UNCLE SAM WILL ASSIST IN FIREFIGHTING GOVERNMENT OFFERS TO PAY HALF THE EXPENSE OF PROTECTION IN ORANGE COUNTY SUPERVISOR SLOANE OF CLEVELAND NATIONAL FOREST SAYS COST WILL BE SPLIT FIFTY-FIFTY Uncle Sam is ready to go fifty-fifty with Orange county in the construc-tion of fire breaks in the Santa Ana mountains. This offer is made through Forest Supervisor Sloane of Escondido, head of the Cleveland National Forest, who was in the county seat last week with Forest Ranger Stephenson of El Toro. “This is the best clothed watershed in Southern California,” said the forest supervisor, “for it has been many years since it was burned over. The fact that it is so thickly covered with brush makes the problem all the more difficult from the standpoint of fire protection, for as it now stands a fire with a strong wind back of it might sweep the range. We might have all the men in the country at our service and we could not do a thing because we could not get to the top of a large number of ridges. “A number of fire breaks have been built, but the system of fire breaks outlined by Forest Ranger Stephenson and approved by the department will...” Local Notes A. Albert Graham made a business trip to Los Angeles Monday. Billy Knott and wife and Ad Schneider were visitors at Seal Beach and Long Beach Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Servatius and Mr. and Mrs. Al Erickson were visitors at the San Diego Exposition last week. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schneider are rejoicing over the arrival of a ten-pound son at their home Friday morning. Gertrude, the 6-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Hopkins, sustained a broken jaw Saturday by the kick of a horse. She was brought to town for medical treatment. Prof. J. L. Van Deveer, wife and daughter, and Rev. David Todd Gillmor started Monday for the Yosemite Valley. They will make a ten-days' trip of it. Mr. and Mrs. John Ziegler and daughters, Misses Elsie and Lucy, Manager Lehman of the Valencia cafe, Mr. Reeves of Los Angeles and Miss Adele Huch were visiting at the county park Sunday. We might have all the men in the country at our service and we could not do a thing because we could not get to the top of a large number of ridges. "A number of fire breaks have been built, but the system of fire breaks outlined by Forest Ranger Stephenson and approved by the department will require probably $15,000 for completion. "The prospect for getting the government to go fifty-fifty with the county in that much needed work are excellent. "I am in a position to offer to go fifty-fifty with the county for the next year's appropriation. We want to know by July 15 what Orange county will do. The truth of it is, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties are willing to and do put up more money on a fifty fifty basis than the federal government will meet. That makes it hard to get anything for our work here o nany other basis than a fifty fifty basis. "The principal difficulty that faces us in considering the matter right now is that unless we get in on the appropriations right now this year, Orange county may not be able to get anything next year or the year following, even if the county offers to put up $10 to the forest service's $1. The forest authorities are making arrangements to place their appropriations, and it behooves us to get as much as possible for our local mountains. "The principles of flood control and water conservation through forest and brush covering is too well known to need discussion. There was a tremendous flow of water in the Santiago creek this last winter, but imagine what would have been the result had not a portion of the water that fell on the mountains been held back by the brush covering. Water that was held back eventually replenishes the underground supply for a part of this country. For the last two years the county has co-operated with the forest service in building of fire breaks and trails in the Santa Ana mountains Last year the county appropriated $500 to the work. Forest Supervisor Sloane makes the offer, and says that it is up to the county, which will be the beneficiary, to consider it and take action upon it. Mr. and Mrs. John Ziegler and daughters, Misses Elsie and Lucy, Manager Lehman of the Valencia cafe, Mr. Reeves of Los Angeles and Miss Adele Huch were visiting at the county park Sunday. George Hatfield entertained a number of his friends at a late luncheon at his home on Resh street Monday night. Many good things to eat and other refreshments, such as cigars and cigarettes were provided by the host, and his bride was made acquainted with some of the boys who claim him as a friend. It was an enjoyable evening, and the night was well spent, when the guests departed. The Ellite club met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Al Nowotny Thursday and spent the afternoon playing the fascinating game of Five Hundred. Mrs. Frank Tausch assisted the hostess in entertaining the guests. The first prize was won by Mrs. H. F. H. Schneider, the second by Mrs. L. F. Pomeroy, the third by Mrs. Max Nebelung and the fourth by Mrs. Herman Stock. Several of Miss Carrie Tubach's friends appeared at her home Thursday evening carrying armloads of cooking utensils, kitchen furniture and many things useful to a newly-married couple just beginning housekeeping. As Miss Carrie had never announced that she contemplated matrimony the affair was a complete surprise to her. The evening was spent with music and games, and wound up with lunchon at eleven o'clock. Sheriff Jackson is circulating among the Mexicans throughout the county, notifying them orally and by posted notices that so long as they remain peaceable and good hombres they will have nothing to fear because of the crisis between the two countries. It is believed that a majority of the Mexicans desire nothing so much as peace. Many of them have had sufficient experience of the ravages of war in their own country. Forest Supervisor Sloane makes the offer, and says that it is up to the county, which will be the beneficiary, to consider it and take action upon it. He says that if the county gets the federal appropriation this year, answer must be given by July 15. Sloane and Stephenson will probably be present at the Associated Chambers of Commerce meeting at Brea on June 28 to present the matter to that organization. The Santa Ana high school will add, next term a year of junior college work. It is expected that at least 40 of this year's graduating class will enter the junior college and take the two year course. An automobile belonging to Dr. W. S. McFarlane was badly wrecked on the Newport road Sunday night, and George Chick and another young man whose name was not learned, accupants of the car, received a number of minor injuries. The boys were returning from Newport when the auto struck an obstruction in the road and turned turtle. The machine was badly damaged. Chick and his companion were brought to their homes in Anaheim. Miss Kathleen O'Brennan, who came down from Los Angeles some weeks ago and lectured on Ireland, and who was the guest of the Ebell club, making a number of friends while here, was engaged to marry Padriac Pearce, the man who for a few days was president of Ireland during the recent revolution. Pearce was one of the first men executed by the English after the fall of the Irish cause. Miss O'Brennan is bitter in her denunciation of the English government for its numerous executions and has pledged her life to the cause of Ireland. Her home is in Dublin. Large quantities of cement pipe are constantly being manufactured here which finds ready market all over Southern California, besides in and around Anaheim and vicinity. D. De Gryse has a large force of men engaged in making cement pipe at his Los Angeles street works, which is guaranteed in every instance. Many other pipe makers are busy, among whom are Ed Kelley, who has the reputation of making pipe that never springs a leak. In the earlier days, before advent of the cement pipe, water was turned into the ditches at the diversion gates up the river, but by the time the water reached this valley the precious fluid was greatly diminished, having been lost by seepage while in transit. Now very few earthern ditches are in evidence and little irrigation water is wasted. Expert piano tuning, F. W. Schmidt. NEW NOTES OF COUNTY Garlepy Got Seven Years:— Frank Garlepy, engineer of the Fullerton waterworks, who was arrested some weeks ago on a white slave charge, pleaded guilty before Federal Judge Anderson in Indianapolis and was sentenced to seven years in the penitentiary, according to information received Monday by Assistant United States District Attorney O'Connor, of Los Angeles. It developed during the course of the trial, that the girl he brought to Fullerton as his wife and by whom he had a child, knew all about his previous martial relations. In coming west, Garlepy deserted a wife and a family of eleven children. Progress in Buena Park:— The Taylor canning company of Los Angeles has bought the Pacific Creamery building and has begun work of rearranging and painting the buildings. In the can factory the upper timbers have been removed, leaving one large room, which, when the company puts in an attractive open front on Grand avenue, will be an ideal situation for an automobile garage or for some similar purpose. The California Vegetable Union has rented the warehouse adjoining, where at present they have stored shook and boxes and will use it for a packing house when the tomato season opens. Shot By Her Husband:— Mrs. Julius Lopez has a 44-calliber rifle bullet hole through her left thigh. The bullet came from a rifle in the hands of her husband, who lives near Wintersburg. The woman and her sister say that Lopez came home intoxicated Saturday night, quarreled, and fired, the powder burning the clothing of the wife. Lopez declares We've Cut Lots On What Theo. The woman and her sister say that Lopez came home intoxicated Saturday night, quarreled, and fired, the powder burning the clothing of the wife. Lopez declares he was showing the rifle to a friend who wanted to buy it and it was discharged accidentally. Sheriff Jackson and three deputies hunted for Lopez Saturday night. The man was arrested by Marshal Tingley at Huntington Beach on Sunday. Lights at Seal Beach:— A seven-mile lighting system representing an investment of $35,000 has just been completed by the Southern California Edison company for Seal Beach. The system includes a substation at the outskirts of the town with feeders installed along the ocean front. The high voltage wires of the system enter the city from the north, extending from the Los Alamitos system, six miles away. Fire at Placentia:— An alarm of fire was sounded at Placentia Sunday evening about 9 o'clock when the residence of Ivan Reader was discovered partially in flames. Just before the flames were discovered an explosion was heard but no one, apparently, has been able to learn the cause. Many willing hands alded, as best they could, to save the household effects, but the fire raged so that only a small portion of the goods were saved. A piano was the most valuable article that was carried from the burning building. It was badly damaged however. About $35 in cash and all cooking utensils, etc., were destroyed. The house and contents were partially insured and the loss will be severely felt by Mr. Reader.
