SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HAS ACHIEVED HONORS Proof that southern California has achieved honors long striven for by other sections of America—namely, to be the motoring paradise of the world—has just been accorded the Auto Mobile Club of Southern California. According to club officials, this section of the state has lately been the subject of much good-natured comment in the press of the northern counties for its activity in promoting the interests of motorists who visit here from the east and from Oregon and Washington. In some instances, it is stated, the northern press has gone so far as to point out that perhaps southern California has misrepresented facts in regard to the condition of trans-continental routes leading across Utah into northern California. The auto club has hastened to meet the kindly criticism with a denial that in any instance has the organization issued road information contrary to the actual conditions of highways leading westward across the continent, and has consistently maintained road crews on all highways both summer and winter, so that its information may be correct and fair to all concerned, working only in the behalf of the touring public. Greater good for the entire state seen by the club in the awakening of the northern counties to the need of improved road conditions commensurate with the southern counties, and for the widespread dissemination of news regarding the touring facilities of local highway systems. It is pointed out by the club touring bureaus that what is good for one geographical sectio not the state is good for all and particular pride is expressed in the activity of the southern counties service, United States department of agriculture. This decreasing use of a fundamental commodity, according to forest experts, is not a result of decreasing needs, but a result of forest exhaustion. It is not being accomplished without economic hardship or without curtailment of industrial expansion. It is not a temporary condition that will automatically adjust itself, for even at this reduced rate of consumption we are still cutting our forests more than four times as fast as they grow. The situation proclaims, according to the forest service, that if we are to remain a nation of timber users, we must become a nation of timber growers. In 1906, when American lumber production reached its highest point, the average per capita consumption of lumber in the United States was approximately 500 board feet. Since that time the per capita consumption has rapidly and consistently decreased until in 1920 the average citizen used approximately 316 board feet. This is a reduction of 37 per cent in 13 years, or nearly 3 per cent a year. Should this decrease continue at its present rate, by 1940 the downward sweep of consumption would approach zero. This, of course, will not happen. The average consumption will ultimately reach a fairly stable level, which will depend mainly upon the extent to which our devastated forests are made again productive. The consumption of lumber is not evenly distributed over the various regions of the United States. Previous studies have indicated that the states of the Pacific northwest, now the last great stronghold of big lumbering operations, had a much higher per capita consumption than those of other regions, but the present figures are the first which give information for all factory has grown to reach its been fair with the men working for him. THE BEAN HARVEST IS IN FULL SWING Harvesting of lima and baby lima beans is beginning to get well under way in the five counties of southern California, in which these varieties are grown, according to a field report received from R. L. Churchill, secretary and manager of the California Lima Bean Growers association. Threshing has not proceeded far enough to permit of an accurate estimate as to total production, Churchill said. Some fields have yielded no more than last year, and others an appreciable increase. However, few, if any fields, are yielding more than 85 per cent of the amount estimated six weeks ago. Sizes of limas from early deliveries shows rather small—an evident result of the August heat wave. "From best information now obtainable, it appears that a liberal estimate of the total production of limas would be not to exceed 1,200,000 bags, and of baby limas a total of about 160,000 bags, which will be considerably less than last year's crop of baby limas and carry-over," Churchill continued. "Since last year's production of limas amounted to about 800,000 bags, and the carry-over in coast warehouses and in distributing markets probably 300,000 bags, it may be seen that the increase in limas is not likely to exceed 100,000 bags, and if so, will be less than the average annual consumption. "As about 1,100,000 bags of limas were marketed last year, mostly at prices ranging from $5.75 to $9.25, it seems reasonable to assume that 1,200,000 bags could be marketed this season, mostly at shipping prices ranging from $6.25 to $7.00 per hundred, when markets are bare and business conditions improved; providing growers will keep posted as to the real depend mainly upon the extent to which our devastated forests are made again productive. The consumption of lumber is not evenly distributed over the various regions of the United States. Previous studies have indicated that the states of the Pacific northwest, now the last great stronghold of big lumbering operations, had a much higher per capita consumption than those of other regions, but the present figures are the first which give information for all states upon the same basis. Naturally the greatest per capita consumption occurs where wood is plentiful and the population is relatively small. In Fashion and Oregon the consumption appears to be between 900 and 1000 board feet annually per person. Next come California, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming, where the rate of consumption is from 500 to 800 feet per person annually. In these states timber is relatively plentiful as compared with the density of the population, and a very considerable expansion has been taking place in the development of farms and other natural resources. The group next lower in per capita consumption includes the lake states, and sweeps southwesterly across the priarie states through Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. In this group the annual consumption is between 300 and 500 feet board measure per year. Practically all the remaining states fall into a class in which the annual consumption is 200 to 300 feet per year. This group extends in a broad belt from Texas along the southern and eastern Atlantic coast to Cape Cod. Mass. It also includes North Dakota, Iowa, Utah and Nevada. The lowest consumption of all is in Rhode Island, the District of Columbia, South Carolina and Georgia, in which the average consumption is rated between 100 and 200 feet per year. In the District of Columbia there is an extreme situation in density of population. No lumber is produced, there is little farming or manufacturing, and the entire population consists of urban dwellers in the city of Washington, who live mainly in houses of brick and stone and require relatively little lumber. All the lumber used in the District of Columbia is imported from other states, just as it is in some of the non-timbered prairie states. "Shipments to cover sales made for September delivery are going forward as rapidly as beans can be delivered and cleaned, and numerous telegraphic requests for quotations are coming in from various markets indicating the wholesale trade are thinking about purchasing for October shipment. "The California Lima Bean Growers' association Wednesday confirmed carload sales of both limas and baby limas for shipment during the first half of October at $6.25, and car of September shipment limas at $6.50 f.o.b. (rail) cars. Considerable quantities of limas have been purchased from growers during the past week at from $6 td $6.15 per hundred. "Free buying and selling is expected to develop within the next two or three weeks." DWINDLING FORESTS If the food consumed by each man, woman and child were reduced by one-third, the pinch of hunger would soon be felt and the cry of famine would undoubtedly be raised. Yet substitute the word "wood" for "food" and you have exactly what has happened in the use of lumber; for the per capita consumption has dropped from 50 board feet in 1906 to 316 board feet in 1920, says the forestation. In general, the older and more densely settled states show the lowest average consumption. The state characterized by heavy agricultural operations come next, and the greatest use per individual is indicated in those states where there is still considerable timber and where the extension of home building is proceeding at a rapid rate using the abundant material provided by the forests. The states are going through an evolutionary process, building first of lumber and later of more costly materials as the forests recode before fire and axe. THE RICHEST MAN On Wall street authority, Henry Ford is said now to be the richest man in the world. He could capitalize his business at two billion dollars and pay five per cent dividends on the amount. The figures ought to set Wall street to thinking. Only a short time ago the magnates of that financial region were telling how they had Ford at their mercy. He had not played according to the rules of the game, and they intended to declare him out. Ford is an extraordinary man. As it is inevitable that some individual will be richer than any of the others, it probably is satisfactory that the role has fallen to Ford. He made a cheap type of vehicle which met the needs of the country. He sold it at a figure so modest that no competitor has followed the price. While his factory has grown to magnitude, he has been fair with the thousands of men working for him. As a rule he has paid more than the union scale of wages. He does not believe in cheap labor. In many respects Ford is impractical. His effort to bring the great war to a close was a spectacular bit of folly. In a paper owned by him he permits vicious racial attacks. On the stand in a libel case he displayed under cross-questioning, an ignorance of history and of current events that would have shamed a ten-year-old school-boy. But he has made money, not by trickery, not by connivance with any group, but by inspiring and doing great things of a material sort. It is more pleasing to contemplate such a fortune as Ford's, with its influence, its steady tribute to the wage-earner, its stimulation of kindred industries, and its direct benefits of thousands, than to think of the millions owned by men who never have toiled, and whose wealth has come through speculations and exactions from the public. The Orange County Harbor association, consisting of men prominent in the active business life of the county, has been organized to promote industrial activities for the harbor, and it has had, a number of propositions under consideration. It is confidently predicted that within one year after the dredging plans are expected, the bay will be the location of a number of industrials.
