CALIFORNIA STATE MINING BUREAU Remarkable Activley In New Oil Development Throughout the State A renewal of drilling activity is indicated by the weekly oil field report of the state mining bureau for the week ending September 9, 1916, there being 31 wells reported as about to begin drilling, making a total of 509 since the first of the year. Such a high number has not been reported since early in July. The meetings will be important and much valuable information is gained through attendance. These meetings are attended by prominent city officials throughout the state and it is the intention to have Anaheim represented. Engineer Steward submitted a map defining locations of the automatic flagmen to be installed on many railroad crossings in the city. The installation of the wig-wags was left to the city engineer and attorney who will take the matter up with the railroad commission, through which body the same must be secured. Fire Chief Elmer Goodrich addressed the board relative to making a change in the chemical engine. He recommends that a pump be installed in place of one of the chemical batteries, greatly increasing the efficiency of the fire engine. It is a new device and is being installed by other cities. Mr. Goodrich also stated by using a 2½ inch hose from the pump to the scene of fire and then connecting to two 1½ inch pieces better results are attained in fighting fire. The 1½ inch hose is easily handled by one man, while the 2½ requires several men to operate. By making these new improvements it is estimated that insurance rates in this city will be decreased at least $6000. The trustees have taken the matter under consideration. Mr. Goodrich took occasion to thank the board for the donation of $20 to defray his expenses to the recent firemens' convention held at San Diego. Mr. Goodrich said much good was derived by all through the interchange of ideas and methods pursued by the chiefs from departments west of Missouri. Jacob Vettér appeared before the board, making complaint about a family of several members who had pitched their tent in the roadway near his residence. He classed their presence as being very unpleasant. Since the 23rd of August seven raids have been made on the smaller towns of the county, but no great amount of loot has been taken. Eleven stores, four postoffices and one bank have been ransacked by the thieves, and they are still at large. The robbers avoid the incorporated cities of the county where they are in danger of running afoul of the police. Two of these raids have been at Placentia, two at Olive, one at Buena Park one at Garden Grove and one at La Habra. That the burglars are amateurs is shown by the fact that they make no attempt to crack safes, merely contenting themselves with rifling cash registers and money drawers. The biggest haul was at Buena Park, where $50 was taken. The last raid so far reported was at Placentia where three stores and the postoffice were ransacked on Tuesday night, Sept. 13, but the only reward was $2:50 in small change taken from the postoffice. E. P. Man- est price in the market. A year ago this variety sold for $95 per ton; Sulitas brought $85 and Muscats $77.50. The prices in any year, of course, depend upon the quality and the demand: According to a government statement, our own people are not yet consuming their rightful share of this wholesome and nutritious fruit. Our per capita of consumption is less than one and a half pounds. In the United Kingdom the consumption is five pounds for each person. When we learn to appreciate the value of this fruit as food, there will necessarily be an enormous increase in production. California today has the countries of the world for a market for her raisin crop. It's a paying crop; an easy crop to handle and ship. GOLD MINING IN THE BOISE BASIN, IDAHO The Boise basin of western Idaho has always been primarily a gold placer region, and for a decade after the discovery of gold there, late in 1862, it is credited with an annual placer production of one to five million dollars. In later years the yield has fluctuated greatly, but in 1912, 1913, and 1914 it still amounted to approximately half a million dollars annually. Many of the veins from which the placer derived their gold were located in the early days and in recent years they have received increasing attention. To meet the many demands for information concerning these lodes the Geological Survey, has just published a reconnoissance report of the region as Bulletin 640-E, which is obtainable on request from the director of the survey, Washington, D. C. According to this report the depression known as the Boise basin has resulted from the sinking of a fault block 15 miles long and 12 miles wide. E. P. Manchester, merchant and postmaster, who sleeps over his store, was awakened in the night and saw a burglar at work in Robinson's drug store on the opposite side of the street. As he had no weapon he did not attempt to capture the man, but telegraphed the sheriff's office at Santa Ana. Shortly afterward a number of officers were on hand, but the burglar had disappeared. The neighborhood was searched, but no traces of them could be found. Presumably the first place entered was Manchester's store. Jimmying two doors, the burglar broke open a drawer in the postoffice, which is in the same building, and took $2.50. They took no stamps. From there they went to the meat market owned by Horace Lucy, pried open the front door and after going through the place, left without taking anything with them. The cash register, left open when the store was closed in the evening was empty. At the A. J. Robinson drug store the burglar gained entrance again with a Jimmy, and contented himself with a bottle of pop. He overlooked a small amount of cash in the drawer. The drugs on the shelves were untouched, dissipating the theory that the long string of thefts in the last month were committed by a drug field. The final attempt made by the burglar was at the Peoples' Store. The Jimmy failed to budge the back door and the thief gave up the job. Manchester was awakened at 3 o'clock. He observed the brief operations of the man in completing his search of the drug store and is certain that no motor-proelled vehicle left town. The bank at Olive was entered the previous night, but only $2.25 in small change was secured. To raise grapes of the best productive value for raisins is a question of considerable importance for the new vineyardist. Since 1892, when the entire raisin crop of California first equaled that of Spain, until then the leading raisin country, the production has increased until today Fresno county alone produces nearly twice as much as Spain. This speaks for the sugar producing effect of the sunshine and other natural climatic conditions of this section. It may be added that ideal conditions for raisin grape culture are to be found in the San Joaquin valley section included within the counties of Fresno, Tulare and Kings. The Fresno country is regarded as ideal for grape culture and especially for raisin grapes, while Riverside and San Bernardino counties offer the best conditions of soil and climate for wine grapes. Sutter, San Diego and Madera counties offer splendid opportunities for the young vineyardist. The last year's crop of raisin grapes was large, amounting to over 180,000 pounds. The Muscat is by far the largest producer. Perhaps five times the amount of any other variety of raisin grape is the proportion of the Muscat crop. Thompson's seedless, Sultanas and Malagas are the other leading varieties. Thompson's seedless raisins usually command the high mineral also occurs sparingly in the gravels at one locality. Henderson, Dentist, Suite 1, Mullinix Bldg., Anaheim. DISTANCE SOMETIMES LENDS ENCHANTMENT It is seen from a circular received from the Home Industry League of California a few days since, that an active campaign has been started to get California people, when buying even the smallest article, to insist on dealers giving them goods bearing a label "Made in California". The mere word imported has up to the present time meant a great deal to some folks, when it really should have meant nothing more than paying an extra price for a purely imaginary excellency. Those folks have been supposing that if their hats, shoes and groceries were imported they could not help but be superior—in grade as well as in price; when, as a matter of fact, the California made articles are, in many cases, really of much higher class—as is shown by the awards won at the Panama Pacific International Exposition—while in most other cases the California goods equal the best of those brought in from abroad. Really now, some people are not much wiser than the prehistoric canine which dropped his hunk of meat in order to get the larger and better hunk which he fancied he saw in the mouth of his exaggerated reflection in the pool of water. BIBLE NOT A SCHOOL BOOK Unable to satisfy the repeated demands for the introduction of Bible study in the public school curriculum or to give the schools some form or decree of supervision over Bible study whether in Sunday school or not, the State Board of Education recently applied to Atty.- Gen. U. S. Webb for an interpretation of the state law, and received a very definite answer to the effect that the Constitution prohibited instruction upon sectarian or denominational doctrines, either directly or indirectly in the schools of the state. The inquiry directed to Webb asked: "May credit be given toward graduation from a California high school for literary and historical study of the Bible when taken in Sunday schools and under other agencies outside of the high school, whether or not under teachers certified by the state?"
