NOTES ABOUT THE OIL FIELDS
Items of Interest Gleaned From Southern California's Producing Fields and Progress Made.
OIL NOTES
Drilling at 2375 feet, the Fullerton Oil Company is now making a new hole at Anaheim Union No. 1. It is the intention of the Fullerton to go deep on this well. Travis, No. 4 still stands idle.
Falling to get shut-off on the water at 3160 feet, the Olive Petroleum Company put in a string of 6-inch pipe and is going ahead with the drilling. It is believed that at a deeper point a more suitable formation will be struck that will facilitate a complete water shut-off. The well is looking rather good and gives all the promise a wild-cat project needs.
The Union has just completed and brought in two wells in Brea Canyon. Stearns, No. 61 looks good for 260 barrels. Stearns No. 63 came in a few days ago and is making approximately 400 barrels. Those two wells, with the others that have been brought in during the last few months, brings the Union's Brea production up to about 2700 barrels daily of 27 gravity oil.
West Coast Oil Company did not bring in its No. 77 as scheduled last week. At 2780 the sand looked so good that it was decided to drill deeper. At 2845 this good-looking sanding away at the conglomerate at 1750. Nos. 83 and 87 are new rigs ready to start drilling.
The Union Oil Company's Stearns 57 is perhaps the most remarkable well that the Brea field has known.
Blowing out and catching fire, and burning for four days, the fire was extinguished and immediately the well turned into a gasser, that produced 2,000,000 feet a day. Now the gas pressure is going down at the rate of 150 barrels daily is taking the place of the gas. Drilled to only 1300 feet this well in the uncompleted stage is the biggest producer for its death in southern California.
Word received from Richfield this morning is to the effect that the Union Oil Company brought in No. 7 on the Chapman lease yesterday at a depth of 4263 feet.
Despite the fact that there is a large gas pressure the well is under complete control and is capable of doing 2000 barrels a day, which makes it the second biggest well ever brought in in this territory.
In addition to the oil production the well is making around 1,000,000 feet of gas daily, and the Union is marking up the property as one of its most profitable ventures in the California will have a lot of room for the Chapman proper wells are now drilling No. 6 at 4055 feet also No. 8 at 3500 ft.
Union has started No. 4 and is rigging No. 3 both new wells.
The difficulty of the No. 1 has been over is now going ahead The formation is but is not showing Coyle and Bogue 4015-foot well drills.
The Richfield Company's well No. 2 was early this week, brushing confines of turbines and shooting more than the top of the deck oil could be harped sprayed over surrovers for a radius of so far At the time of thinking the men were ing the well which With the exception of sanding, however up steadily to its averaging between The derrick for and drilling will be as the machinery location from the company is called the oil sands. will have a lot of new producers on the Chapman property, as two other wells are now drilling in the oil sand. No. 5 at 4055 feet is in the sand and also No. 8 at 3500 feet.
Union has started drilling on Towell No. 4 and is rigging up on J. W. Newell No. 3 both new wells.
The difficulty of the pipe at Shepard No. 1 has been overcome and drilling is now going ahead again at 4580 feet. The formation is hard brown shale, but is not showing any oil.
Coyle and Bogue No. 1 is now a 4015-foot well drilling in oilsand.
The Richfield Consolidated Oil Company's well No. 2 went on a rampage early this week, breaking away from the confines of tubing and pipelines and shooting more than 150 feet over the top of the derrick. Before the oil could be harnessed again it had sprayed over surrounding orange trees for a radius of several hundred feet. At the time of this unexpected gushing the men were in the act of cleaning the well which had sanded.
With the exception of an occasional sanding, however, No. 2 is holding up steadily to its initial production, averaging between 400 and 500 barrels.
The derrick for Well No. 3 is up and drilling will be started as soon as the machinery can be moved to the location from well No. 1, which the company is carrying deeper into the oil sands. This first well barely penetrated the sands. But went on record with the production of from 85 to 100 barrels until it sanded recently.
About 100 feet of tubing has yet to be removed from the hole, and as soon as this is accomplished, drilling will carry the well down through No. 1 will come in as a gusher with a production equal to that of well No. 2.
The bringing in of the Standard well on the B lease on Sunday, with a production said to be 1500 barrels, has proved the field for a considerable distance to the east. The Standard is said to have put 500 feet of screened casing on the end of the string, thus indicating the sand to be of a great thickness, the productivity of which should be large and consistent.
One of the latest companies to enter the field in the Sun Oil Company which boasts of having more leases than any other independent oil company in the field. The company leases extend from north to south just east of the Pacific Electric tracks. The company proposes to drill three wells. The task of outfitting the first well is already in progress.
The wells will be drilled by the Orange County Drilling Company. The Contractors have already established a record in the field by having put down the Venture well 2500 feet in three weeks.
AT HUNTINGTON BEACH
Interest in the oil flend operations at this point is now centered in the outcome of six wells which have been drilled and sand cemented, one of which came in last Sunday—the Standard B-1. These cemented wells are the Standard Nos. 3,4,5, the State Consolidated, the Vista Del Mar and the Milley Keck.
Standard wells Nos. 4 and 5 are cemented at the 2000-foot post, the Vista Del Mar at 2500, the State Consolidated at 2882, while the Milley & Keck property is resting at 2090. The cementing of a well based upon a theory outside of this general interest in the outcome of the field as a producer of crude oil, the attention of all has been attracted toward the Standard B-1 field, in the alfalfa field south of Reservoir hill, due to the fact that the well was brought in yesterday. This should have happened before had it not been for the delay which followed from the company's inability to secure screen casing to be used for the oil string. The well is between 2500 and 2600 feet deep. It is said to be a producer for 1500 barrels daily.
The deepest well of the field is the Torrence, belonging to the Standard Oil Company. This well is now down to 3900. It is located in the Bolsa Chica dome near the gun club house. Most of the formation below the 2500-foot level now being encounterer is brown shale, carrying some oil and gas.
The work of drilling the Surf well on the lowlands southeast of the city limits with rotary tools is proceeding very slowly on account of the depth of the hole. Samples are taken every 10 feet and it takes an hour to take the samples so the men are spending most of their time waiting for samples. The hole is now about 3600 feet with the mud looking very good and brown, indicating a good well if the oil-bearing sand and the shale continue deep enough. There is also a heavy gas pressure all of which speaks for a good producer.
The Texcal has had some trouble at its 2300-foot level, but this has been remedied by redrilling at that point, and now it looks as if the Texcal would probably come in as soon as any of them. The company is now in the brown shale and there is evidence of oil and some considerable sand. Its position is a great deal better than the West Whittier or the Amalgamated.

About 100 feet of tubing has yet to be removed from the hole, and as soon as this is accomplished, drilling will carry the well down through the 90-foot oil sands encountered in well No. 2. Officials of the company are confident that by deepening well outcome of six wells which have been drilled and sand cemented, one of which came in last Sunday—the Standard B-1. These cemented wells are the Standard Nos. 3,4,5, the State Consolidated, the Vista Del Mar and the Miley Keck.
