AIRPLANE TO LOCATE ALASKA'S LOST LAKES Locating and photographing undiscovered lakes in the national forests of Alaska are the latest uses to which the airplane has been put, says the forest service, United States department of agriculture. It has long been known that there are lakes on the headlands and islands traversed by the inside passage between Seattle and Skagway that do not appear on any map. During the New York-Nome flight made by army aviators, lakes were frequently sighted which could not be found on the latest and most authentic maps of the territory. Tales of unknown water bodies are constantly being brought in by trapper and prospectors... Less than a year ago a lake 4 1-2 miles long and 1-2 mile wide was discovered at the head of Short bay. This lake has over 1000 acres of surface area and is less than 1 1-4 miles from tidewater, yet because of the surrounding country's rough topography has remained unknown and unnamed. Recognizing that many other of these "lost lakes" may be sources of valuable water power, the forest service has laid plans to map this no man's land of the north by means of aerial photographs. A few days' flight, it is said, will be sufficient to cover the area with a degree of accuracy that would require many years and great expense to accomplish by ordinary methods. TOOK CUE FROM WILSON It is not surprising that foreign diplomats, as charged by Senator Watson, of Indiana, have been interfering in matters of domestic concern to the United States. They had the pattern aptly drawn for them in 1918-19 when FIELD STUDY IN ALASKA At the request of Secretary of Agriculture Wallace, Associate Forester E. A. Sherman, of the forest service, left July 10 for a two-month trip through Alaska to make a field study of departmental problems. This will be Sherman's third inspection trip to the territory. Mr. Sherman will be joined at Juneau by C. A. Flory, district forester in charge of the 20,000,000 acres of national forests in Alaska. They will go from Juneau to Valdez and travel by automobile to Fairbanks, where they will inspect the agricultural experiment station located near that city, and also the one at Matunska. From Fairbanks they will travel over the new government railroad to Seward and thence by steamer to Cordova, the headquarters of the Chugach national forest. From there side trips will be made to the Prince William sound region and to Katalla. An inspection trip will also be made from Ketchikan over the Tongass national forest in southeastern Alaska. Mr. Sherman will make a special study of the program of road construction in the national forests of Alaska, for which congress has appropriated a million dollars; the possibilities of organized forest protection for the unreserved timberlands of interior Alaska, which have suffered severely from uncontrolled fires, and the relationship of the national forests to other general industrial development of the territory. MANY MOTORISTS COMING Motorists trekking across the continent toward the El Dorado of California are getting the shock of their lives when they find that the western end of the trans-continental routes is the worst of all. They had the pattern aptly drawn for them in 1918-19 when an American chief executive, presuming on a mandate from our people which he not only did not possess, but which in the congressional elections of 1918 had been explicitly denied him after he had earnestly appealed for it, went abroad and attempted to regulate the domestic affairs of foreign nations. And to encourage foreign interference in our domestic affairs the diplomats and foreign representatives guilty thereof have had no little encouragement from a group of internationalists still active in this country. "Foreigners are coming here and telling us how to run our country and how to conduct our government," declared Senator Watson, "and what laws we are to pay, and are interfering, I think, unjustly in our domestic affairs. I call attention to the singular fact that the men who tried to get us into the league of nations are the ones who are trying now to defeat this bill (the tariff)—free trade and internationalism react in opposition to it." Not only that, but there is evidence to show that foreigners are taking a hand in writing our school histories or having them prepared by writers of internationalistic tendencies, to the end that the youth of the land may look upon the achievements of the American nation as ordinary and the American leaders in war and statecraft as mediocre, even venal. This is all a part of the game to break down the spirit of nationalism. The criticism of Senator Watson will undoubtedly have considerable effect in arresting the attempt of foreign diplomats to take the key from our hands and open our ports to free trade. Shortly after the senator's speech it was announced that the British ambassador would leave the United States on an extended vacation. He no doubt hopes that the matter will have blown over ere his return, and that may be true so far, as he is concerned, provided there is no repetition. will undoubtedly have considerable effect in arresting the attempt of foreign diplomats to take the key from our hands and open our ports to free trade. Shortly after the senator's speech it was announced that the British ambassador would leave the United States on an extended vacation. He no doubt hopes that the matter will have blown over ere his return, and that may be true so far, as he is concerned, provided there is no repetition. But the ambassador from Italy, Signor Ricci, evinces little desire to observe diplomatic punctillo. He declares that "tariff duties are an international problem, and as such are a proper subject for discussion by a diplomatic agent of a foreign country." That may be true in a limited sense, but the proper place to discuss them is in the office of the secretary of state, and not on the stump or in public halls. If the Democratic party had one-half the patriotism that was possessed by that party 34 years ago, it would not encourage a foreign ambassador to side with it on a domestic issue. In 1888 Lord Sackville West, the British minister to the United States, went no farther than to advise a correspondent, supposedly of British origin, to vote for the re-election of Cleveland. On the fact becoming public, that doughty Democratic president peremptorily dismissed West as persona non grata. Sackville West wanted Cleveland reelected in order that free trade might be perpetuated and the British manufacturers might retain control of certain trade in the American market. Signor Ricci may well take heed from Sackville West's fate. No American representative in Italy would display the execrable taste of interfering with Italy's tariff law, which is itself highly protective. Still, those who "never say die," do. California portions of the National Old Trails highway and Midland Trail are sad enough to make a cat weep. It is reported that more than 40,000 auto parties will reach this part of the state over these two routes within the next twelve months, and yet not a hand is being lifted by California to make their trip pleasant. News is spreading through the east that the California boulevard system is worth travelling 3000 miles to see, and so practically every motorist touring out here thinks that his troubles are over as soon as he hits the state border. As a matter of fact, says the auto club, his troubles are only just beginning as he comes into California, and for a distance of 250 miles has nothing but rutty roads and dust to contend with until he comes through the Cajon pass and thus into the boulevard system built by the counties of central and southern California. That action must be taken at once by the state in improving the California termini of the trans-continental roads if long distance motor car travel to the west is to continue, is the suggestion of the automobile club through its officials.
