Peter Weisel departed on Monday for Milwaukee to remain for a month or two on a business visit.
Gov. Budd signed the county government bill on Thursday and its provisions are now law. The new bill effects a saving of between $4000 and $5000 annually in the salaries paid to county officers and their deputies in this county, the reduction taking effect at the termination of the present term of office, in January, 1899. Gov. Budd vetoed the bill appropriating money for the district fairs in which had been included an appropriation of $2000 for the fair at Santa Ana. There will probably be in consequence no races at the Santa Ana track this fall.

Mr. Calisher finds that the cheap cash principle works well. He is enabled to sell goods cheaper than others by buying and selling for cash.
The New York mammoth circus came promptly to time last Tuesday. The weather unfortunately was so windy and dusty that rather a slim house, for Anaheim, greeted the performers. The company has added many new features to its programme since its last visit, the most interesting of which is Horatio Nelson's musical machine, a curiosity in its way, and similar to a piano in sound. The performance with cannon balls and 160-pound dumb bell I sa wonderful exhibition of human strength. The company is now performing at Los Angeles.
We are informed that Wm. Fithian, who lives about three miles north of town, met with a singular accident lately. Two cats fighting, fell into his well. He got one of them out and was in the well dipping the water out when the other cat almost drowned and in a dying condition crawled up to him and seized his leg with her teeth, biting clear through and holding on with a death grip that Mr. Fithian could only with the greatest difficulty release. The leg swelled and showed alarming symptoms at first, but is now getting better.

Francis G. Ryan and Mrs. Matilda Ryan were married in Los Angeles on Monday. It is no perfunctory statement when we say we join the many friends of the happy couple in extending them the felicitations of the season.
Mrs. Geo. W. Ford, of Santa Ana, entertained a number of friends at her home on Friday evening. Among those present we note the names of Mrs. Konig, Miss Eichler and Miss Flora Davis, of Anaheim.
Madame Modjeska and Count Bozena departed on Monday for their home at Arden, in the Santiago canyon, where they will enjoy an outing of several weeks.
Fred Nelzow and Frank Dyer will in time form a co-partnership in the barber business. Mr. Dyer at present is in the employ of Mr. Netzow, but it is his intention later on to become a member of the firm. Both are enterprising young men and will doubtless receive a liberal share of the public patronage.
The Saving, Loan and Building association held its annual election for directors at its office Saturday evening. The following gentlemen were elected to serve for the ensuing year: J. P. Zeyn, J. Phil Davis and Charlie Federman are positive that they saw the flying machine Sunday night about 9 o’clock. The ship was bedecked with varigated lights of unusual brilliancy and was a sight to behold as it moved southward. As both gentlemen are of temperate habits there is no disposition to doubt their word and in all probability the aerial wonder is a thing of fact and not of fiction.

The telegraph brings the sad news of the death of one of the most distinguished men of modern times, of a man to whom America owes much of her greatness and civilization is indebted for a large share of its progress in the nineteenth century. Professor Samuel F. B. Morse died in the city of New York on the 3rd or 4th inst. (the date is not given) and was buried yesterday. He was near 82 years old and lived to see his wonderful inventions fully appreciated and used by all the world. The telegraph office has been placed in mourning.
Robert N. White has retired from the agency of the Anaheim Lighter company and is succeeded by Capt. Chas. Wolff. Mr. White has many warm friends during his sojourn here who will regret his departure. Capt. Wolff lately commanded the schooner Wm. H. Meyer, bringing him to Anaheim Landing. We have not the pleasure of a personal acquaintance with him, but feel assured that he possesses the qualities of a gentleman and thorough-going business man to have been honored by the company with this very responsible position.
Langenberger & Co. have entirely refitted the interior of their store since closing out their dry goods department. The house now deals only in groceries and hardware and have arranged everything in the neatest and most attractive manner with a view to these branches.

A committee appointed by the Fraternal Aid held a meeting Tuesday evening and perfected arrangements for the ball to be given by that organization on the 20th inst., which promises to be a social event of the season. Following are the committees: Reception committee—Mrs. F. Mickle, Mrs. M. Nebelung, Mrs. C. Spencer, R. Metrose, H. Cahen; floor committee—Mrs. Clara Bittner, T. S. Grimshaw, Chas. Norman, Alfred Seale.
Deputy Sheriff Jack Landell was married at San Juan Tuesday to Miss Solidad Pryor, who belongs to one of the oldest Hispano-American families of southern California. After the wedding an old fashioned barbecue was spread for the enjoyment of the large number of guests who were present from all parts of this county and Los Angeles.
Allan Melrose started in the bicycle race at Santa Ana on Saturday, but failed to make a good showing. Allan was the thirteenth starter, and true to the unlucky number, met with a bad accident on the course. As he was about to cross the railroad he fell, injuring his hip and it was some little time before he could start again. He is anxious for another "go" with the Santa Ana cyclists.
