WAR HELPED IRON INDUSTRY
Pig iron is the staff of life of the American industrial system. If that system is hale and hearty a plentiful supply of pigon iron is prepared for its daily meal. If that system is billious and anemic the purveyors of pig iron are the first to know about it, and the supply is cut down.
During the first seven months of 1913 business was a prey to the doubt and anxiety which invariably accompany democratic tariff wrecking. Contracts were being postponed, mills were slacking up, railroads were passing the word along the line, "Hold up on rail orders until we see where we are at." Nevertheless, a long period under the protective tariff policy had not spent its force, and during those seven months we produced of anthracite and coke pig iron nearly 19,000,000 tons. During the first seven months of 1914 the country was beginning to feel the evil effects of the democratic tariff policy, the soup cart was trundled out, and every city had its thin bread line. Anthracite and coke pig iron was produced during that period to the amount of about 14,000,000 tons, a falling off of over 26 per cent. Pig iron was one of the last industries to show the effects of the European war. The depression in this industry was carried forward into the first two months of 1915, when the railroads again began to pbfk up, carrying vast cargoes to the seaboard, and delivering huge quantities of raw materials to mills engaged in supplying the belligerents with munitions of war. During the first seven months following the declaration of war, August, 1914, to February, 1915, pig iron production fell to 12,000,000 tons after that our war order prosperity began to be felt in this industry, and during the seven months, August, 1915, to February, 1916, the production of anthracite and coke pig iron reached the unprecedented amount of 21,000,000 tons.
It is prosperity such as this that the democratic administration hugs to its bosom and calls it "Mine!" But the man who stops to consider that during the twenty months of the European war, from August, 1914, to March, 1916, the balance of trade in our favor has been $2,610,000,000, knows full well that this prosperity
POLITICAL GOSSIP FROM WASHINGTON
It is every day more evident to political observers that there is a wide difference between the democratic party and the democratic leaders. The party is made up of individuals in all the states who have high ideals and who are devoted to the welfare of the whole country. The democratic leadership is drawn almost entirely from the south, and its principles are subordinated to local interests and temporary partisan advantage. The party has desired economy, efficiency, observance of the merit system in the government service, and fulfillment of platform pledges. The leadership has been willing to disregard campaign promises, to throw the government service into the old, discarded spoils system, and has been willing to appropriate public funds for any old purposes, just so it helped a democratic district. It is apparent that there are enough independent voters in the membership of the democratic party to rebuke the leaders at the polls in November.
When the democrats were putting through their $50,000,000 appropriation for flood control on the lower reaches of the Mississippi river, Congressman Madden, of Illinois, offered some suggestions that made a very favorable impression upon both republican and democratic members. He asserted that the place to control a flood is not on the lower part of a river but in the upper portions and the tributaries, where the water should be confined for power purposes.

He asserted that the place to control a flood is not on the lower part of a river but in the upper portions and the tributaries, where the water should be confined for power purposes, and let out into the stream gradually, thus serving the triple purpose of furnishing power, preventing floods in spring, and keeping the rivers supplied with water in the dry season. But the appropriation for the lower river went through.
Senator Norris, of Nebraska, a progressive but in the ranks of the republican party, gave an amusing account of the democratic record on the Panama tolls question, a few days ago. He recalled the fact that ever since the question first came up he advocated charging American ships the same tolls as ships of other nations. Democratic editors denounced him as a "railroad senator" and pointed to President Wilson's campaign speech advocating free tolls. When Wilson changed his attitude on the question, the democratic members changed their votes, the democratic editors became advocates of the very policy Norris had been pursuing, but they failed to commend him.
Congressman Albert Johnson, of Washington, created quite a sensation in the house a few days ago by asserting that he had seen an order issued by the secretary of war calling for the discharge from certain crews of all persons not native-born citizens of the United States. This order, said Johnson, had already resulted in the dismissal of five men who are natives of Scandinavian countries but for many years naturalized citizens of the United States. Mr. Johnson asserted that the loyalty of these men cannot be questioned and he deprecated such an older at a time when this country is not at war with any nation and on friendly terms with the nations of which these men were formerly citizens.
Congressman Sloan, of Nebraska, never loses an opportunity to remind the democrats of the merits of his work.

Congressman Sloan, of Nebraska,
never loses an opportunity to remind
the democrats of the manner in which they legislated to the injury of the farmers. Speaking a few days ago on the shipping bill he cited figures to
show that after the enactment of the Underwood tariff law we imported 30,000,000 bushels of corn and 400,-000,000 pounds of beef, most of it from Argentina, where land values are only half those in the United States, and labor costs only half as much. He asserted that freight rates from Argentine to the United States are less than half the rate from Nebraska to the Atlantic seaboard. Government-owned ships, he feared, would further injure American farmers by carrying other Argentine products to our markets at low rates.
FEEDING POULTRY
Little care need be exercised in feeding laying hens at this time of year other than feeding plenty of grain. Nature furnishes an ample supply of bugs and worms, thus giving the protein portion of the ration. The hens are also getting all the necessary succulence in the green feed they find. The kinds of care that the hens received during the winter will show up in their laying the next six weeks. Those hens that were well cared for and well fed will do the best spring laying.
