EXAMINING 200 MORE MEN FOR THE ARMY SIXTY NEEDED TO COMPLETE OUR QUOTA OF 204 IN FIRST DRAFT FORTY-SIX ANAHEIM BOYS IN LIST SUMMONED TO APPEAR YESTERDAY Exemption board No. 2 is again busy examining men called to serve in the army. Two hundred more were summoned to appear at 9 o'clock yesterday morning, among them being 48 Anaheim boys. Out of the first 1100 men drawn 156 were sent to Camp Lewis. On September 5, 10 men were sent north, on September 19, 76 men, October 3, 67 men, and October 13, 3 men. This left us 48 short of our quota of 204. Several of these were weeded out either by the camp medical board or the district board at Los Angeles, consequently somewhere between 50 and 60 men will be taken from the 200 called to appear yesterday to supply this deficiency. Following is a complete list of those summoned to appear. Anaheim:— Clifford R. Clark. Edgar J. Hartung. Earl O. Imus. Juan Nieto. Howard D. Campbell. Richard D. Dales. PATRIOTIC FARMERS During his San Francisco visit, Secretary of the Treasury McAdoo made the following statement concerning the farmer and the Second Liberty loan: "Now I should like to say a word about the farmer in this particular campaign. In the first campaign I expressly requested that the farmer should not be solicited because we were then trying to stimulate production and I did not think it was just to ask the farmer to buy at that time, but now that the crops have been harvested the farmer is receiving the surplus from very bountiful harvests and there is nothing he can buy any better than these bonds." "Anaheim Gazette" "The son of the farmer is taking his part in this war. I found in little villages people who came to the railroad stations asking me to say a few words. I found that every one of these villages was contributing its quota and doing it in fine spirit, and so the sons of farmers, like the sons of others, were all being brought together in this great army without distinction, and going forth to serve their country. The farmer is as much interested in this great army of ours as any other class of people and I think if these bonds sold to provide arms, ammunition and supplies for that army are brought particularly to the attention of the farmer he will respond and do his share." WOMAN CANDIDATE FOR POLICE JUDGE Former Orange County Girl Seeks Office In Los Angeles That a former Orange county woman is rapidly breaking into politics is evidenced in the report from Los Angeles announcing that Miss Margaret Gardner, deputy city prosecutor of that city has announced her candidacy for the office of police judge. Assured of support from business men, members of the bar, club women, social workers and a multitude of friends, Miss Gardner's candidacy has attracted sufficient preliminary notice to make her a formidable opponent at the polls. Miss Gardner has been an attache of the prosecutor's office since 1911, when she was appointed clerk. After completing her law studies at Stanford University she was admitted to the bar and was named on the staff of deputies by Prosecutor Erwin W. men, members of the bar, club women, social workers and a multitude of friends, Miss Gardner's candidacy has attracted sufficient preliminary notice to make her a formidable opponent at the polls. Miss Gardner has been an attache of the prosecutor's office since 1911, when she was appointed clerk. After completing her law studies at Stanford University she was admitted to the bar and was named on the staff of deputies by Prosecutor Erwin W. Widney. Since 1913, she has handled a vast number of cases and has recently been assigned to all women's cases. Miss Gardiner is a graduate of Santa Ana high school and formerly lived at Orange. A WORD WITH WOMEN Valuable Advice for Anaheim Readers Many a woman endures with noble patience the daily misery of backache, pains about the hips, blue, nervous spells, dizziness and bladder disorders, hopeless of relief because she doesn't know what is the matter. It is not true that every pain in the back or hips is trouble "peculiar to the sex." Often when the kidneys get congested and inflamed, such aches and pains follow. You can tell it is kidney trouble if the kidneys are irregularly, if bladder troubles are present and in other ways. Then help the weakened kidneys. Don't expect them to get well alone. Doan's Kidney Pills have won the praise of thousands of women. They are endorsed at home. Read this Anaheim woman's convincing statement: Mrs. R. Long, 311 N. Emily St., says: "Mornings I could hardly dress myself because of severe pains which struck me in the small of my back. I had rheumatic pains all over my body. I felt all worn out and didn't have much energy. I suffered from headaches and dizzy spells. I bought a couple of boxes of Doan's Kidney Pills at Mullinix's Drug Store and they helped the bachache and made me fell better in every way." Price 60c at all dealers. Don't simply ask for a kidney remedy—get Doan's Kidney Pills—the same that Mrs. Long had. Foster-Milburn Co., Props., Buffalo, N.Y. FOOD CONSERVATION the Bank of Placentia holding the sack, was disclosed by the filing of a complaint last Tuesday afternoon against J. A. McLaughlin, charging him with larceny. McLaughlin was arrested in Los Angeles by Deputy Sheriffs Modie and Hickox, the officers FOOD CONSERVATION Federal Food Administrator Herbert Hoover asks California to concentrate all energies for the next fortnight upon the food conservation pledge campaign which ends Nov. 4. Ralph P. Merritt, federal food administrator for California, has so wired A. C. Greene, who is acting in his place during Merritt's absence. Merritt is in Washington with Hoover. At Hoover's request all activity for enrolling women in a food conservation army will be postponed until after the pledge battle. The military formation plan has been receiving the enthusiastic adherence of California women, but the urgency of the pledge movement, necessitates its postponement. It is believed by those who understand the army formation, that it will be a potent force for effective action during the whole duration of the war. Hoover asks through Merritt that from now on until the last hour of the food pledge campaign, every endeavor be focused upon securing the half million signatures from California. At the food administration headquarters in the First National Bank Building, in San Francisco, the voluntary ales of Merritt, both men and women, are lending all their strength hand time to the statewide effort. FORGOT THE MORTGAGE An attempt at high financing, with the Bank of Placentia holding the sack, was disclosed by the filing of a complaint last Tuesday afternoon against J. A. McLaughlin, charging him with larceny. McLaughlin was arrested in Los Angeles by Deputy Sheriffs Modle and Hickox, the officers stating that he had his house hold goods packed ready to move out of the state. McLaughlin mortgaged hogs he had on the Eyraud ranch the other side of El Medena to the Bank of Placentia for $5000. He is alleged to have sold the hogs Monday and failed to redeem the mortgage. He sold most of the hogs to the Anaheim Beef & Provision company. A. S. Bradford, president of the bank went to Santa Ana and swore to a complaint against him. The warrant was placed in the hands of Deputy Sheriff Cravath and the Los Angeles officers were advised that McLaughlin was wanted. McLaughlin had been living at Los Angeles for some time past. MILLIONS OF EGGS Eight million dozen fresh eggs were in cold storage in California in the quarter ending June 30, according to a report of the state bureau of foods and drugs, made public Wednesday. This was more than thirty eggs for each inhabitant of the state and does not include 155,235,000 pounds of frozen and canned eggs in storage at the same time. There were also a million and a half pounds of butter, 4,500,000 pounds of fresh meat, nearly 3,000,000 pounds of poultry, 1,500,000 pounds of cheese in storage, according to the report.
