SINGLE TAX AMENDMENT
Constitutional amendment No. 5, commonly called the single tax amendment, to be voted on at the November election, abolishes all forms of taxation, including all corporation and franchise taxes, and places the burden of running state and county governments upon the land. Every farmer and fruit grower in California would be compelled to maintain the government and virtually all corporations, except those owning lands, would be exempt from paying taxes. In fact, personal property would be exempt from taxation, and all forms of licenses, business, liquor and other license taxes would be abolished.
The Citrus Protective League, of which F. Q. Story of Los Angeles is president, voices the opposition of thousands of citrus growers to the proposed law, and is making a vigorous campaign to defeat it.
Though one of the most revolutionary taxation measures ever submitted to any electorate for their decision, Amendment No. 5 is one of the shortest. The language of the bill is being studied with amazement by tax experts all over the country, and by every assessor and tax collector in California. The bill reads as follows:
"Public revenues, state, county, municipal and district shall be raised by taxation of land values exclusive of improvements, and no tax or charge"
THRILLING PLAYS STAGED FOR THE GRAND
"GOD'S HALF ACRE" BY MABEL TALIAFERRO ON SCREEN TONIGHT
ANOTHER GREAT BEATRICE FAIRFAX SHOW MONDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHTS
Tonight at the New Grand theatre will be presented "God's Half Acre," with Mabel Taliaferro in the star role.
"In this play you have three things to talk about. In the first place it is a Metro Picture directed by the great Edwin Carewe, who directed Emily Stevens in "The Soul of a Woman" and "Her Final Judgment" with Ethel Barrymore. Mr. Carewe is the most unique genius in screen production because he always does the unusual.
The next thing of importance is the really great story told in the picture. It is strong, gripping, vital and tremendously tense from the beginning of the first reel to the end of the fifth reel.
Finally and the best feature for this particular production is the star herself, the wonderful Mabel Taliaferro. If you know Metro pictures at all, you have seen "Her Great Price" and "The Snowbird," two pictures in which this star became doubly famous. Her personal charm, her genuine dramatic talents, and her rapidly growing popularity are placing her at the very top of the list of great motion picture stars."

Though one of the most revolutionary taxation measures ever submitted to any electorate for their decision, Amendment No. 5 is one of the shortest. The language of the bill is being studied with amazement by tax experts all over the country, and by every assessor and tax collector in California. The bill reads as follows:
"Public revenues, state, county, municipal and district shall be raised by taxation of land values exclusive of improvements, and no tax or charge for revenue shall be imposed on any labor product, occupation, business or person; but this shall not prevent the assessment of incomes and inheritances to provide funds for old age pensions, mothers' endowments, and workingmen's unemployment and disability insurance.
"Land holdings shall be equally assessed, according to their value for use or occupance, without regard to any work of man thereon; this value shall be determined in municipalities, and whereever else practicable, by the "Somers system," or other means of exact computation from central locations.
"The intent of this provision is to take for public use the rental and site values of land, and to reduce land holding to those only who live on or make productive use of it.
"Conflicting provisions are hereby repealed."
"This proposed law places the issue squarely up to every person who owns a home in California," declared President Story of the Citrus League. "Ours essentially is a fight for our homes. It is the home owner who would be hit."
LOOKS LIKE DEAD LOSS
I must be discouraging to those Italian lemon importers who put up $140,000 for the election of President Wilson and who celebrated the victory with a banquet to Oscar Underwood to see an armed German U-boat patrolling the seaboard off Nantucket lightship.
What the duce is the administration thinking of, to allow a thing like that? How can these Italians realize anything on the campaign investment if these U-boats operate not only in the Mediterranean, but right under the host of New York?
Well, we will have to leave it up to President Wilson to settle with his Italian creditors. Prehensively he will tell
Finally and the best feature for this particular production is the star herself, the wonderful Mabel Tallaferro. If you know Metro pictures at all, you have seen "Her Great Price" and "The Snowbird," two pictures in which this star became doubly famous. Her personal charm, her genuine dramatic talents, and her rapidly growing popularity are placing her at the very top of the list of great motion picture stars. Mabel Tallaferro is a young actress of distinction, charm and a personality that wins favor with the women as well as with the men. She wears clothes that women talk about and imitate.
Friday and Saturday will be presented "The Unattainable, or the Shepherd of the Hills," also two more reels of "Liberty" the American young lady who is giving the Mexican bandits so much trouble.
In "The Unattainable" the hero is shot in the back by a cowardly assassin, who in the heat of anger performs an act which he very soon repents. Taken to the hospital the injured man may only be saved by transfusion of blood. Then it is that the man who shot him steps forward as a volunteer subject for the operation, only to be told that, after the blood test has been made, that his blood would poison the afflicted man.
Then the wife of the victim offers her own life-blood and saves her husband. The process and method of transfusion is photographed as exactly as circumstances will permit in the Bluebird Photoplay, the scene having been made in the hospital at Universal City where the feature was made. In this hospital, maintained for the relief of the large number of people constantly employed at Universal City, is equipped with every modern appliance for effective use in case of sickness or accident and the Bluebird actors had the authentic and perfect equipment of this modern hospital to give effectiveness to the immensely interesting episode.
Sunday night will be presented Lillian Walker in "Hesper of the Mountains." It is a 5-act Vitagraph Blue Ribbon feature, and deals with a sweet cultured girl of the east, born and bred to every luxury, who is forced to go to the rugged and untamed west to earn a livelihood. It's a fine picture.
There will be no vaudeville Monday and Tuesday owing to the carnival of the first reel to the end of the fifth reel.

What the duce is the administration thinking of, to allow a thing like that? How can these Italians realize anything on the campaign investment if these U-boats operate not only in the Mediterranean, but right under the nose of New York?
Well, we will have to leave it up to President Wilson to settle with his Italian creditors. Prehaps he will tell them in his beautifully turned phrases that man proposes and Providence disposes; that he has done the best he could by giving them free admission to American markets, and that he never did agree to give them safe transportation when the deal was made.
The Italians are having a practical demonstration of the ingratitude of republics. Here they have put up a big roll to elect a president. They have not only failed to realize on it, but their president seems headed back to private life and his successor cares nothing for Italian lemon importers or their efforts to turn a more or less honest dollar. There is every indication that by the time the European war is over, a republican tariff wall will have been erected against them. That $140,000 looks exactly like a dead loss.

There will be no vaudeville Monday and Tuesday, owing to the carnival, but Beatrice Fairfax will be shown again in "The Stone God," and Dorothy Kelley will appear in "The Wheels of Justice". Frank Daniels will also be seen in one of his comedies.
"The Stone God" is one of the greatest pictures on the screen. It is another newspaper story and Grace Darling as Beatrice Fairfax plays the part of a female reporter to perfection. It is an interesting plot surrounding a stolen "Buddah," something on the order of Wilkie Collins' "Moonstone," and is full of interest. If you are interested in plays with thrills in them, here is one to your taste.
Recollect there are also matinees to which women and children are especially invited on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
"The Stone God"
Jimmy Barton's city editor handed him a newspaper clipping with the heading "Indian Prince at Baltimore; Rajo Jalbel arrives from Calcutta."
"Interview this fellow," said the city editor.
Jimmy went to the Baltimore, but the Prince refused to see him. While he was talking to the clerk, another Indian arrived and was escorted to the Prince's room. A bell-boy got Jimmy into the adjoining room, and he heard the Prince, his caller and had just returned at the door, a lion room. One of the guard them whispered they should Jimmy overpoison his turban and their excited door. Then a dash for liberty a fight.

ANAHEIM GAZETTE—THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19 1916
GOVERNOR
Hiram Johnson
Republican Candidate for United States Senator
Will speak in Anaheim on Monday Evening
Oct. 23
He will speak in the interest of Hughes and Fairbanks, and will discuss the issues that confront the voters in the present campaign. Mr. Johnson is one of the most brilliant orators in the United States, and should be given an enthusiastic greeting here.
The Necessity for several other Indians discussing a plot to secure possession of a stolen idol and to "avenge Buddha." The only definite information Jimmy got was the address "220 Pelham Road," and the fact that something was to develop that night.
Jimmy returns to his office, defeated. While he is pondering, Beatrice Fairfax enters. She has just received a letter from a girl who tells her that her fiance has quarroled with her father, and asks if it would be right for her to elope. She signs the letter "Dorothy McRay, 220 Pelham Road." Jimmy adn Beatrice note the similarity of the addresses and start off to investigate.
Teh scene shifts to the McRay home and shows the quarrel between Don Jordan and Dorothy's father, Christopher McRay. Jordan threatens the elder man and is ejected from the house. Dorothy goes weeping to her room.
McRay, left alone, opens the door of a vault and brings forth the Stone god. He guards it joyously. He alone knows the combination of the vault. The inner door of the vault connects with an automatic revolver, so that if any other person, without the proper precautions enters the vault he will be greeted by a storm of bullets.
McRay's memory takes him back to his bridal trip. The scene shows him with Dorothy's mother in India. In a jungle temple his bride sees a wonderful image of Buddha and longs to possess it. McRay offers to buy the god from the priest, who indignantly ejects him from the temple. A fight follows. That night McRay returns to the temple, overpowers the priest and steals the stone god. The priest, All Rajo Jaibel, takes an oath that Buddha will be avenged.
The scene again shows McRay in his library, haunted by his memories. With a sigh he returns the stolen god
the issues that confront the voters in the present campaign. Mr. Johnson is one of the most brilliant orators in the United States, and should be given an enthusiastic greeting here.
The Necessity for Protection
The Mexican situation, and other questions of vital importance to the people of California, will be discussed by him.
While this tragedy was ending, Don had gained entrance to the rear of the house to meet Dorothy who had agreed to elope with him. Hearing the shots in the library, he hurried there. The only thing that met his gaze was McRay lying dead, and on the floor a knife. A maid hurried in, rushed screaming from the room and summoned help. Don had picked up the knife and was gazing at it in horror when the police arrived. With them came Beatrice and Jimmy, who had just reached the house. Don was arrested for the murder, despite the protests of Jimmy and Beatrice.
Jimmy had learned the rendezvous of the East Indians and hurried there with Beatrice, satisfied that through them the mystery could be solved. The plotters were assembled and were listening to a recital of the tragedy by one of All's aides who had accompanied him to the McRay residence and had just returned. As they stood at the door, a look-out trapped them. They were hurried into the adjoining room. One of the Indians was left to guard them while the others decided hay they should be killed.
Jimmy overpowered the guard, took his turban and mantle, and passing their excited companions, unlocked the door. Then he and Beatrice made a dash for liberty. They escaped after a fight.
Jimmy and Beatrice again reached of the party interfered when the others threatened her and stood guard while his companions leisurely and systematically searched the house. She succeeded in freeing her feet with a pair of scissors and made her way to the home of H. A. Dickel with the gag still in her mouth and her hands tied behind her. After being liberated she told the story of the burglarly, and officers from all parts of Southern California were speedily put on the scent.
Thursday Mrs. Lehnebach, while walking down Lemon street, noticed four men getting into a jitbus at the station corner of Lemon and Center streets. Two of them she instantly recognized as belonging to the gang which held her up the previous Sunday night. Mrs. Lehnebach was considerably excited on recognizing the men and instead of immediately phoning to police headquarters she ran back home and informed Mr. Langenberger of what she had seen. By the time Gus got in touch with Marshal Kellenberger half an hour's time had been lost. Within half an hour after the stage left, however, the marshal and Mr. Langenberger were in full pursuit. They traveled at the rate of fifty-five miles an hour, and would have overtaken the stage but for a blow out shortly before they reached Los Angeles.
As it was necessary to stop and change a tire Kellenberger phoned to capture the men. They found that one of the men had left the stage at oyle Heights, another at Sixth and Maple, an dthe other two went into the central station. The police expect to nab them in a short time.
There is no question in the mind of Mrs. Lehnebach that two of the men belonged to the party which burglarized the Langenberger house, and it is presumed by the officers that the other two also participated in the hold up. It is evident that they returned to Anaheim for the express purpose of reconnoitering and learnng what the police were doing on the case. Their curiosity came very near proving their undoing. But for the blow-out experienced by Gus Langenberger the stage would have been overhauled and the parties placed under arrest.
Slim Love and Lefty Scoggins, two of California's most noted ballplayers, were visiting in town first of the week. Love pitched the past season for the New York Americans, and he and his wife, who have just come home from the east, came down to visit Mr. and Mrs. Chillie Fisher. Scoggins, the big southpaw pitcher for the Los Angeles Coast league team, who is a friend of the Fisher family, accompanied them.

and had just returned.
Jimmy and Beatrice again reached the McRay home just as Don was being taken away to jail. Jimmy halted the police with the announcement that the real murderer would be found in the vault. When the door was opened Ali was lying on the floor dead, the stone god gazing sadly down upon him.
Don and the weeping Dorothy were reunited and Jimmy and Beatrice left them, happy over the performance of another good deed.

Sergeants Chamberlin and Kern were in Anaheim Monday, dressed in the natty uniform of the United States marines to which branch of the service they are attached. They are recruiting for the marines, and established a recruiting station at the postoffice. They belong at San Francisco, but at present have headquarters at Los Angeles. They expect to return to Anaheim next week and remain here during the five days of the carnival. Recruits who sign up with them will be sent to Mare Island for drill, and afterward assigned to one of Uncle Sam's great warships. These gentlemen were strictly neutral on the subjects of politics and the international war. The only question on which they committed themselves was that they were ready to fight like wild cats in defense of Old Glory.
