ORTHOPEDIC AUXILIARY TO MEET FRIDAY On Friday evening at 7:30 the Anaheim Guild of the Orthopedic hospital school will meet in the Central building, suite 3, on East Center street. Preston Slayback, business executive of the Orthopedic foundation, will give an address on the financing and management of the new hospital school. The object of the meeting is to formulate plans for furnishing a suite of rooms in the hospital to be known as Anaheim room to be used for the purpose of caring for indigent crippled children of Anaheim and vicinity. This hospital school not only furnishes surgical and hospital care for the correction of orthopedic deformities, but all other physical needs as well, even dentists being supplied to take care of the children's teeth. The mental development of the children being cared for under the supervision of teachers who do bedside teaching, while the little ones are confined to their beds, and later when they are able they are taken to the school rooms. This work is endorsed by the board of education, physical training department in both University of California and of Southern California, welfare commissions, state board of charities and many other organizations. The new hospital school has two large school rooms—one of which is arranged for out-door teaching. The gymnasium is especially equipped to meet the needs of these children because muscle training constitutes a larger part of this corrective work, perhaps than surgery. The orthopedic surgeons on this taff not only have a local reputation in this line of surgery but national as well. As Los Angeles is the recognized center of the south both these hospitals are located there, but their doors are open to the entire southland and about thirty per cent of their patients come from outside Los Angeles. There seems to be a move on foot in several localities in California to establish small associations for the purpose of soliciting both public and private funds, and placing them in private profit-sharing hospitals, rather than working for the centralization of funds and effort, which will necessarily result in the maximum amount of efficiency and economy. Several localities have suffered from this promiscuous solicitation of funds by these associations which are not registered by welfare commissions, endorsed by state board of charities. The state board of charities and other welfare commissions have been combating these small associations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara as well as near-by towns. For this purpose auxiliary guilds to these large institutions have been organized in carolous localities, Passadena having recently formed one to work in conjunction with the children's hospitals in Los Angeles, and the Anaheim guild is to work with the Los Angeles orthopedic hospital school.
