BELGIAN RELIEF COMMISSION ACTIVE WILL RAISE $70,000 TO FEED SUFFERING PEOPLE ONE DAY ALL THE PROVISIONS WILL BE CALIFORNIA FRUIT AND GRAIN Generous California citizens are to assume the gigantic task of feeding for one day all the millions of destitute people of Belgium and Northern France. The plan, conceived by a group of San Francisco citizens now banded together under the title of the San Francisco Business Men's committee has received the hearty endorsement of the Commission for Relief in Belgium, of which Herbert C. Hoover is the head. Last week the plan was formally inaugurated and it is to include every nook and cranny of the state. Early in August, which month will mark the second anniversary of the great war, it is proposed to offer a gift from California. This gift will be food enough to feed the starving people of Belgium and Northern France for one day, and that day is to be known as California Day, for Herbert C. Hoover a California man, has agreed such a day shall be proclaimed, as an appreciation of California's generosity. The shipment of California products will also stand as a token of respect to those other Californians who have taken such a leading part in the commission and her attractions. Thousands of Oregonians winter in California, and they are insisting on Californians returning the visit in summer. Oregon claims to be the summer playground of America. The special trains bearing representatives to the highest law making body of the order will begin to reach Portland on July 31. That night the first reception will be tendered to Supreme Chancellor Brig. S. Young, his supporting officers and distinguished visitors. Tuesday will stage a great parade in which 15 magnificent floats will appear to represent the agriculture, horticulture, animal industry and mineral wealth of the Pacific coast. A float is to be devoted to the citrus fruits of California. In the line will be the Uniformed Rank of the order, dozens of drill teams from various lodges of teh Northwest and a section devoted to the Dokies, the dramatic order Knights of Khorassan occupying the same relation to Knights of Pythias that the Shrine does to Masonry. Wednesday all visitors will be taken on an inspection of the Columbia river highway, claimed to be the greatest scenic road in America, and which has just been completed at a cost to Portland of over $2,000,000. It pierces the gorge of the Columbia river, that 47 mile stretch being bordered with water falls, cliffs and canyons of stupifying beauty. It is a paved highway hanging on cliffs, surmounting mountains, crossing canyons on bridges that hang high in the air and are of splendid types of architecture. One-half the delegation will be taken to Multnomah falls and Booneville by auto and the other half by river boat. After serving a salmon dinner the Pythians will reverse modes of transportation and return to the city. August 5 and 6 will be devoted to Seaside and Astoria. At the former by product. This gift will be food enough to feed the starving people of Belgium and Northern France for one day, and that day is to be known as California Day, for Herbert C. Hoover a California man, has agreed such a day shall be proclaimed, as an appreciation of California's generosity. The shipment of California products will also stand as a token of respect to those other Californians who have taken such a leading part in the commission's work. The list is headed by Hoover, chairman of the commission. It is to be a California project and it means just this: sending forward $70,000 worth of California grain, wheat, corn, rice, beans, barley, peas, sugar, condensed and evaporated milk. These will be the essentials and the amount is fixed at $70,000, for that is the amount required to feed the starving non-combatants, the old men, women and children for one day. The appeal is to be to all people of California. It is an absolutely neutral appeal, for the work of the commission for relief in Bedglum has been endorsed by all leading nations, by Germany, France, England, Russia, Japan, Austria, the United States and others. And the need is great. Hoover in his most recent report says the rations it is now possible to supply to the stricken non-combatants "will not support life." He says the supply of meat and potatoes is exhausted and reaches this tragic conclusion: "In conclusion, I feel my entire inability to draw an adequate picture of the unutterable depression and despair of these people. The C. R. B. is the only link to their kindred, and we are thus the mouthpiece by which they may express to you their prayers for more help. "The C. R. B. which for more than a year has been ceaselessly endeavoring to alleviate this mass of misery, is now forced to appear as an instrument of torture, since daily we must refuse the pleadings of a people whose sufferings will yet be told in terms reflecting neglect for which we are now daily blamed." It was the tragedy of this statement from Hoover that prompted the organization of the San Francisco committee and the inaugurating by it of a strenuous campaign to include all parts of the State. This committee has addressed a letter to every chamber of commerce and board of trade in the state asking it to coordinate and receive contributions. After serving a salmon dinner the Pythians will reverse modes of transportation and return to the city. August 5 and 6 will be devoted to Seaside and Astoria. At the former the biggest clam bake ever held on the Pacific coast will be pulled off. The clams are now being herded, the oysters fed and the crabs rounded up. Arrangements are being made for 30,000 extra bathing suits to be shipped to the beach to care for the crowds. Each day of the convention special features are planned for the entertainment of the Knights of Pythias who will be there, but who cannot participate in the sessions of the grand lodge. Portland has provided a general arrangements committee of which Senator Gus Moser is chairman to handle the preparations. Committees will be located at the depots and at an up town headquarters to register all arrivals and to provide them with visitors credentials. Hotel arrangements will be made for any visitor who wishes to communicate with him in advance. Special rates are made on all railroads for the convention, but for those who desire to get personal knowledge of the country and who can travel with autos, the word has gone out that the Pacific highway is in the best condition it has ever been. From the highway numerous side trips are available into the big pine forests, to the trout streams and to the big game hunting grounds. Near Medford is Crater lake and across the hill is Klamath lake and White Pelican lodge. To the north of Portland lies Rainer national park. To the east is Mt. Hood and the famous inns along its glaciers. The supreme lodge meetings offer a splendid opportunity for an outing, and Portland stands ready to play the host in the magnificent way it always does. It was the tragedy of this statement from Hoover that prompted the organization of the San Francisco committee and the inaugurating by it of a strenuous campaign to include all parts of the State. This committee has addressed a letter to every chamber of commerce and board of trade in the state asking it to cooperate and to receive contributions of foodstuffs or money to buy them. All the dozens of committees that have been organized in California to aid in extending relief to Belgium and Northern France have been important to lend their assistance. As rapidly as possible it is proposed to supplement these broad requests to organizations with direct appeals to individuals. KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS TO MEET AT PORTLAND Supreme Lodge to Convene in Northern City August 1 to 10 August 1 to 10 the supreme lodge Knights of Pythias of the world will convene in Portland, Oregon, and an invitation is out from the general committee on arrangements to all Pacific Coast Pythians to gather at Portlond to participate in the gigantic program that is being prepared for the entertainment of representatives to the supreme lodge and all visiting Knights and their families. California Knights are particularly invited for the reason that Portland is endeavoring to encourage the establishment of a great circle trip of the entire Pacific coast for tourist travelers, and its backers want Californians to better know the Beaver FINDING POTASH IN CEMENT ROCK AND IRON ORE The manner in which the war in Europe is helping to bring out the undeveloped resources and some products that were heretofore unknown here, has been often noted. It remained for an accident, coupled with some factory regulations, in which the war had no part, to develop what may prove a most important utilization of byproducts. It is announced that the very much needed, and scarce, potash is being extracted from the dust of the cement factories. This country uses large quantities of potash for fertilizing the farm lands. Especially is it essential to the cotton growers of the Southern states. Germany was the source of supply before the war, and about twenty million dollars was paid annually to that country for this commodity. When the complaints of the dust from the cement mills throughout the country caused the mill men to seek some method of controlling the evil, they adopted a process primarily intended to arrest and precipitate the fumes from smelters. It was found to be not only effective in controlling the dust, but in the precipitated product there was a large percentage of potash. Instead of the elimination of the dust nuisance being a costly proceeding, it was exceedingly profitable to the cement mill owners. Even in mills which are so located that they do not have to bother about the dust injuring or inconveniencing their neighbors, it is found profitable to say this valuable ANAHEIM GAZETTE—THURSDAY, JUNE 22, 1916 Motor oil made from asphalt-base crude gives best lubrication with least carbon. Such is the testimony of motorists and experts alike. As Lieut. Bryan, U.S.N., puts it: "Oils made from the asphalt-base crudes have shown themselvestobemuch better adapted to motor cylinders, as far as their carbon-forming proclivities are concerned, than are paraffine-base Pennsylvania oils." RECORD WELL The Union Oil company brought in their Hole No. 7 well last Sunday at Brea and the well started flowing immediately at the rate of 3500 barrels per day. Hole No. 7 is the largest producing well ever brought in on the East Coyote territory, and doubtless the greatest producer ever drilled by the Union in the Brea district. Two weeks ago the well created considerable excitement by suddenly blowing out, hurling a vast quantity of sald, mud, gas and some oil high over the crown block, covering the rig, engine house and the ground around for a hundred rods or more with a deep layer of the mixture. The action was so violent that a portion of the crown block and derrick girls were cut away, a joint of drill pipe standing in the rig was almost cut off. The disturbance continued for 12 hours and ceased as suddenly as it started. As soon as the refuse and debris were cleared away drilling was resumed. The blow out occurring at a depth of 2300 feet. It was not thought that there was any oil to speak of at that depth as the oil sand in nearby wells was not encountered until a depth of from 2900 to 3000 feet were reached. However further development revealed the fact that it would be advisable to come back up, put in a packer and test the well out at the 2300 foot mark. This was done and the work has netted the Union the biggest well ever brought in in that region. Samuel Tolar was sentenced to seven years in Folsom Thursday for passing a forged check. He made a passionate appeal for probation, promising to be good in the future, but the judge, after questioning him and learning from his own confession that he is a bigamist and has been guilty of other offenses, refused to be lenient. Dr. Janss was in Los Angeles Saturday on professional business.
