A gentleman who has invented a new fly trap put one on exhibition, claiming it to be the best on the market. The contrivance consists of a cage about the size of a coal oil box encased in wire netting, inside of which are two wire cones similar to the ordinary fly traps. Underneath sweetened liquid is placed and after the germ carlers partake of the sweets ascend upward into the trap. Over at Redlands 43 pounds of the peaky things were caught in one week, showing its efficiency. Many cities are buying them, and some of the towns are creating the office of fly catcher; to devote his entire time to that laudable undertaking. The city trustees viewed the new trap with favor, but did not decide to invest in them. The traps cost $1.75, with the usual reduction when any quantity are purchased. Ordinance No. 288, providing for the organization of a fire company of 12 active members besides the driver, was presented. A salary of $5 per month for each member is provided. Ordinance No. 289, relating to the adoption of specifications providing for the establishment of underground conduits, was presented for first reading. Upon its adoption, an ordinance providing for all wires to be placed underground, will be passed. This ported upon labors performed, consisting of sewer and water connections, pole lines put in, arc lights removed in the new lighting area, etc. The street superintendent submitted his report showing how men and teams have been employed, cutting weeds, hauling gravel and dirt and grading streets. He suggested that the steam roller again be engaged to level several of the dirt roads, including West North, South, Santa Ana and East streets. The finance committee reported auditing demands against the city amounting to $3564.36, which were ordered paid. The of securing data cost of running to ascertain if maintenance cost The municipal grand one, provide the service is just cally maintained action is taken to compel the telephone and power companies to put their wires underground. The telephone companies have been asked to remove their unsightly poles from the new lighting area, and one of them bucked the proposition, claiming its franchise gives it the privilege to maintain its poles as now located. By establishing the conduits the corporations will be compelled to obey the new law. One of the trustees said the new mandate may mean a law suit. A new insurance policy for the boilers at the power house was received and ordered filed. Miss E. Kate Rae, secretary of the library board, addressed a communication to the trustees, stating that the terms of Messrs. Sheridan and Dr. Corwin, members of the library board, had expired. A communication was also received recommending the reappointment of these gentlemen, which was readily acceded to. Several building permits were granted, including a $1000 dwelling on East Sycamore street and a $1400 residence on South Claudina street for C. R. Clark. C. H. Newcombe again appeared before the board in reference to a reduction in the cost of energy furnished his pumping plant. Mr. Newcombe maintains the rate is excessive. Two and one-half cents per killowatt, in addition to a graduating scale of $5.30 per month, is now charged. Mr. Newcombe and other users of energy want this latter charge eliminated, claiming the 2½ cent rate sufficient. The trustees agreed to give a flat rate of $150 for six months, while Newcombe asked that the figure be $125. The matter will no doubt be adjusted at the next meeting. In the last two yearsthe country between Fairview and Harper has settled up,and many ofthe residents in that section want mail service by a rural route from Santa Ana.As section may be put on a route. The decision will rest withthe inspector and his superior officers. There are numerous places where changes in routes may be made in orderto accommodate residents inthe country. CREEPY METERS Creeping meters are to be abolished for all time in California. State Superintendent of Weights and Measures Charles G. Johnson is formulating a plan whereby light, power and gas meters in California will be tested and so adjusted that they will register accurately. This brings the various light and power companies within the jurisdiction of the weights and measures act of the state and makes it possible to confiscate the meters and destroy them as is done with other defective weighing and measuring apparatus. Johnson will have available very soon an apparatus known as an improving meter to be used in correcting meters. The new apparatus will make it possible to test ten or more meters at the same time. RURAL ROUTE SYSTEM TO BE OVERHAULED Inspector Will Be In County In July And August and Many Changes May Be Made A postoffice inspector will visit Orange county in July for the purpose of making readjustments and making additions to the rural system of the county. It has been many months since the rural routes have been inspected by one of Uncle Sam's men with authority, and conditions have changed considerably in some sections. The Garden Grove postmaster has long been clamoring for the establishment of a rural service and one of the The Loara P. T. A. held a very enjoyable all day meeting at the home of Mrs. J. O. Reed on Lincoln avenue, Thursday the 10th. The ladies began to gather about 10 o'clock, bringing all sorts of things to eat with them. At noon nearly 50 people sat down to a bountiful luncheon served at long tables set on the lawn under a canopy decorated with honey suckle and geraniums. With the ladies were the trustees and teachers of the school. This being the last opportunity they would have of meeting in a social way with the teachers who have resigned their positions to assume other positions. The day was turned into a reception or farewell to them. At 2:30 the President, Mrs. Reed called the association to order to carry on the regular business of the day and to listen to a very able paper by Miss Esther Hedstrom, our home economics teacher, on the school lunch and of what is should consist. She gave many very helpful suggestions including a few well balanced lunches and all enjoyed her paper immensely. The president then gave her report of the Monthers' Congress convention which she attended in San Francisco in May. The ladies adjourned having spent a very pleasant day together and all hoping it could become an annual affair. FOR EXCHANGE—5 room modern cottage, price $2780.
