OIL FIELD NOTES
By ELLWOOD J. MUNGER
October opens with more locations made for new wells than any month of the entire year. Locations for the immediate commencement of drilling number ten wells. These locations are widely scattered throughout the entire field and when a few of these are completed new oil lands will be added to the already vast Southern California field.
Urged on by the great success that the Standard Oil Company has met with at Kraemer in the eastern end of the Brea field, other companies are about to commence operations. The Amalgamated Oil Company, the first to recognize the possibilities of the newly opened field, has begun operations on 300 acres just leased. A location has been made on the tract and lumber is being put on the ground for a rig.
At Newport the Liberty Petroleum pleased with the showing its initial test well is making, has made a location for a second well on a lease adjoining.
Montebello is well represented for new locations also. The Standard Oil Company has set stakes for three new wells in the Baldwin Hills, and the Union Oil Company has located its 11th well at La Merced.
The Standard Oil Company has made locations for three wells on properties adjoining the newly completed Kraemer well. The new locations are made on a line coming westward toward the center of the Brea field.
The biggest wild-cat move of the week is that of the Standard Oil Company in the leasing of 1,200 acres of Rancho La Clenega from Mrs. Anita Just north
ues to have its run of good luck. No. 10 is now drilling at 3,360 feet and will soon be making new hole.
At No. 11 drilling is making excellent progress at 3,321 feet. The Fullerton has been trying to make oil wells out of these two wells for the last three and six years, and things are looking more encouraging at the present time than ever before.
It seems that the failure of the Copa De Oro Oil Company to get oil in its Little Brea Canyon well has in no way dampened the enthusiasm of the Gold Seal management. The well has stood idle for three months on account of lack of capital to go ahead. It is understood that the needed capital is now available and that the drilling of the well will be resumed early in October. Some two thousand feet of hole was drilled previous to the shut down of three months ago. Some encouraging showings were noted before the two thousand mark was reached.
Pleased with the showing its initial well is making at Newport on the Irvine tract, the Liberty Petroleum Company has set a stake for its No. 2. The lumber and equipment are being put on the ground and the work will go ahead as rapidly as possible. No. 1, the first well to prove up this new field, is now on the beam producing at the rate of 125 barrels a day. On account of the low gravity of the oil it was found necessary to run a steam line down beside the tubing for the heating of the oil in order to facilitate the pumping of the fluid. The oil is about 12 gravity. Although a little low in gravity it will make good road and construction oil. It is said that the gasoline content of this oil is remarkably high considering its low gravity.
On account of having to drill up a shoe and a joint of pipe the Standard Oil Company's Newport well was unable to make any substantial gain in hole this week. The depth advanced also cemented, the depth At No. 23 drilling has reached feet where a good showing has been struck.
The Whittler field attains little attention early in the completion of White No. 52. The depth of the well is 2,735 feet. The well 200 barrels and looks like producer. Nos. 36 and 41 water tests. No. 51 is perft at 2,657 feet and is about on the beam. The well loosely 200 barrels. No. 54 stands at 2,356. No. 55 is drilling No. 56 is making hole at 37rying 8¼ inch pipe. No. at 1,900 feet. No. 58 is mented at 2,102 feet and lying with 2,813 feet of hole.
The busiest lease in field is located on the Stuphy property. Eleven struts are running and drilling in with all possible speed.
The deep well of the proper feet drilling has stopped; fordated pipe is now going Murphy No. 40 looks like No. 31 is testing for feet. No. 35 is drilling a being drilled now with pipe. The string is long shows and is requiring careful work in order a twist off and a bad fissure at 43 is drilling at 3,555 No. 47 at 3,410 and No. 49 has been cemented 50 is drilling at 3,192, or 2,519 feet. No. 53 was done 800 to 2,519 feet in a week sends some good time.
Most recent of the newly is rigging up for drilling.
After making a number Tri-State will cement its Habra well at 3,700 ft stand a week before puam beam for a final test.
The biggest wild-cat move of the week is that of the Standard Oil Company in the leasing of 1,200 acres of Rancho La Cienega from Mrs. Anita Baldwin. The property lies just north of Inglewood, and lumber is now being placed on the ground for a rig. Standard Oil geologists believe that the Inglewood property has a similar formation to that of the Montebello field.
Drilling operations in the southern field now number 125 wells. The production has advanced to the handsome figure of 71,386 barrels a day; 714 wells are making this production. A year ago the production was 43,485 barrels a day, with 680 wells producing. Thus it is observed that this great production increase was made through the addition of only 30 new wells. A year ago there were 83 wells drilling. Success in the development of oil thus far in the year 1918 has been remarkable. If every other industry gets into the game like the oil business the Kaiser won't last long.
The Amalgamated Oil Company has located a well on its newly acquired lease property west of the Standard Oil Company's Kraemer and will begin drilling as soon as the derrick is up and the rigging-up work completed. The new well will be known as Ibbitson No. 1. The Ibbitson property comprises some 150 acres and is regarded as very choice. The Amalgamated has also leased the Halladay property adjoining. Work will commence on this property next.
At Brea the Amalgamated has Anaheim Union No. 42 drilling at 3,150 feet. The formation is brown shale, showing lots of oil and gas. The 6½ inch casing is still being carried. No. 42 looks like the last big well the Amalgamated will get on the Anaheim Union Water Company's lease. The drilling of wells and the gradual releasing of the gas pressure has greatly reduced the chances of bringing in any more gushers in this field.
The Brea Canyon Oil Company spudded in today at No. 31 and drilling with the rotary is making splendid time. No. 29, a well finished two weeks ago at a depth of 4,130 feet, is flowing at the rate of 700 barrels a day. The pressure continues to stand high.
On line down beside the tubing for the heating of the oil in order to facilitate the pumping of the fluid.
The depth advanced a couple of feet and at 3,085 the formation is a hard sand with no indications of oil worth mentioning. It begins to appear that the oil sand is deep in this part of the field and it will be necessary to go 4,000 feet before a good well is struck.
The McGinley Oil Company is bailing its No. 3. At a depth of 3,190 feet the well began showing oil and gas strong and has led its owners to believe that it had gusher possibilities. At 3,250 the well continued to look even better and the present bailing and testing out is being awaited with interest.
The Olinda Land Company's No. 21, the most easterly wild-cat well now drilling in the Brea and Olinda fields, has struck hard conglomerate at 1,600 feet, making the drilling work go slow. If under this conglomerate the shell formation is struck, it is almost certain to say that the oil sand will be next and probably at a depth of 3,000 feet. This well was located by one of the foremost geologists in the state and will do the science great credit if a big well is brought in. No. 19, drilling in the proven area of the Olinda Land Company's holdings, is drilling t 2,900 feet and showing plenty of oil and gas.
Satisfied that the Kraemer tract and adjoining property has great possibilities, the Standard Oil Company has made locations for three new wells in the Brea field. Kraemer No. 2, Lock No. 1, and Anaheim Union Water Company 1, are the designations of the new ones. Kraemer No. 1 is now making close to 150 barrels of oil daily and it is believed that this figure will be increased as the well gets down to normal conditions. This is considered excellent results for wild-cat territory. The well was drilled in a little over two months and did not cost very much money or material.
On the famous Temple property one of the biggest producers for its size in the southern field, the Standard Oil Company has made a location for well No. 9. No. 6 came in a week ago line down beside the tubing for the heating of the oil in order to facilitate the pumping of the fluid. The oil is about 12 gravity. Although a little low in gravity it will make good road and construction oil. It is said that the gasoline content of this oil is remarkably high considering its low gravity.

Besides the saving boilers and steam engines moved and set up at for further development The Union Oil Company tanchury well No. 5 in hard luck.A feet a string of tools month of fishing has them.Drilling along now begun in the ho w will fall over into they can be flashed on ing was noted in th e loss of the tools ment is anxious to p rived out and put on th e drilling in the blue o n as yet shows no At the comparative 1,685 feetthe Petro
Amalgamated will get on the Amazon Union Water Company's lease.
The pressure continues to stand at 700 pounds and the big well looks like a long liver. The redrilling of No. 28 is going nicely at 2,115 feet. This well a year ago was making 450 barrels a day when a formation movement cut off three strings of pipe and ruined the well. Redrilling commenced at 1,700 feet.
The Columbia Oil Company have No. 8 on the Puenta Hill completed and ready to bring in. The well is 4,250 feet deep and looked like a big well from 4,000 feet on. No. 7 has landed a string of 8¼ casing at 2,600. Drilling is going along nicely. In the Olinda field two wells are being drilled by the Columbia. No. 28 is drilling at 3,100, and No. 31 is making hole at 2,650.
The Copa De Oro Oil Company has fully decided on abandoning its test well here and commenced the work of pulling out all pipe and salvaging as much of the drilling material as possible. A deal is on with the Union Oil Company for the purchase of the casing and drilling tools.
There is a rumor that a new company may be organized later to develop other portions of the property held by the Copa De Oro. The work of the Copa De Oro represents two years and the expenditure of $100,000 in cold cash.
The Fullerton Oil Company contin-
also cemented, the depth being 1,990.
At No. 23 drilling has reached 2,356 feet where a good showing of oil sand has been struck.
The Whittler field attaracted some little attention early in the week due to the completion of Whittler Coyote No. 52. The depth of the completed well is 2,735 feet. The well is making 200 barrels and looks like a steady producer. Nos. 36 and 41 are making water tests. No. 51 is perforating pipe at 2,657 feet and is about ready to go on the beam. The well looks good for 200 barrels. No. 54 stands cemented at 2,356. No. 55 is drilling at 2,140. No. 56 is making hole at 3,552 and carrying 8¼ inch pipe. No. 57 is drilling at 1,900 feet. No. 58 is standing cemented at 2,102 feet and No. 59 is drilling with 2,813 feet of hole.
The busiest lease in the southern field is located on the Standard's Murphy property. Eleven strings of tools are running and drilling is going ahead with all possible speed. No. 40 is now the deep well of the property. At 4,384 feet drilling has stopped and the perforated pipe is now going in the hole. Murphy No. 40 looks like a big well.
No. 31 is testing for water at 4,000 feet. No. 35 is drilling at 3,663 and is being drilled now with 3-inch rotary pipe. The string is long as the depth shows and is requiring some special and careful work in order to prevent a twist off and a bad fishing job. No. 43 is drilling'at 3,555, No. 46 at 4,003, No. 47 at 3,410 and No. 48 at 3,391. No. 49 has been cemented at 3,317. No. 50 is drilling at 3,192, and No. 53 at 2,519 feet. No. 53 was drilled from 1,800 to 2,519 feet in a week, and represents some good time. No. 54, the most recent of the newly located wells is rigging up for drilling.
After making a number of tests the Tri-State will cement its mile deep La Habra well at 3,700 feet and let it stand a week before putting it on the beam for a final test. Drilling was also cemented, the depth being 1,990.

No.
Drilling was commenced on this well in 1911, and at one time it reached a depth of 5,595 feet. Tests were made from time to time until the present test depth of 3,700 was reached. The stockholders and owners are looking forward to getting a little production at this point to off-set the great expense of the deep test well.
The Union Oil Company, in keeping with the government's policy to save man power, machinery, boilers and fuel, has installed a number of electric motors for the pumping of its producing wells on the La Merced lease in the Montebello field. By the installation of these electric motors electricity, a power produced by water, is being used, thus saving the oil and gas and eliminating the use of the gas engines, the steam engines and boilers as heretofore. The move is intensely patriotic and deserves recognition. Electric motor pumping will allow a larger number of wells to be looked after by a smaller force of men. More oil will be produced by the steady motion of the unseen power. Bollers using 20,000 cubic feet of gas daily to pump a well are replaced by the electric motor running on the current at a few cents per kilowatt. The saving in the one item of fuel is immense. Besides the saving of the fuel the boilers and steam engines can be removed and set up at new drilling wells for further development work.
The Union Oil Company's deep Basanchury well No. 5 continues to play in the hard luck. At a depth of 4,738 feet a string of tools were lost. A month of fishing has failed to dislodge them. Drilling alongside the tools has now begun in the hope that the tools will fall over into the new hole where they can be fished out. A good showing was noted in the well previous to the loss of the tools and the management is anxious to get the hole cleaned out and put on the beam. No. 6 is drilling in the blue shale at 4,215 feet and as yet shows no signs of oil.
At the comparative shallow depth of 1,685 feet the Petroleum Development tempting morsel of food. Let the hen hatch the chix, then give them to the capon to bring up; this will occupy his time and "Biddy" can get back to egg laying.
Seventh—They make good pets for the children. Their disposition is so mild and gentle that a child can pass many a happy hour with them. I really believe they could be trained to do anything a child wishes them to; anyway, they are a delight to have about.
Eighth—They are not heavy eaters. Although kept for 10 months and weighing 10 or more pounds, they will not eat any more than a 5-pound hen. A rooster will eat twice as much, weigh one-half as much and bring one-fourth as much on the market. Every mouthful eaten by a capon goes to build frame and flesh.
Ninth—They please the "esthetic" sense by their grace and beauty. Their plumage is long and soft and the sheen and fluff of a pure-bred comes out in fine effect on the capon. He walks with dignity and carries himself as an aristocrat. He does not strut or hurry, neither does he gobble his food or walk over the birds.
RECOMMENDED MAZDA LAMPS
Decision to discontinue immediately the sale of carbon and gem filament lamps in favor of Mazda lamps, which give an equal amount of light with a two-thirds saving of electric current, was reached at a meeting held at the St. Francis hotel by the Edison Lamp Works of the General Electric Company, and electrical dealers and contractors from various California cities.
Lamp manufacturers and agents throughout the state are co-operating with the United States fuel administration in the conservation of electric energy.
F. D. Fagan, district sales manager of the Edison Lamp Works, explained to the meeting that the fuel administration at Washington had recommended that every lamp salesman endeavor to discourage the use of carbon and gem filament lamps. The elimination of this lamp, he said, would result in a saving of electric energy in the state of 20,000 horsepower, with no decrease in the amount of light received by the consumer.
Distributors of incandescent lamps in California will meet at an early date with State Fuel Administrator Albert E. Schwabacher for the purpose of deciding upon additional conservation measures.
Sixty-Five Million People of Central Europe Unite for Protection
Representatives of oppressed nationalities met at Washington Thursday to form a mid-European Federation to include subject peoples now living under the shadow of Teutonic domination.
Those represented included:
Czecho-Slovakis, Poles, Ukrainians, Jugo-Slavs, Lithuanians, Finns, Rumanians and Italian Irridentists—65,000,000 people now largely without self-government and political freedom.
Resolutions demanding the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian empire and formation of a mid-European Federation were to be adopted.
The representatives intend to offer the entire morale and the resources of their countrymen in Europe to the cause of the Allies.
Erection of a barrier across the heart of Europe to serve as a wall against German aggression is the immediate aim of the mid-European Federation. It will seek to organize a political, military and economic wall along the eastern frontier of Germany.
Forces in America and Europe are to be co-ordinated to this end, it is declared.
The purpose of the federation was outlined at the opening of the conference by Professor H. A. Miller, delegated by the American government to undertake its organization.
"Never before in history have the national leaders of the eight nationalities here represented been gathered together in the unanimous purpose of working out a constructive political program for 65,000,000 people living in territory extending from the Arctic Ocean to the Black and Adriatic seas," Professor Miller said. "It is birth of the federation of states, without which there can be no permanent..."

At the comparative shallow depth of 1,685 feet the Petroleum Development Company drilling in the old Olinda field, has put on the beam No. 85 and the well is doing 250 barrels of nice clean oil. This is quite a wonder well when the depth, time of drilling, and cost are all considered. Petroleum Development Company's well seldom fall off very much in production after going on the beam. An old well not far from the one just brought in has been making its 400 barrels for the past 14 years. No. 3 is rigging up. No. 2 is drilling in the conglomerate at 884 feet." At No. 41, a redrill, the cement is being drilled out. No. 87 is drilling in the conglomerate and going a little slow at 1,150 feet. Nos. 87 and 83 are rigging up for drilling.
CAPONS
Few people realize the opportunity of raising a Leghorn chicken to the size of 6 or 7 pounds and one of heavy breeding to the size of 12 or 15 pounds. At the Southern California fair in Riverside this week Mrs. H. Ament will lecture and demonstrate the value of caponizing. There are many points in favor of capons.
First—They are the finest eating. The meat of a capon is delicate, juicy and sweet; it has no equal for flavor
CONDITIONS IMPROVING IN SOUTHERN REPUBLIC
Former Consul Declares Mexican Government Is Not Pro-German
German propaganda in Mexico is weakening, both from lack of funds and lack of results, according to observations recently made in the southern republic by Louis Hostetter, former American consul at Hermosillo, who passed through Los Angeles en route to San Francisco.
In a personal interview, Mr. Hostetter stated that he was assured by President Carranza that the assertion that he is or has been pro-German is without foundation. President Carranza declared, Mr. Hostetter stated, that his object is to rehabilitate Mexico and to give the Mexican people a better opportunity to improve their condition than they have had before. To attempt to get help in this work of restoration from Germany, he said, would be folly. He declared that he had not given any special privileges to German people and is in no way pro-German; that he believes neutrality is advisable, if the work of rehabilitating Mexican industries is to be carried on successfully, but that if the Mexican government cannot remain gated by the American government to undertake its organization.
"Never before in history have the national leaders of the eight nationalities here represented been gathered together in the unanimous purpose of working out a constructive political program for 65,000,000 people living in territory extending from the Arctic Ocean to the Black and Adriatic seas," Professor Miller said. "It is the birth of the federation of states, without which there can be no permanent peace."
WILL ANAHEIM BE ONE?
The net cities of the Twelfth Federal Reserve district which most evince the American fighting spirit in the Fourth Liberty Loan drive are to have tanks in action on the battlefront named after them.
This badge of honor has been definitely agreed to by the War Department at the request of Secretary McAdoo, as head of the Fourth Liberty Loan campaign, it is announced by George A. VanSmith, director of publicity for the Twelfth Federal Reserve district.
It seems that each of the ten cities of the West which most signally distinguish themselves in over-subscribing their quotas of the Fourth Liberty Loan will have its name carried through the Hun ranks as a tank smashes its way across the trenches.
No more effective means could have been devised to carry to the men at the front message that America is backing them up to the limit.
To have its name printed on the sides of one of these fighting monsters, under such restrictions, should be a high reward for the patriotic efforts of any community.
