GRANTED PROBATION
ON ACCOUNT OF KIDDIES
Man Who Sold Other Peoples Furniture Goes Free.
"I am giving you this probation largely because of those two small lots there by your wife's side, who came into this world without their consent, and whose lives and whose chance in life I do not want to see marred or clouded through no fault of their own."
With these words, Judge Z. B. West announced the granting of probation to Fred Allen, who pleaded guilty to a grand larceny charge in Judge West's court.
Allen's pretty wife was visibly moved, and expressed herself as overwhelmed with joy at the turn of events. Meanwhile the two children babbled and played with trinkets, unaware that their destiny and the whole course of their lives had perhaps been changed by the tender heart of the judge.
Allen appeared to be very happy, and assured the Judge that "he wouldn't go straight, and be a man" hereafter, and that the present case, "had taught him a lesson that would last him the rest of his life."
Allen was held in connection with the removal and sale of furniture from a house Allen had rented from William Kellog in Yorba Linda.
The probationary period is for seven years, during which time Allen must report every two months to the probation officer for the first two years, and every three months for the next five years. He must also confine himself to the seven southern counties of California, must not gamble or drink, and must pay back the amount owing on the furniture he sold and his other debts.

Mrs. Allen testified that Allen had told her about removing the furniture two days after he had done it, and that she had advised him to confess to the whole business, and make it good.
It was testified that the furniture was sold to a second hand dealer in Los Angeles, Philip Sasmovsky, thus the agency of H. Raiden, a second hand dealer in Anaheim. Raiden, it is stated, told officers that he "sent the stuff to Los Angeles because he didn't have room for it in his store."
While Judge West was questing him, Allen said Raiden had urged him to sell the furniture even though it was not his. The price given for the lot was $225., of which Allen stated he was given $112. Raiden taking the rest. Raiden has previously alleged that he only got $20 for his commission in making the sale.
That sensational charges may develop against Raiden in connection with the case was indicated by Judge West's statement in court regarding the matter:
"If it is true that Raiden took his $112.50 as his part in the transaction, he is in reality nothing but Allen's partner in crime I should like to have him before me to find out more about the matter. Raiden must have known what he was doing. He had the stuff moved at night, and he never came forward with information until they traced the goods to him. I shall have the matter looked into."
The value of the furniture was stated in the complaint to be $500. Judge West has instructed that information be gathered as to the real value of the goods, in order to determine the amount Allen is to pay. He said that while $500 was probably a little high, he was sure from his knowledge of the methods of some second hand dealers that they planned to make at least 75 or 100 per cent on every transaction.

The alien land bill now before the people of this State is the first step to prevent the loss of economic control. Congress must put through the second step, by closing the door to the unassimilable immigrant; and the people the third step by amending the Constitution of the United States to the effect that no child born in this country of parents ineligible to citizenship shall be eligible to citizenship.

WHY I SHALL VOTE "YES"
ON THE CHIROPRACTIC
INITIATIVE MEASURE NO. 5
The first reason is because a few chiropractic treatments did me more good last winter than all the drugs I ever took.
I do not believe in letting a selfish medical organization or trust, if you please, take away from the people of California anything that is such a boon as the chiropractors' profession.
Undoubtedly there are a few chiropractors that are fakes, but I dare say where there is one, there are ten in the medical trust. Might does not make right, and medical freedom is as important as religious freedom, I say, let the people say what they want and let them have what they want as long as what they want is not harmful to them or anyone else.
The people of California have as much right to have chiropractic treatments as the people of other states, and have it done legally.
Do not be deceived by the false statements of the medical trust. Find out the truth of the situation for yourself.
The chiropractors have proven their science by the fact that out of 1000 cases of "flu" they were called upon to handle, they only lost one, where the medical profession lost 180 out of every 1000 cases.

I can tell you of people in this town that will swear by the chiropractor because they got help after years of useless and harmful drugging.

propractic Society.
I shall vote "yes" for the Chiropractic Initiative Measure No. 5 at the coming election. First of all is that I positively know of the great good they are doing, and of a number of persons who have been saved the danger, suffering and expense of an operation. When I think of the vast number of those unfortunates who might have been spared that awful ordeal had they but known, I feel like going out and telling the world what I know of chiropractors and their work.
I feel that we have a right to choose whom we shall have to treat us with just as much freedom as we choose our religions or our politics.
Another reason why I shall vote "yes" for the measure is that I live near a hospital and have brought to my observation the vast amount of operations performed these days. There is no doubt in my mind that many could be prevented did the people know more about the work and success of chiropractors. Other states have boards of chiropractors and have found it most satisfactory and there is no legitimate reason why California should be behind her sister states in doing what is best for her people.
The future holds great opportunities for chiropractic work and I shall vote for the measure to hasten the day when people will try the chiropractor first and submit to operations only when it is found nothing else will help.
I will vote for the measure because to me it is the most practical method of regaining and keeping health.

I will vote for the measure because to me it is the most practical method of regaining and keeping health.
I shall vote for it because I have been closely watching the work of Drs. Butler and Butler in our own little city and have seen the immense number of persons who have been cured of terrible afflictions by them.
Knowing of no earthly reason why I should vote against the measure I shall not only vote for it myself, but shall work very hard to get others to vote for it. Hoping the measure passes by a large majority, I am,
Sincerely yours,
