JERUSALEM REGAINED
After more than seven centuries' occupancy by the infidel, Jerusalem again becomes the possession of Christendom. The Turk has surrendered the holy sepulcher into the keeping of the British forces.
Crucially important as are the events in progress on the Italian and western fronts, the whole world nevertheless has followed with intense interest the progress of the British invaders of ancient Palestine.
As long ago as last March one British column captured Hebron, fifteen miles south of Jerusalem. Taere seemed a prospect that Easter might be reverently celebrated in the city where Christ made his great atonement.
Considerations of strategy however, are vastly more powerful than those sentiment, and the triump that was waived at Easter comes to gild Christmas with its glory. Doubtless even in the spring, by forced marches, the British could have won their way to Jerusalem's gates, but it was certain in that event bitter contests for the possession of the city would follow—contests in which the holy places would have been exposed to hazard.
What might then have been achieved by battle now almost bloodlessly has been won by strategy. During the long interval a British column has fought its way up the coast, and in mid-November captured Jaffa. The progress of these forces was such as to threaten the Turkish communications, so that at last the enemy have abandoned almost without a struggle a prize they would otherwise have battled desperately to retain.
As General Allenby's strategy was from time to time revealed through the official reports of the movements of his forces it became evident that the capture of Jerusalem was imminent.

URGE SUPPORT OF FARM SCHOOL
Mrs. S. U. Stewart of San Bernardino has returned from Los Angeles, where she presented the matter of a Southern California farm school for both boys and girls in connection with the citrus experiment station in Riverside, before the members of the executive board of the California Federation of Women's clubs at a luncheon last week.
Mrs. Stewart is vice president of the farm school campaign organization and gave the members of the women's organization a full insight into the plan and scope of the proposed school and it is hoped the project will receive the support of the clubs before the next legislature.
It is desired that the new school be broad in its scope so that both boys and girls can secure education along lines that will be useful on the farm—an education that will tend to keep both on the farms.
In this connection it is interesting to note that steps are under way by which the federal appropriation for vocational training under the Smith-Hughes bill is soon to be apportioned in this state by the board of education.

In this connection it is interesting to note that steps are under way by which the federal appropriation for vocational training under the Smith-Hughes bill is soon to be apportioned in this state by the board of education. This body, in connection with the state university, plans to expend the money on the farm school at Fresno and the citrus station at Riverside in the establishment of training schools for farm school teachers at both places. The definite plans for this will soon be announced and will be in line with the plans for the farm school for boys and girls.

IN THE MATTER OF THE ESTATE OF ERWIN BAYHA, DEceased
Order to Show Cause.
Upon reading and filing the petition of Emma J. Bayha, Adminstrtrix of the estate of Erwin Bayha, deceased, praying for an order authorizing and permitting the said administratrix to lease two several pieces of real property belonging to said estate, and which are hereinafter more particularly described, and good cause appearing therefor.
IT IS ORDERED that said petition be, and the same is hereby set for hearing in Department Two of said Superior Court in the Court Room of said Department Two in the Court House in the City of Santa Ana, in the County of Orange, State of California, on Friday the 25th day of December, A. D. 1917, at the hour of ten o’clock in the forenoon of said day.
AND IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that all persons interested in said estate, be, and they are hereby required to appear before said Department Two of said Court, in the Court House in the City of Santa Ana, in the County of Orange, State of California, on Friday the 25th day of December, A. D. 1917, then and there to show cause, if any they have why said two parcels of real property belonging to the estate of said Erwin Bayha, deceased, should not be severally leased for the period of one year, beginning on the first day of January, 1918, and ending on the 31st day of December, A. D. 1918, and that the rental on each of said parcels of property proposed to be so leased, as aloeraaid, shall be the privilege granted the tenants under the proposed leases, to raise and produce certain crops upon said premises, as more particularly set forth in said petition on file in the office of the clerk of said Court, to which petition reference is hereby made, and which is by this reference made a part hereof.
Said two several parcels of land are described as follows:
Parcel I:
That certain real property situate lying and being in the Rancho Canon de Santa Ana, County of Orange, State of California, and described as follows, to wit:
Commencing at a point North 75° West 9.35 chains from the North-east corner of the tract of 3rd class land allotted to R. G. de la Riva by final decree in partition of said Rancho rendered February 3rd, 1874; said North-east corner being South 87° West 15° West 12.82 chains from the South-east corner of the tract thousands of acres in northern Manchuria with the purpose of raising crops for the American market. It is expected that beans will be the principal crop. This company has found that in Manchuria, a land of cheap labor, the combined system of Chinese hand labor and method with modern machinery seems to be the arrangement which will give the best results at the least cost. When this project is fully developed America will be supplied with beans grown on American owned land with the aid of American machinery, though probably not shipped in American bottoms.
Transportation of beans and bean products each spring from Newchwang southward has provided very profitable freight for several British steamship companies. Until the outbreak of the war Germany had been the

largest consumer of these beans among western countries.
The soy bean is grown in practically every part of Manchuria, the southern bean being slightly more valuable than the northern, as it contains less water and more oil. The price of the northern bean has been kept down considerably in the past due to the poor shipping facilities along the Chinese Eastern railway (a Russian owned road.).
It might be mentioned that the reason why the bean is such a valuable product is its high protein content. The people of China and Japan being principally rice eaters crave a food product containing protein. Western people obtain this element by eating meat, but the bean supplies it in a cheaper form.
