Henry Miller of Los Angeles was in town on Monday on a visit to his sister, Mrs. Fred Schmidt. In speaking of his brother-in-law's death some weeks ago in San Bernardino, Mr. Miller was bitter in his denunciation of the apparent mis-carriage of justice, as handed out in that city. Mr. Schmidt was in San Bernardino in consultation with his superior officers of the Santa Fe railway construction department, and having finished his business in the evening, was preparing to take his departure from that city, when, in crossing one of the principal streets there, was struck by a rapidly moving automobile and died several hours later from injuries received. A bystander who witnessed the accident said the autocrat was going at a terrific gate. He had gone fully 100 yards, it is said, before he could stop his machine after striking the unfortunate man. The driver was arrested, and at the coroner's inquest a charge of manslaughter was preferred against him. But since then, Mr. Miller avers, the case has been dropped, and nothing seems to have come FOR SALE—Halt-interest in the best deep-well pump on the market. Schumacher of the Palace Meat market has made extensive improvements in his establishment. He has repapered the place and has arranged the fixtures and counters in a more advantageous position and otherwise placed the shop in better condition to handle his large trade. Mr. Schumacher has one of the nearest and cleanest markets to be found in the county. The plan of planting shade trees along the highways is a commendable one and should receive hearty support. The planting of poppy seed on vacant lots and along the roads, inaugurated by Prof. Ben Milliken of the high school, was a fine idea and met with instant favor by the Board of Trade, that organization providing the seed. All such undertakings should be encouraged and the community will be the galerier. Articles of incorporation of the "Los Alamitos Store" have been returned by the secretary of state, with his O.K. on them. James Sykes of Broadway and East street has recently returned from a trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota, whither he went several months ago to accept the leadership of a brass band which furnishes music for the edification of the old soldiers who are domiciled there. The place is a great health resort and is much sought after by many tourists. Mrs. Sykes remained here and cared for her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Stansbary of Placentia, both of whom are on the shady side of life, the former being 72 and the latter 71. Mr. Sykes likes this climate and country generally, but firmly inclines to the opinion that much unreliable literature is sent out from various sections of California thereby misleading to the people in less favored climes and plays no small part in flooding this country with a class of population that is undesirable, and consequently works a hardship all around. Mr. Sykes thinks our immigration laws are too lax and we would be far better off if a lot of foreigners of a certain class were denied admittance, besides deporting a whole lot already within our gates, and that charity should begin at home. This assertion was made Monday by N.D. Darlington, state highway commissioner, after comparing this state's highway system and road expenditures with those of the other large states. "California now is building more roads than any other state in the Union," said Commissioner Darlington. "California is spending more money daily for good roads than any other state." More men—approximately 5000 are being employed in state highway work in California than in any other state. "And in addition to the work the state itself is doing toward highway building, its counties are outstripping the counties of other states in this same work." "California's roads would cover every section of most any state in the Union right now. And they would cover England very nicely." Notices of California's good road system will be circulated throughout the East that automobile owners will be interested and will not forget to bring their machines with them when they attend the two California expositions. It is expected to have a big effect in bringing thousands into the Southland. Frank Meyers who run down U.S. Lemon with his automobile last week and crushed one of his legs, was arrested by Marshal French Tuesday of last week, on a warrant charging him with driving a machine while intoxicated. Mr. Meyers was taken to Santa Ana and his case was set for Jan. 26, and was released on a $200 ball. Trusses, abdominal belts, Heying's Pharmacy. Taft, made a tour of the huge plant of the Ford Motor company on the occasion of his visit to Detroit, December 3, last. In his address to the Bankers’ Club of Detroit delivered the same evening, Mr. Taft pointed out what might be accomplished in efficiency and economy for the people of the United States if Ford principles could be applied to government business organization in Washington. Mr. Taft, after his inspection with Mr. Henry Ford, said, “The Ford factory is a revelation to me. It’s wonderful—but no more wonderful than Mr. Ford himself. I was amazed at the magnitude of the establishment. I can almost hear the wheels buzz and the machinery hum now. What a splendid organization this is that has been developed in a decade.” FOR SALE—100 acres, alfalfa ranch, good soil, 80 acres all loved and checked, 40 acres seeded, 40 acres about ready to seed; 8200 feet of underground cement pipe, valves to turn water into each check, large reservoir, good well and pumping plant, new barn, small house; six miles south-east of Merced, 2 miles west of Lingard station on S.
