a lot of gas, and at times there is oil enough to paint the tools. THE PROPER REMEDY The American observers at the Lausanne conference are doing as effective work for the future welfare of Europe and for the conservation of American rights in the near east as if they were duly accredited delegates to the meeting. Their announcement that the United States stands for the open door in Turkey created consternation among some of the other countries present, which had been bickering over a division of Turkish concessions among themselves, but the American policy has been accepted by Great Britain, and doubtless will be adopted by the conference. The constant competition among the nations of Europe for political and commercial advantage was the cause of the world war and is responsible for unsettled conditions there now. The United States does not need to become entangled in agreements with those nations in order to point out the error of their ways. Just as the Democrats had aboot agreed upon Al Smith, the newly elected governor of New York, as a candidate for the presidency in 1924, a prominent southern Democratic newspaper tries to break the combination by asserting that no man named Smith was ever even nominated for the presidency. To say nothing of election. Now if all the Smiths unite in an effort to resent this imputation, they may be able to force the nomination of Al. THE ANSWER Probably the best answer to those who have contended that the new tariff law would prove to be prohibitive and cut us off from foreign commercial intercourse is the necessity for an increase over the annual appropriation for customs administration "in order that the congestion in the appraisers' stores, especially at New York and Los Angeles, may be relieved." Other ports are suffering from congestion, and the service hopes to remedy these conditions through the employment of a larger force of men. OUR FAVORITES People who have invested heavily in European securities naturally want the United States to cancel European debts in order to enhance the value of their holdings. Naturally, also, the holders of American securities are opposed to cancellation as that would injure the value of their holdings. In this race of selfish interest one cannot help hoping that the holder of American securities wins out.
