IN THE OIL FIELD (From Brea Progress) The daily production of the Southern California oil fields is at the lowest figure it has ever reached since last June. Six months ago daily output was 84,000 barrels. The output now according to the latest available figures 84,000 barrels. The output today according to the latest available figures is 80,200 barrels. With the production low, the development work is at its greatest height, there being 130 wells drilling. Nineteen new wells were located during the past month. Statistics covering the northern oil fields show some declines. The Midway-Sunset, the largest of the northern fields, shows a drop of a thousand barrels in the daily output, bringing the figure down from 88,000 to 87,000. The old line companies are starting new wells in the Brea field. The Brea Canyon Oil Company has No. 32, a new well, rigged up ready to spud in. The Columbia Oil Company has a new well on the Orange No. 7 about ready for drilling, and has started grading for a new location on the old Pico property. The Fullerton Oil Company is making a grade for No. 16, a new well at Brea. The Petroleum Midway Company is the fifth company of the twenty-five concerns now operating in the Richland Valley. No. 3, now drilling at 3000 feet, is beginning to look like a gusher, and officials of the company in the field believe that a well bigger than No. 1 will be brought in. The well is drilling in a very rich looking sandy shale and oil may spout over the crown block any day now. Preparations are being made to take care of a big well. In addition to No. 3, now almost completed, No. 4 shows 800 feet of hole, No. 5 is drilling at 2500 feet, rigs are up for Nos. 6, 7, and 8. A location for Chapman No. 9 was made a few days ago. At Morse No. 1 the Union Oil Company got a nice showing of oil a few days ago. The well is now standing cemented at 2188. Morse No. 2 has been located. The General Petrolum's Thompson No. 1 seems to have established a production of 200 barrels. The well has been in the best of condition for production now for a couple of weeks and has made this amount daily. While flowing by heads the well does not show any signs of increasing its output. Thompson No. 2 is drilling in the conglomerate at 835. Stern No. 1 is making hole in the same formation at 980, the work going slow, with the cone bits cutting the hard stuff. The Santa Ana Canyon Oil Company's Crowther No. 1 passed a successful test for water shut off at 2250 feet, and is now drilling again at 2300 feet. The 8-inch is going in the hole. The Fullerton Oil Company is making a grade for No. 16, a new well at Brea. The Petroleum Midway Company is the fifth company of the twenty-five concerns now operating in the Richfield-Kraemer district to bring in a oil well. On the Yarnell property the Petroleum-Midway's No. 1 completed at 3160 feet is flowing through the tubing and making 1000 barrels a day. The oil is 20 gravity and is carrying only 2 per cent foreign matter. The well is one of the most successful wells drilled in the new field, it being completed in six months' time and with few fishing jobs or any delays of any consequence. The work reflects much credit upon Tom Lloyd, field superintendent, and General Superintendent Davis, who have given the well the best of attention and direction since the work started. The Petroleum-Midway's well extends the Richfield district a mile east of the Union's Chapman well, making the intervening property look good. The Petroleum-Midway has the cement drilled out of Yarnell No. 2 and testing for water. No. 3 is drilling at 3250 feet in brown shale, No. 4 is making hole at 1250 feet, and No. 5 at 800 feet. No. 9 is a new well just spudded in and shows 400 feet. Yarnell No. 8 is a new well with the rig built and rigging up work started. After dropping down to as low as fifty barrels, the Amalgamated's Yorba No. 1 is coming back rapidly. A report from the well early in the week states that the well making 130 barrels. The initial output was 200. Soon after coming in it commenced to drop and got down to 50 barrels. The return to almost the original figure is somewhat of a surprise. The Amalgamated's Ibbitson is now making new hole in the brown shale at 3352. Potter No. 1 is drilling in the shale and boulders at 2467, and Breene No. 1 is still in the conglomerate, the last report being at 1349. The Santa Ana Canyon Oil Company's Crowther No. 1 passed a successful test for water shut off at 2250 feet, and is now drilling again at 2300 feet. The 8-inch is going in the hole. Bottom yater broke in on the Standard Oil Company's Kraemer 2-2 a couple of weeks ago. The well was re-cemented and a recent test shows most of the water shut off. The well is back on production, making 300 barrels daily. Kramer 2-1 is holding its own around 400 barrels. Hard and slow drilling characterized the Standard's work for the week on the four wells drilling on the lease. Kraemer 2-3 is drilling in hard sand at 935, 2-4 at 1745, 2-5 at 2100, 2-6 at 1425, and 2-7 at 685 feet. The formation in all of these wells is a very hard sand that yill allow only a few feet a day to be made, ragardless of the tools used or the speed in drilling. Completed at 4000 feet, the Standard has Murphy No. 64 on the beam pumping 115 barrels. No. 70 is drilling at 3360. No 71 is making hole at 3120 feet. No. 72 is drilling at 3300, and No. 73 is down 2926 feet. No. 74 is drilling at 1950, some 600 feet of hole being made during the past week. Nos. 75 and 76 are new locations grading for rig sites. FULLERTON MAKING DEMAND FOR MORE GAS Large Quantities Going to Waste that Could be Used in City. Why is it that with unlimited quantities of natural gas being wasted within sight of the city, local industrial plants are being notified that they can no longer depend on gas but must return to the use of oil? This is a question which is bothering a number of people just now and it is expected that an effort will be made to get an answer. The Clark Oil Company drilled out the cement plug at Hugo Wetzell No. 1 early in the week and a water test is now being made. With an O. K. on the water, the drilling will be resumed and the well rushed to completion. Drilling will start at 3300. The Fullerton Oil Company drilled 160 feet of hole in seven days with a Sharp & Hughes cone bit in the toughest and hardest of hard sand, struck in the field at Anaheim Union No. 1. The depth of the well is now 1772 feet. The Fullerton Oil Company has made a location for Travis No. 2, in spite of the fact that No. 1, drilled to 2360 feet, turned out to be a water well. Travis No. 1 is being cleaned out and put into condition to trace the incoming water. As soon as the water has been shut off the well will undergo another production test. The Getty Oil Company of Oklahoma has acquired twenty acres of property adjoining the Heffern interests on the west side and will start building a rig on the property in a few days. It is the intention of the new company, however, to await the outcome of the famous Heffern sand well before starting the actual drilling. The Union Oil Company's Chapman titles of natural gas being wasted within sight of the city, local industrial plants are being notified that they can no longer depend on gas but must return to the use of oil? This is a question which is bothering a number of people just now and it is expected that an effort will be made to get an answer. At dozens of oil wells almost within rifle shot of the heart of the city, great streams of gas are being burned and at night the oil fields surrounding the city look like a Fourth of July celebration. The State Railroad Commission has recently instituted an investigation of the entire Southern California natural gas situation and it is expected that its attention will be called to the local field and an effort made to see that Fullerton gets at least a portion of the advantages which should accrue from its location in the heart of the oil and gas belt. The natural gas which is so abundant, if it can be utilized, should be our greatest asset in securing industrial plants and there have been numerous inquiries along this line. The high price of sites has been a drawback but this can probably be offset if the gas is available. It is inconceivable that the commission will refuse to allow Fullerton to participate in its natural advantages and it is likely the matter will be brought before it in the near future. Still, you know, it isn't likely, even in the absence of a treaty of peace, that the German government will insist on our striping up our merchant ships like zebras or telling us just when and how we are going to sail 'em. ANAHEIM GAZETTE MEATLESS MEALS WITH LIMA BEANS SUBSTITUTE Some New Recipes for Preparing the Beans Given by Association. A series of 12 meatless menus with recipes has been issued by the California Lima Bean Growers Association, Oxnard. Manager Churchill of the association writes: "The menus and recipes were compiled and tested by the School of Domestic Arts and Science, Chicago. They are authentic and you will find them to be practical, workable, delicious and economical. Of course few people would want to do without meat entirely because meat is good food and its flavors are attractive. But meat is your largest food expense if you buy as the average woman does. The main food element in meat is protein. The same protein in lima beans costs from one-third to one-half as much. The flavors that you will find in these lima bean dishes are delightfully satisfying, in fact they will be an attractive change from meat flavors. Remember that the menus provide perfectly balanced meals. The fat that meat would supply is furnished in other foods included in the menus, as well as valuable mineral salts and carbohydrates." We reprint here four of the menus and other recipes: Cream of Lima Bean Soup—Crountons, Celery, Apple Tapioca Pudding-Lima Bean Soup serve very hot. Serves about five. Lima Bean Salad Mix equal quantities of baby lima beans and celery cut in one-quarter inch pieces. Scalloped Lima Beans Put a layer of boiled lima beans into a buttered baking dish, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Repeat, then add enough white sauce to cover. How he played the role of the good Samaritan and how he later was made the victim of an alleged robbery by the man he befriended was told at the office of the district attorney by A. R. Woodward, of Placentia. On the strength of a complaint on Ferguson to the home of the former's mother, a short distance from the building where he roomed, and the two men ate breakfast, it was alleged. Woodward's mother was said to have invited her son and Ferguson to return to her home for luncheon. The two men left for Fullerton. There, according to Woodward, Ferguson refused the invitation to luncheon, pleading pressure of another engagement. The two men parted. Later, when Woodward went to his room, he found that a suit of clothes and a pair of tan shoes had been stolen, Woodward said. Then Woodward came to the office of the district attorney and swore to a complaint charging Ferguson with burglary. Anaheim Gazette, per year, $1.50, payable in advance.
