The Weekly Gazette. ESTABLISHED 1870 Henry Kuchel, Editor and Proprietor SUBSCRIPTION PER YEAR ... $1.50 SIX MONTHS ... $1.00 THREE MONTHS ... $ .50 Entered at the Anaheim Postoffice as second-class matter GERMANS DISCHARGED Because of the kaiser's insidious spy system which covers every nook and corner of the world, thousands of soldier boys were discharged from the army cantonments and camps last week. All of German descent who had blood relatives in Germany, were dismissed from the army. At Camp Kearny more than a hundred men were dismissed over their protest and their declaration that they were loyal Americans and wanted to fight for the flag. Many shed tears, but the order was peremptory, and they were compelled to go. One man, cadet of an Austrian noble family, a California university student, declared he would be forever ostracized, as his dismissal stamped him as "a man without a country." Many of the men pleaded not to be discharged and declared that they would do anything to prove their loyalty. These men, say some army authorities, are in an unfortunate position. They are neither here nor there. No end of argument would be sufficient to show that they actually would prove true blue under the trying circumstance of firing ball cartridges at some relation in the German trenches. SUIT AND CLOAK HOUSE TRANSACTING BUSINESS OIL-FIELD NOTES By ELLWOOD J. MUNGER The month of March is starting off very brisk among the oil operators developing in the great Southern field. A year ago there were 73 wells drilling in the field, the number of producing wells was 672 and the daily average output of these wells was a little better than 47,000 bbls. Today there are 105 wells drilling, the number of producing wells has been increased to 106, and the daily output is better than 55,000 bbls. The quality of the oil now produced is considerably better than a year ago and is accounted for by the big increase in production of the famous Murphy property and the newly opened field at Montebello. Wells on the Murphy lease are being brought in with a production of from one to four thousand daily, and the Montebello district is making about 10,000 bbls. of high gravity oil. Wild catting is at its greatest height at the present time in the Southern field. Every conceivable corner of the Southland is being sought out for oil and the pioneering is not being left to newly organized companies, but a large number of the largest operators in the Southern part of the state are taking a hand in the work. The Union Oil Co. has two wild cat wells drilling and are about to start a third. The Standard is busy drilling wells in new territory. The Amalgamated has wells at Huntington and Conner and Durfee that are to show up a vast new area for better or worse. This reaching out of the big companies and the scores of smaller concerns who are making a feverish quest for the black liquid wealth are doing the work in the face of the highest prices ever paid for oil well supplies and are doubt drill anno late future. T of the pioneer the Pomona va ed a number o SUIT AND CLOAK HOUSE TRANSACTING BUSINESS Bon Marche Opened Its Doors to the Public Tuesday Morning The Bon Marche Cloak and Suit house opened its doors for business in the Mitchell building Tuesday. As the day chanced to be a stormy one confining the people generally to their homes, many were prevented from inspecting the splendid line of ladies' ware on exhibition. The management therefore announces that the prices advertised for the opening day will also prevail Thursday and Friday of this week. The Bon Marche comes to Anaheim from Long Beach where the proprietors have been conducting a large establishment. That this is to be a permanent business is indicated by the fact that a five-year lease has been signed with Mr. Mitchell, the owner of the building. A high class of ladies' wear will be carried in stock. All the latest modes will be seen here simultaneously with their appearance in the cities. EBELL CELEBRATES RECIPROCITY DAY Guests From Every Woman's Club in The County Entertained by Local Society Reciprocity day by the Anaheim Ebell club on Monday was a brilliant success in every way. The luncheon was delicious, the program excellent, and all of the prominent club women of the county were present, including the presidents of each club in the county, Orange county Federation president and all officers of the county federation, and all of the state and district chairmen in the county. The meeting was called to order in the Grand Theatre at 11 o'clock by Mrs. Ida Dutton, president of the local club and business reports of the various clubs in the county were given. Mrs. A. J. Lawton of Santa Ana gave an interesting address on "Conservation." It is understood that the acreage leased around and in the vicinity of the Montebello district calls for the commencement of drilling of not less than 126 wells during the next 90 days. This is a tremendous amount of development work to be started in such a short time, but unless these wells are started the holders of the leases will lose control of the properties. With the present scarcity of drilling materials and the inability to get deliveries on pipe and casing it begins to look as though a large number of the leases will be surrendered unless different arrangements can be made to hold them. Many farmers in the district are realizing handsome sums from bonuses being paid by the persons and corporations holding the leases. A great deal of this money will be lost to operators unless the wells can be started. Undoubtedly a number of new leases will be arranged for at the expiration of the 90 days. The Amalgamated Oil Co. drilling at Huntington have reached a depth of 3200 feet and at this depth strong colors and oil showings continue to lend a great deal of encouragement to the drilling of the well. It seems that the oil bearing sand is deep in the Huntington district and a depth of 3400 will be perhaps necessary before the rich oil sand is obtained. The condition of the well is good with the 8 inch casing still being carried. At Durfee east of Montebello the company's wild cat well is down 1064 with the rotary making excellent headway. In the Brea field the Amalgamated report a very successful week. On the Hualde property No. 2 is drilling in the oil sand at 3487 and is showing up very nicely. No. 5 has been cemented at 2523. On the Anaheim property No. 42 is rigged up and ready for drilling. The Union Oil Co. has two wild cat wells drilling and are about to start a third. The Standard is busy drilling wells in new territory. The Amalgamated has wells at Huntington and Conner and Durfee that are to show up a vast new area for better or worse. This reaching out of the big companies and the scores of smaller concerns who are making a feverish quest for the black liquid wealth are doing the work in the face of the highest prices ever paid for oil well supplies and are deserving of every success. The meeting was called to order in the Grand Theatre at 11 o'clock by Mrs. Ida Dutton, president of the local club and business reports of the various clubs in the county were given. Mrs. A. J. Lawton of Santa Ana gave an interesting address on "Conservation and Legislation," after which adjournment was taken for luncheon which was served by the ladies of the Anahelm club in the Masonic Temple in the banquet room of the Eastern star, where 86 were seated. Mrs. Ida Dutton gave the address of welcome. Each club president responded to her name with a story. All were good and some particularly funny. Mrs. H. O. Henderson gave a vocal solo. The afternoon meeting was held in the Grand theatre where the program opened with the singing of America by all. "Greetings" by Mrs. Harry Dyer of Long Beach, the first president of the club, was of interest to all. A vocal solo by Mrs. Henderson, a dance by Mrs. Helen Bacon Campbell and a reading by Mrs. Wm. Jackson of Long Beach followed. Next on the program was a vocal solo by Miss Alice Grimshaw, followed by a reading by Mrs. Jackson and a dance by Mrs. Campbell. This closed the program for the afternoon and rounded out what was a very instructive and pleasant day. The Petroleum Midway Co., drilling a well between the Germain Nursery ranch and Los Angeles have their well down 2800 feet with no showing or encouragement. At Durree east of Montebello the company's wild cat well is down 1064 with the rotary making excellent headway. In the Brea field the Amalgamated report a very successful week. On the Hualde property No. 2 is drilling in the oil sand at 3487 and is showing up very nicely. No. 5 has been cemented at 2523. On the Anaheim property No. 42 is rigged up and ready for drilling. The Brea Canyon Oil Co.'s well No. 14 now in the finishing stage is drilling in the oil sand at 3560 feet and at this depth the showing is exceptionally good. The well has been drilling in the oil sand for some time and a long stratum of oil sand has been passed thru. No. 29 held up with pipe trouble is going again and new hole is being made at 3587. One of the most encouraging features of the oil development work for the week in the Brea field is the present condition of the Copa De Oro Oil company's well in Chino canyon. The well is drilling at 3732 and at this depth a report direct from the well states that the outlook for an oil well is more encouraging than at any time since the well has been drilling. A considerable gas pressure and oil colorings that are of the most encouraging nature are present. Senator Courier who has been endeavoring to get an oil well on his ranch north of the Copa De Oro's holdings is about to abandon his initial well drilled to a depth of 3000 feet. At times the well showed up pretty well, but water and formation troubles seemed to be against the project. The senator however has faith in his ranch as an oil bearing property and will no ANNOUNCEMENT ON MARCH 2nd THE FIRM HERETOFORE KNOWN AS PECK & COLBY WAS DISSOLVED BY MUTUAL AGREEMENT. The Courier well is one of the pioneer attempts to get oil in the Pomona valley and was commenced a number of years ago. The Columbia Oil Producing company are about to complete well No. 29 in the Olinda field. Drilling is finishing up in the neighborhood of 3300 feet and the indications are strong for a good well. No. 28 is going ahead again at 3000 feet. At Brea the Columbia have cemented No.-7 at 2250. No. 8 is drilling with the rotary at 700 feet and is going rather slow on account of very hard digging. Union has two wells drilling on the property and have been hampered continually with one difficulty after another. No. 5, 4738 feet deep is fishing for tools. No. 6 drilled originally to a depth of 3700 feet is redrilling at 3520. After allowing the Chapman well at Placentia to stand cemented for a couple of weeks the Union Oil Co. has resumed drilling on the well at 1720. The ever present conglomerat formation struck at a depth of 227 feet still continues. On the Graham Loftus the Union has No. 43 drilling at 3200. No. 49 has The Columbia Oil Producing company are about to complete well No. 29 in the Olinda field. The well was finished at a dept hof 4400 feet and is now making 960 bbls of clean gravity oil. On the Murphy property the Standard has 10 strings of tools running and development work is going ahead as fast as good work and the supply of pipe will allow. No. 31 is drilling at 4007, No. 33 at 3800, and No. 34 at 3327. No. 35 is being tested for water at 3327, and No. 36 is water testing at 3630. No. 39 is drilling at 3365, No. 40 at 3113, No. 41 at 1709, No. 42 at 3103, and No. 30 at 1955. At Whittler the Standard Oil Co. is making excellent progress with five wells drilling. No. 50 is down 2396 feet. No. 55 is drilling at 1845 feet and carrying the 10-in casing. No. 54 is cemented at 1550. No. 35 is making hole at 1334. No. 56 is drilling at 1124, and No. 57 has 1128 feet of hole and going good. All the Whittler wells of the Standard have made a lot of hole during the past week and denotes the fact that the company's team work is good. After testing out its Coyote 2-9 in the Brea district for a number of weeks the Standard Oil Co have decided to test out some of the upper sands noted while the well was in process of drilling. The well's completed depth was 4254. The well was pumped for a number of weeks and made nothing but water. The hole has been cemented off at 4165 and a test will be made here. The Standard Oil Co.'s latest success on the Baldwin property at Montebello is Baldwin No. 11. This well completed at a depth of better than 2900 feet is now making 950 bbls of good gravity oil. At No. 51 a fishing job is delaying the game at 1300 feet. A sand pump lost in the hole is being fished out with considerable difficulty. On the La Merced lease at Montebello the Union Oil Co. has No. 2 cemented at 2280. No. 3 is drilling in the oil sand at 2739 and the well is looking very good. No. 4 is drilling at 2550. La Merced No. 6 is in the oil sand drilling at 2580. The Union Oil Co.is doing considerable development work on the Naranjal property at the present time, more perhaps than ever before. No.6 has been recently completed and is doing better than 100 bbls. No.8 is drilling at 3000 feet. No.9 as started drilling and has a 100 foot hole. No.10 has a fishing pop on requiring some special tools and tuntil these can be assembled the well will be idle. No.11 is rigged up and ready to commence drilling. No.12 is on the rotary and has 1000 feet of hole. The Union has leased the Sloughter property near Montebelloand has taken the initial steps toward the development of the property. The lease calls for 140 acres and lies between the proven Montebello territory and the Shell company's Bassett property. The lease looks good and will be watched with considerable interest.A lot of leased land bordering this tract will be proven by this well. No. 10 is being tested for water at 2227. No. 12 is drilling at 1941. No. 13 is rigging up for the rotary. No. 14 is a location just marked. No. 15 is also a new location, and a grade is being made for No. 16. Not satisfied with the results obtained at Coyote 2-9 and confident that the east end of the Brea field in the vicinity of Richfield is an oil bearing area the Standard Oil Co. has leased a portion of the Kraemer tract and is making grade and getting the materials on the ground for a test well. After being shut down for a period o ten days the Tri-State Oil company has resumed operations on its better than a mile deep well at La Habra. A string of 2 inch casing has arrived at the well and is being put in. As soon as this long string of pipe can be put in drilling will continue from the present depth of 5475. The Union Oil company under the able direction of F. F. Hill is making a great showing and getting results with 17 strings of tools operating in the field. The Bastanchury ranch lease north of Fullerton has proven one of the most difficult properties ever taken for development in the local field. The West Coast Oil Co. drilling in the Olinda field has No. 63 drilling in hard sand at 2650. No. 68 is sidetracking pipe preparatory to going ahead. No. 74 has been cemented at 2234, the Perkins system being used. The West Coast with Pat Malley at the head of its field affairs report a very successful week of development work. No. 63 is drilling in a very hard sand at 2560 feet. Already a showing of oil has been noted and the outlook for a good well is very promising. After being delayed with a sidetracking job a number of weeks new hole is being made. The operations of the smaller companies at Montebello is being watched with much interest as the work of the big companies. Every one is intensely interested in the development of oil and where ever a derrick is seen rising from teh ground interest immediately centers. The Shell company at Bassett has its first well drilling at 600 feet. The Portland Riverside Cement Co. are still fishing for some lost drill pipe at No. 2, the depth being 1995. The pipe is being taken out in small sections. The Ruce ranch well is standing cemented. The Mascot Oil Co.'s well at a depth of 800 feet is showing some oil. The McGinley Oil Co.'s first well that came in doing 800 bbls has dropped to 200 bbls. The company has made two new locations. The Inter State Oil company is drilling on well No. 1 at 1500 feet. The Red Star's No. 2 is drilling at 2400 feet, and the showing thus far is to the effect that the well will have to be drilled deep in order to get into the oil sand. you ever see such enthusiasm as at the Opening of the MONARCHE loak and Suit House? d you ever see such crowds? such buying? welcome accorded us proves beyond a doubt our success is assured. our opening day, Tuesday, business was r than we anticipated.
