ESTABLISHED 1870 Henry Kuchel, Editor and Proprietor SUBSCRIPTION PER YEAR ... $1.50 SIX MONTHS ... $1.00 THREE MONTHS ... $ .50 Entered at the Anaheim Postoffice as second-class matter NO EXEMPTION FROM REGISTERING FOR DRAFT Persons of All Nationalities Within The Age Must Report Every male citizen of the United States, within the conscription age limits, regardless of nationality, will be compelled to register under the draft law, according to the interpretation by Sheriff Thos. F. Finn of San Francisco. Finn announced that he would require every citizen, without regard to race, to register and that failure to do so would mean drastic punishment. According to Finn's interpretation, Japanese, Chinese, Austrains, Germans, Mexicans, in fact every person who is a citizen, must register. After registration the majority of these nationalities, undoubtedly will be exempted. Hundreds of letters have come to Sheriff Finn from mothers and sweet-hearts trying to find some way for those in whom they are interested to escape the operation of the draft. Some of these have endeavored to use influence in securing appointment of their sons as deputy sheriffs in the belief that such an appointment would make them exempt from the draft. Sheriff Finn from mothers and sweet-hearts trying to find some way for those in whom they are interested to escape the operation of the draft. Some of these have endeavored to use influence in securing appointment of their sons as deputy sheriffs in the belief that such an appointment would make them exempt from the draft. Finn declared that all of the appointments to deputyships in the world would not save them a moment. Finn says that during the last several weeks his 400 deputies have been gathering data which will make it practically impossible for any male citizen within the prescribed ages to escape. "On the day following registration," Finn said, "the delinquents will be rounded up and charged with a federal offense. No favoritism will be shown and every citizen of every race must register and no excuses will be accepted." FAMOUS PLAY COMING TO THE NEW GRAND 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Will be Presented in a Short Time Manager Mozart has arranged for the presentation of the great spectacular play, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," but the dates for its production have not yet been fixed. This story is founded on Jules Verne's fascinating novel, and is one of the biggest attractions on the screen. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea has been running for five weeks at the Majestic in Los Angeles, and although the prices were 50c, 75c and $1.00, the house has always been crowded. Mr. Mozart does not permit any of the good things to get away from him. EXTEND DISTRICT By-filling a new petition, residents of the proposed Garden Grove storm water district believe they have now before the board of supervisors a proposal for a storm water district that will be acceptable. Since the first petition was filed, another has been circulated and signed up, and was filed Tuesday by Attorney H. C. Head, George Reyburn and others interested in the district. C. Head, George Reyburn and others interested in the district. In this new petition the amount of west bank of the Santa Ana river channel that the storm water district undertakes to look after has been extended southward half a mile from the point where the first petition designated as the southern point of the bank to be looked after by the district. There is also excluded from the proposed district some territory to the south. The Board of Supervisors suggested that this territory excluded could be used in a new district to look after the river bank from the Garden Grove segment south to the Newbert District. ENTERTAIN BRYAN William Jennings Bryan was entertained at breakfast at the Hotel Shay Fullerton Monday morning by the resident alumni of the University of Nebraska, of which Mr. Bryan is a graduate, and the faculty of the Fullerton Union High school. Red and white, the university colors, were used in the decorations, which were huge bouquets of carnations and roses. The three course breakfast was served by the boys of the high school cooking class—Emil Wetzel, Elwood Pickering, Philip Goodell, Armond Sullivan, Robert McGill, Roy Hale and Walter Long. After the address of welcome by Dr. Hauck, Mr. Bryan responded briefly in his original and convincing manner, often which the company adjourned to the high school auditorium, Last year Cravath and Luderus made a compact to split the money they made hitting the sign. Cravath pounded his bovine highness four wallops within a short time and the company removed the sign. Gavvy sadly turned over one hundred cold dollars to his partner in uniform, while Luderus at that time had not hit the sign once. At the opening of the present season, the American Tobacco company erected its sign again, on information and belief that Gavvy was out of his slugging streak. But the hunch was wrong, and last Tuesday Gavvy plugged the bull an awful jolt just ahead of the wethers. There is no agreement between players this year, and Mrs. Cravath says she is going to file an attachment to that fifty. Secretary of the Interior Lane has announced that the national park service, recently provided for by Congress has been organized and Stephen T. Mather, of Chicago, appointed director of the service. Mr. Mather was formerly assistant to the secretary, in which office he had supervision of the national parks and, in addition, other departmental work. He resigned that position to become director of the national park service, in order that he might devote his entire time to the park work. He was born in California in 1867, and educated in the University of California. He then removed to New York and engaged in newspaper work. Later he entered the business of manufacturing borax and boracic acid as a member of the Thorkildsen-Mather company, with offices in Chicago. He is a member of the District of Columbia chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, and of the Cosmos and University clubs, of Washington. Mr. and Mrs. E. Anaheim Gazette BAD HOMBRES Completing the fifth raid of the year in that district, officers Sunday night arrested six Mexicans on different charges, the chief one of which was gambling. The men were caught red-handed by the sheriff and his deputies, Maxwell, Iman and Eels. Joe Lopez, who is accused of conducting a place at which liquors are sold is the chief defendant. At the hearing Monday, every one of the Mexicans pleaded guilty to the charge of gambling, and each one was fined $10. Lopez, who is held on four counts, pleaded guilty to gambling and to conducting a place where gambling was carried on. His total fine was $35. Further charges against Lopez are: keeping a place where liquor is sold, and selling liquor. He has been released on $50 bail for each charge, making a total of $100. The place raided was on the Bixby ranch, about one and one half miles east of Los Alamitos. Six sacks of bottles, empty and full, and a demi-john were found. GIGANTIC WAR LOANS War loans of the six chief European belligerents, according to latest figures available to Federal Reserve Board, aggregate approximately $53,-113,000,000. Loans of Great Britain, France, Russia and Italy are placed at about $36,-300,000,000; those of Germany and Austria-Hungary, not including sixth German loan, reported to have yielded about $3,000,000,000, at $18,800,000,000. The board's bulletin gives the various loans as follows: Great Britain to March 31 last, $18,805,000,000; France, to February 28, $10,500,000,000; Russia to December 31, $7,896,000,000; Italy to December 31, $2,520,000,000; Germany to December 31, $11,226,000. OIL FIELD NOTES The week's survey of the Orange county oil industry shows an unusually large amount of developing work underway. A number of new wells have been put on the producing departments and several new wells will commence drilling as soon as the necessary preparations can be made. At no time during the past year has their been as much new development work started and being carried on as at the present time. The United States government is becoming concerned regarding the supply of oil and gasoline and the oil operators of this field are responding to the situation in a noble manner. Regardless of the fact that the cost of drilling supplies for oil wells has advanced almost 100 per cent, the oil men here are all going ahead and a careful survey of the field reveals an astonishing amount of new work being done by all the companies in the field. The Birch Oil company is getting its property up in the best of condition and has started a new well drilling. The Brea Canyon company are going ahead as fast as possible, regardless of the shortage of materials. Wildcattling in the local field has not been discouraged in the least. Three companies have gone out away from the old established producing area and are looking for new petroleum deposits and it begins to look as though success is about to crown the efforts of the Tri-State and Copa De Ora companies. The oil industry of California as well as the local field is being called on to fill an emergency and judging from the renewed activity here and in the other fields the oil industry will do its share in supplying the United States with fuel oil for war formation, resulting in the breaking of three strings of pipe. Swedging has been underway during the past week and the work is meeting with very encouraging results. At No. 30 they are drilling by a short string of pipe casing and will be making new hole in a few days. Oil men have been deeply concerned as to the pipe situation and have wondered if development will have to be discontinued on account of the shortage of pipe. The Brea Canyon company is the first developing concern in this field to be hit and has well No. 29 shut down waiting for casing. The Copa De Ora company have cemented their wild cat well in Chino canyon at a depth of 3100 feet. A good showing of oil was noticed previous to the cementing and it is believed that when the well is opened up a surprise is in store and a vast new area of proven oil lands will have been opened up. A test of the cementing job will probably be made during the week. The Copa De Ora company have shown a lot of pluck in going out such a great distance from the proven field and are deserving of a good well. The Columbia Oil Producing company are getting along very nicely with their Orange No. 7. The well is now drilling at 1400 feet. The original depth was 1500. Barring any hard luck the tools will be making new hole in a few days. Orange No. 7 has given as much difficulty as any well drilled in the Brea field. In the Olinda field this company have three strings of tools running and are making splendid progress on all wells. No. 26 is down 2800 feet, No. 28 is drilling at 2750 and No. 29 has been cemented at 2140. The board's bulletin gives the various loans as follows: Great Britain to March 31 last, $18,805,000,000; France, to February 28, $10,500,000,000; Russia to December 31, $7,896,000,000; Italy to December 31, $2,520,000,000; Germany to December 31, $11,226,000,000; Austria to December 11, $5,880,000,000; Hungary, $1,730,000,000. Totals include advances made by United Kingdom and France to smaller countries allied with them. No figures are available showing additional amounts received through domestic loans in smaller countries, such as Roumania, Serbia, Belgium and Bulgaria. Figures for Germany and Austria apparently are exclusive of advances to Turkey and Bulgaria, regarding which no official information has been published. Neither do the figures include considerable amounts raised through loans by British dominions and colonies. SANTA ANA MUNICIPAL MARKET Santa Ana's municipal market will open Saturday at Birch park and thereafter will be open three days each week, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Market Master Balderson devoted a great deal of time last week to a tour of the county getting a line on the truck growers and interesting them in the market. He had assurances from every quarter that producers would take an active part in making the enterprise a success by bringing their vegetables to the market, fresh and direct from the field. The market will carry all kinds of vegetables, fruits, eggs, poultry, rabbits, dairy products, fish, loquats, berries and articles of handicraft. The market will open each morning at 7 o'clock and close promptly at noon. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Colby and wife went to Big Bear Wednesday, on a fishing excursion, returning Saturday. They caught the limit every day. The old Anaheim opera house now looks like it had been subjected to a siege of 42-centimeter guns. The wrecking company is making good the old established producing area and are looking for new petroleum deposits and it begins to look as though success is about to crown the efforts of the Tri-State and Copa De Ora companies. The oil industry of California as well as the local field is being called on to fill an emergency and judging from the renewed activity here and in the other fields the oil industry will do its share in supplying the United States with fuel oil for war purposes, and the oil operators are to be congratulated for going ahead when the price of materials is almost prohibitive and the deliveries of the same is a great uncertainty. The Santa Fe Oil company has four strings of tools running in the Olinda field and will have a couple of more started in the near future. The company has No. 47 deepening at 2440. No. 75 is now a good producing well doing close to 300 bbls. No. 76 is drilling at 2147 in sand. No. 77 is drilling at 1536. No. 78 is drilling at 1020. A rig for No. 79 stands completed. No. 80 will be built as soon as the materials can be put on the ground. On the Sentos ranch the Santa Fe's new 3400 acre tract they have commenced drilling. Thos. B. Strain has commenced actual operations on his property near Brea and will make an effort to get a producing well on his ranch property. Mr. Strain is an orange grower but has oil aspirations also. The Amalgamated Oil company have just finished and put on the beam Hualde No. 40. The well is doing 250 bbls of nice light oil and will undoubtedly hold up at this figure. This company are putting new wells on the beam at the rate of one week. The company will start rotating this week at Hualde No. 2. Hualde No. 9 is now drilling at 1808 feet. On the Anaheim Union lease they have completed a new rig for No. 56 and will commence drilling there as soon as the rigging up work can be completed. The Birch Oil company is meeting with marked success in the water shut off campaign, the work has progressed so successfully and the results obtained have so gratifying that the management has deemed it fit to start a string of tools after a shut hole in a few days. Orange No. 7 has given as much difficulty as any well drilled in the Brea field. In the Olinda field this company have three strings of tools running and are making splendid progress on all wells. No. 26 is down 2800 feet. No. 28 is drilling at 2750 and No. 29 has been cemented at 2140. The Fullerton Oil company after pumping No. 12 for three months and watching the production increase and the percentage of water decrease have reached a point where they are reasonably sure that the water will be reduced to a small factor and an oil well will be secured. The well has been watched with considerable interest and if successful it will prove that it pays to pump a well for a long time before getting discouraged. The Fullerton company is drilling at No. 11 at 3280 and No. 10 is down 2750. The Fullerton Great West Oil Co. are determined to get a well on their property on the east side. No. 3 has given a lot of trouble on account of water, and a determined effort will be made to shut it off with another cementing. The management are fully satisfied that they have a good well if the water can be shut off. The General Petroleum company are drilling on the Carson tract near the Standard Oil company's Dominguez property and have reached the 1300 mark with the standard tools. Thus far the General Petroleum has had good success and will be able to show the oil operators something in the way of an oil well in the near future. The Gold Seal Petroleum company who are putting down a wild cat well in Chino Canyon across from the Copa De Ora report the going good at 1600 feet. This well is occupying the attention of oil men here as it will open up a vast area if oil is found in paying quantities. The New Era company under Superintendent Gordan's directions has resumed the drilling of a test well near Placentia and report progress satisfactory. The work was delayed on account of having to have special tools made. The tools have been built and drilling with a combination of standard and hydraulic outfit is underway at 300 feet. John Luneberg went down to San Diego Tuesday to look after business and visit friends. Leon Hatfield was in town last week visiting his brother, George. He is sergeant in the hospital corps of the Seventh regiment, and recently passed the examination for second lieutenant. He will shortly receive his commission. Ray Nebelung, Jack Walsh, Frank Anderson, Clyde Webb, Ray Adams, Dick Ahern and S. Cookson, were among the Anaheimers at Seal Beach Sunday. The Temple Square Quartet made a trip to San Francisco last week. H. A. Dickel made a business trip to Los Angeles yesterday. Susanne, the ten-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Witman, died Tuesday morning after a brief illness. Union lease they have completed a new rig for No. 56 and will commence drilling there as soon as the rigging up work can be completed. The Birch Oil company is meeting with marked success in the water shut off campaign, the work has progressed so successfully and the results obtained have been so gratifying that the management has deemed it fit to start a string of tools after a shut down of several months. Water conditions developed several months ago on the Birch hill property that were of such nature that immediate attention was necessary to save the field from disaster. The Birch company dropped the development work and gave the matter of shutting off the water their entire attention. Wells No. 9 and 10 have been handled with success, and it is only a matter of a short time until the Birch company will have conquered the water difficulty. Drilling has been resumed on No. 14 at a depth of 1800 feet. Birch No. 5, without a doubt the most consistent producer ever developed in the California oil fields has dropped down to its lowest production figure. The famous three million dollar well is now doing less than 250 bbls, a day. The great volume of gas that heretofore accompanied the production has also fallen off. Birch No. 5 was brought in five years ago and produced for three consecutive years 2000 bbls, of oil daily. The well came in at a time when the company was on its last pins financially and saved the day for them. Indications are strong that the Brea Canyon company will recover well No. 28, whose production was completely shut off due to the movement of the The New Era company under Superintendent Gordan's directions has resumed the drilling of a test well near Placentia and report progress satisfactory. The work was delayed on account of having to have special tools made. The tools have been built and drilling with a combination of standard and hydraulic outfit is underway at 300 feet. The Olinda Land company is down 3250 feet on their No. 17 and expect to discontinue drilling at any time now. Showings for the last 100 feet have been very good and a good well is expected. No. 18 is drilling at 2626 and has already shown some oil. The Standard Oil company are busy developing all properties in this field and have a large number of strings of tools running on the several leases. The demand for oil was never greater than at the present time and the Standard will make an attempt to supply the increased demand. On the Emery they have put No. 30 on the beam and have a 600 bbl well. No. 31 is drilling at 3700, No. 32 at 3600 and No. 33 is drilling at 600 feet. The Standard is unusually busy on the Murphy property. Nine strings of tools are running with marked progress on the wells during the past week. No. 21 is redrilling at 3600, No. 23 is close to 3650, No. 26 is drilling past the 4200 mark, No. 27 is at 3200, Nos. 29, 30, 31, and 32 are drilling and range in depth from 2500 to 3200 feet. At Whittier the deepening and drilling of a number of wells is keeping five strings of tools at work. No. 44 is being deepened and is now at 2800, No. 46 is past the 1800 mark, 47 is paying quantities. The Uner drillin menting and found now approving sliders pay good soon. Reports of the operations of the Standard on their Baldwin Hills tract are to the effect that the company has struck some of the hardest formation encountered in this field and find the going extremely difficult. At Baldwin No. 2 the drilling tools advanced from 1350 to 1415, making only 60 feet for the week. At No. 3 the depth is 1150, just 30 feet deeper than reported a week ago. At No. 4 a little better progress was made, the tools advanced to the 700 foot mark, making 425 feet for the week. The Temple lease will be tested out as to the success of the cementing early this week, and if conditions are satisfactory drilling will be resumed. At Dominguez the Standard are getting along very nicely. The well has now reached the 1850 mark and drilling is going good. All the care and precaution possible is being used in the drilling of this well as the formation along the water front is rather difficult to handle. The San Diego Consolidated company are putting their No. 1 well on the beam after an elapse of a year's time. Water trouble has been against the success of the well.
