Charging the killing of a deer on a game preserve, in violation of the state law, Game Warden W. E. Adkinson Monday swore out a complaint against Percy V. Crump, Trabuco rancher and apiarist. The offense was alleged to have been committed on October 5, ten days before the close of the deer season. Hunting on the game refuge is prohibited, unless permits are secured from the state fish and game commission. These permits are not issued, it is understood, except for destroying predatory animals. Adkinson is said to have come upon the spot where the deer was slain, and to have followed its trail to where it was dressed. Steps have been taken to begin laying of a belt line of large water mains around the business district of the city, which will afford greater pressure and consequently greater fire protection. At a cost of $30,000 a ten-inch main will be laid around an area approximately one mile square. The council at its last meeting also authorized City Manager Steward to proceed with the paving of a six-foot strip on the north side of Center street between Lemon and Clementine streets. This is the result of a plan to widen the street. The buildings have been set back, and a sidewalk 12 feet nine inches wide will be laid. Frank E. Monaghan died at his home in Glendale on Sunday, after a lingering illness. The funeral occurred yesterday, and was attended by a number of Elks from Santa Ana, where deceased formerly resided. Monaghan was conductor of the first railroad train that entered this city, in the early seventies. His train arrived at the Loara station in the evening, and returned to Los Angeles the next morning. Monaghan retired from railroading to go into the mercantile business at Needles. He was a partner of Dan Murphy, the Brea canyon oil magnate. His estate is valued at half a million dollars. There were fifteen cars of tomatoes shipped out of Fullerton last week by the Orange County Produce Growers' association it was announced by J. W. Wallop, secretary. Wallop stated that the market is now the best it has been this year, the growers netting $1.40 per lug in pool No. 7 last week, this being the highest price for the season. This association is using the Benchley packing house, and is the only one in the county operating a full crew at full time, it was stated. It is one of the busiest little places in the county just now, a regular bee hive of industry. Seven cars of tomatoes were shipped by the American Fruit Growers, market conditions being most satisfactory. The Benchley Fruit company shipped eight cars of nuts. With eight speeders and five spotlight offenders nabbed in the past few days, County Motorcycle Officer Henry S. Warner is backing Justice J. B. Cox's persistent struggle for traffic law enforcement. Four speeders were named in complaints filed Monday and four more included in charges Tuesday. Speeders named in the complaints issued Monday were O. Witherell, Hollywood; J. A. Durham, Los Angeles; Jean Cox, Santa Ana, and Tom Lloyd, Long Beach. Spotlight offenders were five in number. They are William Cox, National City; Rex Sawyer, Los Angeles; Don Carpenter, Fullerton; L. A. Connell, San Diego, and E. F. King, Los Angeles. Judgment to the amount of $8000 was awarded to Mrs. Blanche Newton in her suit against A. N. Cox for $15,000 damages for injuries suffered in an automobile collision. Noel Newton, whose case was presented at the same time was awarded $3112.60. He asked for $9000 damages. The case went to the jury about 2:30 Thursday afternoon and a verdict was reached shortly before 5 p.m. W. W. Krick was foreman of the jury. Woodruff and Shoemaker, of Los Angeles, represented the plaintiffs. W. I. Gilbert and Scarborough, Forgy and Reinhaus acted as attorneys for the defendant. FALKENSTEIN'S Years of Service Anniversary Sales in progress. See the windows for particulars. ALKENSTEIN'S Armistice day is a legal holiday. It has been proclaimed such by Governor Stephens. Issuance by the proclamation means that the schools of Orange county and the state must close November 11, R. P. Mitchell, superintendent of county schools, stated. The action is said to clear a situation that has caused authorities more or less trouble. Armistice day has been declared a legal holiday by act of the state legislature, but the act does not carry a provision that schools must close. Certain legal holidays are designated as closing days for the schools. Laws do provide, however, that schools must not be kept in session on holidays declared by proclamation of a governor or of the president of the United States. Authorities of many of the schools of the county had arranged to continue school tomorrow, with patriotic exercises featuring the program of the day. Southern Counties Gas company of California has been authorized by the railroad commission to issue and sell at not less than 95 per cent of their face value and accrued interest $100,-000 of Series "F" 10-year collateral trust bonds and to use the proceeds to reimburse its treasury for money expended for extensions and betterments and thereafter to pay current liabilities. The collateral trust bonds are to be secured by the deposit of $131,300 of the county's first mortgage bonds. Better have the best word than the last word.
