Old-Timer Comments on the Magic Growth of County.
Aladdin rubbed his magic lamp and changed Orange county from a wilderness into a prosperous, thriving, wonderful section.
Thus did James Brown, 89, express his sentiments regarding the difference in these parts since he was last here as a barefoot boy, riding behind an ox team nearly seventy years ago.
Brown is visiting with his son, Geo. D. Brown, Costa Mesa rancher. His home now is at Rockford, Illinois.
"It is wonderful, wonderful," Brown said as he discussed the change brought about by the span in years. "Seventy years is a long period of time, but the development far outstrips it.
"When I first came to California it was in 1851. I came out with my father with an ox team. We drove into what is now Orange county. It was a long tedious journey. There was nothing here then but the mission station at San Juan Capistrano. I distinctly remember my trip there.
"On our way west from Illinois we suffered many hardships. Our caravan was attacked by the Indians."
ange were entertained at Hewes park by President Huff with a real camp feed, having hot cakes, maple syrup and all of the trimmings. Nearly forty Scouts of Orange were present at the party. The Olinda troop was entertained at a weiner bake given by the mothers of the Scouts at Carbon canyon. Both of these parties ended with a number of good lively scout games.
A number of scouts have already gone camping for the summer with their parents to different parts of the mountains, and all of the rest of the scouts of the county are looking forward with eager anticipation to the final announcement of the big council summer camp, and judging from the sites which the committee has been looking at, the boys are dreaming of big pine trees, mountain streams and all of those things which really makes summer camp worth while. Fullerton troop No. 1, which has a wonderful cabin in the mountains, built by themselves, are planning this summer to utilize the energy of Forscee creek by putting in a water wheel and dynamo to generate electricity for their camp, both for electric lights and power.
Three sessions of the Court of Honor are scheduled for this week, at different points in the county. Thursday evening the Court of Honor for Miss Crump's is actions. The other Mary McIntyre, of Trude Brasher, of Alexander Payse, Payse and the three taken into custody charged the former liquor and the grunk. They were hours, two of which county jail. "On our way west from Illinois we suffered many hardships. Our caravan was attacked by the Indians. A little 6-year-old lad was stolen by the red skins, as we called them.
"For ten years he lived the life of an Indian. He retained his knowledge of the English language. Several times he attempted to escape but failed.
"When he was 16, however, he was out hunting with one of the tribe. They were not far from an English camp and he realized it was his best chance to get his freedom and return to those he loved. He managed to get behind the man with him, despite the fact that they always watched him carefully. Then he shot. Several days late he returned to our town."
Brown returned to Illinois in 1852 and came to California again in 1861 behind a team of mules.

DAMAGE SUIT MAY BE SETTLED PEACABLY
With the announcement that the first of the Samuel Hasley damage suits, involving the former acting marshal of Brea as defendant in claims aggregating $30,000, did not come to trial Monday as scheduled, it was reported that a settlement out of court was being negotiated.
Miss Bertha Crump, 24, of Santa Ana, is plaintiff in the suit which was to have been tried in Superior Judge Z. B. West's court. She seeks judgment against Hasley for $7500, asking $5000 actual and $2500 exemplary damages for her arrest by some months ago.

Miss Crump’s is one of four such actions. The other plaintiffs are Miss Mary Mcintyre, of Orange, Miss Gertrude Brasher, of San Francisco, and Alexander Payse, of Anaheim.
Payse and the three girls were all taken into custody by Hasley, who charged the former with transporting liquor and the girls with being drunk. They were held in custody six hours, two of which were spent in the county jail. Later the charges against them were dismissed as being without foundation, when they appeared before the Brea city recorder.
The four complaints are identical. Each alleges false arrest. Each asks the same amount as damages.
Attorney Arthur E. Koepsel, of San In Ana, represents the plaintiffs. Hasley is defended by Attorney Marks and Launer, of Fullerton. His defense was briefly, that his arrest of the party was not made without probable cause. He asserted that Payse was actually transporting liquor at the time and that the girls were talking loudly, laughing loudly and hilariously and by their conduct justifying his alleged belief that they were drunk.

CURE FOR HOOKWORM?
Can hookworm, the "laziness disease," be cured by carbon tetrachloride? It seems so, according to evidence from Ceylon and the Fiji islands, where thousands of hookworm cases have been treated with success in nearly all cases.
Research work along this line was started by the discoveries of an American—Dr. Maurice C. Hall, of the department of agriculture.
Part of the honor goes to a condemned criminal in the Bogambra prison at Kandy, Ceylon, who was the first volunteer as a subject for experiments. A portmortem after his execution showed that the hookworm cure in this case was complete.
