Work of excavating for the new city hall began this week and the contractors, Wilson & Bever, expect to rush the job. The hundred thousand strangers coming to Anaheim this week will find the streets pretty well cluttered up, owing to the many new buildings that are going up.

BREAD LOGIC
BREAD LOGIC
Two things are necessary in the making of good bread—first grade materials and scientific baking. Hundreds of people in Anaheim like Dresser's Bread simply because it is a delicious tasting bread. They don't realize what is necessary in the way of cost, care and labor to produce bread that is always good.
Dresser's Bread has set a standard of goodness because it is better bread. It is made from the best materials and given the baking that makes people call it delicious.
Ask your grocer for Dresser's Bread.

Mrs. A. G. McKey and two sons, A. Grant, Jr., and H. Boyd, motored over to Long Beach last Friday and spent the day visiting her brother, H. B. Paxton.

Since the Fairyland was closed on account of the fire, the Grand theatre has been opened in the evening, and Eastsiders are rejoicing. September 1st, it is announced, the Grand will pass into new hands, and will be open every night.
Rev. A. B. Markle, speaking of Decoration Day, recalled Tuesday that it was the fifty-seventh anniversary of the day he marched down Pennsylvania avenue with the victorious northern army in the grand review. Comrade Markle is not as young as he was on that day, but he is still able to do considerable marching.
Henry T. Gohlman, of this city, was one of the men who graduated at California university last week. He took a full course and received the degree of A. B. Next year he will return to the university as an instructor, and after serving one term will qualify as eligible for the position of superintendent or principal of schools. He expects to make that his vocation.
People who buy and sell real estate frequently get stung. Fifteen years ago Adolf Stankey purchased the small residence on Lemon street, where he has since lived, paying Mrs. Langenberger $4000 for it. Everybody told Adolf he was stung, as the property was not worth the money. It had a frontage of 91 feet, and nine feet was eventually sliced off for an alley. The other day Adolf sold the balance Judge Charles Kuechel is making himself a terror to evil-doers, especially to violators of the traffic ordinance. He has collected almost four hundred dollars from speedsters since the first of the month and declares if small fines will not put a stop to the recklessness he will go the limit. A member of the police force, speaking of the matter, remarked yesterday: "There is some satisfaction in arresting one of the auto maniacs now, because if he is guilty we know he must pay the penalty. Judge Kuechel is no respecter of persons, and is not swayed by the violator's age, sex, position, religion, politics, color or previous or present condition. If a person is guilty he or she must pay the penalty. We are going to make Anaheim an unpopular place in which to violate the traffic laws."
Knocked unconscious and seriously injured when he tried to leap onto the Fullerton fire truck as it passed at a high speed on the way to a fire on East Commonwealth avenue about 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, Joe Cleaver, a volunteer fireman, narrowly escaped death beneath the wheels of the speeding machine. The truck was stopped and-the firemen went to the aid of the injured comrade. When it was found that he was not killed, Cleaver was taken to a doctor's office in a passing car and truck went on to the fire. Cleaver is thought to have leaped for the side step of the truck as it was passing, and to have misjudged the speed and distance as he missed and was thrown to the pavement on his back. One of the rear wheels of the truck struck his shoulder, injuring it severely.

Everybody told Adolf he was stung, as the property was not worth the money. It had a frontage of 91 feet, and nine feet was eventually sliced off for an alley. The other day Adolf sold the balance for $25,000 cash, and now his friends are telling him that he is stung again, as it is worth $30,000. The purchaser, Mr. Breen, expects to move the cottage off and erect a business block on the site.
Falkenstein's store captured the prize for the best decorated window in town. It is a beautiful window, and shows the handiwork of an artist. Many of the stores have artistic displays, but one of the most unique windows is that of Eygabroad & Fisher, in their new office on West Center. One of the features of this window is a card bearing two photographs of a young lady. The first is her picture on the day of her arrival here from Indiana—presumably from Hoop Pole township, Posey county—and the other was taken six months later, and shows the remarkable improvement in her appearance, due entirely to Anaheim climate and environment.
Billy Knott attended a meeting of the Elks' baseball team managers at Los Angeles last week. The southern section of the three-branch state league was organized with twelve teams on the list. Among the cities having teams in the league besides Anaheim are Santa Barbara, Pasadena, Bakersfield, Riverside, San Diego and Santa Monica, with five others. Billy states the entire league is combined against Anaheim, champions of the league twice, and champions of the state last year, and the boys are going to have a hard struggle keeping at the top of standing score this year. The opening game will be played in this city June 18.
Falling over a 100-foot cliff of the Carbon canyon at 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, near Brea, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Bryan, of Olinda, both past 60 years of age, miraculously escaped instant death when their car swerved and bounded, top first, into the depths as it was passing, and to have misjudged the speed and distance as he missed and was thrown to the pavement on his back. One of the rear wheels of the truck struck his shoulder, injuring it severely.
Tex Choate, formerly an Anaheim policeman, but now a member of the Huntington Beach force, found himself confronted by an angry woman with a revolver Saturday morning, and promptly stuck up his hands when ordered to do so. The woman, Mrs. Sadie Edington, runs a rooming house at the beach town. Early Saturday morning neighbors phoned to police headquarters stating that a row was in progress at the place. Choate went down to investigate and on stepping into the house found the woman and gun waiting for him. After Tex had elevated his hands the woman turned, ran into an adjoining room and fired two shots at John Truax, a roomer, wounding him in the arm and side. Jealousy was the cause. She was placed under arrest and taken to Santa Ana.

Falling over a 100-foot cliff of the Carbon canyon at 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, near Brea, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Bryan, of Olinda, both past 60 years of age, miraculously escaped instant death when their car swerved and bounded, top first, into the depths below. In the case of both, internal injuries are feared and they were until a late hour Monday lying in a semi-conscious condition in the Fullerton hospital. Both of the parties were pinned beneath the car and their frantic calls for help attracted the attention of H. W. Baxter, 411 Bush street, Santa Ana, a passing motorist, who climbed down the perilous precipice and took them to the hospital.
D. J. Bastanchury and members of the La Habra Chamber of Commerce are continuing with unabated energy to prepare for the first annual Southern California Livestock Breeders' convention to be held in La Habra, May 27, when they will be hosts to livestock men from all parts of the southland. Through the efforts of Assistant Farm Advisor Floyd Scott and Orange county breeders, La Habra was chosen as the place of convention, and the La Habra townsfolk are preparing for the rousing welcome which they will extend at the Incheon on the convention day.
