FREE FROM EUROPE'S
BLOODY BROILS
The American people saved themselves from being chained to that body of death, the league of nations, by turning their government over to the Republican party—and they did this by the most decisive majority ever recorded in the annals of mankind, says Ex-Senator Albert J. Beveridge, of Indiana.
We have faithfully obeyed the people's emphatic mandate; and we will continue to obey. We did not go to Genoa, we will not go to Venice, we will not mix up with foreign quarrels, plots and intrigues anywhere on earth—we will not go to war unless and until we are attacqed.
We stand by the traditional American policy so long maintained that it is now a vital element of American institutions—the policy best announced by Washington, of honorable friendship for every nation and political partnership with no nation.
In view of what has been and is happening in Asia Minor and Turkey, and what is sure to happen in other parts of disrupted Europe, what intelligent and patriotic American man and woman does not now thank God that we have been delivered from any obligation to pour out more billions of American money and sacrifice the lives of American young men on one side or another of perpetually recurring old world blood feuds.
Suppose we had bound ourselves to take part every time any part of Europe erupted—which side would we take? Which side would we have taqen in the recent trouble, which, seemingly, has been suspended for the moment—but only for the moment?
France and England have been in sharp disagreement; and the developing policies of those recent allies, but hour. In an opinion testing labor members represent those representing just where cent or even a few wage" on the basis.

"If the claims of the Southern Pacific and its supporters were true, the Niles Sand, Gravel and Rock Company would probably be one of the greatest sufferers in the State, for our shipments, which amount to more than six thousand carloads of material annually, would be subject to two and three line hauls, due to the fact that we ship entirely within the boundaries of California.
However, we are emphatically in favor of the unmerger of these two railroad systems. The major transportation evils in California will be solved when the actual separation takes place. The United States Supreme Court has restored to California the competition between railroads that has been our vital need.
"Strenuous efforts will be made to nullify in effect the decision of the United States Supreme Court. We have wired the Attorney-General of the United States and the Interstate Commerce Commission our views in this regard, which are that if anything is permitted to hinder or block the carrying into full force and effect of the United States Supreme Court decision, then there would be a real calamity to the future growth and prosperity of our State.
"The decision of the court plainly declares that the two lines shall be so separated that 'each can compete fully with the other' and also that 'the public will be served efficiently.' As to the two-line hauls, I believe that in the working out of the separation, the court will arrange so the shippers will not be forced to pay higher rates because of the unmerger. The Union Pacific has publicly committed itself to this policy, in the event it secures control of the Central Pacific."
Idaho Endorses Rail Separation
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 6—Fred G. Athearn, Western counsel for the Union Pacific Railroad Company, announced today that he is in receipt of telegraphic information to the effect that the Public Utilities Commission of Idaho had adopted unanimously a resolution directing its president to appear before the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington and opposed the continued control of the Central Pacific railways by the Southern Pacific Company.
The Idaho Commission, which corresponds to the California Railroad Commission, will also oppose any move on the part of the Southern Pacific to retain temporary control of the Central Pacific pending final disposition of the case.
Lodi Shipper Supports Court
LODI, Cal., Nov. 6—L. B. Bailey, secretary of the Lodi Growers and Shippers League, has written a strong letter of protest to Wallace Alexander of San Francisco, chairman of the Shippers' Committee Against Dismention.
November 13th to 18th is gas appliance week in California, according to a statement made by J. C. Hayden, local district superintendent of the Southern Counties Gas company. Hayden explained that not only gas companies, but gas appliance dealers as well, are making plans to feature their appliances.
The local gas utility with twenty-two offices in southern California, is taking a very active part in gas appliance week, according to Hayden. The company for the past eleven years has been selling standard gas appliances which meet the requirements laid down by the engineers of the American Gas association. The company has sold thousands of its appliances in southern California.
In addition to a lively advertising campaign which the gas company and appliance dealers will wage in southern California, many of the gas offices are neatly decorated for the occasion. Recent shipments of heating and cooking appliance here indicate that the gas company intends to make a big

Lodi Shipper Supports Court
LODI, Cal., Nov. 6—L. B. Bailey, secretary of the Lodi Growers and Shippers League, has written a strong letter of protest to Wallace Alexander of San Francisco, chairman of the Shippers' Committee Against Dismemberment, on the latter body's attitude on the Central Pacific-Southern Pacific unmerger situation, it was announced here today. The letter, it was announced, protests the activities of Alexander's organization in "opposing the restoration to California of the freedom in railroad competition which we certainly need now more than ever."
The Shippers' Committee Against Dismemberment is opposing the mandate of the United States Supreme Court of May 29, which orders the dissolution of the Central Pacific Southern Pacific combine on the grounds that it is a monopoly in restraint of trade.
The letter follows:
"Daily contact with the growers and shippers of the San Joaquin Valley, a practical knowledge of the existing transportation situation and a study of the results which will be forthcoming from an unmerger of the Central and Southern Pacific, has convinced me that the carrying out of the United States Supreme Court mandate is indispensable to the future growth and prosperity of agriculture, commerce and industry in Central and Northern California.
"The Southern Pacific swept the State off its feet as soon as the decision was announced on May 29th and many organizations passed resolutions as did our own body, before they realized the import of the subject, or had heard the 'other side.'"
"I have written Mr. Wallace Alexander, not only that I am strongly in favor of the unmerger, but against the methods employed by his so-called Shippers' Committee Against Dismemberment and all other actions opposing the responsibility for formia of the freedom petition which we certainly need more than ever before."
"The principal object of gas appliance week," explained Hayden, "is to bring before the gas consuming public of the state the economy and efficiency of modern gas appliances. The natural gas served by our company in this community and in five counties of southern California, tends to give the gas consumer the greatest possible heating value. With the natural gas burners, brought to a high state of perfection, the consumer is enabled to get every possible heating value from the gas. Our company follows very closely the rules and specifications laid down by the American Gas association in regard to gas appliances. Only those ranges and heaters endorsed, by that national organization are being handled by our company."
"The LIVING WAGE"
In laying their case for an increase of wages before the rail labor board the maintenance-of-way men hold that common labor should be paid a "living wage" of about seventy-five cents an hour. On the basis of a ten-hour day this would give the commonest form of common labor a wage of $7.50 per day and $45 for a full six-day week.
The rail labor board has given them an increase ranging from twenty-three cents to twenty-five cents and from thirty-five to thirty-seven cents per appliance which meet the requirements laid down by the engineers of the American Gas association. The company has sold thousands of its appliances in southern California.
In addition to a lively advertising campaign which the gas company and appliance dealers will wage in southern California, many of the gas offices are neatly decorated for the occasion. Recent shipments of heating and cooking appliance here indicate that the gas company intends to make a big event of gas appliance week.
Only those ranges and heaters endorsed, by that national organization are being handled by our company."

upon this "five-per-family" tradition and upon an admitted "makeshift and guess." Nobody knows what a "living wage" for a family, or even an individual, should be. It depends upon the family or the individual. Humanity's spending proclivities and standards of living cannot all be poured from the same mold. It cannot be done for a class if it cannot be done for an individual. A wage that would be a "living wage" and a "saving wage" for one family would not be sufficient to keep another of the same size and even of the same surroundings from want.
The "living wage" is a beautiful heart-warming phrase, but every man and every class reads a personal and special meaning into it. To the track laborer, just now, it means seventy-five cents per hour. Tomorrow it may mean more. Seventy-five cents an hour for r him means a general, proportional and differential increase all the way up to those aristocrats of the cab and silver-plated lanterns. Such an increase would add better than $3,000,000,000 a year to the payrolls and cause a deficit of more than $2,241,000,000 annually. On the forty-eight-cent hour basis the deficit would amount to $378,000,000.
Unless the government took over the lines and taxed the nation to pay the rail men's wages, the roads would become twin streaks of rust and grass would grow between the ties. If this same theory was extended to other in-dustries our feet would be set on the Russian ladder.
It would be a grand thing if every worker in America could have a "living wage" based on his own ideas of what a "living wage" ought to be. Unfortunately the money that meets payroll must come from somewhere. No industry, whether privately owned, run by the government or operated by a commune, could find money enough to meet that kind of a payroll.

FULFILLING PROMISES
The great reductions in the military forces and military expense of the United States demonstrates the sincerity of this administration in its promise to reduce government expenditures and make possible a reduction in taxes. The reduction in expenses must come first, of course, and the Republicans have paved the way for future reductions of taxes even greater than the reductions already made by the Republican congress.
