BRANDING OF SYKES
IS PROVED FRAME-UP
In a signed statement of what he avers to be the truth concerning the circumstances of an attack made on him in his room October 22, when lodine was used to brand the letters U. S. C. on his forehead, William Sykes, a former soldier and a student at the southern branch of the U. C. charges that his own classmates perpetrated the outrages to "get even" with Sykes for fancied indifference to student honor and also as a "frame-up" on U. S. C.
The branding of Sykes, who was tied to his bed and gagged by three assailants, created an acute situation in which resentment and antagonism developed to a high pitch among the student bodies of the two institutions. For some time after the attack, which followed the burning by S. C. students followed burning by U. S. C. students versity branch classmen for a bonfire on the university branch campus and a free for all fight, it was thought that injurious acids had been used to burn the initials into the forehead of the student and former soldier.
In his statement, made public recently, Mr. Sykes asserts that his failure to participate with fellow-students in defense of the bonfire material, resulted in a scheme to punish him, and at the same time place the blame on students of the rival institution.
His charge is supported by another student of the university branch, Robert Millward Fellows, who, in a signed stament, asserts he overheard classmates complaining of the failure of Sykes and another student to participate in the battle between the two student bodies and that the comment branding was a frame-up against the University of Southern California, exclusively by and among the students of the University of California Southern Branch.
"I immediately after this event happened I informed Mr. Beekman, executive secretary to Dr. E. C. Moore, director, that I was confident that the University of Southern California had nothing to do with it whatever.
"I am making this statement freely and voluntarily and in fairness to your university, and for correcting the public, as far as within me lies, the injustice done to an innocent party.
Sincerely yours,
(Signed) WILLIAM SYKES.

His charge is supported by another student of the university branch, Robert Millward Fellows, who, in a signed statement, asserts he overheard classmates complaining of the failure of Sykes and another student to participate in the battle between the two student bodies and that the comment was made in his hearing that "we ought to do something to those fellows" and "ought to pull something on U. S. C."
The statements by Sykes and Fellows were obtained after investigation by police detectives and Pflakerton operatives directed by Attorney M. W. Bowen, representing the University of Southern California. Mr. Bowen submitted a report of his investigation and findings to the university authorities. Considerable satisfaction was expressed by students and officials of U. S. C. over the apparent solution of the mystery attack and the subsequent absolution of all blame thereafter attaching to the students of the University of Southern California.
The statement by Sykes is addressed "to the student body of the University of Southern California and is as follows:
"In order to, as far as possible, repair and rectify the irreparable injury done your institution in reason of being held responsible by the public for the branding of my face on October 22, 1922, this is to inform you that the

INCOME TAXPAYERS
Thirty-five thousand taxpayers in southern California have been notified by Collector of Internal Revenue Rex Goodcell that the fourth and final payment on their income tax will be due on December 15. Taxpayers who fail to meet this final installment will be classed as "delinquents" and the unpaid balance will be subject to immediate demand upon which penalties and interest will apply. Remittances should be made by check or money order and payable to the collector of internal revenue. If cash is sent the letter should be registered.

California’s Agricultural
Three
Five Hundred
Here are facts about California which should make every one of her citizens prouder than ever before of this Commonwealth.
And they should be sent broadcast over the United States so that citizens of other States may more fully appreciate the wonders of California.
Here is a State that is 780 miles long and from 150 to 350 miles wide, with a total area of 158,297 square miles, nearly as great as the combined area of New York, Ohio, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New Jersey.
Within its boundaries lie the highest and lowest points in the States. Mount Whitney rises 14,502 feet above sea level, while Death Valley sinks almost 400 feet below sea level.
And here are mountains, rich in mineral and timber resources, valleys of amazing fertility, world-famous harbors, cities teeming with industrial activity, lovely homes and contented people.
Agricultural Income
$700,000,000
Of the fourteen leading counties in the United States in total value of crops, seven are California counties.
The total annual income from the field and tree crops of this State is $587,600,591. Dairying adds an income of $99,004,358.

You can't get something for nothing, but every fond father realizes when the bills for his daughter's dance frocks come in, that it is easy to get nothing for something.

Agricultural Wealth Approximates
Three Billion Hundred Million Dollars
zens over $92,000,000 per year for raisins and grapes.
California’s field crops bring great wealth, too. California has been the leader in the raising of barley since 1852, and her annual income from this crop aggregates nearly $30,000,000.
California is the second largest hay and rice growing State in the Union. The former returns over $100,000,000 a year and the latter over $11,000,000.
Great crops of wheat, corn, oats, beans, cotton, tobacco, hemp, rye, potatoes, sugar beets, melons and garden truck are harvested every year and add their millions to California’s wealth.
Farm Values Increasing
A study of comparative figures reveals the fact that though the average size of farms is decreasing, the average value of farms is rapidly increasing. Note these figures:
Average acreage per farm: 1920 1910 1900
All land: 249.6 316.7 397.4
Improved land: 100.9 129.1 164.9
Average value per farm:
All farm property: $29,158 $18,308 $10,980
Land and buildings: 26,122 16,447 9,759
Implements and machinery: 1,156 414 294
Live stock: 1,879 1,447 928
Another important factor in California’s agricultural wealth is an enormous investment in live stock which totals over $200,000,000. The investment in poultry runs over fifteen million dollars; more than eight million dollars’ worth of eggs alone were shipped from California in a recent year.
Three billion five hundred million dollars is the agricultural wealth of California and she has great additional wealth in her natural resources and her growing industries.
