The Santa Ana athletic club pulled off a smoker in that city on Wednesday evening. The Santa Ana Blade heaves the following bouquet to Red Mathews of this city: "Red Mathews, our little Anaheim friend, again stepped to the front by defeating Joe Figleman of Los Angeles in one of the best bouts of the evening. It was a bout of real action with few clinches and plenty of give and take stuff. Mathews proved he is entitled to consideration when it comes to boxing any of the boys in his class and gave the fans a great treat in last night's bout. Both boys put up a fight worthy of mention but it was only luck that kept Figleman in the running to the end. During the early rounds he held his own but toward the end his wind gave out and it was here that Red got in his good work."

The play gave little opportunity for a display of artistic skill, but each part, even to the minor ones, was ably sustained. The cast was well selected, and there was not an actor in it who did not sustain his part admirably.
The music, also, was worthy of the applause it received. It was furnished by the high school orchestra under the leadership of Miss Ethel Gibbs. The choir is composed of Clarence Chamberlain and Charles Brisco first violins, Ruth Winters Eldon Stark second violins, Joe Elliott cornet, Alex Huch clarinet and Vivien Tower pianist. The selections rendered were 'When It's Moonlight in Mayo,' "Centurion," "Sweet Mignonette," and "Feld-Cornet."

AFTER SHORT WEIGHTS
Searching for Unfilled Berry Boxes And Sacks of Rolled Barley Under Measure
George McPhee, county sealer of weights and measures, was in town from Santa Ana yesterday, looking for short weight boxes of berries. Mr. McPhee states that local growers, both white and Japanese, filled their boxes to full weight, but that some of the Los Angeles wholesalers are persistent in sending to this county short weight boxes. In a recent shipment of 50 crates of berries to Santa Ana, it was necessary to take 158 boxes to fill up the other boxes to full measure. This Los Angeles wholesaler was arrested and convicted at Santa Ana on Tuesday. The same firm was convicted some months ago for selling short weight butter, and was fined $110. Mr. McPhee has confiscated many thousands of short measure milk bottles in this county, and is prosecuting short weight dealers in rolled barley. He states that the shortage in rolled barley sales in Orange county every day amounts to a ton and a half, which he estimates at a valuation of $1100 a month. He is notifying all grocers that berry boxes must be filed to proper weight, and this is also true of all other commodities sold. A number of Los An-
the board was the only body which could dismiss him, but this, he added, they would undoubtedly refuse to do. McPhee is right on the job every day in the week, and he has the support of every fair minded man and woman in the county.
Mrs. William Kraus of Aurora, Ore., has been a guest for three weeks past of Mr. and Mrs. Max Nebelung. Mrs. Nebelung and Mrs. Kraus visited the San Diego exposition last week, and also the Mission Play at San Gabriel. Today they leave for San Francisco, where they will visit the exposition for a week, when Mrs. Kraus will return to her home in Oregon and Mrs. Nebelung will return here.
Rodger Dutton went up to Los Angeles Monday on business connected with the law.
