FAITHFUL GATHER TO GREET THE GOVERNOR
FAIR-SIZED AUDIENCE LISTENS TO HIS PATHETIC ADDRESS ON THE DEATH OF HIS PARTY.
CLYDE BISHOP'S EXPLANATION OF HIS REASONS FOR SUPPORTING JOHNSON NOT VERY LUCID
Thursday evening of last week the few remaining local followers of First Mate Hiram Johnson, of the privateer clipper Progress, which black flag vessel was destroyed with practically every soul on board by the exploding of a bomb launched by Terrible Teddy while hove to under close reefed canvas at Chicago last June, gathered at the Grand opera house at Santa Ana to hear details of the tragedy from an eye-witness who could give the story at first hand.
The meeting had been widely advertised and every effort made to collect a crowd, and as Santa Ana is proverbially a great "free show" town, there was a fair sized audience present when the seance began.
Prior to the beginning of the talk fest a few of the faithful gathered at a local restaurant where according to the advertisement Governor Johnson's friends would be permitted to break bread with him and bask in the light of his effulgent presence and incidental progressive party, it became necessary for those of us who wished to stay in political life to choose and make known the candidate whom we intended to support for the presidency, and each was at liberty to make his own separate choice."
And then the governor figuratively took Candidate Hughes by the hand and trotted him back and forward across the stage for the entertainment of the audience, and gave him the full and free Johnsonian endorsement with the single reservation that he will give Mr. Hughes his unswerving support so far as he can do so and when he believes Mr. Hughes' views to be right ones.
Then the governor took a whack at the Los Angeles Times, the San Diego Union and the San Francisco Chronicle and the editors of these papers and touched up the lesser lights of the "poison press" in characteristic style, and with one parting reference to the alleged handicap he labors under in the way of a "loaded primary" he dismissed the crowd with his benediction and quit.
Taken altogether the effort to arouse enthusiasm in the governor's latest line of endeavor was a killing frost and despite the free use of smudge pots handled by the governor's adherents, the budding ambition of the progressive leader is very generally acknowledged to have been severely nipped.
COST OF NEWPORT HARBOR HALF MILLION DOLLARS
That is the Estimate Made by Engineer Charles T. Leeds
It will cost Orange county $500,000 to build a harbor at Newpirt Beach, according to a report being prepared by the highway commission.
This estimate is made by Captain
The meeting had been widely advertised and every effort made to collect a crowd, and as Santa Ana is proverbially a great "free show" town, there was a fair sized audience present when the seance began.
Prior to the beginning of the talk fest a few of the faithful gathered at a local restaurant where according to the advertisement Governor Johnson's friends would be permitted to break bread with him and bask in the light of his effulgent presence and incidentally dig up one plunk each for the privilege.
Thence to the opera house where Dr. C. D. Ball, that well known champion of political righteousness was chosen chairman of the meeting, Rev. J. A. Stevenson, a Presbyterian pastor, who had been scheduled for the place having failed to materialize.
Soon the hall was fairly well filled, as more or less interest had been aroused over the announcement that Hon. Clyde Bishop, former assemblyman for this district had cast his hat in the ring in advocacy of the governor's candidacy for the United States Senatorship, and a considerable number of Bishop's friends were naturally curious to hear the latter's explanation for the sudden change of front. There wasn't any real explanation forthcoming, however, simply a more or less lucid statement of the fact that Bishop proposed to do all he possibly could to forward Governor Johnson's candidacy from now until the last vote is cast. Incidentally Bishop's promise was qualified to carry the understanding that every last progressive in the county shall vote and work for the regular Republican candidates for state senator, congress and assembly, and while perhaps the statement was not made in these exact terms, the plain inference was that Bishop meant just that and nothing less.
Mr. Bishop's political strength is not generally recognized as a serious factor, although he is a more than ordinary forceful platform orator, but people in Orange county remember when, just a few short years ago he renounced the devil and all his works in a spectacular appearance on the stage of the very same opera house, said dissolution of partnership from his Satanic Majesty being his quitting the ranks of the unerrified and casting his lot with the republicans, and as it is proverbial that these eleventh-hour converts are prone to backslide,
COST OF NEWPORT HARBOR
HALF MILLION DOLLARS
That is the Estimate Made by Engineer Charles T. Leeds
It will cost Orange county $500,000 to build a harbor at Newpirt Beach, according to a report being prepared by the highway commission.
This estimate is made by Captain C. T. Leeds, former government engineer, who was employed by the commission. Details of his report will not be made public until the meeting on August 29.
The Harbor Commission is not yet ready to make a formal report to the board of supervisors, but at a conference with that body it was decided to give the public as much information as possible concerning the situation. The harbor commission is investigating with a view to determining how much commerce could be reasonably expected to go through the harbor if it is established.
Newport Beach people have faith in the future of the bay as a harbor. In September Newport Beach is to vote upon a bond issue of $125,000 with which to build a jetty and do some dredging. It is proposed that the county, if it takes any steps at all, shall take up the work where the city leaves off, and make the harbor open to use by commercial vessels as well as by pleasure craft.
There are reasons to believe that the estimate of $500,000, as made by Capt. Leeds, is an outside estimate. He figured the cost of dredging at 10 cents a cubic yard. It is believed that it can be contracted for 7 cents, and that a great deal of the material dredged out can be sold.
William H. Hildebrandt, who died last Wednesday from the effects of a gun shot wound fired with suicidal intent, left an estate valued at $12,000,

Edwards is a candidate for republican nomination.
If Republicans nominate Edwards it means a dual contest between Kettner wet Democrat, and Edwards, Prohibition Republican, with chances all in favor of Edwards.
If someone else is nominated by Republicans, it means a three-cornered fight with Kettner's chances vastly increased.

according to the petition filed by Attorney H. V. Weisel, for appointment as administrator of the estate and for probate of the will. The will was written on July 25th, the day before Hildebrandt shot himself. The estate consists of $10,000 worth of real estate, and $2,000 worth of personal property consisting of money in the bank and notes and mortgages. The sole heir under the will is Augusta Zumkeller, 1226 Octavia street, San Francisco. There are two other nieces named as heirs-at-law, Mrs. Anna Stone, San Francisco, and Mrs. William Baker, New York City. Nina W. Manire and Mrs. T. J. Campbell, of this city, were witnesses to the will.
