PLACENTIA GROWERS
HOLD ANNUAL SESSION
Prosperous Year Reported by the Secretary of the Association
The annual meeting of the Placentia Mutual Orange association was held at the Round Table club house at Placentia, Tuesday. The meeting was called to order at 10 o'clock and the annual report of Chas. E. Fuller, secretary manager, was given out.
Later a splendid luncheon was served to which all present did ample justice.
C. H. Grassley, manager of the Semi-Tropic Fruit Exchange, G. Harold Powell, general manager of the California Fruit Exchange, A. E. Barnes, secretary of the Fruit Growers Supply company, Don Francisco, advertising manager and C. S. Milliken, field department each gave very interesting talks which were very instructive and of much value to the members.
The following officers and board of directors were elected for the ensuing year. John C. Tuffree, president; W. H. Seivers, vice president; Chas. E. Fuller, secretary-manager; A. T. Pondleton, Benj. Kraemer, Samuel Kraemer, C. C. Wagner and A. L. Porter.
This meeting was one of the best and most profitable ever held by the association. The fact that they are out of debt is very encouraging and the members of the association are looking forward to a very profitable business the forthcoming year.
Following is a partial report of the secretary, C. E. Fuller:
I herewith submit my report for all business transacted by your association for the fiscal year, Dec. 1, 1915, to Nov. 30, 1916:
Your association shipped 434 cars of called non-partisan act which declared for acclaiming party affiliations at the polls instead of at registration time. The single tax measure was not voted upon by 208,993 and the initiative proposition divorcing legislators from state jobs was not marked either way on 401,290 ballots. The seventh issue, which will exempt counties from an unjust burden of highway bond interest and shift some of it to others was scratched by 409,797 voters.
Having suffered several "lean" years the sporting bloods interested in prize fighting and racing are anxious to come back under strict state supervision. The fight game people thought they could get the legislature to lift the bouts to ten rounds, but found out that the voters through the initiative put the limit at four founds, but it is reported that they are going to ask for a state boxing commission similar to the New York law and then go before the voters to extend the limit. The horsemen are also anxious for a state racing commission to regulate their sport with limited meets. The last state fair demonstrated that running races can be staged along with harness meets and still be minus the betting ring.
MOVEMENT
The missionary education movement has just completed its fourteenth year of service. This movement is engaged in a nation wide cooperative effort to increase knowledge and increase positive Christian promotion in the church of the future as well among Christians of the present. It does this by a normal process of education, primarily among children and young people, through study, prayer, giving and service. It does not organize anything

Following is a partial report of the secretary, C. E. Fuller:
I herewith submit my report for all business transacted by your association for the fiscal year, Dec. 1, 1916, to Nov. 30, 1916:
Your association shipped 434 cars of 384 packed boxes each, or a total of 166,678 packed boxes. The percentage shipments for the various varieties of citrus fruits handled were as follows: Navels, 24 per cent; Valencias, 73 per cent; Lemons, Grapefruit, Sweets, St. Mikes, and others, 3 per cent. The shipments for this season totaled 89 cars more than for the previous year. During the past season there were delivered at the packing house 234,854 field boxes of fruit. Since 166,678 packed boxes were shipped the percentage pack for the season is 70.
In former years it has been our custom to pay thirty cents per hundred for the use of an automatic box nailing machine. During the past season your association purchased a new machine thus saving the above expense of quality. The amount of royalty thus paid is $1.20 per car, or around $500 per year. About eighteen months ago your association purchased a quantity of nails sufficient to last, not only for last season's output, but nearly enough for the coming season, at a saving of $2.06 per keg under the present market price. A copying machine, which enables us to send out circulars and cards to the members of the association was purchased with the idea in mind to keep the printing bills down to a minimum. The machine has more than paid for itself.
It is with a great deal of pleasure that the secretary is able to announce that your association is out of debt for the first time since its beginning.
Barring any damage to the crop now on the trees, our shipments for the coming season should total between 500 and 550 cars. This increase will be a factor in keeping down the packing expense for the coming year.
Your brands, Shamrock, Caledonia, and Alblon, are property of the association and are registered both in the United States and foreign countries. These brands are well known throughout the country and have a good reputation with the buying trade.
The missionary education movement has just completed its fourteenth year of service. This movement is engaged in a nation wide cooperative effort to increase knowledge and increase positive Christian promotion in the church of the future as well as among Christians of the present. It does this by a normal process of education, primarily among children and young people, through study, prayer, giving and service. It does not organize anything new in the local church—its sole effort is to infuse the missionary spirit into the membership of every church through the existing agencies.
Ten summer conferences were conducted in 1916 and a bureau of correspondence, consultation and travel is maintained to co-operate with the leaders of denomination and interdenominational religious agencies in the promotion of missionary education.
The results can be estimated only in the same manner, as we reckon the results of the public school system. Its influence is pervasive, continuous, evolutionary. Giving is becoming systematic and automatic because it is becoming normal; prayer is multiplying; spasms of emotional appeal are being replaced by thorough plans of missionary instruction.
In these fourteen years more than one hundred thousand mission study classes have been held. Over two million members of these classes are now occupying positions of leadership in churches.
Thousands have attended the conferences of 1916; many thousands have been addressed during this last year by the secretaries; thousands have attended the study classes, institutes and conventions in which these secretaries have taken part and more than one million individuals have been reached by the printed material which has been distributed.
CONTROL COMING TO SOUTH
Slowly but surely the balance of political power is shifting from the northern part of the state to Central and Southern California. Based on the vote cast in the last general election Southern California will gain five senators and eleven assemblymen when the 1921 classification is made.
Central California will hold its present number, with a possible gain of one senator and two assemblymen. As there can be no increase in the Doan's Kidney Pill Mrs. Daniel had. Props., Buffalo, N.

STATE CAPITOL NOTES
Though registered voters stayed away from the polls to have changed general results on the November ballot according to figures taken from the Statement of Vote, just issued by Secretary of State Jordan. Out of the 168,588 voters who were qualified but did not vote, probably the good after-election figurers can tell how and where the state might have been swung to the republican column, but it's all over with, so what's the use? There were 1,314,416 men and women registered, but 1,045,858 voted, which is a little less than 75 per cent turn out.
Although it has been said that less campaigning was done for president than some of the other issuer, the combined vote for the highest electors of all parties amounted to within 46,442 of the total vote cast, while the U.S. senatorship was overlooked by 94,902 voters. Of the seven amendments, the prohibition issues were of paramount interest, only 71,019 scratching No. 1 and 79,303 failing to vote on No. 2 over which the hottest flight was waged.
There were 366,512 disinterested voters on the $15,000,000 state highway bond issue, and 376,576 passed up No. 4 which was the referendum of the so-
Slowly but surely the balance of political power is shifting from the northern part of the state to Central and Southern California. Based on the vote cast in the last general election Southern California will gain five senators and eleven assemblymen when the 1921 classification is made.
Central California will hold its present number, with a possible gain of one senator and two assemblymen. As there can be no increase in the number of Senators and Assemblymen the bay and mountain district of the north will suffer a loss of six senators and thirteen assemblymen.
At the present time Southern California casts 40 per cent of the total vote of the state, while it has but 30 per cent of the total number of state senators and assemblymen.
Judging by the vote cast for congress, Los Angeles county will receive another congressman and a new congress district will be made in the southern part of the state outside Los Angeles county whe nthe 1921 Federal classification is made.
Harry Chamberlin of Los Angeles received the highest vote case in the state for senator. His vote was 22,-316, and his plurality was 13,567. The number of votes cast in this district is about three times the average vote of the state. This will mean two Senators from the territory now comprising the Thirty-first senatorial district in the next classification.
Nearly 130,000 votes were cast in the Tenth congress district of Los Angeles. This is wive the vote of three congress districts in Northern California.
Eighteen submarines of the L and O types are to be permanently stationed in Southern California waters the coming year.
C. L. Head and wife made a trip to Los Angeles Monday.

All over Anaheim you hear it. Doan's Kidney Pills are keeping up the good work. Anaheim people are telling about it—telling of bad backs made sound again. You can believe the testimony of your own townspeople. They tell it for the benefit of you who are suffering. If your back aches, if you feel lame, sore and miserable, if the kidneys are too frequently, or passages are painful, scanty and off color, use Doan's Kidney Pills, the remedy that has helped so many of your friends and neighbors. Follow this Anaheim woman's advice and give Doan's a chance to do the same for you.
Mrs. Theresa Daniel, 122 S. Claudina St., Anaheim, says: "Whenever I catch cold it seems to settle on my kidneys and brings on attacks of kidney complaint. At times, the pains are quite severe in the region of my kidneys and I can hardly do any stooping or lifting. I feel worn out and tired and do not have much ambition. Doan's Kidney Pills, procured from Mullinix's Drug Store have never failed to fix me up in fine shape."
Price 50c, at all dealers. Don't simply ask for a kidney remedy—get Doan's Kidney Pills—the same that Mrs. Daniel had. Foster-Milburn Co., Props., Buffalo, N.Y.
James Mann, who was arraigned in superior court Monday pleaded not guilty to two charges of forgery. He is alleged to have forged the name of E. Gebhardt, of this city, to two checks. The trials were set for January 15th and 16th. Attorney John Clarkson will represent Mann in one case and Attorney H. Cailor in the other.

The American Beet Sugar company factory at Oxnard, during the campaign just closed, turned out 1,150,000 bags of sugar, or about 250,000 more than in any previous season.
The County highway commission of this county states that the county has a total of more than 100 miles of paved roads.

The proud mother was showing off her son to a neighbor.

"Dear me," he said. "And have you tried everything?"

Rev. Charles H. Spurgeon's keen wit was always based on sterling common sense. One day he remarked to one of his sons:
"Can you tell me the reason why the lions didn't eat Daniel?"
"No, sir. Why was it?"
"Because the most of him was backbone and the rest was grit."

In Illinois experimenters found that once the corn roots were fully established in the soil their attraction for the moisture was so great that very little moisture escaped. The only cultivation then found valuable was to keep down the weeds which used up the moisture. Three fourths of the corn roots do not go deep, but establish themselves in the cultivated soil, and the less they are disturbed at their meals the better crop results are attained.
