RAISE GOATS
Goat raising as a great war time industry of California loomed up as a probability coincident with a report on grazing facilities issued by the United States forest service at the request of the food administration for the state.
According to the investigation concluded by the foresters, there is a small kingdom of 500,000 acres in the Klamath, Lassen and Shasta national forests suitable for grazing goats. This territory would support at least 50,000 of the animals exclusive of vast herds of cattle and sheep. Much of the half million acres is useless for little else but goat grazing as it is a desert like country covered with chaparral.
Active steps are to be taken to stimulate the goat raising industry to supply a growing demand for goat flesh and products, it was announced. Many meat markets in Sacramento and other cities throughout the northern part of the state have occasionally handled the meat, which is similar to mutton in flavor and of equal nutritive value, according to the report.
The demand for canned goat milk
OIL FIELD NOTES
By ELLWOOD J. MUNGER
Early in the year it was estimated that there would be drilled a thousand wells in the California fields before the close of the year. This prediction is about to be realized as there are already 933 wells that have been drilled, and according to the number of new locations that are being made each week the number of wells drilled and in the course of drilling will easily pass the thousand mark. It now appears that all previous records will be surpassed by the amount of new development work under way and the amount of work that has been accomplished with the high price and scarcity of materials never before paralleled. Under the stimulus of higher prices for crude this work has gotten under way.
Another great piece of progress that has been accomplished for the oil industry as the year draws to a close is the successful adjustment of the threatened controversy between the operators and the oil workers brought about by the demand of the workers for an eight hour day and a minimum wage of $4.00. The labor situation is looking very favorable, and the easement of the pipe situation with the price of crude advancing a little from time to time all go to make a very promising outlook for the industry during the coming year. Without a doubt a great deal of wildcattling will be done during the coming year and every available oil bearing ground in the state will be sought out and made to produce its portion of the wealth of the nation. The rapidity with which land that has any promise of oil possibilities at all is being leased up very tackled in this field. Been under course of past three years. In the Columbia has three No. 29 and 28 are nearly and are both looking at 31 has resumed drilling after standing cement tools being used.

The demand for canned goat milk resulted in the establishment of a canning factory in Southern California, which finds a ready market for its output.
In addition to the economic value of the animal at this time when the nation is conserving meats for exportation to the allies and the soldiers on the firing line, herds of goats would prove of great value in fire prevention work through consumption of brush, which constitutes the gravest fire menace. Thousands of preventable fires occurred in California forests last year with a tremendous loss. "Feed the brush to the goat" is a sure way to reduce the percentage of fires according to officials of the forest service.
Under the able management of one of the veterans of the oil game, Supt. Collins of the Santa Fe Oil company is making a great showing in the old Olinda field. The company has five wells drilling and the hole made each week is very indicative of the fact that the work is going ahead very rapidly. No. 79 is drilling in shale at 1297, No. 78 is down 3501 and going very rapidly. No. 79 is drilling in the shale at 1297, No. 78 is down 2501 and going very incel. No. 80 it 2744 with the drilling going good. No. 81 is drilling at 2005 in white sand. No. 82 is in blue shale and has 755 feet of hole. No. 83, a new well is setting a baller and engine.
Robert B. Moran, an oil expert called by A. Otis Birch, who is suing Orange county for the return of about $19,000 paid in taxes, testified Tuesday that he estimated the value of the Birch property on the first Monday in March, 1916, to be $230,000. That year County Assessor James Sleeper assessed the property at about $525,000. Moran said he based his estimate upon many things, including the record of the wells and the price of oil.
The Amalgamated Oil company is closing up the year with development work very strong. Early in the week two new wells were located by the Co., in the Brea field. The new wells are Hualde No. 5 and Anaheim No. 42. Grading work has commenced on one of the locations.
The company is drilling Hualde 2 at 3111, No. 9 is putting in 8½ casing at 2490.
On the Huntington tract near Los Angeles the Amalgamated is down 2300. Drilling is going right along with no particular showings as yet. On the Durfee property east of Montebello the Amalgamated have commenced drilling and have 200 feet of hole.
The Brea Canyon Oil company is busy drilling two wells and hope to have at least one of them close to completion at the end of the year. No. 14 has 3166 feet of hole and No. 29 is drilling at 3207. Both wells are going right along nicely and have been remarkably free from fishing jobs or pipe troubles.
Carefully conducted procedure on the part of Supt. Twitchell of the Copa De Oro Oil company has resulted in the removing of a string of tools from the hole and drilling is going ahead nicely again. The depth is turning the 3600 mark and indications are getting stronger for a well as the hole goes down. It is believed that at 3900 feet a good well will result and a good gravity oil obtained.
The Columbia Oil company will commence drilling on its No. 8 on the Orange lease in the Brea field this week.
Discouraged at the progress and finding tract near Long Island Petroleum Company done the well. It is this company has seen promising territory and will commence the demeat at an early date.

In March, 1916, oil was worth 50 cents a barrell. Moran said that had oil then been worth 70 cents he would have put the value at $400,000.

tackled in this field. The well has been under course of drilling for the past three years. In the Olinda field the Columbia has three wells drilling, No. 29 and 28 are nearing the 300 mark and are both looking very good. No. 31 has resumed drilling at 500 feet after standing cemented, the rotary tools being used.
An explosion that indirectly caused the death of an employee took place in one of the separating tanks of an electrical dehydration plant operated by the Fullerton Oil company. The explosion has been studied carefully and been given the attention of experts and they are at a loss to explain the phenomenon. Heretofore the electrical dehydration of oil has been considered the safest and most economical method of cleaning the oil. The Petroleum Rectifying company, a northern company has a large number of plants operating in this field and the explosion that took place in the separating tank of this plant will no doubt cause the operators to give the matter a great deal of careful as well as expert study. The explosion in the plant was not attended by fire until about 30 seconds later when fire was noticed around a boiler nearby. The fire at the boiler in turn set fire to the plant, the burning oil ran down the canyon and set fire to a sump containing quite a quantity of oil. The fire geenrated steam in a water line near by that burst with such terrific force that one joint of pipe was shattered and a portion struck an employee on the head killing him instantly. Oil men will take warning from this accident to watch out for pipe lines in case of fire.
Discouraged at the outlook of the progress and findings of the Carson tract well near Long Beach the General Petroleum Company has shaken
ern division for the successful manner in which the well was drilled. A world record was made for rotary drilling on the well as at one time 3980 feet of drill pipe was operating. The last thousand feet of hole was drilled with standard tools and a very careful log of the formation changes was kept. It is understood that the Highland Development company drilling a well near by did not meet with any better success, at the present time this company is perforating the casing with the intention of making a gas well out of the hole.
The Union Oil company drilling on the Bixby ranch in the same vicinity are now at a depth of close to 3200 feet with no indication as yet that would cause a rush on land leasing. So it is almost a settled fact that the water front field in the neighborhood of Long Beach is totally devoid of oil or any of its products.
The Standard drilling on the Emery lease has two wells drilling and the results on both are excellent. No. 32 is at the 3768 mark and No. 34 is drilling at 3208 feet.
That the Standard will continue the development of the Murphy property on a large scale is evinced by the fact that during the past week four new wells have been located. Eight strings of tools are being operated on the lease and drilling is going nicely at No. 26 with 3995 feet of hole. No. 30 is standing cemented at 4000 ft. No. 31 is drilling the depth now being 4007 feet. No. 33 is 3225 feet deep, No. 34 is being tested out at 3625 feet. No. 35 has been cemented at 3327, also No. 36 at 3245. No. 37 is putting in the 8% at 300 feet. No. 38 is drilling at 3163, No. 39 at 2645. The new wells located are 40, 41, 42, and 43.
At Whittier the Standard has five wells drilling, two are being tested with a possibility of increasing. No. 41 is drilling at 3260 and No. 43 at 2870. Nos 49 and 51 are being temporarily held up by fishing jobs, lost drill pipe causing the trouble in both holes.
Hole No. 17 has been completed by the Union at a depth of 2430 feet. The well is on the beam and making better than 225 bbls. a day. The gravity of the oil it exceptionally good, the figure being 25. No. 16 is in the oil sand drilling at 3600 and is rapidly approaching the finishing stage. No. 15 is held up fishing for a bailer.
The Union La Merced No. 4 now drilling in the shale at 2100 has all the indications of duplicating No. 1 a well now making 650 bbls daily. Drilling at No. 2 is at 2100, No. 3 at 2080, No. 5 at 2320 and No. 6 has 1250 feet of rotary hole.
geenrated steam in a water line near by that burst with such terrific force that one joint of pipe was shattered and a portion struck an employee on the head killing him instantly. Oil men will take warning from this accident to watch out for pipe lines in case of fire.
Discouraged at the outlook of the progress and findings of the Carson tract well near Long Beach the General Petroleum Company has abandoned the well. It is understood that this company has secured some very promising territory at Montebello and will commence the development of the same at an early date.
Supt. Serber of the Gold Seal Oil Co. is pleased with the progress his company is making in its well in Chino canyon. The depth is now a little better than 2000 feet, and the outlook for a well is very encouraging.
Drilling by the Red Star Oil Co. at Montebello on its No. 2 well has advanced to 800 feet and this depth has a showing of the most encouraging nature.
The Riverside Portland Cement Co. are still held up with a fishing job at close to 2000 feet. Drill collars are causing considerable trouble by becoming loose and coming off while the fishing work is in progress.
That Thos. Strain intends to make an oil well out of a $90,000 venture is attested by the fact that he will cement the well again making it three times that an attempt has been made to shut off the water. A great deal of oil is standing in the hole and it is believed that if the water can be shut off a producer of some value will be brought in. The well is some 4000 feet deep and has been in the course of drilling for the past six years.
Oil men throughout the state will be particularly interested in the fact that the Standard Oil Co. have abandoned their Dominguez well after drilling the hole down 5005 feet. At this depth the well showed nothing but brown shale, and at no time during the drilling of the well did it show any indications of oil. The Standard is to be commended on their persistency in their endeavor to satisfy the public that the Dominguez field is not an lease and drilling is going nicely at No. 36 at 3245. No. 37 is putting in the 8½ at 300 feet. No. 38 is drilling at 3163, No. 39 at 2645. The new wells located are 40, 41, 42, and 43.
At Whittier the Standard has five wells drilling, two are being tested for water. Drilling wells are No. 49 at 2405, No. 50 at 1830, No. 53 at 1482, 54 at 781 and 55 at 282. Rigging up work is well underway at No. 56 and a cellar is being dug for No. 57.
The banner well of the Montebello field, Baldwin No. 3 owned by the Standard continues to hold up remarkably well on production. The well is flowing a little better than 600 bbls daily and shows no let up. No. 4 is being tested for water at 2464. No. 5 has been cemented at 1770 feet, No. 6 is drilling at 3210. No. 9 is being tested out at 1990. No. 9 is also undergoing the water test at 2'31. No. 10 is standing cemented at 2125, also No. 11 at 2055. No. 12 is being rigged up and will start drilling in a few days.
One the Temple property the Standard has No. 3 drilling at 2400 feet. No. 4 is being rigged up and grading work for a new location No. 4 has started.
The Union Oil company has leased what is known as the Tejon ranch near Bakersfield and will commence drilling immediately. The property is some 30 miles from Bakersfield and comprises some 170 acres all of which is promising property.
Not satisfied with the showing of the deep well on the Bastanchury ranch is making the Union has resumed work on the well. This well was finished up at a depth of 4738 and when put on the pump made nothing for some time but hot water. The well made only a little showing of oil as pumping continued. The casing is now being swedged out and the well will be cleaned out and redrilled.
There seems to be no end to the conglomerate formation encountered in the Chapman well at Placentia. The depth of the well is now 1556 and the hard conglomerate struck at 227 feet still hangs on. The best that can be made is a few feet a day and the well when completed will stand out as one of the most impressive in this district.
