A POINT OF VIEW
By ALBERT ABBOTT
A Municipal Bus Line for Anaheim
To one first visiting Anaheim one of the outstanding features of the city is the large number of automobiles parked on its streets. More automobiles than one generally observes in a town the size of Anaheim.
Yet, after one is here a while it is soon discovered that there are many people who have "to foot" it to town, or depend upon the "charity ride."
Anaheim is now to a growth where it is in line for a local transportation enterprise.
A bus line after the order of Long Beach bus companies is about the idea I have in mind.
Many years ago before the "jitney" bus lines were popularly known I visited Fort Dodge, Iowa, and discovered that that town had a bus line that was a new feature to me in municipal transportation. If Anaheim would adopt, almost in its entirety, the idea of the municipal bus line I saw at that time operating in Fort Dodge, it would be just the thing for Anaheim.
Every day I see people coming from and going to the Santa Fe station and the Southern Pacific station burdened with hand baggage. The idea of a taxi service at the railroad stations seems to have been omitted from Anaheim life, for some reason or another that circumstances may have engineered.
Most every day I see residents strugling that a municipal bus line would serve very nicely.
It can be seen that a municipal bus line would be a public recognition that this city means to take care of its workers as a city should. It would also be a public announcement and demonstration to prospective manufacturers looking for a city in which to establish their factories that Anaheim is willing to cooperate with the manufacturers by doing its duty in the line of a transportation enterprise for the welfare and comfort of the "humble" worker.
If the chamber of commerce would get behind and boost this idea, the city fathers might place the plan before the people for approval.
The streets of Anaheim have the appearance of being businesslike. For a stranger to see a bus nicely painted with gold lettering: "Anaheim Municipal Bus Line," that stranger would be impressed with the businesslike city government that was so up-to-date to consider the "humble" citizen. The "humble" voter would feel that a political campaign is not all "bunk" when his virtues of being a "humble citizen" are shouted from the "stump." The stranger leaving Anaheim would tell of Anaheim's enterprise. Thus, a genuine advertisement for Anaheim would be in circulation. People like to talk and boost a city that does things for the inhabitants of that city. This age of "dare and do" applies to municipalities as well as to individualities.

Most every day I see residents struggling home with hands encumbered with small merchandise packages.
For the general happiness and welfare of the citizens of Anaheim, and for a display of municipal courtesy to incoming and outgoing visitors, I think it would be a splendid idea if the municipal government of Anaheim established a local bus line on its three prominent highways.
A line going east and west on Center street, the east terminal being way past the Santa Fe station and the west terminal being way past the high school, could be one line. The other line could be on Los Angeles' street, starting way south somewhere near the Edison plant (or farther if deemed best), going north on Los Angeles street to the junction of Lemon street and Los Angeles street, turning south on Lemon street to Broadway; east on Broadway to Los Angeles street, south on Los Angeles street to starting point. My idea in suggesting this line is to take in a sort of loop—Los Angeles, Lemon and Broadway streets making the loop boundary.
Transfers could be issued for use at the two connections, namely, East Center and North Los Angeles streets, the passengers to transfer north only; at West Center and South Lemon streets, the passengers to transfer south only.
Of course, the details of a proposition like this would, of necessity, have to be worked out after the idea was accepted as feasible and desirable. What I am doing is simply making the suggestion and touching upon the high lights of its operation.
The two lines could be so scheduled to have a bus at the stations when trains arrive and leave the center of the city to deliver passengers in time to make train connections. Printed schedules of the approximate time a bus would be approaching a street crossing the main highway could be printed and freely distributed.

"The Psychological Moment" for Anaheim
At the present period of the world's history the word "sugar" is a predominating one. A name of a thing always suggests names of other things. Sugar and Anaheim, right now, should be synonymous. Let me illustrate:
When the lowering world's sugar supply first began to become noticeable I was in Maseachusetts. Every time the subject came to my attention by the various means that it did, I always connected up the thought of sugar with Oxnard, California, and Hilo, Hawaiian Islands. Before the war was ever thought of I had visited those two places, and, of course, was ever conscious that sugar production was the chief business of the two towns mentioned.
The other day I first learned that there are five sugar factories in this county. The opportune time has arrived for the boosters of Orange county to let the world know it. Not necessarily that Orange county's factories will be able to supply the market that seems to be ever short, but to take advantage of "the psychological moment" to have people's minds think of Orange county, California, every time they think of sugar. Every time they think of sugar (and at present, it is almost continuously) they will realize that Orange county, California, is a mighty wonderful county because it has five sugar beet factories, in addition to raising the best oranges in the world. See the point?
There is nothing mysterious about advertising a thing. I know the advertising game. Here is a secret, Mr. Businessman, of the advertising game: Connect up the thought uppermost in the mind of the general public with your own business.
Sugar is a thought that is ever uppermost in the minds of the public all nine advertisement for Anaheim would be in circulation. People like to talk and boost a city that does things for the inhabitants of that city. This age of "dare and do" applies to municipalities as well as to individualities.

Printed schedules of the approximate time a bus would be approaching a street crossing the main highway could be printed and freely distributed.
My idea is a purely municipal enterprise, owned, controlled and operated by the municipal government of the city of Anaheim. Of course, the affair should pay expenses. If a ten-cent one way fare will be necessary, let it be ten cents. If a five-cent one way fare will pay expenses, let it be five cents. The idea is not so much to make money, but to be of service to the citizens and visitors within the city's boundaries.
A "jitney" Ford on each line could be a starter. If the "thing" "took," more cars and larger cars could be obtained. The idea is: "Where there is a will, there is a way." Chicago gets ahead because it has a municipal motto: "I will."
At "rush hours" more busses could be put on. The idea of this suggestion is not to compete with the two trans-county bus lines, but merely to serve local conditions.
Early in the morning there are all kinds of vehicles used to get the workers to their places of employment. These vehicles are furnished by the companies for whom these men work. If there were a bus line on the three highways as herein suggested, the companies' autos could meet the buses at the most convenient intersecting street or terminal. However, this phase of the "early birds" would be worked out as experience revealed the requirements. Then there is the getting home proposition of these work-

Sugar is a thought that is ever uppermost in the minds of the public all over the earth. So, if the chamber of commerce of Anaheim, in particular, will get behind a scheme to let the world know that Anaheim has a sugar factory, it will be doing a psychological stunt that will put Anaheim on the world's map. The consequence of this advertising campaign concentrated on this thought of sugar in such a way that people won't get the idea that Anaheim is a Moses to lead them to the sweetland, but to make use of the scientific fact of connecting up sugar and Anaheim in such a way that people will think of Anaheim whenever the occasion of sugar is before their attention, somewhat similar to the manner I have herein-before mentioned about my thought connecting up the then present public focus on sugar to Oxnard California and Hilo, Hawaiian Islands.
It will be remembered I said I had just learned that there are five sugar factories in Orange county. Now, from a boost standpoint, Orange county boosters should have made the fact so obvious to the world before this, that I would have known it long before coming to Anaheim. That's the way effective, scientific, psychological advertising works, and should work.
The affairs of the world have so manipulated themselves that Anaheim in particular (if the local chamber of commerce wants to make it particular) and Orange county in general can "get on the band wagon" and manipu-

There is nothing illegitimate in this. The emotions of the people are not being played upon. It's purely a case of understanding the scientific psychology of making use of the thought of the hour.
I have my own personal ideas of ways and means, but that is another story for another time, perhaps.
It's a big idea for the big men of the town. The town is getting big. Let's make it bigger. Is the chamber of commerce live enough and big enough to lead? The spirit of boost is all that is required to put over this idea.

Politics Have Changed
While in another county Monday a week ago I saw a political poster of a candidate announcing that he had been in two wars. Now, that's something I don't get. Why should politics be a game of rewards? When I first began to notice politics I learned that politicians were those fellows who had an ambition to serve the public. At least, to judge from the political campaign speeches that was the impression I got.
Those aspiring servants would tell of their abilities to serve the public. But nowadays it seems just the off my hat to the vision of the backers of the Orange County Plaindealer. Brother Contemporary, this is plain dealing, isn't it? Good luck to you, boys, good luck! May a republican or a democratic presidential candidate arise from the venture.
The Twenty-Third Sorrow
The Ford is my charlot.
I shall not walk.
It maketh me to lie down in wet places.
It destroyeth my patience.
It leadeth me into the deep waters.
It leadeth me into the paths of ridicule for its name's sake.
It prepareth a breakdown for me in the presence of mine enemies.
I will fear more evil when its with me.
Its rods and its shafts discomfort me.
It anointeth my face with oil.
Its water boileth over.
Surely to goodness, if Lizzie follow me all the days of my life,
I shall dwell in the house of the Nuts forever.
Rare Gems in Womankind
A couple of Sunday nights ago, coming to Fullerton on the electric train, two girls in the seat back of the one I occupied, were talking in an unusual manner.
They had been up on Mount Wilson. They were dressed in those khaki pantaloons (or pants suits, or whatever they are properly called).
One girl said to the other: "O-o-o! I'm so-o-tired. But it was just grand, grand! I can see it all now."
The other girl said: "Indeed it was reasonable.

THANK THE REPUBLICANS
It is stated with authority that 17,500,000 women will vote for the next president in thirty states.
Altogether in the United States there are 27,000,000 women of voting age.
The difference, 9,500,000, will vote if the nineteenth amendment is ratified in time.
Of the eighteen states where these 9,500,000 reside, ten are democratic and eight republican.
In the states where the 17,500,000 women will certainly vote, the normal popular majority is republican in two-thirds of them.
The republicans have nothing to lose and much to gain by hastening ratification of the nineteenth amendment. Already they have the support of a large majority of the 17,500,000 women, and will gain the support of at least one-third of the remaining 9,500,000 women.
The majority will be with the republicans undoubtedly.
To republican majorities in congress the 17,500,000 owe their right to vote.
To republican sympathy and support the 9,500,000 remaining women will owe the acquisition of their rights in case the nineteenth amendment is put through. Which state is the vehicle, is unimportant. Who finally crowns the right is still more unimportant. The only important matter is that the amendment is ratified and the 9,500,000 women given the right to vote for president this year.
Not the president who reluctantly comes in at the last moment after the battle practically has been won, but the man and the men who have been in the fight from the first and borne the brunt of the battle, are deserving of credit.

A Vision Being Realized
For a long time I have admired the steady working out of a vision of the Orange County Plaindealer. A couple of years ago I knew the Plaindealer to be a struggling tri-weekly newspaper. The powers that were behind it had a vision to try to make it a daily, instead of a "try-weakley." When I was in Anaheim about two years ago on a visit, I visited the Plaindealer institution and talked with one of the owners. In my brief observation and interview I then had the thought that the Plaindealer some day would be a daily newspaper in Anaheim. And a daily newspaper it now is. Steadily, without ostentation, it has worked its way into the daily field, and it seems to be "holding its own" in that field. It may be to the credit of the ambition of the management that it is making good, or it may be that Anaheim is big enough to support two daily newspapers. Personally, I think both factors enter into the success of the Plaindealer.
However, I am one of those who admire enterprise, who like to see others realize their ambitions. Being a newspaperman of many years' experience I probably was more able to "see behind the scenes" to realize what was going on, more than others would.
One may not believe it, but I take
I use to be told I was somewhat of a nature worshipper. I'll have to admit they have me a running to keep up with their charming descriptions of the wonder and beauties of God's handiwork.
I have traveled around a good deal. I have overheard thousands of conversations between young women. They all generally were insignificant, trifling, frivolous, flat and insincore. But, ah, these two young Fullerton business girls were certainly a revelation to me. I have always thought such creatures were only in old-time novels and in new-time motion pictures.
Now, I KNOW there are at least two in reality; two young women who can forget the present self and revert to the charm of being mindful of nature's wonders. (Did you get the word—mindFUL? The kind of stuff in one's mind makes all the difference in the world, with me.)
No, no, I didn't "butt in." Not me; I don't do that. What's more, I wouldn't have disturbed or intruded any outside thought into their reveries for the world.
No, no, they didn't stage their conversation to attract or entertain me. Not a bit of it. They were not that type of girls. They were absolutely oblivious as to who and what was in the car.
I am indeed very thankful some of my "hard" ideas against the "softer" sex has been splintered into smither-eens.
It certainly does the heart good to know that there are at least two young modern business women who are interested in other things other than "fleecing" a man.
"In spirit and in truth" I take my heart's hat off to the dreams of my novel-reading days.
Not the president who reluctantly comes in at the last moment after the battle practically has been won, but the man and the men who have been in the fight from the first and borne the brunt of the battle, are deserving of credit.
President Wilson and the democrats who are making this suffrage move in Tennessee, are playing politics. Senator Harding and the republicans who have been in the fight from the first, are responding to right, justice and principle.
Women promoters of suffrage will be just and give credit where credit belongs.

This draft covers Orange county’s quota for the Salvation Army drive held in May. The county was given a quota of $6000 as its share of the cost of maintaining rescue homes, industrial homes, orphans’ home and other institutions conducted in this state by the Salvation Army, and a quota of $1500 for the maintenance of the local Salvation Army corps, which gets a portion of its support from its store and salvage work.
The drive in this county conducted under the management and auspices of the two Elks lodges, Santa Ana and Anaheim, $7,802.06, of which $5,580.06 was banked through Santa Ana lodge and $2,222 through Anaheim lodge. There remains in the hands of the treasurer, G. E. Peters, $252.06 over and above the state and county quotas raised this year. In addition there is $63.15 left over from the 1919 drive, from which there was also $3,000 paid upon the Salvation Army’s lot on Syaamore street.
Inasmuch as many counties of the state were unable to raise their quotas this year, Orange county’s showing is cause for congratulation, which have already been officially extended by J. L. McNab, state chairman. Letters have been sent by the Orange county advisory board to the two Elks lodges expressing the deep appreciation of the advisory board for the very efficient and successful manner in which the two lodges managed the campaign.
