All admonish their readers that they owe allegiance to their adopted country. Last Wednesday night the national committee of the National German Alliance, in session at Philadelphia, pledged that society of 3,000,000 members to support the United States. It was decided that the alliance would continue to collect money for the relief of war victims of the central powers, but that in the event of war with Germany the money would be turned over to the United States government. The Socialists of Orange county last week passed resolutions condemning the administration's attitude on the submarine question and demanding that the president keep the peace. W. J. Bryan's peace plans were endorsed, and the speech recently delivered by Senator Works was also commended. Many resolutions have been adopted in California denouncing Works for his uncalled for tirade against the president, but there is some consolation to him in the fact that the so- OIL FIELD NOTES The development and production of petroleum continues to move at a rapid pace in the Brea-Fullerton field. The past week has witnessed some great changes in the complexion of the field and not a few wells have made some wonderful performances. New lands have been leased, a number of wells put on the beam, and drilling preparations are well underway for new work by a number of companies. Never before in the history of the development of the local field has there been so many men employed, and as much real and substantial activity among all the operators as at the present time. The Amalgamated company put two wells on the beam during the past week. Hualde No. 17 is now on the pump and making a nice production. No. 26 is at the 2954 mark and at this depth casing is being landed. On the Anaheim lease this company have No. 30 drilling at 3210. This well is showing up strong and has every indication of being a good producer. Hualde 40 was put on the beam early in the week and while not starting off very strong the well has increased its production to a good figure. At No. 41 a new rig stands completed and will be the next well to start drilling. The Birch Oil company's famous old No. 5 is occupying the center of interest again in this field. This well has been producing for the past six years and is perhaps the most uniform producing well in the state. Up until about a year ago the well was making over a thousand barrels of oil a day. About eight months ago the well dropped to a little better than 200 a day. A few days ago the well commenced flowing again and produced close to 400 bbls a day, the most oil management feeds the outcome and big things later. "OPPORTUNITY" AT THE MASON Anaheim people will have a chance to see how their neighbors act up before the motion picture camera. "Opportunity," the splendid Orange county picture, will be shown at the Mason theatre Thursday and Friday nights and Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. The entire picture was produced by Orange county people and the scenes were all laid in this county. There are scenes in all the leading cities of the county as well as all points of interest such as the beaches, oil fields, factories, San Juan Mission, etc. In addition to the local scenes there is a romance in the story, and it is well worth the price without the local environment. Among the Anaheim people in it are Miss Hazelle Waidler, one of the stars, W. E. Duckworth, who impersonates a policeman, F. C. Krause, Harry Whitaker and numerous others, all of them acting as if to the manner born. This picture will be produced at most of the theatres in the east for the purpose of advertising Orange county. Don't miss seeing it right here where it was made. Many of the scenes were taken in Anahim. DANIEL NAUGLE HURT IN AUTO ACCIDENT Car Upsets Near Los Alamitos Breaking Two of His Ribs Daniel Naugle was seriously injured by the overturning of his automobile near Los Alamitos last Thursday. He had been to Seal Beach, having driven Fred Dyckman to his home, and on returning met with the mishap. It was at the corner this side of Los Alamitos where the accident happened. On making a short turn the car ran into a ditch and upset. Passers by pulled the machine out. The Birch Oil company's famous old No. 5 is occupying the center of interest again in this field. This well has been producing for the past six years and is perhaps the most uniform producing well in the state. Up until about a year ago the well was making over a thousand barrels of oil a day. About eight months ago the well dropped to a little better than 200 a day. A few days ago the well commenced flowing again and produced close to 400 bbls. a day, the most oil the well has made for the past six months. Last week it was observed that the oil produced had increased a half-degree in gravity and now that the production has doubled over what it was six months ago the well is regarded as the greatest wonder in the Brea field. The writer knows of no oil well that ever increased the quality and the quantity of the oil after producing for as long a time as the Birch company's No. 5. This company is about to put No. 10 on the beam at a depth of 4260. Indications are strong for a good producer. Progress on No. 11 has been stayed somewhat on account of having to drill up some casing. No. 13 is delayed with a fishing job at 2460. Work on No. 14 is held up on account of casing parting. The Brea Canyon company report their freak well No. 29 as holding up remarkably well in production. The well gauges 300 bbls. a day and is producing in connection with the oil 250,000 cubic feet of gas. The gas is being compressed by the Brea Gasoline company and is said to be high in gasoline content. The Brea Canyon company is putting in the 19 inch casing in No. 30 and are drilling at 185. No. 14 is being redrilled and deepened. The Columbia Oil Producing company have got their No. 7 well on the Orange lease going good again and are drilling at a depth of 1500. In the Olinda field this company are drilling No. 26 with the cable tools and are better than 2400 feet. No. 27 has passed the 3300 mark and continues to show up very encouragingly. No. 28 is also drilling and No. 29 is rigged up and will be the next drilled. The Columbia company report the oil produced in the Fisher well as improving in quality and is arousing considerable interest. The Fullerton Oil company is pulling all the casing but the 12½ at their No. 10 and will come back up to 2500 and commence drilling again. Not until the next day did he realize that he was injured. A physician was called and found that two of his ribs were broken. He is confined to his bed, but hopes to be out soon. Red lights will adorn all the stately palms beautifying several Anaheim streets if a request made by the Wednesday afternoon Club is acted upon by the city council. Because a few autolists have collided with some of the trees, club women believe the lights should be installed for public safety. A city man once asked the editor of a paper for some advice. He wrote: "I have a horse that at times appears normal, but at other times is lame to an alarming degree. What shall I do?" The reply came: "The next time that your horse appears normal, sell him." This company have devoted four years of constant labor on this well and if staying with it counts for anything the Fullerton company will get a good well. Redrilling work and deepening of No. 11 has commenced. No. 12 has been put on the beam and at present is making practically all water, only a coloring of oil being present. However the well has made a good showing and the company is confident that in due course of time the water will be pumped off and a good producer will be added to the production department. The General Petroleum company will drill a well along the water front district near the Standard's Dominguez lease. The General have leased property on the Carsen tract and this week placed lumber on the ground for a rig. The oil correspondent has official and confirmed information that the Standard Oil company has a showing of oil in the Baldwin hills well at Montebello at a depth of 2330. The well has been watched closely with great interest and unfortunately some allowed their interest to magnify itself greatly. One publication stated that the well was a big one and that oil had shot over the crown block. This paper and the man who gathers the information take pride in giving its reliable and accurate oil information only. The real facts of the matter are that oil has been found, but the find is a light showing only. However the Anaheim Gazette management feel very confident over the outcome and we hope to report big things later on. On the Emery lease the Standard has Nos. 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32 drilling. These wells are between 2900 and 3300 feet. The Murphy has strings of tools running, and are still held up with a number of stubborn fishing jobs. Nos. 21, 23, 26, 27, 28 and 29 are drilling. A location for No. 30 has been made. On the Whittier lease development work is moving along with Nos. 41, 42, 46 and 47 drilling. No. 48 is being rigged up and grades have been made for Nos. 49 and 50. The Standard Oil have Coyote 3-2 drilling again at 3530 and report progress good. Coyote 3-3 is rigged up and will probably be started drilling before the end of the week. At Bastanchury No. 5 the Union Oil company has established beyond any question a world record for the longest continuous string of ten inch casing. A string of casing 3790 feet in length was put into the well without any difficulty to speak of. A. A. Hardison and Bert Lapham did the work and the job is certainly to the credit of these men, who must have given their work the most constant attention. The casing used is the famous Diamond-B-X and was supplied to the Union by the local California National Supply company. A string of pipe that long and that heavy that has held together that great distance is a product of the finest quality. A. A. Hardison put a string of 8½ inch casing of the same make for a distance of 4600 feet in the Corner stone well. Hardison is known as the long string casing man. The Union is making good progress on the redrilling of Berkenstock No. 2. A depth of 1550 has been reached NOTICE INVITING SEALED PROPOSALS OR BIDS Notice is hereby given that sealed proposals or bids will be received by the Board of Trustees of the City of Anaheim, at the office of the City Clerk of said City, up to eight o'clock P.M. on Thursday, the 8th day of March, A.D. 1917, for all work and material necessary for furnishing and installing on a suitable concrete foundation, a complete fire pumping unit for the City of Anaheim, guaranteed to have a pressure of acid capacity 1500 to 1750 U., S gallons of water per minute, unit to be erected complete with panel-board, starting switch, with no voltage release, overload relay, current and potential transformer for meter, and wiring from starting switch to motor, at the pumping station in the City of Anaheim, County of Orange, State of California, in accordance with the amended specifications therefor, which shall unmodified specifications were adopted by resolution of the Board of Trustees of the City of Anaheim on the 13th day of February, 1917, and are on file in the office of the City Clerk of the City of Anaheim, and are hereby referred to and are by this reference, made a part hereof. Each bid must be accompanied by a good and sufficient bond, equal to one-tenth the amount of said bond and two good and sufficient sureties, who must justify before an officer authorized to administer oaths, in double the amount of said bond, in unencumbered property within the State of California, or by a corporation authorized to execute bonds and undertakings within the State of California, which bond shall be subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees of the City of Anaheim, and shall be conditioned that the bidder shall enter into a contract to furnish the bonds required within ten days after the awarding of said contract, if the same is awarded to him. The successful bidder shall be required, within ten days after the contract is awarded to him, to enter into an agreement with the City of Anaheim, for the doing of said work, and the furnishing of said materials in accordance with said specifications and shall furnish a bond to the City of Anaheim in the sum of one half the amount of said bid, which said bond shall be executed by two good and sufficient sureties who shall justify before an officer authorized to administer oaths under the laws of the State of California, or by a corporation authorized to execute bonds and undertakings under and by virtue of the laws of the State of California, which said bond shall be approved by the Board of Trustees of the City of Anaheim, and shall be conditioned upon the faithful performance of said contract. The successful bidder shall be required at the same time, to furnish to the said City of Anaheim another and additional bond executed by two good and sufficient sureties who shall justify as hereinbefore provided, or by a corporation authorized to execute bonds and undertakings within the State of California which said bond shall be subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees of the City of Anaheim, and shall provide that The Union is making good progress on the redrilling of Berkenstock No. 2. A depth of 1550 has been reached. On the Graham Loftus lease things are moving rapidly. Well No. 12 is being cleaned out and redrilled. No. 39 is in the oil sand at better than 3100. No. 40 was put on the beam and is a good hundred bbl well. No. 41 is drilling at close to 2200 and at No. 50 a test for water is being made. The Hole lease is keeping six strings of tools running and a new derrick is going up. Hole No. 6 is drilling at 3300. No. 8 is drilling at 2900 and No. 9 on the standard tools at 3440. Nos. 11 and 13 are being redrilled and 14 is making hole at 2250. No. 15 has a new rig. Grading for and a road is being built to the next location. No. 16. No. 17 is rigging up for drilling and 18 is 2900 feet deep, and the 10-inch casing is going in. On the Naranjal property 4 wells are drilling ranging in depth from 400 feet to 1400 feet. Preparations for the commencement of drilling at the Myer lease are being rushed at top speed and the well will probably be going before the end of the week. It is understood that a number of operators have leased and secured options on adjacent property and will await the outcome of the Union's well. The Graham Loftus Oil company have just closed a contract with Turner brothers of Los Angeles for the delivery of the Graham Loftus royalty oil for a period of a year. This company get a royalty of better than 20,000 bbls a month from their Fullerton property operated by the Union. It is thought that a very fancy price has been secured for the oil, as it is of good quality and free from water and foreign matter. The oil will be loaded on tank cars at Oleo and shipped by way of the Pacific Electric to Los Angeles. The Union Oil company have commenced the laying of a delivery line to the shipping station and will build the necessary loading racks immediately. The West Coast Oil company is drilling at No. 54 and down 2070. No. NOTICE OF ASSESSMENT Pacific Mausoleum Company—Location of principal place of business, Anaheim, California. Notice is hereby given that at a meeting of the Board of Directors, held on the 19th day of December, 1916, an assessment of Twenty Cents per share, or twenty per cent on each One Dollar, was levied upon its subsurface capital stock of the corporation payable immediately in United States gold coin, to the Secretary of said Company, at its office, Room 9, Masonig Temple Building, in the City of Anaheim, State of California. jitney bus fight in legislature next March will hinge on two sets of bills—one set introduced by Senator Rominger of Los Angeles, and decidedly hostile to the jitney forces; the other by Senator Burnett of San Francisco, and believed to be satisfactory to the jitney men as a compromise measure. A state tax on jitney buses is proposed in both, but Rominger's proposed tax would just about put the jitneys out of business, while Burnett's would be comparatively insignificant. A tax of $25 per seat annually is provided for in one of Rominger's bills. On the ordinary jitney this would be an annual tax of $100. Burnett's bill calls for an annual fee of $15 for each application for a state license. According to the legal expert's interpretation of the Burnett bill, any number of jitney owners could organize an association for the purpose of applying for a license. For instance, if 15 jitney owners should form an association, the license fee would be only $1 a year for each. The jitney people will fight against a state tax, since they are also subject to a city and county tax. The state tax commission stands with them on this, pointing to the injustice of double taxation. Under the state's bungled up taxation laws it would be impossible, except by constitutional amendment, to impose a state tax on jitney buses in lieu of all other taxes, as is now the case with public service corporations. The jitney people would undoubtedly welcome the imposition of a state tax if it would thereby remove them from local taxation. But this is not possible, and while ready to combat any state tax they would properly stand ready, as a compromise, to agree to the Burnett bill. Burnett, in a separate bill, proposes to put the jitneys under the jurisdiction of the state railroad commission. Thus they would be removed from local regulation, even though the cities and counties would retain the right of taxing them. Rominger, in a second bill, proposes a heavy state tax on motor trucks that compete with railroads in transportation of freight. It ranges from $50 for a one ton truck to $350 for a five ton truck. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nellesen are spending a few days visiting with friends in Los Angeles. They will shortly leave for Delhi, Utah, where Mr. Nellesen is to have charge of a large ranch. The Standard Oil company has made an announcement to all employees working around its wells, storage tanks and pumping stations to the effect that smoking will not be tolerated. Holders must enclose with their bills certified checks on a responsible bank, equal in amount to 10 per cent of the amount of their bids, payable to the president of the board of trustees of the City of Anaheim, as a guarantee of good faith on the part of the bidder that he will enter into a contract and give the bonds required and in case the bidder fails to sign the contract and give satisfactory bonds within ten days after the contract is awarded to him, said check shall become the property of the city as liquidation of damaged and incurred expenses. When the contract is signed and bonds accepted the check will be returned to the successful bidder. All other checks will be returned as soon as the contract is awarded or bids rejected. The contractor shall give a bond to the City of Anaheim for one-half the amount of the contract price specified in said contract, with two or more sureties who shall qualify that they are worth double the amount of sold bond in free and unincumbered real property over and above all statutory exemptions, said bond to guarantee the faithful performance of the contract and the keeping of the work in repair until final acceptance, which shall be within ninety days after its completion, provided the whole work and each of the parts be in perfect order. The contractor shall give an additional bond of one-half the amount of said contract, as security to the laborers and mechanics and material men employed by him upon said work, said bond to have two or more sureties, who shall qualify that they are worth double the amount of sold bond in free and unincumbered real property over and above all statutory exemptions. At the end of the first half of the session 2200 bills had been introduced, and many of these were duplicates or covered the same topic. Many of these bills show ignorance of existing laws on the part of members as the ground they cover has already been legislated on. No cure has been found for legislative prolixity, and members try to accomplish what experience would call foolishly impossible. When all reductions are made the number of bills that will actually become laws is not appalling numerous.
