Mise MsPhee is a Santa Ana girl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George McPhee, 600 West Fifth street. McPhee is county sealer of weights and measures. And—whisper—Papa McPhee Several of her verses have had a large circulation in the east and her collected pieces now are being published by a large firm in Los Angeles. Miss McPhee is extremely popular in Santa Ana, and her many friends are highly pleased at her success. Her introduction to the quirks and turns of the grocery business came during the war. Male help was scarce, so she volunteered to drive a delivery wagon for George A. Edgar, Santa Ana grocer. She held this position for several months and "made good" with a vengeance, proving herself an adamant of its violation of the offering securities for the protection of others which are owed to offering their securityization. Texas has been strung of the law viola ment has information pany which is of Miss Muriel McPhee Displays Unusual Talent As Poetess Orange county has a poetess, Miss Muriel McPhee, who, although not yet 18 years of age, is acquiring a reputation as a brilliant writer. Mise MsPhee is a Santa Ana girl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George McPhee, 600 West Fifth street. McPhee is county sealer of weights and measures. And—whisper—Papa McPhee is a sproud as can be of daughter Muriel. Miss McPhee is a Santa Ana girl, the preparation of "ad" copy, containing alluring phrases designed to further the sale of cheeses, pickles and other such lowly sundries of the grocer's trade. Her avocation is verifying. It was while she was still in high school, that she began turning to poetry as a means of expressing herself. Miss McPhee will be eighteen years of age on June 3—which is apparently not telling tales out of school, for Papa McPhee himself told the date. Miss McPhee has been with the Los Angeles grocery firm for seven months, and is making an ever-increasing success of her work, as is indicated by the fact that she has had an exceptionally good offer from the publishers of a Los Angeles grocers' magazine to which she has contributed verse and prose from time to time. However, her father has decided it would be best for her were she to remain at her present position for a period. One of Miss McPhee's poems, "Mother o' Mine," has been purchased and copyrighted by a Los Angeles advertising concern, which is issuing it handsomely framed and decorated. She held this position for several months and "made good" with a vengeance, proving herself an adept at managing her Ford and at delivering groceries. EXTENDING THE WORK OF CONSERVING WATER Tri-Counties Committee Will Continue Work at Mouth of Canyon At the regular meeting of the Tri-Counties Reforestation Committee, which was held at the Nichewaug Hotel, Redlands, Thursday, the matter of the extension of the work of conserving water on the debris cone at the mouth of the Santa Ana canyon was discussed by many present and it was the unanimous opinion that the work should be extended during the coming summer. Members from San Bernardino expressed the opinion that if the matter were properly presented to the people of San Bernardino that they would cooperate financially for the extension of this work. It was pointed out by City Engineer Hinckley of Redlands that the raising of the water level by the spreading of this storm water had saved the people who are pumping in the vicinity of Redlands approximately $6,000 in cost of pumping during the irrigation season of 1919. This does not take into account the benefit that was derived from the use of water so obtained. Mr. Hinckley is an authority on this question as he has opportunity to observe the water levels in and about Redlands. As the whole amount contributed by the people of San Bernardino county for the irrigation season 1919 was only $100 the advantage of extending the work of conservation is apparent. The matter of securing the additional funds necessary is to be taken up by committees from the three counties in the near future. COMPANIES TO AVOID IN BUYING STOCK Commission of Corporations Endeavoring to Safeguard the Public Added to the list of oil companies offering securities in California in violation of the Blue Sky law is one which may be taken as a sort of consort to Bull Bayou King company, also an offender. The new one is Bull Bayou Queen of Louisiana, and, like most of these companies which endeavor to sell oil stocks without first qualifying under the laws of California, it makes extravagant promises of "safety," "action" and assured dividends." Commissioner of Corporation E. C. Bellows has notified the company of its violation of the California law in offering securities in this state, and for the protection of California investors he issued the following statement relative to the company and others which are offering or have been offering their securities without authorization. "While a number of the outlaw companies, which have been advertising the sale of their shares in California, AND THEY SAY By referring to the city clerk's annual report it will be seen that there was $8,077.84 less in the cash balance column on May 1 of this year than was on the same date a year previous; although it may also be noted that the increase in light and water revenues totals $11,292.40 during the year. All of which shows that the expenses of the city are increasing. An object lesson was taught on the streets here the other day. An eastside rancher, who, by the way, owns an orange grove, for which he has refused $5,000 per acre, came to town carrying a basket of eggs for the groceryman. Take care of the nickels—the dollars will look out for themselves. The city will soon have an ordinance hedging in pretty well the moving of houses, with a view to discouraging the shifting of shacks. Heretofore, some persons would move their buildings and apply for permits afterward. Some people in the upper valley are using adobe, in house building. This will be Jake if the profiteers do not get a corner on the mud. Better knock on wood. As a gentle reminder provision should be made for the proper housing of the city records and maps. Fire breaks out sometimes in the unexpected places. Back in the early '80's some sections in the Southland possessed a FIFTY "A dollar today buys only half increased in price except the door." Tomorrow, however, when tomorrow is going to be mighty, might. Then the dollar of today will mean that you have saved two dollars. Save today! Save while the dollar is easy to get. Saving is not a matter of salary abundance of determination to co-operate. You can start a savings account. The Anaheim Gazette Bellows has notified the company of its violation of the California law in offering securities in this state, and for the protection of California investors he issued the following statement relative to the company and others which are offering or have been offering their securities without authorization. "While a number of the outlaw companies, which have been advertising the sale of their shares in California through the medium of a San Francisco morning newspaper, have withdrawn their offers—probably because the investors of the state have beeded the warnings of this department—the people of this state should make certain that any company is not on the law-breaking list before risking their money on its shares. "Bull Bayou Queen is the latest company to enter the state with promises of riches on nominal investments. It is making a bid for the small investor, urging stock purchases of from $25 to $100 and promising that such investments "can perform wonders for your bank account." It is notorious that the "wonders" outlaw companies usually perform for bank accounts have the effect of indelibly inscribing "total loss" where the withdrawal entry is written. "Again I desire strenuously to caution the people of this state to avoid investing in the following companies: "Bull Bayou Queen Oil company, 328 Market street, Shreveport, La. "Bull Bayou King Oil company, same address, offered by Pelican Brokerage company. "Abner Davis, trustee Consolidated Syndicate. "T xas Atlantic Oil, by Texas National Trust company. "All offers of Steele & Co., brokers, Fort Worth, Texas. "Craven Oil and Refining company. "Texoil Refining company. "Toyah-Bell Oil company. "Texas Arizona Petroleum company." "Peerless Oil and Refining company. "Tri-State Oil company. "Congressional Oil company. "Congressional Sales company. "Attentions is invited to the fact that A. B. C. Oil company, Inc., of Texas, has been stricken from the list of the law violators. The department has information that this company which is offering only learns using advice in house building. This will be Jake if the profiteers do not get a corner on the mud. Better knock on wood. As a gentle reminder provision should be made for the proper housing of the city records and maps. Fire breaks out sometimes in the unexpected places. Back in the early '80's some sections in the Southland possessed a tinge of the wild and wooly west life and this city, to some extent, acquired the habit. A businessman was called forth to act as a peacemaker and serve as marshal. In a short time he had the rough necks eating out of his hand. He made a good officer. The city will pass an ordinance for bidding minors to enter a pool hall. When this adjunct is in connection with a bowling alley a railing or partition will seperate the two. Will the kids thus escape the "atmosphere"? As a money getter the no parking zone in a big city up the road is a humdinger. Funniest thing, the people always have to foot the bills, one way or another. A well-known citizen went out to sprinkle his lawn the morning of the fire at the Valencia hotel, and not knowing of the fire and likewise not aware of the high water pressure, proceeded to unroll the garden hose and turned on the water. At once the hose swiftly straightened out and the nozzle played a tattoo upon the earth, and before the water could be turned off the rubber tubing cavorted in a menacing manner. The citizen is of very temperate habits and while he was seeing things could not account for the freakish pranks of the hose until he heard of the fire. A recent executive session became somewhat tempestuous and the atmosphere coloric. There is many a slip twixt the cup and the lip. Report through the underground channel has it that a couple of local compatriots had been angling for one of the city offices, but didn't get a strike. This is a cold, cruel world! The city had a jimdandy payroll ceased and from all appearances it was believed the big well had made its great flow and would have to be put on the pump. On running in the tools for the purpose of cleaning out, the well came back with a 1500-barrel flow, which kept up for several days. The well has now settled down to 800 barrels and will probably maintain this output for some time. The Petroleum Midway is bailing and cleaning out No. 5 with the intention of getting it on production. The well is showing up exceptionally good and will probably make 500 barrels. The Petroleum Midway now has four producing wells on the Yarnell property and will have several more completed and producing in the next few weeks. The Amalgamated Oil company's Potter well at Richfield took a sudden and very decided drop in production. A week ago this well was doing 400 barrels and looked good for long time production. Without any known cause the well dropped to 150 barrels and refuses to make any more of a showing. The Amalgamated is drilling on the Yorba property and has No. 2 down 1708 feet. The Clark Oil company has decided to make an effort to shut the water out of the Wetzel well at Richfield and drill deeper. The Clark well is across the line from the Standard's Kramer and should be a producer in the lower sands. The Fullerton Oil company of Travis No. 2 struck a nice showing of oil at 2465 feet, the formation at this point being a sandy shale that seems to carry considerable oil. The General Petroleums Stern No. 1 has settled down to 250-barrel well and is pumping. At first this well came in with something of the appearance of gusher and caused a lot of excitement TO STABILIZE LIBERTY BONDS Immediate refund of the entire public debt of the nation for a period of fifty years in order to restore confidence in the financial transactions of the government is urged by representative Louis T. McFadden of Pennsylvania. Mr. McFadden is a member of the house committee on banking and currency and recently issued a statement in which he declared, "The refund should cover a sufficient amount of money to pay current war obligations that are still unsettled. The payment of outstanding treasury certificates, and the continuance of this emergency form of financing, which is simply living out of the income of tomorrow, should be stopped." Report through the underground channel has it that a couple of local compatriots had been angling for one of the city offices, but didn't get a strike. This is a cold, cruel world! The city had a jimdandy payroll this month. Look up the figgers. The city council has in view the employment of a new city marshal at a salary of $150 per month, while the present official, who is also constable, get $100. This increase in salary would amount to $600 per year. The fire chief says there are several veritable firetraps in the city. Those who are ambitious and desire to emulate the local fire chief in his clever ladder slide had better have a care unless said ladder has smooth stays. Splinteres are such troublesome things. Pictures of Hawaii have been shown here recently, among which were bathing scenes and the indelicate hulu hulu dance by nature beauties. As there are no restrictive laws regarding bathing suits on the island and as the clothing item is negligible, you may draw upon your imagination for the rest. The Richfield-Yorba Oil company met with its first real setback in the Richfield well a few days ago when a string of eight-inch pipe parted and left 250 feet in the hole. Numerous efforts were made to recover the pipe, but none were successful. The iron is now being milled up, a process that will delay the progress of the well considerably. The deepest wells drilling in the Richfield district are the Standard Kramer 2 wells. Kramer 2-5 is almost 3900 feet deep. Kramer 2-6 is com- of lands upon which grow the giant redwood trees that are not now protected within government preserves. It is planned to establish a national forest. Another bill passed by the hous* authorizes the interior department to exchange any public lands in California for lands now privately owned, within the boundaries of the Sierra National Forest. The purpose of the bill is to conserve national timber. SURPLUS FUNCTIONARIES appearances it was well had made its field well a few days ago when a string of eight-inch pipe parted and left 250 feet in the hole. Kramer 2-6 is completed at 4006 feet and is being prepared to bring in. Kramer 2-7 is 3300 feet deep and making hole rapidly. Wildcattling in the outskirts of the Richfield district is receiving a lot of encouragement. The Santa Ana canyon Oil company's Crowther well is 3200 feet deep and is showing a rather nice looking shale that is carrying considerable gas and strong colors of oil. The United Oil company's Carpenter, on the north side of the field, was cemented at 3000 feet, after encountering some very encouraging showings of oil. GREAT CITY OBLITERATED On every hand one is confronted with evidence of the inefficiency of the postal service, but from Denver comes an almost unbelievable story of official stupidity. A man in that city addressed a letter to a friend in Portland, Oregon. Eighteen days later it came back marked: "No such post office in state named." Again he tried, carefully typewriting the address, and after fifteen days it was again returned with the same legend. A third attempt was successful. PLANS TO SAVE GIANT REDWOODS The house of representatives has adopted a resolution directing the interior department to investigate and report on locations and costs of tracts SURPLUS FUNCTIONARIES There are still a hundred and two thousand government employees in Washington—all hanging on to their places with every ounce of pull and influence they can command. One of the hardest things congress has to do is to separate a public officeholder from his office. But this congress has slashed a billion dollars from the appropriations, and forty thousand of these extra employees will have to let go on July 1. Even then the government's payroll will be almost twice as large as it was before the war. It takes a long time to "close up the war work." Some of this work is legitimate, no doubt, but there is a lot of it that should be abandoned or condensed. Reduction of war taxation is the great need of the hour. It is the shortest and best path to an easing of economic conditions, to a decrease in the cost of living. The way to reduce taxes is to spend less money for government processes. And, since it is not to be expected that officeholders will voluntarily quit or that department chiefs will of their own accord cut down their forces or their estimates the job is up to congress. We need courageous men in congress to stand firmly against all waste and extravagance. The pressure is tremendous and it takes real men to withstand it.
