COUNTY CLERK BACKS IS MAKING GOOD Will Sweep the County at the Primary Election, August 29 Pointing to a record for efficiency, hard work and uniform courtesy in dealing with the public, friends of County Clerk J. M. Backs feel certain that the voters of the county will re-elect him with the same overwhelming vote given him four years ago. At that time Backs ran as a deputy after six years' experience in the clerk's office as deputy under W. B. Williams and N. T. Edwards. The confidence expressed in him by the voters of the county at that time has been amply justified by Backs' record, it is pointed out. Since he has made good, it is declared, he should be returned in exactly the same way that any employer would retain an experienced and thoroughly capable employee. The work of a county clerk requires training. It is work that is not learned in a day. The intricacies of legal procedure in handling elections, court cases, the proceedings of the board of supervisors, bond issues, county contracts, naturalization matters, federal passports, all require adaptability and special training. Those who have observed Backs in the administration of his office agree that he has both. He was born in this county and has lived here all his life, and by all who know him he is known as a man of integrity.—Register. SUPERVISORS' PROCEEDINGS At the last meeting of the board of supervisors the following business was transacted: Maps of tracts Nos. 311 and 312 were received by the board and referred to the city engineer of Huntington Beach. County auditor was authorized to No he didn't get fired, He simply retired, For refusing to do what was wrong; Now in my estimation, A congratulation, Will boost this good cause along. They did not understand, When selecting a man, To let the bootlegger off lightly; For the man they selected, They wished they'd rejected, For he fined each bootlegger politely. Now this man has a mind, An exceptional kind, A mind of his own as to what's right; His superiors frowned, But he would not lay down, He just called them all down real polite. Now here is a man, On which you can plan, To go into the thick of the fight; He will stay to the end, To protect a good friend, But he must know that his friend's in the right. Now I just wish to say, Before I close for the day, We should all rise up with a shout; Just give Charley a chance, To wear Anaheim's pants, And he'll straighten everything out. —By E. C. H. QUESTION FORD'S OFFER The action of certain members of congress branding Henry Ford's Muscle Shoals offer as a "fraud" and "an attempt to rob the government" is not at all surprising. Ford's offer really is an impudent request for the government to turn over to him an immensely valuable property and then insure him against loss in his operation of it. Lots of thin women also are determined to reduce—the contents of the family pocketbook. Governor William D. IN ANNOUNCING HIS CANDIDACY SAYS: More vital to the state or the nation than the personal aspirations of any man, is the maintenance of a system of government consonant with the ideals and interests of the people. HITS REACTIONARIES Realizing that, because of reactionary activities, a change of administration at this time would mean a complete change in the character of government that this state has endorsed and ratified on many occasions. I hereby submit my candidacy for re-election as governor of the State of California. The greatest good to the greatest number, the maintenance of law and order, and the progressive development of the human and material interests of the state have been the guiding principles of my administration of the state's affairs, and of the legislation that I have approved. This has been evidenced in our agricultural progress, in our educational expansion, in our extension of child welfare work, in our anti-alien legislation, in our highway development, in our soldier welfare program, in our legislative support of national constitutional prohibition, in our equalization of taxes to the end that public service corporations should pay their just proportion in harmony with the demands of our state constitution, in our increased efficiency and through administration reorganization and consolidation, and in other measures, upon which I am prepared to stand, as an evidence of good faith and a guarantee of the continuation of progressive policies in this state. POINTS TO EXPENSES Notwithstanding the greatest increase in the cost of living that the nation has ever experienced, our state expenditures have been held to a strictly conservative basis in all our northerly only in the educational and constructive marked increase, and the larger part of it by the direct vote of the people, whose much money shall be used and for what even including these expanding activitiesernment has increased its expenses less big business within the state, and this investments which are vital to our future economy. In California after the war, reactionary the legislature and to weaken the administrative movement, which was as dangerous and democratic government of our people was ever exercised in the history of the tling against these forces the people were GAUNTLET THROWN I am fully aware that these selfish intents galautlet in the coming election, and I for the maintenance of government for this The state's future is bright with promising and the safety of our institutions de are combined a courage to meet reacting standing of economic conditions, a caution expenditures, a practical sympathy for the and a constructive policy of state develop To meet these demands I pledge my best A Great and Progressive Governor of a Great and Progressive DUO wrong; along. tly; duced, the subject of his paper being, "Spraying versus Fumigation for Scale Control." Mr. Prizer opened his remarks by a flat declaration that there was no comparison between spraying and fumigation results, and that spraying would soon be practically done away with for pest control. He divided the insects the grower must contend with into two great classes, those with biting mouths and those known as suckers. He then pointed out that the best way to combat a biting insect was by some poisonous substance. TOURING CONDITIONS THROUGHOUT WORLD So many auto owners are planning to motor in foreign countries next year, that the Automobile Club of Southern California has prepared a bulletin of national interest showing touring conditions in some of the out-of-the-way foreign lands. This bulletin, just issued by the touring bureau of the club, which is the largest organization in the world, shows conditions abroad as follows: with the Saturday before the Fourth. The officials, however, say they are reconciled to their loss, because it makes good advertising. They believe that rain insurance will become the usual thing hereafter for entertainments and profit-making undertakings of all kinds that depend on the weather for their success. And perhaps they are right. Last summer a city that embarked on a public exposition saved itself from serious loss in this same way. Private institutions are learning the usefulness of this de- "Spraying versus Fumigation for Scale Control." Mr. Prizer opened his remarks by a flat declaration that there was no comparison between spraying and fumigation results, and that spraying would soon be practically done away with for pest control. He divided the insects the grower must contend with into two great classes, those with biting mouths and those known as suckers. He then pointed out that the best way to combat a biting insect was by some poison it would take. Basing his statements upon fifteen years of investigation, the last speaker of the morning session, R. S. Woglum, the entomologist of the field department of the California Fruit Growers' exchange, predicted a short crop this year in the citrus belt because of the fact that so many ranch owners are favoring the cutting down of operating expenses, the cost of fumigating being classed as one of these. "It is policy and economy to fumigate," said Woglum. He further stated that liquid gas seems to be the better method in experimental work. "The main objection to the liquid gas method is that it is not up to standard in cold weather because of condensation," said Mr. Woglum. "To get away from this difficulty there has been recently perfected a nozzle gas will vaporize the gas and at the same time heat it to the proper temperature so that it will penetrate the tree from lower trunk to upper branches. This method will prove to be the most thoroughly practiced, of all, and I think that it will cause the general adoption of liquid gas fumigation as soon as it is perfected." LUCKY FRIDAY Who said Friday was unlucky. Washington was born on Friday, Shakespeare was born on Friday. America was discovered on Friday. Richmond was evacuated on Friday. The Mayflower pilgrims landed on Friday. The battle of Bunker Hill was fought on Friday. The battle of New Orleans was fought on Friday. The battle of Waterloo on Friday, and the Declaration of Independence was signed Friday. Yes, and Robinson Crusoe had a man named Friday. THROUGHOUT WORLD So many auto owners are planning to motor in foreign countries next year, that the Automobile Club of Southern California has prepared a bulletin of national interest showing touring conditions in some of the out-of-the-way foreign lands. This bulletin, just issued by the touring bureau of the club, which is the largest organization in the world, shows conditions abroad as follows: Australia—Reasonable conveniences exist here for motor travel. You drive on the left, and pass vehicles on the right. Brazil—It is necessary to obtain as many licenses to drive an auto as there are cities. Belgium—Roads here are paved with cobles, except in the departments of Liege, Namur and Ardennes. Many of the interesting old cities of Belgium cannot be reached except over-cobble roads. Visit the valley of the River Meuse. Egypt—Good roads as known in America do not exist in Egypt except in the vicinity of the larger towns. A new road has just been built between Cairo and Alexandria, however, according to late reports received by the auto club. Owing to the absence of roads and the difficulty in obtaining gasoline it is not advisable to take an auto to Egypt now. Cars may be hired there. India—Most of the roads are made of "kunker" and are well maintained. The grand trunk highway extends from Peshawar to Calcutta, and all the roads of southern India are generally good. North of Delhi the roads are also good. Bridges are noticeable by their absence over the big rivers. Another bulletin is to be issued by the auto club at an early date giving information on Italy, England, France, Jamaica, Japan and Malta. RAIN INSURANCE NEXT It is said that four companies which have been specializing in "rain insurance" for a year or two were hard hit on the Fourth of July, and paid out more than $500,000 in rain premiums for the four-day period beginning... EDWARD B. MERRITT CANDIDATE FOR AUDITOR Of Orange County Primary Election, Tuesday, August 29, 1922 D. Stephens ADVOCY SAYS: A conservative basis in all our normal administrative functions, educational and constructive activities has there been any change, and the larger part of this advance was necessitated note of the people, whose right it is to determine how will be used and for what purpose. During these expanding activities, California's state govner increased its expenses less proportionately than any other state within the state, and this increase has gone into development vital to our future economic and business welfare. After the war, reactionary interests sought to control and to weaken the administration, but a subtle and orrent, which was as dangerous to the economic welfare of government of our people as any corporate control that used in the history of the state, but fortunately in battense forces the people were victorious. GAUNTLET THROWN DOWN We are aware that these selfish interests have thrown down the re coming election, and I feel called upon to fight again in defence of government for the people by the people. Future is bright with promise. The rapidity of our prosafety of our institutions demand a government in which a courage to meet reactionary propaganda, and undereconomic conditions, a cautious attitude toward increasing practical sympathy for the human welfare of our people active policy of state development.
