WANT BEER TABOOED,
DANCING PROHIBITED
Ask That Liberties of the Visitors at County Park be Curtailed
Declaring that bad examples were being placed before young people by parties who go to Orange County Park and serve beer with their lunches, Sam King, custodian of the park, asked the board of supervisors if anything could be done to stop the practice.
The matter was referred to the district attorney for an opinion.
"A majority of the people of the county are opposed to liquor," said King, "and I believe the majority should rule. It would not be so bad if the parties using the liquid refreshments with the lunches would go to a quiet nook in the park where they would not be in view of the young people."
Supervisor Leck said that he had heard considerable complaint about dancing in the park pavilion on Sundays.
In the discussion following it was the general view that dancing should be no more objectionable than playing ball or other sports engaged in by many who visit the public pleasure grounds.

"The high cost of living is not a broker's security," says a writer in Collier's: "It doesn't come down because of any divulged or undivulged information, and the threatened scarcity of farm labor next summer will not cheapen anybody's garden truck. The outlook is for food prices as high as last year's, or higher, and that means good value in any edible items that you can grow. Most of us can be shareholders in the seasons if we will, and so get to participate in Nature's annual distribution of real profits. The statesmen of warring Europe have seen this point and made its attainment a cardinal object of their policy. Practically all of the combatant governments have issued official plans and specifications for kitchen gardens designed to produce the maximum addition to food supply at the lowest cost in time and money. The British authorities believe that back yards, intelligently farmed in off hours, can be made to yield about $150 per acre per year. Plainly, if such action is taken on a large scale, the addition to national resources will be indeed noteworthy. From the economic point of view there is a double saving here since this kitchen truck, when grown, is already distributed for use—no delivery charges. The hygiene experts are much impressed with the gain in health that must accrue to factory and other indoor workers from such hours of pleasant activity in the open. There are many ways of saving, but none better than reducing the food bills by digging up the gold that is in your own back yard. Now is the time to plan for it."
FREE PLANS FOR FARM BUILDING
Hereafter any farmer who has farm buildings to build can obtain typical plans of such structures from the University of California without cost.
Through this free distribution of typical plans for farm structures, the farmers of California will be able to make use of the best modern ideas of architects, engineers and agricultural experts as to how to design farm structures so as to get the best possible returns in the way of service, sanitation, and satisfaction.

Through this free distribution of typical plans for farm structures, the farmers of California will be able to make use of the best modern ideas of architects, engineers and agricultural experts as to how to design farm structures so as to get the best possible returns in the way of service, sanitation, and satisfaction.
For a year and a half the problem of preparing plans for farm structures especially suitable to California conditions has engaged the attention of the division of agricultural engineering of the College of Agriculture. Now plans are ready for free distribution for dairy, hay and utility barns; milk houses, hog houses and chicken houses silos, septic tanks, feeding appliances and various other farm structures.
Any farmer who is planning any building work on his farm should write to the Agricultural Extension Division at Berkeley, and ask for a complete list of available plans and how he can borrow them.
The importance to the prosperity of California of this very practical new activity of the University is shown by the fact that ten million dollars is spent every year by the farmers of California on farm structures, and yet extremely few California farmers have in the past had the advantage of architectural and engineering advice from experts in farm architecture and farm engineering.
A WARM CLIMATE
A preacher was describing the "bad place." "Friends," he said, "you've seen molten iron running out of a furnace, haven't you? It comes out white hot—sizzling and hissing. "Well—" (the peracher pointed a long, lean finger at the congregation) "well," he continued, "they use that stuff for ice cream in hades."
