Anaheim Gazette ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY ESTABLISHED 1870 Henry Kuhel, Editor and Proprietor SUBSCRIPTION PER YEAR ... $1.50 SIX MONTHS ... $1.00 THREE MONTHS ... $ .50 Entered at the Anaheim Postoffice as second-class matter THE INDICTMENT The indictment of William II of Hohenzollern, as it is proposed for inclusion in the peace treaty, charges him, not merely with an offense against criminal law, but with "a supreme offense against international morality and the sanctity of treaties." It is proposed that he shall be tried before a tribunal consisting of five judges, one appointed by each of the five great victorious powers, who shall determine the punishment which they shall deem fit to impose. So it should be. If it shall be argued that such a court would be composed of his enemies, the answer is that nowhere in the civilized world, save among those who were his co-partners in crime can there be found nations against which he has not offended, and from which could be drawn a tribunal absolutely without interest. Moreover, the allied and associated powers, framing the terms of peace, have the right to claim jurisdiction over the arch-plotter of the war, not merely as administrators of justice and executors of the law of humanity, but as the protectors of the peace of the future that the worlddy, not being injured by a temperature as low as 5° F. The greatest obstacle in the way of extension-of feijoa plantings at present is the lack of good stock. Seedlings are variable in productivity and shape, size, and quality of fruit. Grafted stock should be more plentiful in a few more seasons. The loquat is one of our neglected fruits. Experience in the last few years has shown that the fruit can be profitably grown if the right varieties are planted in a protected situation. The Thales, Champagne, and Advance are all good varieties for market on account of large size and uniformity of fruit. The tree blooms during the late fall and early winter, and must therefore be planted where the blossoms and fruit will escape frost injury. If carefully handled the fruit keeps and ships well even to distant markets, the wholesale prices ranging from a few cents up to 25 or even 30 cents a pound. The kaki, or Oriental persimmon, is a deciduous tree and is therefore not so liable to frost injury. Experience has shown that California grown trees are preferable to those imported from Japan on account of the former having a better root system. Trees propagated on the lotus (Diopyros lotus) are showing excellent results in the orchard; those on the American persimmon root are vigorous, but the stock has a tendency to sucker. Persimmon trees fruit well except in the very coldest sections of the state. The crop is earliest in the hot interior valleys, but later fruits grown along the coast are of excellent quality and are marketable to good advantage during November and December when other fresh fruits are not so plentiful. The Hachiya is leading in popularity for commercial plantings, while the Tane- Celtic tribes, for traces of them, the names of vow as Mainz and Vaintain first lifts of Celts are seen near before ton hordes from Europe. Bisby of the County Victory Loan Committee, has written the following letter of thanws to the newspapers of the county: Santa Ana, Calif., May 12, 1919. Dear Editor:— The war loans are over. And it was the intelligent co-operation of the news papers that put all these loans over. There is no line of business that I know of in the United States that has contributed more to the successful completion of the war than the newspapers. Not only have you given of your space, which is your stock in trade, but you have given of your intelligence and in many cases of your money. It is so easy to walk into the newspaper office with a story and tell them to run it, yet the man who takes this story in does not realize that when you run this story you are using up your stock in trade. The newspapers in Orange county have run many a story for me on the several different loans, and I wish that I might have some way of expressing to them my appreciation for their hearty co-operation. Words at best can only convey a part of what you wish to say; the best part must be understood, so I hope you will understand that back of this verbal expression there is a feeling of appreciation that cannot be expressed. Sincerely and gratefully thanking you, I remain Yours, R. L. BISBY, Congressman-elect Harry Barbour of Fresno, has aroused considerable interest in the prospect for California. The avocado industry is passing from the experimental stage into that of an assured success, at least in parts of Southern California. Large orchards are in bearing and fruits are being marketed in quantity. The question of varieties is still a critical one, but the list has been shortened to six or eight approved by the California Avocado Association. Avocado trees are not particular as to soil as long as drainage is good. They vary in their climatic requirements according to the race to which they belong. In general it can be said that so far as minimum temperatures are concerned trees of the Mexican race should thrive wherever the orange tree thrives, trees of the Guatemalan race wherever the lemon thrives, while trees of the tropical West Indian race can be grown only in the most protected and frost-free localities. The carob, or St. Johns Bread, like the loquat, blooms and sets fruit during the fall and winter. In order to insure a profitable crop, therefore, planting should be restricted to the foothill sections where frosts are not severe. Most carob trees produce male or female flowers only. Some varieties, however, bear perfect flowers, and such are preferable for commercial planting. The pods, produced in September and October, are rich in sugar and make excellent cattle feed. Date growing in a commercial way is restricted to parts of the Imperial and the Coachella valleys. The growth of the industry has been hampered by scarcity of desirable offshoots for planting. The variety Deglet Nur is in greatest demand as a confectionery date, while Thuri is being planted for a dry or bread date. SEMI-TROPICAL FRUITS In addition to citrus fruits, olives and figs, the following semi-tropical fruits are now being grown in California and are of sufficient importance to warrant commercial plantings: Pomegranate, feljao, loquat, Japanese persimon, avocado, carob and date. All these crops require irrigation. The pomegranate thrives in all the interior valleys of California, there being at present over 150 acres. The Wonderful is by far the best variety for market. The pomegranate bushes are resistant to alkali, but they cannot be expected to produce the best quality fruit on soils strongly alkaline. On account of the common habit of splitting, the fruit of most varieties of pomegranates must be picked before it is fully mature. The fruits continue to ripen well if placed in cold storage, and there they will keep in excellent condition for several months, becoming richer and more vinous in flavor and better in quality. Growers should pay especial attention to such products as bottled juice and syrup. The feljao is closely related to the guava, being sometimes known as the pineapple guava. The plants are harof the industry has been hampered by scarcity of desirable offshoots for planting. The variety Deglet Nur is in greatest demand as a confectionery date, while Thuri is being planted for a dry or bread date. TOO MANY BEANS Congressman-elect Harry Barbour of Fresno, has aroused considerable interest in the prospect for California to supply beans for money appropriated by congress in its relief program. He has exchanged wires with Watson S. Moore, secretary of the food administration grain corporation, and has been advised as follows: Your telegram regarding beans received. Some purchases of California beans were made to go on relief program for which congress appropriated funds. No purchases now being made of beans from any section. The advisability of providing for enlarged quota of beans in the relief program has been pressed on relief representatives abroad, but so far they have been unable to find place for quantity in excess of present program, which is small, and will not take care of more than present government stocks. Should place be found for more beans abroad we would immediately reflect it in purchases of beans, the major portion of which would have to come from California." Celtic tribes, for they have left many traces of themselves, amongst others the names of various great cities, such as Mainz and Worms. When the curtain first lifts on history, however, the Celts are seen retreating steadily westward before the upcoming of the Teuton hordes from the wilds of Central Europe. This movement probably began somewhere about the Fourth Century B. C., and it was not held up for any length of time until the advent of the Romans. Julius Caesar, however, stemmed the tide, and Augustus, who followed Caesar, in his great conquest in Gaul, quickly saw the strategic importance of the Rhine, and devoted himself, as did all his successors, to its fortification to the utmost extent. The result of the Roman occupation was that the left bank, or the Roman bank, developed enormously in its civilization, and to this day the traces of the Romans may be found everywhere thereabouts, in their wonderful roads, bridges and aqueducts, and the various other remains, as those to be found, for instance, at Trier. Ultimately, of course, when the Empire began to decline and the strength of the Roman positions on their frontiers was so reduced that they steadily yielded at various points to pressure from without, the Rhine land was quickly invaded by the Teutons, who, pressing downward into Gaul, overran the whole country. The river thus became a German river, and its valley, along with the rest of Gaul, sank into a condition of semi-barbarism, until its civilization was revived in the Eighth Century by Charlemagne, who had his seat of government at Aix-la-Chapelle. In the next reign, Charlemagne's dominions were divided, and the Rhine at first formed the boundary between Germany and the Middle Kingdom of taking these courses are marked men, marked because they have been chosen from thousands to be educated, fed, clothed and well paid. If interested in this line of work make application now to the nearest army recruiting officer. State your desire for enlistment in the Motor Transport Corps. You will be well paid while attending these schools and receive free food, clothing, quarters, medical and dental treatment and all training equipment. ANNUAL CONVENTION The Twentieth Annual Convention of the California Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teachers Associations will be held at Santa Cruz, May 27th, 28th and 29th, 1919, by invitation of the Santa Cruz Federation. The sessions will be held in the Grill Room of the Casino overlooking the wonderful beach, and the headquarters will be at the adjoining hotel Casa Del Rey. Much interest in the convention is being taken in all parts of the state. Teas, luncheons, entertainments, and pet animal shows are being held to raise money to send delegates. Sacramento will send at least one-third more delegates than last year. The program will deal with the prob- california's bumper crop According to the Monthly Bulletin of the California Development Board, California is to have a big crop of nearly everything this year, and at a time when larger production was never more greatly needed. The demand for California fruits already exceeds the prospective output and prices are soaring. Growers in Santa Clara County report that the prune crop promises to be a record one, while other crops will be fair to good. The prune trees in bearing this year are placed at 6-,000,000. While the apricot crop is estimated larger than last year, there will not be a full crop, owing to a heavy rain washing the pollen from the blossoms. Apricot and almond crops are generally good over Yolo copuny, although in some sections the fruit is falling. Oakdale, Stanislaus county, has a hundred per cent crop of almonds on its trees. Southern California walnut growers anticipate a twenty thousand ton crop. One hundred per cent on all fruit crops is reported from Sonoma county. The Gravenstein apples give indication of a heavy crop. The Imperial Valley conteloupes crop is reported as generally late. The stand was delayed by lack of hot weather which has but recently set in. Indications are that peaches, plums and apricots will all provide good crops in Kings and Tulare counties. The Delta section is planning for its biggest and best asparagus crop. There have been heavy losses of bees in most of the citrus and adjoin- sections of Southern California. passing into that in parts the orchards are being questioned of, but the six or eight Avocado are not as drain their cling to the general minimum and trees of arrive wheries, trees of ever the of the tropic be grown and frostBread, like fruit durin order to therefore, dated to the facts are not produce only. This service is the Motor Transport Corps, and offers unlimited possibilities for men of mechanical experience and men who desire to take up and learn along mechanical lines. There is no limit to what you can accomplish in this corps by applying yourself properly. This service should appeal to men who have had previous experience in the different branches of the automobile industry as well as to men who have had no experience along these lines. Certain courses of training have been outlined, particularly for men having had experience, and an extensive course of training has been prepared for those without experience. The purpose of the Army Transport Corps in training men is to produce for the army a highly skilled body of men, so skilled that upon their return to civil life they can rightly claim to be experts in their line.
