COUNTY W.C.T.U. HOLDS ANNUAL SESSION PLEDGES ITS SUPPORT TO HON. WALTER EDEN IN HIS CANDIDACY FOR ASSEMBLY MRS. L. C. YEOMAN IS RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE ORGANIZATION The annual meeting of the Orange county W. C. T. U. was held at Garden Grove Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. Little business was transacted Tuesday, the principal session being held Wednesday. The morning was spent with reports of committees, superintendents etc., and election of county officers. The ladies of the Garden Grove W. C. T. U. served a bountiful hot dinner in the church dining room, which was much appreciated. Mrs. Elizabeth Mills led a very touching memorial service. Six members have passed to the better land during the past year. Mrs. Estella Harper and daughter Mildred sang "Moment by Moment" and a ladies' quartet from Santa Ana composed of Mmes. Chapman, O'Brien, Hayes and Nelson sang two patriotic numbers. Walter Eden, candidate for assemblyman from Orange county, gave a fine address to the convention, convincing all who heard him that he was the man that would stand right on all temperance and moral questions which their quotas or have oversubscribed their quotas to some extent. I requested three billion as the minimum the government ought to have with the hope and expectation that it would be largely oversubscribed and that every Liberty loan committee would exert itself to secure the largest possible oversubscription. I hope the Liberty loan committee will energetically continue the campaign until its close in order to secure not only the success of the loan as a whole and the largest possible oversubscription but also the greatest possible number of individual buyers. When America's sons are now actually fighting on the battle fronts in France and will not stop fighting until the victory for liberty is won no Liberty loan committee can stop fighting for an over subscriptions for the Liberty loan until the campaign closes May fourth. If we stop fighting when we have reached the minimum of the Liberty loan we are not comparably sustaining our sons in France who are fighting not for the minimum but for the maximum of America's rights and world's liberty." McKee, chairman of the Southern California Liberty loan state central committee is in receipt of the following telegram from Wm. G. McAdoo, secretary of the treasury of the United States: "I learn with deep regret that there is a disposition on the part of the Liberty loan organizations in various parts of the country to discontinue their efforts after they have reached The Standard started the week at Montebello by locating a new well and commencing work on three other wells already located. No. 4 drilled to 3350 is being put on the beam for a pumping test. No. 5 is testing for water at 1770. No. 7 is being rigged for drilling and will start in a few days. No. 8 is drilling at 3031. No. 9 is testing for water at 2135. No. 10 has been cemented at 2227 with the 8½ casing landed. No. 11 is also cemented, a string of 10 inch being set at 2771. No. 12 is drilling at 1941. No. 13 is standing cemented at 2218. No. 14 is building rig. No. 15 is rigging up for the rotary. No. 16 is drilling and has 770 feet of rotary hole made in less than a week. No. 17 is located, the material for the rig is on the ground. No. 18 is the latest location. The good success that attended the Standard in the drilling and putting fishing at less than No. 10 has been owed arly. No. 11 has been 760 feet and No. 12 a new location. Drilling by the Standard Oil Co. on the Kraemer tract is bringing splendid results. In the two weeks of drilling 1550 feet of hole has been made. The formation thus far has been of such a nature that little trouble is expected as greater depth is drilled. At 1550 the formation reported is shale and boulders. The progress of the Kraemer well is being closely watched as success here will mean the opening up of a big new field east of Brea. Rig building is now underway at the new location. No. 4 is drilling at 2333. No. 5 is making hole at 2570. Oil operators everywhere in the state will be greatly interested in the latest move of the Standard in its untiring and ceaseless quest for oil. The oil correspondent thru the courtesy of the company has been given the information that the big company has leased a tract of land from the Irvine Ranch Co. and will begin the drilling of a well near the beach town of Balboa. The oil possibilities of the locality have been regarded as very favorable and the success of the Standard in the new field is believed to be assured. Material for Irvine No. 1 is being hauled to the location and drilling will commence as soon as possible. It wa sthe Standard that showed the oil operators the possibilities of Montebello, and it may be that the second act of the wonderful development drama that the Standard has played during the past year will be staged on the great Irvine tract. The Union company is going right ahead with development work as fast as careful and successful work will allow, having 18 strings of tools running and 350 men at work in the Brea and Montebello fields. After drilling thru some 1400 feet of almost continuous conglomerate and leaving this hard formation at close to 2000 feet the drill shows the old formation re-appearing at 2450 and is holding back the drilling progress of the well to five and six feet a day. However it is not though that the second conglomerate stratum will continue very far. However it is not though that the second conglomerate stratum will continue very far. In a strenuous effort to bring the output of the Graham Loftus lease up to the highest possible standard the Union is beginning a redrilling campaign for wells that are in need of redrilling and cleaning out. In this manner G. & L. No. 15 has started redrilling. No. 43 is drilling on pipe at 3305. No. 49 is redrilling at 1657. No. 51 I salso redrilling and now has 1231 of redrilled hole. On the La Merced lease the Union has located well No. 8, and a force of men are at work building rig and making ready for immediate drilling. No. 2 has been cemented at 2329. No. 4 is drilling at 2610 in the oil sand and is looking very good. No. 6 has 2780 feet of hole. On the Slaughter property at Montebello the Union is starting the drilling of the lease's initial well and it now shows some 300 feet of hole. The formation of Stearns No. 55 has changed from boulders to blue shale. The change took place after rleaving 700 feet and since the progress of the drilling has been very marked. After drilling Valley View No. 1 in the Montebello field to 1400 feet the well has been cemented and will be allowed to stand for a couple of weeks. On the Naranjal property of the Union adjoining the old Olinda field the Union has four wells drilling, one temporarily shut down and a well standing cemented. No. 8 is drilling in the blue shale at 3194. No. 9 is fishing at less than 1000 feet for fools. No. 10 has been closed down temporarily. No. 11 has been cemented at 760 feet and No. 12 is drilling at 1072. Kam- ONE PER CENT CLUB ELECTS ITS OFFICERS Amalgamated Employees Will Contribute Monthly to War Fund At a meeting of the employees of the Amalgamated Oil company held on the lease last week, Messrs. Kammerer, Grinell and Bardeen were elected officers of the One Per Cent club, the club organized early in March, by which the employees agree to contribute one per cent of their earnings to a fund for the boys "over there." This organization was probably the first of its kind, and the good example set has been followed by employees of many corporations. At the meeting last week both Mr. Kammerer and Mr. Grinell spoke on the objects and merits of the organization, and before the meeting closed many of the boys expressed themselves as ready and willing to give 2, 4 or 5 per cent of their earnings if need be. Mr. Grinell, who has been working a double shift since the loan drive, said he feels well repaid for his efforts, and reported that with but one or two exceptions every man had taken at least a $50 bond, and he added that buying of Liberty bonds can hardly be "o-Verdun" just now, probably having in mind that war-stricken city in France, Verdun, when he used the expression. In his talk Mr. Kammerer, said that if every wage earner in the United States would give one per cent of his earnings to the cause there would be no such burg as Von Hindenburg.
