STRAINING AT GNATS
Senator Pat Harrison, of Mississippi,
let a large sized political cat out of
the bag the other day when he delared that the reason the Democrats
in the senate objected to the early
consideration of Henry Ford's contest
of Senator Newberry's seat in the
senate was that on account of the
arms conference being in session
there would not be adequate publicity
for the performance he and his colleagues desire to pull off.
In other words the purpose back of
this proceeding, as of every move
made by Mr. Ford in an effort to take
from Mr. Newberry the seat to which
the people of Michigan elected him,
is publicity. Publicity is craved for
the multi-millionaire skipper of the
peace ark and his associates in the
work of trying to put Commander
Newberry into the penitentiary or at
lease out of the senate for the high
crime and misdemeanor of running
over the Ford ambition to sit on the
Democratic side of the senate.
The senate of the United States ought to go a little further and probe into the rottenness and crookedness of election conditions in states of the solid south, where by force, fraud and legal trickery five-fifths of the eligible voters, including more white men than black, have been denied the right to participate in elections, and representative government has been absolutely overthrown.
Congress ought to know, and the country ought to know why it is that in the state of Mississippi, with a population of 788,384, a total vote of 82.482 was cast in 1920, while in the much maligned state of Michigan, portrayed by Democratic senators as a hot bed of political corruption, with a population of 3,667,232, voters to the number of 1,025,262 exercised the eight of suffrage last year. In Mississippi one person in 21 voted; in Michigan nearly one-third of all the people...
Congress ought to know, and the country ought to know why it is that in the state of Mississippi, with a population of 788,384, a total vote of 82.482 was cast in 1920, while in the much maligned state of Michigan, portrayed by Democratic senators as a hot bed of political corruption, with a population of 3,667,232, voters to the number of 1,025,262 exercised the right of suffrage last year. In Mississippi one person in 21 voted; in Michigan nearly one-third of all the people were permitted to and did go to the polls. In Indiana recently attacked by Senator Harrison's colleague, Senator Williams, as a politically backward state, there were 1,232,437 voters out of a total population of 2,930,544—more than forty per cent of all the people voted! In the state of Illinois at the last general election more votes were cast than in all the states of the solid south combined. There are sitting in the house of representatives today more than fifty Democratic congressmen whose constituencies are mythical whose districts are political rotten boroughs. This condition exists in plain and flagrant violation of the constitution, which congress, in defiance of the mandatory provisions of the fundamental law its members are sworn to obey and uphold, refuses to punish by reducing the representation of these states in proportion to their cutting down of the eligible electorate. And while this condition, so corrupt, crooked and unjust cries out in vain for action at the hands of congress, members of the senate seriously get up and emit flapdoodle about political conditions in the state of Michigan!
To investigate the election of Commander Newberry on the demand of the sensational Henry Ford while choosing deliberate ytO ignore this wholesale overthrow of constitutional government in the only states of the union that elected Democratic senators last November, is a travesty, and the only explanation of the farcal proceeding is the extreme need of the southern Domecratic oligarchy and its political subjects in the north for some means of diverting attention from the really great and overshadowing franchise scandal of American politics.

MINING BUREAU REPORT
The California state mining bureau announces the issuance of its seventh report, prepared under the direction of Fletcher Hamilton, state mineralogist, which covers all recent mining activities.
In spite of the depression and inactivity of some branches of the industry, the annual value of more than fifty mineral products of California shows a production of a quarter of a billion dollars. This is an increase of more than one thousand per cent in the past thirty years. Mr. Hamilton states that a surprisingly large number of inquiries are received at the mining bureau, evidencing a distinct revival of interest in all branches of mining in California and particularly in gold mining.
To mining men, as well as to those thoroughly familiar with the mining situation in California, this publication will prove a revelation as showing the present vast mining possibilities of California even broadened and more attractive today than they were in the days of the Argonauts.
The report is attractively bound in cloth, comprising six hundred pages and may be secured by addressing the state mining Bureau, Perry building San Francisco, or any of the district offices of the state mining bureau, located at Auburn, Redding, Los Angeles, Coalinga, Taft, Bakerfield, Santa Maria and Santa Paula. The price of the publication is $1.75 including delivery charges, which merely covers the cost of printing and distribution.
