OIL FIELD NOTES Oil field operations reported the week ending December 16, show 22 new wells started, compared with 26 previous week. The total new wells this year is 1389, as compared with 1264 the same date last year. Tests for water shut off 32, compared with 39 previous week. Yearly total to this date 1646; total to same date last year 1374. Deepening or redrilling jobs 19, as compared with 14 previous week. Total to date this year 758; total to same date last year 655. Abandonment 11, compared with 7 preceding week. Total to date this year 266; total to same date last year 212. On account of the proximity of one of the Santa Fe Springs syndicate Packford wells to Hamilton No. 5 at Santa Fe Springs, the impression was gained that Hamilton No. 5 had been taken over and would be drilled by the Packford interests. Packford and the Santa Fe Springs syndicate have no interest or connection with Hamilton No. 5. The offset to the famous Hamilton No. 4 will be drilled by the McKeon Drilling company, the drilling company that made on of the most wonderful records that has ever been made in southern California. The financing of Hamilton No. 5 is in the hands of the H. L. Bentley company, a company that has made a reputation for handling and putting on clean and straight deals. The drilling of Hamilton No. 5 will be watched with great interest as there is already speculation as to its becoming the wonder oil producer of the south side section of the Santa Fe Springs territory. Last week R. W. Edens closed a deal for the properties and holdings of the Hurst Oil syndicate. The deal carries with it extensive holdings and puts the Orange County Drilling company in a position to get some of the deep production of the field that is making Huntington Beach famous. E. G. Lewis is doing a unique piece of work at Huntington Beach. The Palos Verdes manager has taken over the lease formerly held by the General Petroleum company known as Community No. 1, has a rig erected over the old hole drilled to 4400 feet and is about ready to start drilling. Mr. Lewis believes the General Petroleum company stopped a few hundred feet from the top of the sand and his work will be watched with more than passing interest. The Long Beach field was presented with a problem last week when five of the leading and old time producers either quit altogether or dropped below commercial production. The Bush Oil company lost a 600 barrel well when its Best No. 2, stopped flowing. This well has been producing at 3250 feet. The General Petroleum company's S. C. O. C. O. No. 2 stopped flowing, the well was making 500 barrels and was producing at a depth of 3500 feet. The Hager-Dennison Oil company was the third to lose a well. No. 1 on the Doran property a 1000 barrel well at 3400 feet quit off short. The Henderson Petroleum company's Dodge No. 1, an 1100 barrel well was the largest producer of the group that suddenly ceased producing. The sudden stopping of production in these wells is something of a mystery. It is believed that either sand or water or possibly a combination of both new producer is making oil. The Superior Oil Co., No. 1, took on a new oak a nice showing of oil 4500 feet. Up to winthe well had not very promising signals showing relieves a lot. Sixty three hundred with the rotary is the Standard Oil Company Torrance Estate No. 1 of the deepest test well in southern California pretty conclusively that trict between Long Huntington Beach. Drillin ahead and an exhaust made before the Staite lease. TOURNAMENT The sale of seats for Roses "East ball game of January december 13, having bled the sale to permanent under their seat contender of a permanent Tournament of Rose called the "Rose Bowtie" to purchase as many as the holder held of all holders availed them portunity. There are now some the "Rose Bowl," which more seats than the at Tournament park commode. This may of the largest in the its full seating cap reached by a good m wonderful records that has ever been made in southern California. Aside from one section of southern California none of the dozen or more wild cat wells now drilling are looking encouraging. The showing the Cal-Petro Oil Producers' syndicate got at Bellflower seems to put this field at the head of the list for a future field. The Union Oil company's Downey community is now at 4600 feet, drilling in conglomerate, the outlook not being at all promising. Drilling has been suspended by the Standard Oil company at Buena Park. While there is not official announcement that the well will be abandoned it is the general consensus of opinion that there is nothing there. In the Bixby hills the National Security has 4450 feet of hole drilled, and some recent showing are lending encouragement to production within the next 100 feet. The Fairview Oil company has decided to spend no more time fishing and will side-track the tools lost at 4088 feet and go ahead. The Fairview Oil company has had some very good showings, and there is little doubt about this company presenting southern California with a new field. The chief concern in the field of wildcats now is the Seal Beach Oil company. Drilling has passed the 4500 foot mark and aside from shale showings and gas there has been nothing very strong. Opinion is divided on the outcome of Seal Beach. The drilling is getting down to a point where something will be showing one way or the other pretty soon. The Seal Beach Oil company deserves a well for its pioneering work and may get its reward. Huntington Beach stepped into the lime light last week when the Amalgamated Oil company brought in a well that for production and depth has no equal anywhere in the world. The world record well was brought in at Miley-Keck No. 5, when a 4942 foot well came in at 2360 barrels, produc- A. T. Jergins' Trust No. 2 is becoming noted for the depth of hard oil sand that has been drilled through since the 10 inch casing was set. At 2943 feet the ten inch was plated and from this depth on to 3600 feet the formation has been a very hard oil sand, the sand has been heavily saturated and everything points to another big well for the Jergins syndicate. The heaviest loser in last week's catastrophe of oil wells quitting production at Long Beach was the Marine Oil corporation. The Marine's No. 4 a 1900 barrels per day well stopped flowing. The well was completed several months ago at 3620 feet and has been one of the field's consistent producers. The Petroleum Midway company is making a determined effort to shut off the water Fields' No. 1 and prove up the north line of the Long Beach field. There seems to be little doubt about the production, but the water has been giving them some difficulties. Fields' No. 1 is 3577 feet deep and it is here that the water is giving the difficulty. Faith in this section of the field is evidenced by the fact that the Petroleum Midway has Fields' No. 2 drilling. The Rice ranch is about to bring in another nice producer. On a production test, well No. 2, at 3534 feet, flowed at the rate of 100 barrels daily. Rice ranch No. 1 is cleaning out and some more will probably be made before the well is put on production again. It was tried out at 3665 feet. The Shell Oil company added a nice producer to the Long Beach field when Patton Wilson No. 1 at 3600 feet started off at 1200 barrels daily. Huntington Beach stepped into the lime light last week when the Amalgamated Oil company brought in a well that for production and depth has no equal anywhere in the world. The world record well was brought in at Miley-Keck No. 5, when a 4942 foot well came in at 2360 barrels, producing 27 gravity oil. This new wonder well of southern California is flowing through a 28-32 bean and is under a pressure of 680 pounds. In this well the longest oil string set inside of a water string was accomplished, and done without injury to the water string or encountering any difficulty. The first showings of oil were struck soon after the 8 1.4 inch was set at 3688, and continued with hardly a break to the 4942 foot mark. It required 987 feet of slotted pipe to take care of the oil bearing sand. The big well is located the furthest out on the structure and proves up five other wells for the Amalgamated Oil company, namely, Peace 2, 3, 4, Fowler 5 and Dennison No. 2. This means that all the Amalgamated Oil company will have to do to get five more big wells is to run them down to the 5000 foot mark and bring them in. The Huntington Signal, a company that started at Huntington Beach in the boom days, is now the possessor of a 2000 barrel well. The Huntington Signal Oil company's well at 3600 feet proved a small producer, making considerable water. The drilling of the well to 4392 feet resulted in something worth while and illustrates again the possibilities the Huntington Beach field has for deep sand production. R. W. Edens and the Orange County Drilling company is coming back to the place from which they started. new producer is making 23 gravity oil. The Superior Oil company's Kline No. 1, took on a new complexion when a nice showing of oil was struck at 4500 feet. Up to within a few days ago the well had not exhibited any very promising signs and the good showing relieves a lot of anxiety. Sixty three hundred feet of hole with the rotary is the record the Standard Oil company has made at Torrance Estate No. 1. This is one of the deepest test wells ever drilled in southern California, and proves up pretty conclusively the outlying district between Long Beach and Huntington Beach. Drilling is still going ahead and an exhaustive test will be made before the Standard abandons the lease. TOURNAMENT OF ROSES The sale of seats for the Tournament of Roses "East and West" football game of January 1, started December 13, having been prefaced by the sale to permanent seat-holders under their seat contract. Each hold, or of a permanent seat in the new Tournament of Roses stadium—now called the "Rose Bowl"—was entitled to purchase as many additional seats as the holder held of permanent seats and practically all permanent seat-holders availed themselves of this opportunity. There are now some 55,000 seats in the "Rose Bowl," which is about 15,000 more seats than the old grand stands at Tournament park would ever accommodate. This makes the bowl one of the largest in the country though its full seating capacity is not yet reached by a good many thousand, as NOTICE In the Superior Court of the County of Orange, State of California.
