the registration for the outlying sections at 8398. The registration of the various parties was not segregated, but basing his estimated on the figures announced following the close of registration for the August primary, Mr. Williams estimated the Republican registration is about twice that of the Democratic party. Orange county's total registration of 24,704 is 6776 greater than the total registration of Riverside county, which has 17,925. While the county's registration is greater than Riverside county's, Riverside has a registration of 7692 and Santa Ana 6948. One of the Riverside papers is estimating population on a basis of two and a half persons for every registered voter. On that basis Orange county would have a population of 60,350, Santa Ana 17,375, and Anaheim 5125. RIMPAU'S WILL The will of Adolph Rimpau was filed for probate Monday morning by Attorney H. G. Ames. ANAHEIM GAZETTE—THURSDAY, OCT. 26 RAMONARETURNS TO NEW GRAND THEATRE WILL BE SEEN SUNDAY AT BOTH MATINEE AND NIGHT PERFORMANCES TONIGHT, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY EXCELLENT PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN ARRANGED Theatre goers in northern Orange county will remember that the New Grand's baptismal performance was Ramona, and that on two nights and an afternoon the house was jammed to its utmost capacity. Owing to numerous requests for its return Manager Mozart will present it again, the date being Sunday, Oct. 29, afternoon and night. In addition to being one of the most wonderful plays on the screen Ramona is of particular interest to the people of this region, as some of the chapters in Mrs. Jackson's famous story depicted scenes in this county. It is a remarkable story but the most remarkable fact is that it is founded on facts, and that Ramona is still living among her people, the Hopi Indians. It goes without saying that the charm and gripping suspense of the incidents of Ramona which have resulted in the sale of 3,800,000 copies of Mrs. Jackson's book, supply the ingredients for a marvelous film drama. In taking advantage of these, W. H. Clune, the man with the financial courage to worthily bring to life Ra- Our Low Rent Makes It Possible for Us To SAVE YOU From 5c to 10c a Pair on All Stockings School stockings a specialty White, Black, Tan or Red Opera House Store Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hiles his hatred is clearly and convincingly registered. Later, when she becomes a Spanish dancer, we are shown his unshaken devotion worshiping at her shrine. Mr. Moreno has been able to give us a strong, dramatic characterization, which is quite worthy of a star of his prestige and popularity. Smoot quoted the following from Bradstreet's at the end of 1913: "Nineteen hundred and thirteen was a year of disquiet and disappointment alike in foreign and domestic finance, trade, and industry. The disquiet was world-wide, though until the latter part of this year not so much in evidence at home as abroad." A quotation from Bradstreet's at the end of the first three months of 1914 says: * * "Sentiment in the iron and steel trades is even less favorable than it was. This is directly traceable to the fact that demand is exceptionally light and because of retrenchments by some of the leading railways. * * * Pig iron is very dull, and prices on southern grades are lower. * * * The quarterly report of failures and liabilities is not very encouraging. There were more failures in March than a year ago, and the liabilities were likewise the largest ever reported in that month. The first quarter's total is larger than a year ago, and larger than in any previous first quarter since 1896." Bringing the record down to a date one month prior to the outbreak of the war, Senator Smoot quoted the following from Bradstreet's of July 4, 1914: "Good and excellent crop reports, quieter distributive trade, and dull and depressed industry and manufacture are the salient features of this week's advices. * * Collection this week are rather slow, though crop movements may tend to improve this. * * Failures for six months of 1914 number 7,745, a total of 8.4 per cent larger than last year and 2.4 per cent heavier than in 1908. Liabilities for six months aggregate $149,969,754, a sum of 31 per cent larger than a year ago." Thus, from an entirely non-political source, this and much other conclusive evidence was produced, showing that It goes without saying that the charm and gripping suspense of the incidents of Ramona which have resulted in the sale of 3,800,000 copies of Mrs. Jackson's book, supply the ingredients for a marvelous film drama. In taking advantage of these, W. H. Clune, the man with the financial courage to worthily bring to life Ramona's beloved figures; Lloyd Brown, his associate, who supervised the making and staging of the pictorial version, and Donald Crisp, versatile director, have adhered to the letter and spirit of the book in a way that will please its most ardent admirers. The costumes for Ramona are beautiful and authentic, requiring months of study and labor to make. The music also represent months of labor, being largely original symphonic score, "cued" to every scene of the drama, which will be rendered by a large augmented orchestra with much the same care that is bestowed upon grand opera. Tonight will be presented "The Weakness of Strength," by Edmund Breese. An unusually strong cast will be seen in support of Mr. Breese, the eminent dramatic star. Clifford Bruce, himself a star and the leading man in many important stage and screen productions, has the part of Bill Jackson, the rival and sworn enemy of Dan Gaynor, the character portrayed by Mr. Breese. Hawley famous as the "Belle of the Navy" and long the most popular star of the Lubin studios, has the leading female role, while Evelyn Brent, one of the most popular young actresses on the screen, who has been seen with Mr. Breese in most of his recent offerings on the Metro program, has the ingenuent part. Others in the cast are little Florence Moore and Clifford B. Gray. The story of "The Weakness of Strength" is one of the most dramatic which Mr. Breese has ever had in his long career on the stage and screen, and deals with the consuming and ruthless ambition of Dan Gaynor, a Maine lumberman, and his rise to success at the expense of everything which most people hold dear. How he sacrifices the woman he loves and is hated by all who come in contact with him in his climb up the ladder of success until in the end all he has invested from his hatred is clearly and convincingly registered. Later, when she becomes a Spanish dancer, we are shown his unshaken devotion worshiping at her shrine. Mr. Moreno has been able to give us a strong, dramatic characterization, which is quite worthy of a star of his prestige and popularity. Never before has the Spanish senor been so wonderfully portrayed—the spirit of Sunny Spain coursing through his veins is reflected clearly in his interpretation. PRESIDENT WILSON'S RECORD That the hand of Woodrow Wilson has been the guiding hand in the legislative achievements of the democratic congress was asserted by Secretary of War Baker in a recent speech in Kentucky. Passing over the fact that Mr. Baker was absent from his post on a political mission at a time when important matters at the war department were seriously impeded by his absence, we hasten to say that no republican wishes to deprive the president of whatever glory there may be in the secretary's declaration. On the contrary, republicans everywhere are as anxious as Mr. Baker is to establish the President's responsibility for the legislation of the past three years. We want Wilson to take responsibility for the shameful extravagance of that period for the vicious evasion of the civil service requirements which has characterized the creation of all the new commissions and bureaus which have been stuffed with "deserving democrats," for the persistence with which government ownership and government competition with individual enterprises have been forced upon congress and upon the statute books, for all of the too numerous enactments hostile to the spirit of American industrial progress—and especially for the Adamson law, which establishes nothing in the way of a working day but imposes a nannual tax of more than $60,000,000 upon the people who use railroads or who use things which a railroad train transports. We have no issue with Secretary Baker on the point which he has raised. In fact, we hope that he and all the other democratic orators and writers will continue to emphasize his hatred is clearly and convincingly registered. Fallures for six months of 1914 number 7,745, a total of 8.4 per cent larger than last year and 2.4 per cent heavier than in 1908. Liabilities for six months aggregate $149,969,754, a sum of 31 per cent larger than a year ago." Thus, from an entirely non-political source, this and much other conclusive evidence was produced, showing that industrial depression exister prior to the outbreak of the war, and that the democratic tariff, encouraging imports and discouraging exports, was responsible. THE POLITICAL SITUATION Below will be found a table of the states with a prediction as to how the electoral vote of each state will be cast for president Tuesday, November 7th. There are four of the eastern states that most of the Democratic authorities, and some of the Republican political forecasters, are placing in the doubtful column, but the table below credits them to the Republican candidate. These states are New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Indiana. With these four states will most likely go the presidency, as the electoral vote totals 98. It is said that the conditions existing are most unusual, and that the vote of the past has little to do with what the voters will do at the presidential contest next month. However, the writer does not remember a time when the same statements were not made just prior to such occurrences. The political situation prior to presidential elections is something like the weather—nearly always unusual, while, as a matter of fact, there is very little change when comparisons are made. Just why the Empire state should be placed in the doubtful list is difficult to figure out, as it has but on one occasion cast its electoral vote for a Democrat by a substantial majority against a united Republican party in the past 40 years. Samuel J. Tilden, in 1876, was the man who won by a same margin over Rutherford B. Hayes. Grover Cleveland carried the state in 1884 by less than 1200 votes and won the presidency by it. Mr. Cleveland was again successful in 1892, but there was a division in the Republican party that Strength" is one of the most dramatic which Mr. Breese has ever had in his long career on the stage and screen, and deals with the consuming ambition of Dan Gaynor, a Maine lumberman, and his rise to success at the expense of everything which most people hold dear. How he sacrifices the woman he loves and is hated by all who come in contact with him in his climb up the ladder of success until in the end he finds that all he has wrested from the blood and tears of others is nothing, and the things he valued least are the dearest after all. His final regeneration forms a novel climax to a story of unusual strength and artistic appeal and affords Mr. Breese a vehicle which gives the widest range to his notable dramatic powers. Friday and Saturday the chief play has rather a peculiar title, but it is said to be an excellent production. Elsie Jane Wilson and Rupert Julian will be shown in "The Evil That Women Do," in a five act play of intrigue, revenge and retribution. Two more reels of "Liberty" will also be presented, and if you care to get an insight into real conditions as they are today on the Mexican border, you should see this. A return engagement of that sensational production, "Where are my Children," will be given Monday night, Oct. 31, and owing to many requests the management will again present "The Tarantula," with Edith Storey as the leading artist. The Spanish star, Antonio Moreno, of the Vitagraph players, is perfectly at home in "The Tarantula" Mr. Moreno plays the role of Pedro Mendoza—of Cuba. When his sweetheart Chonita, played by Miss Storey, becomes infatuated with an American, actsments hostile to the spirit of American industrial progress—and especially for the Adamson law, which establishes nothing in the way of a working day but imposes a nannual tax of more than $60,000,000 upon the people who use railroads or who use the things which a railroad train transports. We have no issue with Secretary Baker on the point which he has raised. In fact, we hope that he and all the other democratic orators and writers will continue to emphasize the matter. DEPRESSION BEFORE WAR BEGAN In a speech a few days ago Senator Oscar Underwood made the amazing statement that times were good in this country just prior to the outbreak of war in Europe. He was trying to make his audience believe that the democratic tariff law had not injured American industry, and that the depression was due to the war. Fortunately, the people of the United States are not dependent upon political speakers, either democratic or republican, for the facts upon this question. Shortly before congress adjourned, Senator Smoot of Utah, made an extended address on the tariff, the extravagance of the administration, and the revenue laws enacted, and, in the course of his remarks, placed before the senate the statements of a non-political commercial agency regarding business conditions at a time when no one even suspected the possibility of war. Those statements were taken from Bradstreet's and were published before war was even discussed. The war began very suddenly August 1, 1914. The Underwood tariff law had been enacted October 3, 1913. Senator Samuel J. Tilden, in 1876, was the man who won by a same margin over Rutherford B. Hayes. Grover Cleveland carried the state in 1884 by less than 1200 votes and won the presidency by it. Mr. Cleveland was again successful in 1892, but there was a division in the Republican party that year, and James B. Weaver, the Populist and greenbacker, received more votes in the electoral college than President Taft did four years ago. It is true President Wilson won in New York in 1912, but the combined Republican vote was close to 200,000 greater than that of the successful candidate. Therefore, New Yorkers have consistently voted the Republican ticket at presidential elections, and no good reason can be assigned why they will not do so next month. Not since 1872 has New York voted against a candidate who was a resident of that state, whose name appeared on the ballot of either the Republican or Democratic parties, and that was on account of the Democrats having endorsed Horace Greeley, the Liberal Republican candidate, and many refused to vote at all. Indiana, the old Hoosier Dominion, has been one of the political battlefields of the nation for a generation, and will probably continue to be so for some time to come, although an analysis of the vote of the past 50 years shows about the same chance for the Republican candidate as does that of New York. Only three times in the last half century have the Indianans favored the Democratic candidate for president—in 1876, when Thomas A. Hendricks of Indiana, one Willard STORAGE BATTERY TRADE MARK REGISTERED Who Pays? That’s the title of a valuable little booklet on Willard Service. Again in 1884, Hendricks was the vice-presidential candidate with Cleveland, and the state was safely Democratic. Since that time no Democartic candidate for the presidency has been accorded the electoral vote of Hoosierdom, except President Wilson, and that was due solely to a divided Republican party, as the combined vote of Roosevelt and Taft exceeded that of Wilson by 31,000. There is no more reason to believe that the voters of Indiana have changed their politics during the past four years than that they have changed their religion. The fact that each of the candidates for vice-president are from Indiana adds considerable interest to the paltical field beyond the banks of the Wabash. Fairbanks was second on the ticket in 1900 with McKinley, and carried his home state by a comfortable margin. Marshall was on the ticket in 1912, and the vote was as above indicated. Therefore, it may be put down as a political certainty that Indiana will be found in the Republican column November 7th. New Jersey; the home of President Hughes in most instances will be larger than the estimates. Hughes is credited with 30 states, and Wilson 18. Wilson carried 39 states in 1912 and split the vote of California with Roosevelt. The question of an adequate protective tariff is more of an issue this year than for some time past, and this is the principal reason for prophesying that the states will vote as below indicated. The successful candidate must receive 266 votes. The table below is closer than it may appear, as President Wilson is only 79 votes short of election, but, to be elected, he must receive the vote of New York, Ohio and either Indiana or New Jersey: States for Hughes Popular Electoral Maj. Vote. California .150,000 13 Connecticut .10,000 7 Delaware .1,000 3 Idaho .10,000 4 Illinois .150,000 29 Indiana .15,000 15 Iowa .100,000 13 Kansas .50,000 10 Maine .15,000 6 Massachusetts .50,000 18 Michigan .50,000 15 Minnesota .100,000 12 Montana .100,000 12 Montana .5,000 4 Nebraska .10,000 8 New Hampshire .5,000 4 out, as it has but cast its electoral vote by a substantial margin in the Republican party years. in 1876, was the same margin over Hayes. Grover Cleveland in 1884 by less and won the presidency. Cleveland was again 1922, but there was a Republican party that B. Weaver, the Populcker, received more electoral college than did four years ago. Indent Wilson won in 1812, but the combined vote was close to 200,000 that of the successful before, New Yorkers may voted the Republican presidential elections, ason can be assigned to do so next month. has New York voted date who was a resilient, whose name appears of either the Republican parties, and that of the Democrats have grace Greeley, the Liberal candidate, and many at all. Marshall was on the ticket in 1912, and the vote was as above indicated. Therefore, it may be put down as a political certainty that Indiana will be found in the Republican column November 7th. New Jersey, the home of President Wilson, prior to the contest in 1896, was considered as consistently Democratic as the various states of the so-called Solid South, but since that time when the Boy Orator of the Platte was defeated by William McKinley, New Jersey has always been Republican on presidential years by fair sized majorities. Although the vote of that state, as did the others mentioned, went to the president, it was as a minority candidate, as his vote was more than 56,000 less than that of the two Republican nominees. Therefore, it is difficult to imagine where the Democratic campaign managers find any hope in New Jersey this year. Ohio, the last of the four Democratic doubtful states, has been more consistently Republican than any one of the group of Democratic doubtfuls. In 1892, when the Republican party was split, Grover Cleveland received one electoral vote from Ohio, and, again, at the last presidential election, Wilson carried the state, but was in the minority by close to 50,000 votes. When the party has been united, as it has this year, the Republican majorities have been uniformly large. There is no doubt about Ohio voting for Hughes and Fairbanks. The table below is probably conservative, as it is likely that the major-
