The Weekly Gazette. ESTABLISHED 1870 Henry Kuchel, Editor and Proprietor SUBSCRIPTION PER YEAR ... $1.50 SIX MONTHS ... $1.00 THREE MONTHS ... $ .50 Entered at the Anaheim Postoffice as second-class matter OIL FIELD NOTES By ELLWOOD J. MUNGER The month of July has opeend as the banner month for the oil men in this and other fields of the state as it ushered in the long looked for and long hoped for day when dollar oil would be a reality and not a theme for the oil boosters and the journalists to dream about. Dollar oil is here and why not? Few people outside of the oil operators themselves know that the price of oil well drilling supplies and equipment has advanced all the way from fifty to one hundred per cent during the past year, and more than that this tremendous advance does not seem to be at an end yet. Crude oil at a dollar a barrel is not a very great attraction for the oil man unless he can cut down the cost of developing and producing, and this is entirely out of the question at the present time. The latest schedule of prices to be paid for crude oil at the wells by the Standard Oil company for the product of the local field is a dollar a barrel for 19 gravity oil. For oil as low as 14 gravity the price is only two cents later from time to time but nothing that would cause any great encouragement has as yet emerged from the lead line. An effort will be made to exhaust the water in the hope that as soon as the water is pumped off the oil will come into the hole. The well is showing some gas, the most encouraging feature if the project. The wild cat well was drilled to a depth of approximately 3400 feet, and was finished up without leaving any tools in the hole or anything to mar the success of the well. A great deal depends on the outcome of this well as nine more will be drilled on the property and close to 1000 acres of new oil lands will have been proven up in the local field should the Copa De Oro's well be a success. The Columbia Oil Producing company are busy in the Olinda district with the drilling of three wells. Progress is being made in getting No. 26, the gusher straightened out. This well made an initial flow of 2000 bbls a day but sanded up before it could be completed. The sanding up was so rapid that a string of tools were caught in the hole. A portion of these tools have been removed and it begins to look as though the well will be fished out clean and a big producer put on the beam. No. 28 is drilling around the 2800 mark and is looking very good. No. 29 is also drilling and is making good headway at better than 2000 feet. The Fullerton Oil company, one of the smaller developers of the Brea field is doing its share of the development work with two wells drilling. No. 10 is now at the 3350 mark and going along nicely. At Ni. 11 drilling is running smoothly at 2133. No. 12 put on the beam more than six months ago continues to attract interest in storage tank has been equipment. The Tri-State Oil Habra well is fast moving for one of the district has now passed mark and is going this great depth pleasing couraging for oil. Ing on inside of 3 well has been looking for some little time considerably better into this extreme d. The Standard Oil development was as fast as possible. Property two wells ed. No. 2 is cemeteried. No. 3 at 2100 feet 4 is going good at No. 5 will be on days as the rig is On the Temple pro No. 2 is being put Coyote 2-9, the Star ing going good at 29. Prospects for fin inguez, Bixby and tributary in the so called seem to be dwindling now has its Doming a depth of 3000 feet oil or gas has been land Development well dowif a little Standard's property nothing that would develop. The Bixby ranch are mark, and while no really test the property very startling nature countered. It is here that if oil is Crude oil at a dollar a barrel is not a very great attraction for the oil man unless he can cut down the cost of developing and producing, and this is entirely out of the question at the present time. The latest schedule of prices to be paid for crude oil at the wells by the Standard Oil company for the product of the local field is a dollar a barrel for 19 gravity oil. For oil as low as 14 gravity the price is only two cents lower. A condition is made in the local field in that no oil less than 16 gravity will be accepted. As the greater part of the oil produced in this field will go better than 19 gravity the oil producers will all be benefited very materially. Unfortunately the oil operators in this field are not to derive a landslide dividend from the increase in the price of oil. The field never had as many wells drilling as it has at the present time and the production has not been as low in six months as it is today. At the opening of the year there were 71 wells drilling, 637 wells producing, and making a production of over 49,000 barrels a day. At the present time we have 77 wells drilling, and 676 wells producing and yet the oil produced is only a little over 44,000 barrels daily. The cause of the rise in the price can easily be explained from the above figures. The demand has grown to alarming proportions and the supply is falling off in a manner that is causing the most candid of men to be concerned. The normal demand for the crude product from the fields of the state is figured at 245,000 barrels daily. Heretofore the supply has been rated at 265,000 barrels a day. The present demand for oil throughout the state is 310,000 barrels daily while the production from every available source totals only 265,000 barrels daily. In other words we are running short about 45,000 barrels daily. It is of interest to note how the price rose from 30 cents a barrel paid for oil in June, 1915. At the opening of 1916 the price advanced to 45 cents. Three months later oil was quoted at 50 cents. The price did not go to 60 cents until the following May. September, 1916 saw the price go to 65 cents. The next raise came in March, 1917 when the price went to 70. May witnessed the advance to 75 cents and last June the price went to 85 cents. Dollar oil is the high price of today. The Fullerton Oil company, one of the smaller developers of the Brea field is doing its share of the development work with two wells drilling. No. 10 is now at the 3350 mark and going along nicely. At Ni. 11 drilling is running smoothly at 2133. No. 12 put on the beam more than six months ago continues to attract interest in that it will prove either the possibility or impossibility of exhausting the water from a well by continuous pumping. This well when first put on the beam made pure water and has steadily increased the percentage of oil to a fluid that cuts half oil and half water. The General Petroleum Co., drilling on the Carson tract in the water front field are still in serious difficulty and have been unable to make any headway during the past week. A 12½ bit in the hole is the cause of a fishing job that has been as stubborn as any ever encountered. The Gold Seal Oil company drilling a wild cat well in Chino canyon a mile or so northeast of the Copa De Oro's property are meeting with the most encouraging results with the drilling of the initial well. The tools are operating in the neighborhood of 1800 feet and some very good showings of oil have been found. Drilling is going ahead under the most enthusiastic circumstances. Some oil men believe that the property of the Gold Seal is better looking oil land than the Copa De Oro. However the writer believes that both locations are good but that the Copa De Oro will have to drill the deeper well. The Olinda Land company are continuing development operations with the drilling of No. 18. The depth of the hole now registers 2800 feet and drilling is going ahead very nicely. The Olinda Land company are making a special effort to increase the developed production as much as possible and are getting ready to redrill and deepen a former producer, No. 2. The Providential Oil company is getting their Brea field property rounded up into very nice condition. The company now have wells No. 1 and 3 producing, making a nice pro- a depth of 800 feet oil or gas has been land Development well down if a little Standard's property nothing that would develop. No. 15, will feature a bal parade, in which r screen beauties will prizes will be awarded costumes and gener al Sunday, July 22, Scotch Pipers and Died and entertaining arranged. The regular sum works, dancing, bath grammed for every proved electric lar s stimulated attendance resort. According to a Roper, Mrs. Dan Naught arrived in that town mother, and is being time by her old friend neighboring towns, is having a monkey trying to keep house. Mr. and Mrs. F. May witnessed the advance to 75 cents and last June the price went to 85 cents. Dollar oil is the high price of today. Probably at no time since the entry of the Amalgamated Oil company into the local field has the company had as small amount of development work underway as it has at the present time. This well is drilling at 2400 feet. Work has been suspended at No. 9 temporarily on account of the necessity of having to move the rig before hole can be made. On the Anaheim Union property the Amalgamated has No. 56 rigged up and ready to commence drilling. It is understood that a shortage of materials is preventing the starting of drilling on this well. The Brea Canyon Oil company is getting along very nicely with the redrilling and deepening of No. 14 a former producing well. At No. 29 drilling is going good at 2700 feet. The company has made a location for a new well to be known as No. 31. Plans for the abandoning of No. 30 are being completed and in a few weeks the big well that was destroyed on account of the movement of the formation will have lost its identity and passed into oblivion. The oil man like others is called upon to forget past losses and start over again. The Copa De Oro company's wild cat well in Chino canyon continues to keep its owners on the anxious seat as the well is pumping straight water. A few colors are noticed on the wa- Anaheim Gazette storage tank has been added to the equipment. The Tri-State Oil company whose La Habra well is fast approaching a record for one of the deep wells of the district has now passed the 5000 ft mark and is going still deeper. At this great depth plenty of gas is present and the formation looks quite encouraging for oil. Drilling is now going on inside of 3 inch casing. The well has been looking rather doubtful for some little time, but is looking considerably better as the hole goes into this extreme depth. The Standard Oil company is pushing development work at Montebello as fast as possible. On the Baldwin property two wells have been cemented. No. 2 is cemented at 2200 feet and No. 3 at 2100 feet. Drilling at No. 4 is going good at close to 1700 feet. No. 5 will be on the map in a few days as the rig is almost completed. On the Temple material for No. 2 is being put on the ground. At Coyote 2-9, the Standard report drilling going good at 2950. Prospects for finding oil at Dominguez, Bixby and the surrounding territory in the so called water front field seem to be dwindling. The Standard now has its Dominguez well down to a depth of 3000 feet and not a sign of oil or gas has been noted. The Highland Development company have a well dowf a little distance from the Standard's property 3400 feet and have nothing that would encourage further development. The Union drilling on the Bixby ranch are at the 2700 foot mark, and while not deep enough to really test the property, nothing of a very startling nature has been encountered. It is the opinion of oil men here that if oil is found it will be Miss Della Jones of Clyde, Kansas, has been spending a few days with Mrs. George Bishop. Fred Staehnke and wife, who left here in the spring of 1914, for Germany, just before the outbreak of the European war, have returned to again make their home in Anaheim. They left Germany for Copenhagen, Denmark, some moths ago, going from there to Norway. They sailed from a Norwegian port June 8 and arrived in New York June 20, reaching Anaheim on July 5. The new street sweeper recently purchased by the city at a cost of $5500 will be in charge of Bud Sackett, who has resigned his position as night policeman. It will be operated at night, beginning with the residence streets and finishing up in the small hours of the morning with the business streets. Oscar Dorn has been appointed to the vacancy on the force caused by Sackett's resignation. Dorn has served under Uncle Sammy's colors in various portions of the earth, including the Philippines, and will make an excellent peace officer. The managers of the Mason theatre have added a new feature to that popular house. They have engaged an orchestra for Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and will give their audiences high class music in addition to the best films on the market. The orchestra is complete. Anaheim audiences are discriminating in the matter of music, but Joe Collings declares that the music furnished by the Mason on these nights will satisfy the most aesthetic taste. Mrs. M. R. Miller of Long Beach has been visiting at the home of her son, L. E. Miller. MASON THEATRE BRILLIANT CAREER OF LIONEL BARRYMORE One of the First of Big Stars to Enter Motion Pictures Lionel Barrymore, star of the Metro Rolfe feature screen play, "The Millionaire's Double," showing at the Mason theatre tonight, possesses the initiative that has made the Barrymore family the most famous in the annals of American theatrical history. Mr. Barrymore was one of the first of the big stars to enter motion pictures. This was with D. W. Griffith at the old Biograph. Then came "The Exploits of Elaine," and later the Metro successes which have won for him his present eminence in the film drama. These include "His Father's Son," "The Brand of Cowardice," "Dorlan's Divorce" and "A Yellow Streak." Mr. Barrymore's grandmother was Mrs. John Drew, mother of the present John Drew, a famous actress-manager of her day, and with her he made his first appearance on the stage in "The Rivals." With John Drew, his uncle, he appeared in "The Second in Command" and "The Mummy and the Humming Bird." He was featured in prominent roles in "Arizona," "The Hon. John Grigsby," and "Uncle Dick" and toured the country with James A. Herne in "Sag Harbor." He was selected to interpret in America the leading role in Sir J. M. Barrie's play, "Pantaloon." Other successes in which he appeared were "The Brixton Burglary," "The Other Girl," "The Best of Friends" and "The Flies of Fate." He appeared in vaud-eville in a dramatic sketch called "The Still Voice." BATHING GIRLS AT SEAL BEACH July 4 and Sunday, July 8 were record days at Seal Beach, scoring the largest attendance of this or any preceding season. Next Sunday, July 15, will feature a bathing girls fashion parade, in which many well known screen beauties will appear. Cash prizes will be awarded for the best costumes and general appearance. Sunday, July 22, will feature the Scotch Pipers and Dancers, and a varied and entertaining program has been arranged. The regular summer events, fireworks, dancing, bathing, etc., are programmed for every Sunday. An improved electric car service has greatly stimulated attendance at this popular resort. According to a Rhineland, Mo., paper, Mrs. Dan Naugle of this city has arrived in that town on a visit to her mother, and is being shown a good time by her old friends in that and neighboring towns. Meanwhile Dan is having a monkey and a parrot time trying to keep house by himself. Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Mauer and Mr. and Mrs. Emil Heying went up to Los Angeles Sunday and attended the theatre at night. A number of Anaheim people and their visitors attended a dinner at Los Angeles Sunday given by Mr. and Mrs. Ferris. The party consisted of Mrs. J. C. Mauerhan Mrs. C. J. RUSSIA'S FUTURE It is really difficult for people in the United States to realize that Russia is the largest country, territorially, in the world, that it has more than twice the land area of the United States, and a population of 180,000,000, seventy-five per cent of whom are engaged in agriculture. It is the most important granary in the world, and in time of normal crops, exports more wheat than the United States. It ranks third as a tobacco raising country, is second only to the United States and will give such audiences high class music in addition to the best films on the market. The orchestra is complete. It is the most important granary in the world, and in time of normal crops, exports more wheat than the United States. It ranks third as a tobacco raising country, is second only to the United States in the amount of petroleum produced. More horses are raised in Russia than in any other country and it also produces more fur bearing animals than any other country. With a stable democratic government established and the war successfully closed, Russia will offer the most promising field for investments in the world. It has the most tremendous possibilities and they have been the least developed. Russia is destined to play a tremendous part in the future history if the world. THE NEW GRAND BIG ALL STAR WEEK INCLUDING FRANKLYN FARNUM FRIDAY AND SATURDAY A noted star every day and a big production with it is what the Grand promises its many patrons the coming week. Friday and Saturday Franklyn Farnum will be seen in "The Car of Chance" and a screamingly funny two reel comedy, "Wild Beasts at Large". "The Car of Chance is a five act comedy drama with Franklin Farnum as the driver and pretty Brownie Vernon, his co-star as the mechanician. It is the story of a rich young man who gets down to cases and then starts in the jitney bus business—it is unique and the kind of a play everyone likes. Sunday, matinee and night, beautiful Anita Stewart will be presented in small toy shop, as well as a lazy uncle, who is himself shiftlessness personified and hates all people with money. Her struggle between love and "duty" when she flinds that the man she has given her heart to is a millionaire's son instead of a chauffeur, as she had believed, results in an amusing dramatic situation. With a keen appreciation of the requirements of the part, Bessie Love again proves her right to be considered one of the natural stars of the screen. Wednesday and Thursday Dorothy Dalton, Thomas H. Sunday, matinee and night, beautifl Anita Stewart will be presented in "The Glory of Golanda." The first part of the story is laid among peasant folk who live happily in their simple style. The rough hut is shown with the big dog chained outside and the interior shows the great earthen oven with beds of straw on top and along the side. The furniture is home made and the few dishes are earthen ware of a crude description. The picturesque dress of the characters in these scenes is also most attractive and Miss Stewart proves to her friends that clothes do not make the girl for she is every bit as charming as the girl of the people as she is as the society bud. One or two pictures of a religious nature hang upon the walls and the simple country folk stand before them uttering their native prayers before sitting down to their evening meal. The homes of the Russian nobility too, are authentic and throughout the backgrounds form fitting settings for the excellent work of those in the cast. Bessie Love makes her fourth appearance as a Triangle star in the Fine Arts production of "A Daughter of the Poor," which will be shown Monday and Tuesday. The character played by Miss Love in this feature differs from any she has done heretofore. She takes the part of a girl who has inherited a four reel comedy, "Wild Beasts at Large".
