NOTES ABOUT THE OIL FIELDS Items of Interest Gleaned From Southern California's Producing Fields and Progress Made. On the Kraemer home place the Wonder Oil company, Ltd., has spudded in and is now drilling on well No. 2. No. 1 continues to be on of the most consistent producers in the field, holding steadily at 1200 barrels daily. The gravity has increased a little, now being close to 25 degrees. A string of cable tools was run in the latter part of last week and the actual cleaning out work with intentions to go deeper on the Richfield-Yorba No. 1 was started. Universal opinion has it that the Richfield-Yorba will get something by putting this well down to 3.-200 or 3300 feet. The well was originally drilled to 3150 feet. The eight-inch casing set by the Clark Oil company at 3600 feet failed to shut off the water. Several tests have been made and it looks like the only thing to do now is to reeement. Drilled originally to 4118 feet, the Clark well, formerly known as the Wetzel, has had a checkered career. However, the United Oil company, now working on it, claims it will be put down to the Kraemer gusher depth and a well made of it. The Petroleum Midway is sitting bollers and putting the finishing touches on the rigging up work at Bennett No. 1, Buena Park, and will be ready to start drilling about the end of the week. The Standard Oil company completed rigging up at Garden Grove and drilling preparations late last week. Increased development work on the Bastanchury. Another well, No. 1, is drilling at 3800, and No. 5, a 5200-foot well drilled by the Union some years ago, is being cleaned out for a test. On the Murphy-Coyot the Standard has five wells underway. No. 84 is drilling at 2945, No. 85 at 3000 feet and No. 86 at 2450. A side-tracing job is holding up No. 78. No. 83 stands cemented at 2895. On the Emery property wells are down over 4000 feet. No. 31 has been cemented at 4020, No. 37 at 4002 and No. 38 is drilling at 3850. Drilling is now going ahead at the Scientific Oil company's No. 1, La Mirada. At 900 feet the tools are in brown shale. Good drilling by the Union Oil company is getting Meyer No. 4 down rapidly. At 4025 the well is in the blue shale. About 600 feet further will be necessary before the sand at No. 3 will be struck. Meyer No. 5 is going nicely at 3400. Bell No. 1 shows 3453 feet but redrilling is now at 3275. Gregg No. 1 at Rideout Height is being plugged for abandonment. Despite the recent cut in crude oil prices and other conditions which have had oil interests of the state seriously considering a temporary revision of development programs, there has been no let up in activities at Huntington Beach during the past week. One hundred and fifteen rigs are the baler, making difficult. Huntington Beach ed heavily by the company. Six new wells on the Huntington "D" Huntington "E" Jones and Thompson No. ing cemented at 2976 A-9 is drilling at 2 A-11 at 1600, A-12 at cation and rlg build at A-13. Huntington 2950, B-3 at 2400 am and D-1 are drilling now drilling at 2425 stands cemented at that property's next No. 3 is drilling at 2 STRAWBERRY TIMES THE DELICIOUS Different Ways To Many Tastes—THE cake is the perfect strawberry at home in the slim way, is more tempting elaborate concoction tel chefs. The Standard Oil company completed rigging up at Garden Grove and drilling preparations late last week and is now drilling at 600 feet. The Richfield Giant created a real sensation at Richfield last Saturday when a nice showing of oil was struck at 3950 feet. The oil sand was first noticed at 3936. The well is looking so good that drilling will be stopped and the hole cemented somewhere around 3900. The showing practically assures the Richfield Giant a producer. This well was drilled in record time by Jack McKeon. The Union Oil company's wildcat well drilling at San Juan Capistrano, is now close to 4300 feet. The formation is a nice brown shale, but still shows no indications of oil. At the time the well was located one of the leading California geologists stated that the oil was there at one time in the earth's history, but it was not there now. At almost 4200 feet the Brea Canyon Oil company's No. 82 struck an oil sand that gave the well its greatest encouragement since this deep test well was started a year ago. While the drilling is still going on inside the three-inch pipe, the showing is good enough to warrant a nice producer if brought in at the present time. The sand will be penetrated as far as possible and then the well will be brought in. The showing of this well gives the needed encouragement to deep drilling in the Brea field. No. 33, the well that created the big stir last week by blowing out, has quieted down and as soon as all the gas pressure has been released the drilling will be resumed at 3300 feet. In the blowout the well made but little oil. No. 2-A is drilling at 2700 feet in shale. Drilling on the Bixby ranch syndicate well is now at 4000 feet. To date this well has not shown anything but a fine sand that looks like a water sand. Unless something better shows up pretty soon, the well will be abandoned. At 2780 feet the Long Beach Consolidated set pipe and the well is now standing cemented. It is under Meyer No. 5 is going nicely at 3400. Bell No. 1 shows 3453 feet but redrilling is now at 3275. Gregg No. 1 at Rideout Heights is being plugged for abandonment. Despite the recent cut in crude oil prices and other conditions which have had oil interests of the state seriously considering a temporary revision of development programs, there has been no let up in activities at Huntington Beach during the past week. One hundred and fifteen rigs are now up in the field, 57 companies are actively operating and 11 wells are on a steady producing basis. In addition many other companies are in process of organization and as one big operator in the field has it—"there is going to be a greatly increased development program entered on in the field before there is any slowing down in activities." The Amalgamated Oil company is making preparations to bring in Huntington 1-A, drilled to 2800 feet. From all indications it should make a nice well, being just across the road from one of the Standard's best producers. Fowler No. 1 is now drilling ahead at 31000 feet. Fowler No. 2 is rigging up, as is also Pearce No. 1. Huntington 2-A, the Amalgamated's first producer, is cleaning out and will be drilled from 2565 feet deeper. Just as the Argonaut Oil company had its Turley No. 1 bailed down and starting to flow, the water broke in on the well and shut the oil out. Efforts are now being made to locate the water. The well is 3044 feet deep. Bolaa Chica No. 1, drilled to 2134 feet, has been showing very strong and gives every evidence of being one of the field's best. Every precaution has been taken—and the hole is considered to be in the best condition of any drilled at Huntington. Work on No. 2 is starting. Drill pipe has been secured for the Blue Shale Oil and Mining company and the actual drilling out of the cement will start before the end of the week. On account of the rotary equipment being taken out it was rumored that there was some mystery about the action. It now develops that the rotary was exchanged for a heavier type. Before the end of the week Edens Syndicate No. 1 will be on production. The cement has been drilled out at 2280 feet, the state has puts it O.K. on the shut-off and now the well, drilling in the sand at 2260 feet is being brought in. The well is of special interest on account of its location. To date this well has not shown anything but a fine sand that looks like a water sand. Unless something better shows up pretty soon, the well will be abandoned. At 2780 feet the Long Beach Consolidated set pipe and the well is now standing cemented. It is understood that a showing of oil was struck before cementing. The National Exploration company has two interesting wildcat wells drilling. At Chino canyon the pipe trouble with the casing at 1300 feet has been overcome; the string of 15-1-2 inch has been landed successfully. Drilling at Oilinda No. 1 is meeting with a lot of success, as the well is only 2300 feet deep and the showings in the sandy shale are most encouraging. Both wells will open up a lot of new territory for the southern field. Both the National Securities company and the Orange County Petroleum company are doing consistent drilling in the Orange county park district. National Security No. 1 is down 2000 feet and Orange County Petroleum is close to 1500 feet. The New York-California Oil company is satisfied with the outlook in the Bixby hills and has located well No. 2. No. 1 made 500 feet of hole, ran into a caving formation and had to discontinue drilling until pipe can be put in the well. Nothing has been done on the Olive Petroleum company's well during the past month. Tepothal No. 1 continues drilling and is now better than 1700 feet. The Standard Oil company has inment being taken out it was rumored that there was some mystery about the action. It now develops that the rotary was exchanged for a heavier type. Before the end of the week Edens Syndicate No. 1 will be on production. The cement has been drilled out at 2280 feet, the state has puts it O.K. on the shut-off and now the well, drilling in the sand at 2250 feet is being brought in. The well is of special interest on account of its location. It will prove up a large area in the central west side of the field. A feature of the drilling at Fidelity No. 1 is the early and continued showing of the oil. Struck at 350 feet, the showing of oil has continued almost continuously to the present depth of a 1000 feet. The showing is not big, just enough to show that it is there. Contrary to the wells drilled in the vicinity the Gypsy Syndicate is getting a lot of hard drilling. The hard formation was struck at 350 feet and at 675 feet, the present depth, it has not softened. At Huntington Central No. 2, the cement was drilled out at 3000 feet and the water was found not shut off. No. 1 is being cleaned out with the intention of going deeper. The rigs and tubing have been put in at Miley-Keck No. 2. The best that the well will do is to pump a little oil by heads. Drilled to 2590, this well showed every indication of being a good producer. The way the well has turned out is something of a disappointment. Should Miley-Keck No. 2 fail to make good at 2590, it will be drilled deeper. At Nos. 3 and 4 rig building is under way. No success has attended the efforts of the Pantages-Huntington to get the baler out of its No. 1, lost at 2340. Some 145 feet of sand has filled in on... ANAHEIM GAZETTE the baler, making the job all the more difficult. Huntington Beach is being developed heavily by the Standard Oil company. Six new wells were started, two on the Huntington "A" lease, one on the Huntington "D" lease, two on Huntington "E" Jones Community No. 2 and Thompson No. 1. A-5 is standing cemented at 2970, also A-7 at 2790. A-9 is drilling at 2300, A-10 at 2400, A-11 at 1600, A-12 at 400, A-14 is a location and rlg building is under way at A-13. Huntington B-2 is drilling at 2950, B-3 at 2400 and B-4 at 600. C-1 and D-1 are drilling at 2400. E-1 is now drilling at 2425. Bolsa No. 2 stands cemented at 2770 and will be that property's next producer. Bolsa No. 3 is drilling at 2425. STRAWBERRY TIME SUGGESTS THE DELICIOUS SHORTCAKE Different Ways to Make It to Suit the Many Tastes—The Best Shortcake is the Simplest Perfect strawberry shortcake, made at home in the simple old-fashioned way, is more tempting than the most elaborate concoctions of bakers or hotel chefs. Biscuit shortcake, by all means, is the masculine verdict; a little "shorter" than usual, perhaps, the housewife may decide, but otherwise simply biscuit dough, the lightest and best she knows how to produce, toped off with luscious whole berries, whipped cream, icing, or egg whites. Individual shortcakes are attractive in appearance and easy to serve. The dough may be cut out with a very large biscuit cutter or made into squares. Instead of splitting one large cooked biscuit, two thinner rounds of dough may be baked together, if the lower one is first buttered to enable the cook to slip them apart. beater, until the frosting takes definite shape, when the beater is lifted. Take from the fire and add 1-8 teaspoon salt and 1-2 teaspoon of vanilla or other flavoring. Continue heating until firm enough to spread without running. BUDGET SYSTEM AT LAST The budget system for the nation, promised by party platforms, urged by practically all newspapers, pushed by state and national associations, indorsed by a referendum of the United States Chamber of Commerce, passed by one house or the other, and once passed by both houses of congress and vetoed by President Wilson, on the ground that it abridged the constitutional rights of the president, is to go into force with the beginning of the next fiscal year, July 1. The house passed a comprehensive budget bill by a vote of 344 to 9. A budget bill was also passed by the senate some time ago; the chief difference being that the house would establish the bureau of the budget as a separate executive branch, while the senate would put the bureau under the treasury department. Strangely enough the house taking a position exactly opposite that of its predecessor, would make the comptroller general, the chief auditing official of the government, removable by congress alone, while the senate, which criticised Mr. Wilson's veto, would now require joint action of congress and the president. But there is no feeling that the difference will prevent conference agreement. There is the same reluctance on the part of spending committee there has always been, but public sentiment is so overwhelmingly for the reform and the plight of the nation's finances so serious, that any dilatory tactics would be tried at peril of the conferees. Say It With simply biscuit dough, the lightest and best she knows how to produce, topped off with luscious whole berries, whipped cream, icing, or egg whites. The strawberries, after washing and hulling, may be cut in halves and sprinkled with sugar shortly before the biscuit dough is made. A few perfect whole berries should be saved to decorate the top layer. The others should be merely cut, not crushed nor mutilated. Hull and trim a few at a time, drop for a moment only into a bowl of clean, cold water, so that the sand sinks to the bottom, while the fruit floats on top, then skim off into a colander to drain dry. If a whole quart of hulled berries is turned into a pan of water some of the berries should become soft and lose their fine flavor before the entire quantity can be rinsed and taken out. The sand from the upper ones often settle on those beneath. The same is true when any fruit or vegetable is merely put in a colander and thrust under running water. Putting the shortcake together at serving-time is a matter of individual preference. The desert will be excellent if it merely consists of the split buttered biscuit covered in the center and on top with berries from which the fragrant juice is beginning to spread. Whipped cream, sweetened and flavored with vanilla, is perhaps the most quickly prepared finish for the shortcake, if there is plenty of cream on hand. Beaten egg-whitees, sweetened as for a merlingue, make an admirable substitute for cream, and are preferred by many who think the whipped cream too rich. Another method is to use white cake icing, putting on each half of the cake first a layer of icing, then a layer of strawberries, and last a generous coat of icing. Strawberrey shortcake for breakfast, made with or without plain cream, makes a delicious variant of the ordinary diet. With it should be served either a glass of milk or a dish of cottage cheese to make it a more complete meal. This is an ideal breakfast or lunch for children, as well as a very satisfactory change for Sunday night. Since congress is responsible for policies under this government the budgetary methods followed by most countries require modification for American conditions. But too much time has already been spent on discussion of theoretical perfection. The country demands a start and reconciliation of house and senate differences will not be difficult. A shortcake of any description is so hearty a dessert that a somewhat lighter meal than usual should precede it. When there is a scant portion of potato or rice, some recooked meat to use up, or a meatless meal to consider, strawberry shortcake is an appropriate dessert. It should never be planned as the end of a long, heavy dinner, when the appetite has been fully satisfied before the sweet course is reached. Any good biscuit rule may be used. The recipes given below have been tested by food specialists of the United States department of agriculture. Biscuit dough for shortcake— 1 pint flour. 4 teaspoons baking powder. 3-4 teaspoon salt. 2-3 to 3-4 cup milk. 4 to 6 tablespoons fat. Sift the dry ingredients. Work in the fat with the tips of the fingers. Use enough milk to ensure a rather soft dough that should be patted flat rather than rolled. Bake in a fairly hot oven.
