PROSTITUTING ORGANIZED LABOR TO PARTISANSHIP At the national convention of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers held at Houston, Texas, resolutions framed by the close organization of Democrats and Socialists in charge of the deliberations of the convention, were passed, declaring that "Warren G. Harding, president of the United States, has shown himself to be a consistent and unrelenting enemy of organized labor in particular and of the working classes in general" and committing the organization to opposition to President Harding's reelection. The editor of the official magazine was instructed to use the columns of the paper to attack President Harding and his administration. A resolution predicated upon falsehood thus culminated in an attempted prostitution of a labor organization to the partisan political ends sought by certain leaders of the organization, more anxious to play politics than to serve the cause of labor. The statement that President Harding has shown himself to be a "consistent and unrelenting enemy of organized labor" and of "the working classes in general" is so preposterously untrue that it falls of its own weight. As a newspaper publisher President Harding has been for years an employer of organized labor. He is an honorary member of the Typographical union. His fairness to and consideration of his employees has been clearly shown by the testimony of the men who have worked with and for him. Indeed, President Harding is himself as much a workingman as any of those who framed up and put over these resolutions. The hope of this country is in the same restrained, thoughtful voters and political leaders. The political dervish dancers, the shirkers and sowlers against business enterprise, the sowers of class hatred and prejudice, have been with us as a people for lo, these many years. The common sense of the American electorate always disposes of them. The people always learn that the man who will flatter them and lie to them in order to get their votes, will betray them for selfish considerations when given an opportunity to do so as a public official. A LITTLE WORD The breath of spring was in the air; My heart was light and free; Sweet flowers nodded everywhere, And, oh, so merrily. I trod the path I loved, For life was bright and gay— But some one spoke a bitter word And all the world seemed gray. Thick hung the heavy clouds o'er-head; My aching heart was sore; The nodding flowers were long since dead. As wearily once more, I trod the path to home; All life was dark as night— But some one spoke a loving word, And all the world seemed bright. —Irene Judy. Most of the fun in life seems to be in doing something you can't afford to is an honorary member of the Typographical union. His fairness to and consideration of his employees has been clearly shown by the testimony of the men who have worked with and for him. Indeed, President Harding is himself as much a workingman as any of those who framed up and put over these resolutions. The rank and file of the railway brotherhood membership is waking up to the fact that the Democrats and Socialists who have forced their way to the leadership of these organizations, have abandoned the original and legitimate aims of organized labor and are seeking to convert these unions into political blocs to be delivered at will be these leaders on election day. The leaders of the railway brotherhoods all Democrats or Socialists, are using the funrs collected by these organizations as dues for purposes of partisan political propaganda. Just now they are seeking to array against the Republican party and the Harding administration the rank and file of the railway men of the country, a large number of whom are Republicans and are having their money, collected for other purposes, taken from them for partisan propaganda. The selfish, ambitious leaders guilty of this perversion of unionism are running these organizations upon the rocks. They have declared war on a political party which at the last general election cast two-thirds of the votes. They have served notice on the country that membership in one of these organizations must carry with it affiliation with either the Socialist or Democratic parties. This betrayal of unionism will soon react upon the heads of those guilty of it. It will be resented by hundreds of thousands of union men who decline to be considered dumb driven cattle under the lash of autocratic machine bosses. It will arouse the criticism and the opposition of millions of people who do not follow these professed proprietors of the labor vote in their hatred of Republicanism. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS RULED "The Committee of Forty Eigat," which lacks only nine of exhibiting fifty-seven varieties of "nuts," has issued a statement interpreting recent political events, in which the claim is made that "the people are for the first time awakening to their responsibilities" and are "throwing off the chains of a political and industrial slavery." THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS RULED "The Committee of Forty Elgat," which lacks only nine of exhibiting fifty-seven varieties of "nuts," has issued a statement interpreting recent political events, in which the claim is made that "the people are for the first time awakening to their responsibilities" and are "throwing off the chains of a political and industrial slavery." Talk of this kind has been the chief stock in trade of socialists and revolutionaries in general for a long time. The assumption of a certain kind of "reformer" is that the people of this country have from the beginning of our government been a collection of imbeciles and weaklings herded about by bosses and machines, without the slightest capacity to assert themselves in primaries and elections. This talk is, of course, just plain dunk." There has never been a time in our history when the people of any portion of the country not controlled by the southern Democratic party with all its schemes of fraud and disfranchisement, could not dominate primaries and elections. It has not taken the rise of latter day demagogues and political confidence men to show them the way to emancipation. The American government has been within the control of the American people from the very earliest days of the republic. The administration now in power was put there by the votes of about two-thirds of all the people in this country. The lunatic fringers of politics were yelling during the last national campaign that the down-trodden people hadn't look-in on their government, and the overwhelming decision of the American people in November, 1920, didn't teach them anything. The people rule in this country. ANAHEIM GAZETTE MONEY TO LOAN $20,000 to loan on Anaheim ranches and business blocks. Casey & Holcomb, 107 West Third Street, Santa Ana.
