CO. L MUST BE RECRUITED OR DISBAND TWENTY-FIVE NEW MEMBERS REQUIRED OR IT WILL CEASE TO EXIST UNDER THE NEW FEDERAL LAW MEN WILL RECEIVE PAY FOR DRILLING Company L, Seventh regiment of Santa Ana must have about twenty-five new enlistments, or there will be no Company L very soon. By reason of the decision of eight or ten members not to sign the enrollment under the new federal military act and by the removal of others from this section, the enlistment of Company L under the new act is only forty. In order to hold a place as a company the enrollment must be sixty five. According to a statement by Col. J. J. Borree of Sacramento, acting adjutant general, every member of the National Guard of California who has not come into the guard under the new national defense act by the 1st of January will be given his discharge from the service. Col. Borree said he hopes all present guardsmen will come in under the new law, which requires a new oath and places the men in the reserve for three years after completing their terms of service. Whether any or all small areas that might be used for agricultural purposes in the National Forests of California. After the timber is sold and cut, this land will be listed and thrown open to settlement under the forest homestead law. Experiments made recently by the forest service in California demonstrated that the block-sulphur match, often called the "chiny match" is safer to use in the forest than the common parlor match. It was discovered that the burning sulphur match when thrown away almost invariably goes out before touching the ground, while the parlor match, even of the kinds chemically treated, often holds its flame for a few moments. This advantage of the sulphur match over the parlor match is said to be due to the comparative smallness of the former's stick. What is said to be the first wireless telegraph message sent from any forest service station in the United States was recently transmitted by a forest ranger on the Apache national forest, Arizona from the Base Line Ranger Station to Clifton, Arizona, a distance of 40 miles. TOURNAMENT OF ROSES At Pasadena, New Year's Day, Jan. 1 The twenty-eighth annual mid-winter floral pageant will start promptly at 10:15 A.M. New features will give this unique and charming spectacle a splendor and magnificence never before attained. A football classic, a championship game between teams from the East and West—the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Oregon—will be played at Tournament park at 2:15 o'clock. Gridiron stars of national prominence will be seen in action. A massed band concert, with half a jutant general, every member of the National Guard of California who has not come into the guard under the new national defense act by the 1st of January will be given his discharge from the service. Col. Borree said he hopes all present guardsmen will come in under the new law, which requires a new oath and places the men in the reserve for three years after completing their terms of service. Whether any or all the militamen take this action by the first of the year, however, those who fail to do so will be given their discharge. "California will have a new National Guard after the first of the year," said Col. Borree. "Many of the men of the old guard, and officers as well, are coming in under the new law. We expect to build up the guard with the help of the old members who take an interest in he training. We are encouraging as many as possible of the old members to return. This much is certain: There will be a California National Guard. The reports I am receiving show that many are joining." "Many new men are going in, and this is a good sign. We want as many new men as possible, and with these added to the old members the start will be far from discouraging." Under the new law both officers and men are under pay. They are paid at the rate of about one-fourth of the regular army schedule. Capt. Holderman and Lieuts. Ford and Swanner are not overlooking the seriousness of Company L's position. They know that there has to be an added enrollment else the company will lapse. It is their intention to organize a campaign for membership within a short time. Active steps toward getting new enlistments has been delayed pending the arrival of enlistment blanks. The federal defense act requires an enlistment for six years. Three years of the six is for active service as members of the national guard, and three years as members of the reserve. During the three years of national guard work there will be drills once every week. No services will be required during the three years of reserve, though the soldier is subject to call in case his services are needed. A feature of the federal defense act is that everyone will be paid for drills. Enlisted men will get twenty-five per cent of the pay of the regular army men, provided they attend drills. Big Engineering Job Performed by Former Anaheim Boy Gus Benners, formerly of Anaheim, son of Joseph Bennerscheidt, has been making a national reputation as a civil engineer. His latest big job was turning a Washington brewery into an apple juice plant. When Washington and Oregon went dry, not even permitting the manufacture of alcoholic beverages, the manufacture of beer was the one industry hard hit by the dry law. One of the largest and most widely known breweries plants closed by the law was the one at Olympia, Wash. This enterprise, with its subsidiary plants at Bellingham, Wash., and Salem, Ore., founded by the late Leopold Schmidt, one of the pioneer brewers of the country, was worth considerably more than $1,000,000, and the fame of its product and its slogan, "It's the water," had spread all over the West. What to do with this property to keep it in use was the problem to be solved. With the increase in consumption of nonalcoholic beverages and fruit juices it was seen that people still became thirsty and drank as usual; only the character of the drink was changed. Various smaller plants had gone into making fruit juices with some degree of success, and this year the large brewery plant at Olympia was added, though in making the change thousands of dollars in machinery and new equipment was spent to put the plant in shape. Today it is the largest apple juice plant in the world, and the products Company, Schmidt is manage. In altering the p brewery equipment motive power and used. A feature of the federal defense act is that everyone will be paid for drills. Enlisted men will get twenty-five per cent of the pay of the regular army men, provided they attend drills. "Pay for the private who misses no drills," said First Lieut. A. K. Ford, "will be $3.75 per month, $5.25 for corporals and $7.50 for sergeants. There will be forty-eight drills per year. Pay will be deducted according as a man misses drill." While the company was still at Nogales, opportunity to sign the roll under the new law was given, and forty-nine members of the company enlisted under the new law. Eight or ten declined to sign, saying that they had already given three years to the work and they did not care to sign up for three more with a possibility of six more. Since the company returned to Santa Ana a number of its members have moved to other places, and the men are no longer available for active membership here in the company. "We will need about twenty-five men," said Second Lieut. Swanner. FOREST NOTES The cost of making sales of government timber on the National Forests in California was cut from 39 cents to 31 cents a thousand feet recently. This decrease is due to time studies resulting in more efficient methods of handling and will mean a saving of thousands of dollars annually to the national treasury. An effort is being made by the forest service to sell the timber on the juices it was seen that people still became thirsty and drank as usual; only the character of the drink was changed. "Shy" Huntington, Oregon's 178-pound quarterback; Hollis Huntington, full-back; Parsons, right half-back; Bartlett, right tackle, and Captain Beckett, left tackle, are all stars for Oregon. In the Washington state game which Oregon won 12 to 3, Bartlett received the first kick off and ran through the Washington State team fifty-five yards. Two plays put the ball into a favorable position from which "Shy" Huntington place kicked a goal. Captain Beckett made a similar run after a later kick off. R. C. Folwell, coach of Pennsylvania is a great exponent of the forward pass and of open play generally, and the Tournament of Roses game is sure to be marked by brilliant dashes. The Oregon team has an unusually high average weight. BIG FOOTBALL GAME The University of Oregon football eleven, which has been selected by the Tournament of Roses association football committee to meet the University of Pennsylvania on New Years day, is conceded by all experts to be the strongest team in the West. Coach Doble's "undefeated" Washington eleven felt very lucky to emerge from the Oregon game with a scoreless tie. Coach Doble himself admitted the superiority of the Oregon team, and this superiority showed up also in the team records for 1916 on which the Tournament committee based its decision.
