IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Items of Local Interest Culled from the Files of Former Issues of This Paper 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK The village of Santa Ana now containing about 150 souls, is owned principally by W. H. Spurgeon, A. L. Bush and D. H. Samls. It contains one general merchandise store, a post office (with daily mail) a very fine school house, blacksmith shop, saloon and a large number of hastily constructed residences. The very newness of the buildings, and the continual projection and erection of others is a circumstance calculated to convince an observing person that it has resources as a town, and good prospects as a location. Immediately outside the town plat is a two-story brick house of very large dimensions, just completed, and which cost at least $10,000. It is the property of Mr. T. Casad; and probably is not excelled as a building in this county outside of the city of Los Angeles. A new hotel is about to be built, and as the telegraph line passes through the town, a telegraph office will soon be opened. Our patrons at Santa Ana will please notice that W. H. Spurgeon, Esq., of that place is an authorized agent for the Gazette, to receive both money and subscriptions. Mr. George Kuchel, who has long been identified with the butchering business in Anaheim has sold out his entire interest in that business to Wartenberg & Co., Mr. Wartenberg 25 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK Sult has been instituted by the Tustin Fruit Association against the Earl Fruit Company in Superior Court. The plaintiff alleges that under a contract between the two parties the defendant sold thirty-two carloads of oranges from March to July, 1894, from the proceeds of which a sum aggregating $1,878.02 was fraudulently withheld. The case is an important one to fruit growers who, as a rule, have suffered too often by tardy commission men. The prominence of the defendant company lends more than the usual interest. This in the second case now on the docket of the Superior court in which the Tustin Association sues the Earl Fruit Company, the former being for a larger sum alleged to be due owing to the failure of defendant in fulfilling a contract to dispose of a stipulated number of carloads of oranges during a certain period. While in Santa Ana one day last week we took occasion to go out to the Willet's stables and see Silkwood. The famous horse is kept in a rude box-stall, which we should judge. Was hardly good enough for an ordinary roadster. The place is unkempt and entirely unfit place for a horse that has developed into such wonderful speed and which is the pride of Orange County. Mr. George Kuchel, who has long been identified with the butchering business in Anaheim has sold out his entire interest in that business to Wartenberg & Co. Mr. Wartenberg is, consequently making extraordinary efforts to supply the people with the choicest meats, and frequently stays up all night, neglecting his health, that the people may have porter house and surroins for breakfast. Mr. Kuchel, having made an ample fortune in the business, is about to make a pleasure trip through Europe and the Holy Land. Married, in this city on Sunday the 5th inst., by the Rev. P. Verdeguer at the Catholic Church, Don Pedro Rivera to Senorita Guadalupe Manriquis. Mr. Schneider has had a new and spacious wine shed erected, the walls being of brick. He has also erected a new wine still—the largest in Anaheim. Now that another line of communication is open, being the stage line from Anaheim to Wilmington, it is hoped that our citizens, at least will give it every encouragement and all possible patronage. In order to get the "Cork out of the bottle" wherein Anaheim lies at present, and to bring us better communications, let those we do obtain meet with the permanent encouragement. The Gazette acknowledges receipt of one hundred feet of apples from the lumber yard of Dicken, Huntington & Co. Mr. Huntington has our thanks and when we require a few dozen lumber or a ton of redwood posts, we will give him a call. An extensive dairy is being established about two miles below Santa Ana by Mr. Jerome Porter, formerly of Los Angeles. He now has on hand one hundred cows, and is purchasing continually, intending to increase the number to two hundred and fifty supplies will be furnished regularly from the dairy after the 20th instant. While in Santa Ana one day last week we took occasion to go out to the Willet's stables and see Silkwood. The famous horse is kept in a rude box-stall, which we should judge was hardly good enough for an ordinary roadster. The place is unkempt and entirely unfit place for a horse that has developed into such wonderful speed and which is the pride of Orange County. There are several cases of measles in town, Mr. Dougherty's young son and Alex Wright's child being afflicted with the complaint. O. W. Bill of Garden Grave has sold his five acres to Mrs. Huntoon of Nevada, the consideration being $1500. The annual meeting of stockholders of the Anaheim Sugar Company was held Saturday. The following resolution was introduced by Alexander Henry. Owing to the lateness of the hour it was said over for adoption at a subsequent meeting. "Whereas, the Anaheim Co-operative Beet Sugar Company has labored for more than four years in an effort to raise money for the purpose of building a sugar factory, and all such efforts have been thus far proven failures, and whereas by reasons of dissentions in said corporation it finds itself without credit and unable to raise money even to pay the ordinary expenses of the corporation; and whereas there are now $4000 due for debts incurred and no money in the treasury with which to pay the same; and whereas, there is no prospect that this corporation will ever be able to raise the amount of money necessary to build the sugar factory or to carry out the objects for which the corporation was founded; therefore be it resolved, that this corporation take immediate steps to pay up its indebtedness and to disincorporate at the earliest possible moment." One of the wags in Schilling's minstrels perpetrated a horrible joke upon our efficient street car service the other evening when he said, after arriving in town he became despondent and threatened suicide. He forthwith bled himself to the western limits of town and laid upon the track and waited patiently for six hours for the car to come along that would send him to destruction. He waited in vain, he said, and changing his mind, arose and took his departure for his hotel where he became reconciled and abandoned developing: 2,500 electrical energy mately $600,000. On Monday night while the stage was tipping over on Center Street, Dr. Heyerman's favorite buggy horse took fright and ran away at a fearful speed. In the vicinity of Anabeim the people are prospering without the shadow of doubt. Water has been extended to Fairview, and through the Coyote Valley, and those who have no water no need it. At Santa Ana every farmer is cheerful and contented. A few days since, while at that place, we took occasion to inquire of the assemblage of fifteen farmers (who had gathered at the store of Mr. Spurgeon) if they were satisfied or discouraged, and they unanimously declared their satisfaction with their prospects, and the prospects of their viability for the coming year. Now, it is quite certain that, if nine tenths of our people are satisfied, the other tenth must be the uneasy, shiftless class which falls to our lot as well as to the lot of all other communities, to have subsist among and upon us. While buildings continue to be erected, fences continue to be put up, new lands continue to be plowed, and money is as plenty hereabouts, the man who complains is insulting dame fortune, and may some day experience hard times, as a punishment for this present grumbling. Anaheim Gazette, per year, $150 payable in advance. ANTICIPATING the enormous demand for hydroelectric development the Southern California Edison Company has made application to the State Railroad Commission for permission to issue several million dollars of its common capital stock. It will resume its active campaign for the distribution of these junior securities among the 250,000 consumers of the company, according to information received by District Manager W. L. Deimling today. Electricity has come to be regarded as the prime mover for all agricultural and manufacturing activities in the Southwest, which makes its development a question of paramount importance to the community. A very large number of the consumers of the Southern California Edison Company are owners of common capital stock and also 70 per cent of its officers and permanent employees. It has already worked out a definite program for developing 750,000 horse power from the waters of Big Creek, Huntington Lake, Shaver Lake, Florence Lake and the Kern River which will cost $200,000,000 and has made application for filing on sites, at Marble Canyon and Diamond Creek on the Colorado River, which have an additional capacity of developing 2,500,000 horsepower of electrical energy at a cost of approximately $600,000,000. Population absolutely follows power. It has been demonstrated by every possible angle that with the completion of the power projects that the Southern California Edison Company now has in hand, Los Angeles and the territory tributary to it will have third place in the population of the American continent. The increase of community wealth following the location of the Provisions of an Act of the Legislature of the State of California, entitled, "An Act authorizing the incurring of indebtedness by cities, towns and municipal corporations for municipal improvements, and regulating the acquisition, construction and completion thereof" which became a law February 26th, 1901, and all acts supplementary thereto and amendatory thereof. "It is further certified that all the requirements of law and of the ordinances of the City of Anaheim have been fully complied with by the proper officers for the issuing of this bond; that this issue of bonds has been authorized by the vote of two-thirds of all the voters on the question of such issue at a specialatgathwfar of such issue at a special election duly and regularly called and held in said City on the 5th day of October, 1920, and that the total amount of this issue, together with all indebtedness of said City, does not in the aggregate exceed fifteen per cent of the assessed value of all the real and personal property of the said City of Anaheim, nor does it exceed the limit prescribed by the Constitution and laws of the State of California. "That before or at the time of the incurring the indebtedness evidenced hereby provision has been made for the collection of an annual tax sufficient to pay the interest on such indebtedness as it falls due and also, provision to constitute a sinking fund for the payment of the principal thereof on or before maturity. "In witness whereof the said City of Anaheim has caused this bond to be signed by the executive of said Municipality, to-wit: the President of the Board of Trustees of said City of Anaheim, and also by the Treasurer of said City, and to be countersigned by the Clerk of said City, and the corporate seal of said city to be affixed thereto; and said city has also caused the coupons thereto attached to be numbered consecutively and signed by the Treasurer of said City of Anaheim. Population absolutely follows power. It has been demonstrated by every possible angle that with the completion of the power projects that the Southern California Edison Company now has in hand, Los Angeles and the territory tributary to it will have third place in the population of the American continent. The increase of community wealth following the location of factories which are coming to the Coast, and the intensive cultivation of the semiarid lands of Southern California is simply fabulous. Money invested in electric development multiplies community wealth in proportions which are absolutely staggering. The method of financing adopted by the Southern California Edison Company is similar to that of other public utilities in the United States and consists in the issuing of bonds from approximately 75 per cent of the cost of construction and these bonds are sold to the public at large throughout the country. The other 25 per cent of the financing is done through the sale of stock or junior securities, as they are commonly known. The stock represents the equity of the Company and the bonds the mortgage. A public utility company can borrow 75 per cent on its actual investment and it, therefore, follows that every dollar of stock sold in Southern California, $3 of Eastern money is brought here to build power plants and distribution lines.
