OIL FIELD NOTES
Declaring that by drilling its test well at Garden Grove the Standard Oil company has saved to individuals and small companies hundreds of thousands of dollars that would otherwise have been spent, Ellwood J. Munger, oil news expert of Brea in his weekly report stated that the Standard is about at the limit set for the test well in question.
Drilling is now close to 5500 feet, Munger said. The original intention was to carry this wildcat to 5500. To date little or no showings that would indicate oil have been found. Garden Grove is indebted to the Standard Oil company for drilling the test well and testing the possibilities of the field.
Munger's report, as it concerns the Huntington Beach field, follows, in part:
"The Amalgamated Oil company has just emptied a well in the so-called lower zone at Huntington Beach. Fowler No. 2, finished at 3903 feet, came in a 150 barrel well. The Amalgamated well proves again the mistake that is being made in drilling wells so close together at Huntington Beach. Town lot drilling and the placing of wells on holdings less than three acres is not proving profitable.
"The Argonaut Oil company, with a 600-barrel well on the Turley property, is getting up higher in the Huntington Beach production list. Turley No. 2 was completed at 3500 feet and starts off like a good producer."
"Huntington Beach's record high gravity well now belongs to the Petroleum Midway, Vollmer-Meyer No. 1, recently completed at 3450, is making oil testing 28.3 gravity. The next well in the field is the Standard Oil com-
"The Argonaut Oil company, with a 600-barrel well on the Turley property, is getting up higher in the Huntington Beach production list. Turley No. 2 was completed at 3500 feet and starts off like a good producer.
"Huntington Beach's record high gravity well now belongs to the Petroleum Midway, Vollmer-Meyer No. 1, recently completed at 3450, is making oil testing 28.3 gravity. The next well in the field is the Standard Oil company's B-2, producing 28.2 gravity oil at 4250 feet. The Petroleum Midway well is flowing by heads and making 200 barrels. The Standard well is making about 450 barrels.
"The McKeon Drilling company has taken on an extensive drilling program that includes wells at both Huntington Beach and Signal Hill.
"E. J. Miley's Pacific Petroleum corporation continues to push out at Huntington Beach. In addition to the properties and holdings of the Petfells syndicate, recently taken over, the Miley corporation has closed a deal for the Fidelity property and holdings.
"The Rhoades Oil company got what it was looking for in the deepening of Noo. 1. At 2745 a nice sand having a close resemblance to the famous Bolsa sand was struck.
"There is reason to believe that the Standard Oil company will develop a good producer on the Thompson property. Drilling at 3500 feet, the formation shows a nice brown shale and carries considerable oil.
"The Union Oil company has Newlands No. 2 ready to go on production."
Other oil field information follows:
"The Standard Oil company is not drilling a well at Talbert, as reported a few days ago. The Talbert well is a community lease at Huntington Beach. The announcement of Talbert community was taken that the well was to be located at Talbert, several miles east of Huntington Beach. There is little chance of a well being drilled at Talbert after the failure of the Westminster well to find oil.
"In the Richfield district, the Clark Oil company is making strong efforts to get a producer out of its deep test well on the Wetzel property. Drilled to 4647, the well has been on the pump ten days now and has not made any oil to speak of.
"The Chanslor-Canfield Midway's Bradford No. 2, drilling at 4460, is showing a little gas, the only encounter profitable."
Difficulty has been encountered in securing rights of way in the vicinity of Anaheim Landing and in crossing the Stanton property. Mr. Darlington explained, and stated that the county is now empowered to take proceedings to secure the needed rights of way, so that this feature is not considered a great obstacle.
The coast road from Huntington Beach to Newport is planned to run parallel to the Southern Pacific and Pacific Electric tracks to a point opposite the dam at Bitter Point. From there the road will cut across to the cliffs and run under the bluff to a point near the old landing at the Orange County Country club, where it is planned to install a drawbridge to cross the bay.
Following the reading of the report, D. Eyman Huff moved that it be received, accepted and placed on file and that the supervisors of Orange county be notified of the action of the meeting.
Other reports included a brief word on Boy Scout activities in the county by D. Eyman Huff. Mr. Huff stated that the present campaign for funds had been a success. Only a small amount remains to be raised in two communities. Plans for organization of many new troops in the county are expected to be made possible through the employment of an assistant scout executive.
E. B. Kemp, of Anaheim, announced the dates for the California Valencia orange show to be held on May 23 to 30. The show will be bigger and better in every way this year, according to Mr. Kemp. The present plans are to hold the show in the new park at Anaheim and bigger tents, arrangements and displays are planned then in former years.
The past month had been the poorest in point of harbor development since active work was started was the report of Lew H. Wallace, of the harbor committee. Much future improvement and plans for extensive work to be accomplished were mentioned by Mr. Wallace hogger to show that
The committee is taking T. E. Stephenson R. E. Dye as secretary.
It was the consent of members of the drive be established west of the entrance park in Santiago canada was asked for an 80 which will give an on each side of the paved. No planting after the paving is Scouts are to be as ties as soon as poss will call for trips gather numerous plants.
The suggestion to huge boulders be placed with a dedicatory plot of them, was discussed.
Definite plans for the drive are to be submitted. On that committee Northcross, chairman and R. E. Dye. The "tie in" the project Scouts, giving the opportunity to contribute to the memorial.
HOME DEMONSTRATION
Women identified farm centers in Orlando taking an active involvement demonstration agency Floyd Scott, assistants.
Five or six farm have asked the farm outline work to include said, with a view toance county a home agent.
Although many ready suggested, we help of the agriculture vice, have a direct benefit of farm homes Scott, "there are still which need more attention and the support reau as well.
Preliminary steps to adopt a plan of w though a county hom agent cannot be added."
In the Richfield district, the Clark Oil company is making strong efforts to get a producer out of its deep test well on the Wetzel property. Drilled to 4647, the well has been on the pump ten days now and has not made any oil to speak of.
"The Chanslor-Canfield Midway's Bradford No. 2, drilling at 4460, is showing a little gas, the only encouragement the well has had."
"The Standard Oil company's deep well, Kellogg No. 2, now at 4765, is drilling in sand, but showing very little oil. Aside from the Kraemer lease the Standard has had very little success with deep wells at Richfield."
"Santa Fe Springs can still be said to be wildcat field. Some fifty wells are drilling and yet none of these have located the sands that made Bell No. 1 famous."
"The extreme south side of Signal Hill is being questioned by operators for production. It is the general opinion now that if oil is found in commercial quantity it will be necessary to go deep to get it."
"Tom O'Donnel and associates have completed arrangements for extensive development work on Signal Hill."
"The heavy showing of gas at 1294 in the Marine Oil Producing company's first well on the Hill is attracting attention. The gas showing is the strongest and heaviest for the depth of any well in the field."
"The Seal Beach Oil company has spudded in and actual drilling is now under way. Some 200 feet of hole will be made with cable tools, the conductor set, and then the rotary will be installed. Henry R. Dahney has a rig up and is doing some rigging up work. The two wells will prove a considerable part of Seal Beach for a field."

clothing store, where it was cashed. When the check proved to be worthless the loss fell upon Doty.
Mozley contended that the circumstances of the cheek cashing were not relevant as the intent of Johnson to defraud was the only pertinent question. The court upheld this view.
The offense charged against Johnson was alleged to have been committed in January, 1921. He was arrested at San Bernardino nearly six months ago, but protracted delay was encountered in bringing him to trial. Attorney A. E. Koepsel was appointed to defend him.
Johnson's wife and two small children reside at San Bernardino. In a letter said to have been received by the authorities since Johnson's arrest, his wife was said to have declared herself "through" with him.
PLANNING MEMORIAL DRIVE
Preliminary plans for planting a memorial drive, as a lasting testimonial to the glory of Orange county men and women who died in their country's service during the world war, are being made following the organization of the Memorial Drive committee.
Members of the committee are, Willard Smith, Villa Park; Walter Vandermast, Santa Ana; and George Sloop. Anaheim, appointed by the county council of the Boy Scouts; Supervisor N. T. Edwards, Orange; Robert C. Northcross and T. E. Stephenson, Santa Ana; appointed by the board of supervisors. D. Eyman Huff, El Modena, president, and R. E. Dye, Santa Ana, scout executive, and William McKay, Santa Ana scoutmaster, of the county boy Scout organization, attended the meeting.
The committee organized by electing T. E. Stephenson as chairman, and R. E. Dye as secretary.
as to whether or not oil or gas could reasonably occur there.
Information of this character, relative to northern and central California in particular, is available no where else, either in government or private documents.
Much study has been given the "proven fields" and the territory adjacent thereto, in the past, but the pioneer who wished to blaze a trail away from the beaten track of olddom, has had no guide.
The increasing demand for petroleum and its products during recent years has resulted in widespread prospecting for new fields.
In California wild cat wells are being drilled from the Oregon line to the Mexican boundary, some of them in places where even a cursory inspection of the geology would tell of the futility of looking for oil. Therefore, the report mentioned aims to point out the unfavorable as well as the favorable areas for the development of additional petroleum resources here.
The bulletin is cloth bond, contains 188 pages of text, twelve illustrative drawings, six photographs and six maps and sells for $1.25. Copies may be obtained by sending that amount to the state mining bureau, Ferry building, San Francisco, or to the bureau's branch offices at Pacific Finance building, Los Angeles; Santa Paula, Santa Maria, Bakersfield, Taft, Coalinga, Auburn or Redding.

breeds, production, the exhibition of birds for exhibition, the advantages of early hatching, the improvement resulting from the use of a high quality sire, capons and caponizing, culling the farm flock, and the pedigree breeding of poultry.
A number of department representatives took part in the program of the show and gave information to the visitors concerning the educational exhibit. They reported an extraordinary interest on the part of the public and various poultry breeds in the Lomona breed, many persons desiring to obtain breeding birds. The department believes it necessary to perfect them still more as regards certain characteristics, and it is not likely that any will be for sale during the coming year.
Men do not amount to much in lots of ways, but they seldom think it is necessary to display their chests, backs and calves. They take it for granted that everybody knows they have them.

HOME DEMONSTRATIONS
Women identified with the various farm centers in Orange county are taking an active interest in the home demonstration agencies, according to Floyd Scott, assistant farm advisor.
Five or six farm center committees have asked the farm bureau to help outline work to include women, Scott said, with a view to securing for Orance county a home demonstration agent.
"Although many of the projects already suggested, which include the help of the agricultural extension service, have a direct bearing on the imment of farm home conditions," said Scott, "there are still special problems which need more careful consideration and the support of the farm bureau as well."
"Preliminary steps have been taken to adopt a plan of work for 1922, even though a county home demonstration agent cannot be added to the county.
WATERMELONS AND SEEDS USED FOR MANY PURPOSES
In its studies of the control of watermelon diseases the United States department of agriculture has found that there are numerous uses for watermelons outside of their consumption as a popular fruit. Housewives have long been familiar with pickles and preserves made from watermelon rind. In China and other oriental countries watermelon seed is used as a table delicacy. Seedsmen in this country not only ship seed for this purpose, but also find a market for their product in the Chinese districts of New York and San Francisco. This liking for the seed is evidently not restricted to the orient, for some years ago a well-known explorer reported an African tribe that sharpened the teeth in order to better strip the hulls from watermelon seeds. Within recent years a firm in Alabama has undertaken to manufacture vinegar from the juice, and from Russia come reports that during the past few years of hardship concentrated watermelon juice has been used in place of sugar to sweeten coffee.
The production of watermelon seed is an industry by itself. In a single county in Florida approximately 7000 acres of watermelons are grown annually for seed purposes. This one section supplies a great proportion of the watermelon seed planted in the United States, and on occasion also ships to foreign planters. In recent years shipments of seed for planting have been made to Tarsus, Asia Minor, to China, and other far-distant points.
During past years profits in our southern watermelon industry have been severely cut, due to the effect of several destructive diseases. Anthracnose, a fungous disease of the foliage and fruit, means reduced yield and pock-marked melons that rot in the field and in the freight car. Stem-and rot is a trouble that occurs in transit only, and originates with infection of the melon by the casual organism at the cut stem. Anthracnose is controlled by spraying the vines; stem-end rot by the practice of field sanitation and stem treatment. Plans are being made by the department of agriculture to assist growers, distributors, and carriers in the proper application of disease-control measures during the coming season.

Preliminary steps have been taken to adopt a plan of work for 1922, even though a county home demonstration agent cannot be added to the county extension force this year.
"The University of California has done, and is doing, some excellent work for the farm women of the state, which should be included in the program for Orange county.
"Some of the outstanding projects consist of canning, drying and evaporating of fruits and vegetables, household management, interior decorating, kitchen arrangement, millinery classes and dressmaking, child nutrition and the selection of seasonal foods."
PETROLEUM RESOURCES AND POSSIBILITIES
California's petroleum resources and the possibility of obtaining crude oil in portions of the state now unproductive, are discussed in detail in a new report just issued by the California state mining bureau, according to an announcement given to the press by State Mineralogist Fletcher Hamilton.
This publication, known as Bulletin 89, and entitled "Petroleum Resources of California," was written by Lawrence Vander Leck, an oil geologist of recognized ability in his chosen field. In preparing his report Vander Leck spent twelve months traveling back and forth over every portion of California, and no part of the state is so remote that it was overlooked when the author wrote down his conclusions"
FORD SEEKS MORE PUBLICITY
Having abandoned his fight upon the Jews, Henry Ford has started a campaign to "rescue the money question from cranks and brigands." Strange campaign to be started by the man who thought he could get the boys out of the trenches by Christmas, 1915, by sending a peace ship to northern Europe, and who has made a fortune of something like a billion dollars in seventeen years. Cranks and brigands, indeed!
LAMONA BREED MAKES FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE
The Lamona, the new white-egg-laying general-purpose fowl originated and being developed by the United States department of agriculture, made its first public appearance at the Madison Square Garden poultry show, held in New York from January 25 to 30, where 15 of the birds were shown in the open classes. In addition to the Lamonas, and other government-bred fowls of standard breeds, the department put on an extensive exhibit consisting of models of poultry houses, a display of feathers of the standard breeds, appliances such as feed hoppers, brood coops, and a fattening battery. A series of panels, made up of photographs, charts, and placards, showed the more important standard
