MERGER TALK IN TELEPHONE CIRCLES
PACIFIC AND HOME COMPANIES NEGOTIATING FOR CONSOLIDATION IS CLAIMED
MANY OF THE CITIES IN SOUTH-ERN CALIFORNIA NOW HAVE BUT ONE COMPANY
With the publication in Los Angeles of an announcement to the effect that an agreement has been reached between officials of the Home Telephone company and the Pacific Telephone company whereby their aggregate assets are to come under one corporation, providing assurance that Los Angeles will have a single telephone system before the year is out, strength is given the belief in well-informed circles that both the local telephone systems will be merged.
According to information obtained from a reliable source, heads of the Pacific Telephone company and the Home Telephone company are carrying on negotiations having for their object the consolidation of the two systems in other cities.
The Los Angeles Home Telephone company is entirely independent of the Home Telephone company that controls the Home system in Southern California cities.
About three weeks ago announcement was made that a movement was afoot at Long Beach whereby the Home company and the Pacific company were negotiating to affect a coning is expected by the companies as a matter of course.
The question of supreme interest involved in the merger, so far as the public is concerned, relates to phone rates. There has been no definite statement forthcoming thus far as to whether rates will be increased, and, if so, how much. Officials of the companies, while admitting that the householder's charge will be increased and declaring that the business man's phone bills will be decreased, do not remove that vitally interesting question from the present domain of cloudy generalities.
SUPERVISORS DENY PROTECTION DISTRICT
The Santiago Creek District Had Too Much Opposition
The petition for the formation of the Santiago Creek protection district was turned down by the board of supervisors Tuesday owing to the opposition to it.
Demands on the county of Orange on the hospital and highway funds were allowed as read.
A petition for the location of the Yorba bridge was presented and filed, and the matter was taken under advisement.
The petition for the incorporation of Brea as a city of the sixth class, was denied, said petition being irregular.
The application of Pacific Tel. & Tel Co., to make excavation on the Anaheim-Olive road was granted.
The application of A. F. Zaiser to construct curb on the westerly line of Yorba street, was granted.

ing on negotiations having for their object the consolidation of the two systems in other cities.
The Los Angeles Home Telephone company is entirely independent of the Home Telephone company that controls the Home system in Southern California cities.
About three weeks ago announcement was made that a movement was afoot at Long Beach whereby the Home company and the Pacific company were negotiating to affect a consolidation. This announcement led to surmises here that it would be but a question of time before the two systems would look toward merging elsewhere.
Events in a number of cities in Southern California during the past few years indicate a steady movement to do away with double telephone systems and that other cities eventually will fall into line and have a single telephone system.
Pomona, Redlands, Pasadena, Whittier an dother cities have done away with the double telephone system and are using single systems. At Riverside and Santa Barbara merger negotiations are under way.
Whether the officials of the two companies controlling the local systems will be able to reach an agreement is, of course, problematical. The fact, however, that negotiations are under way and in view of the mergers that have been effected in other cities in the past few years, it is thought likely that Santa Ana will see steps taken before a great while leading to that city having a single system.
If the Home system is merged into the Pacific system it will mean that about 300 duplicate phones will be taken out and about 350 phones added to the consolidated systems, it is stated.
Following is a report of the Los Angeles movement to consolidate:
Through a nagreement reached recently between officials of the Home Telephone company and the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company, whereby their aggregate assets of approximately $20,000,000 are to come under one corporation, assurance is provided that Los Angeles will have a single telephone system before the year is out.
In making way for this largest public utility merger in the history of the city, both companies vetoed an interchange of service plan as entailing too great expense, and decided that a third
FISH ARE PLENTIFUL IN ORANGE COUNTY
Coming Season to be a Banner One for Trout in our Streams
The fishing season opens May 1, and according to the authorities this will be a banner year for the Orange county streams, for they were never before so well stocked by the commission. There have been many croakings as to the high waters washing the little fish into the ocean and mud killing the big ones. Some hold that all the fish were killed by rolling rocks and debris, and that the streams will have to be restocked before we get any more good fishing.
Did you ever hear of a desert wind blowing all the flies into the ocean? Nature so designed Mr. Fly that he seems to know when a storm is coming, and he proceeds to prepare for emergencies. Same with Sir Trout. These little squalls are all in his every day life, and he knows how to protect himself, for Nature has provided him with speed to swim a waterfall and strength to travel up the swiftest current for days without tiring. A bunch of juicy salmon eggs attached to a string of hooks will do more to exterminate Mr. Trout than any number of rain storms.
Here is my "peachie" reason for a banner trout season. We have had a large flow to the ocean from the San
Home Telephone company and the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company, whereby their aggregate assets of approximately $20,000,000 are to come under one corporation, assurance is provided that Los Angeles will have a single telephone system before the year is out.
In making way for this largest public utility merger in the history of the city, both companies vetoed an interchange of service plan as entailing too great expense, and decided that a third company shall be formed to take over the Home and the Pacific, or Sunset, systems.
The corporation merger will be attended by a physical union of the two companies, and when the work of reconstruction is over there will be only one telephone where, in a great many thousands of places, there now are two.
Which is to prevail, the Sunset or the Home, has not been decided. Also the question of the distribution of offices is still in abeyance.
But none of these details, it is asserted, can stand in the way of the consolidation. The franchise of the Sunset expires November 16 next. As there was to be no regrant of the franchise, except on the basis of interchange, or a single system, it was imperative that the company either merge, buy or sell to stay in the field.
It was announced by the Home company management that there had been no sale to the Sunset. The new company, it is stated, will give the people the advantage of local direction and investment, as well as the consolidated service that can come only through the amalgamation of the properties.
Permission to carry out this plan must first be obtained from the state railroad commission. That the sanction of this authority will be forthcoming.
Here is my "peachle" reason for a banner trout season. We have had a large flow to the ocean from the San Juan, Trabuco and the San Mateo streams during January, February and March. These are the months the steelhead trout runs. With the streams so full there has never been a better opportunity for a big run of steelhead. Some scoff at the idea of steelhead entering our streams, but there is not a doubt that thousands go to the headwaters of these creeks every year. Schools of ten-inch fish have been seen traveling up these streams, and several big fellows are caught each year on the sand bars at the mouth of the creeks. Last year a number of big fellows were caught in the slough at the mouth of the Mateo.
What has been said of the steelhead also fits the rainbow trout. Both are sea-going fish, and both like their annual trip from ocean water to mountain streams. Experts claim that rainbow fry planted in streams where steelhead run go to the sea and return as steelhead.
Fifteen cities in Maine have lately held municipal elections in which party lines were drawn. Eleven of them chose republican mayors—and the vote showed once more that the victorious party has reunited its forces. Every test thus far taken in normal republican territory has resulted similarly. This is a republican year.

FEROGIOUS BATTLE
BETWEEN BULL SEALS
Seal Beach People Witness a Novel Engagement Thursday Afternoon
Several residents of Seal Beach and Alamitos Bay witnessed one of the strangest sights that has ever been recorded in that section of the country late Thursday afternoon, when they were attracted to the edge of the bay bordering Seal Beach and Alamitos Bay by the hoarse barking of some two-score seals.
A big bull seal, the leader of the colony from which that city took its name, was leading a fight against the invasion of a herd of seals that had apparently swum down the channel from the North and intruded upon the comfortable rookery already established for some years by the tribe of fur-bearing animals.
It was a gory bulldight in every sense of the word that took place as the invading strangers attempted to cross the bar just under the Pacific Electric trestle and at the entrance of the quiet bay where the seals make their home. Following the sounding of the alarm of the approach of the newcomers the bulls of both herds immediately engaged in a death struggle that finally ended the lives of both after a spectacular and long drawn out flight.
The followers of each herd stood off a short distance behind their leader and added to the general confusion by their excited yelpings and the beating of their limbs upon the water.
After a fierce combat lasting for two hours, during which the water for yards in every direction from the meeting place of the contestants was thrashed into a crimson foam both

SOME BEANS
The Southern California bean market has been rather dormant during last sixty days, but with the placement of a large order for limas last week and for the big new British orders looks as though values are again due to take the sensational rise that we feature of the market during this latter part of the fall of 1915.

Glenn Martin Now Building Aeroplanes For the United States
"I'd rather build aeroplanes for Uncle Sam and let the European war stuff alone," said Glenn L. Martin, aviator and aeroplane manufacturer, who was in Santa Ana Thursday for a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Y. Martin.
Martin's make of biplane is thoroughly entrenched in the minds of the government experts. He is to start on a five weeks' trip to Washington, D. C., on business in relation to his aeroplane work for the government in a day or two.
"While the American orders are small in comparison to those that are offered from European countries," said Martin, "they are more reliable and more stable, and there is a feeling that a man is doing something for his country when he is building aeroplanes for it.
"The European contracts carry the provision that in case the war ends the order is called off. A factory might be caught with hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of material and equipment on hand."
At present Martin is employing 150 men in his factory.
The machines that Martin is making in his factory in Los Angeles are a far different machine from the ones that he used to fly around Santa Ana.
the opinion that as an inventor he is an excellent submarine explorer.
Wilson visited Seal Beach last week carrying under his arms what he proudly described to the curious Seal Beach resident as "walking pontoons." A large crowd followed him over to the smooth waters of Alamitos Bay, where he demonstrated the great discovery which he had made in the way of non-sinkable pedal coverings.
Wilson engaged a boatman to take him to deep water, scoring the suggestion that he first try his waterproof shoes in shallow water.
Strapping on his水 skates the inventor calmly and confidently stepped over the side of the boat and balanced himself victoriously on the placid surface of the still water bay. He would write to Washington at once for a patent and was just dreaming of how to dispose of his millions when zip—his pontoons sprung a leak or something and the next thing Wilson knew he was flirting with the goldfish in the depths.
The light, inflated footcoverings of the sea stroller kept the remainder of his body submerged until the boatman came to the rescue with an oar. The inventor was finally dragged into the boat and revived with first aid treatments on the shore. Anyone needing a good pair of ocean walking boots may secure same by applying there, since the original owner returned to Los Angeles without them.
WET AND DRY AT NEWPORT
Present indications are that the wet and dry vote for the municipality of Newport Beach at the city election will be very close, and various predictions are made as to each faction's winning the contest.
Both sides are organizing for a warm pre-election fight on the question, and plans are being formulated by the leaders of both sides on a campaign of education.
Strong arguments on the value of preserving the young men and the young women of the community, higher valuation of property under a dry regime, and desirability of a dry town for a residence will be put forward by the dry advocates.
The wets, on their side, are waging their campaign on the platform of the value of the liquor industry to the city in lowering taxes on property and drawing much of the summer trade which this beach enjjoyjjsj.j jTjhey

There are not that many beans in the entire country at present the order must be filled gradually. The no crop of beans will be ready before the order has been completed, but mere announcement of the big order for the canned stew has sent the brekers of the United States into citement.
"The European contracts carry the provision that in case the war ends the order is called off. A factory might be caught with hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of material and equipment on hand."

The machines that Martin is making in his factory in Los Angeles are a far different machine from the ones that he used to fly around Santa Ana. Martin learned in a frail craft driven by a motorcycle engine.
"I wouldn't go up in a machine like that now, not for any money," said Martin. "If I had plenty of time," to go over all the parts, and test every fiber, I might be persuaded by money to take a flight in one of the kind that I used for several months in exhibition work, one of that kind where you sit out in front and put your feet on a stick.
"The machine I am building now is a regular warhorse. It weighs 2300 pounds. The machine that had the seat out in front weighed about 850 pounds, and the torpedo-body machine that I used in my last flight to Santa Ana weighed about 1250. The new machine has a torpedo body, but the whole thing is on a bigger, stronger safer scale."
"Are you doing much flying yourself nowadays?" was asked of Martin.
"Yes, sometimes," he said. "I haven't been up for a week. I did the flying for the tests of two of my machines sold to the government recently. The tests were held at San Diego. However, I am not doing any spectacular stuff, and I am doing less and less flying. I can hire aviators. Sometimes I am accused of getting cautious, though most people do not believe it is possible for an aviator to be cautious."
